Los Angeles Tea Party Video
by R.J. Thomas
My producing partner, Steve Vernon and I went to Westwood this weekend with a camera and shot the Tea Party rally. It was an amazing day and an amazing job done by the organizers. I have a lot of tape and there’s no way to do the event justice in just under three and a half minutes, but Internet attention spans being what they are, I put the blade to it and (since I do have a degree in journalism) put my spin on it. I was assisted in this by some amazing speakers (I wish I could have fit them all) and a great crowd of super-amazing people who came out to lend a voice to the frustration so many feel.
I have to give special props to the unknown Tea Partier who tried to stop traffic so I wouldn’t get run over when my Cinematic Immunity convinced me to step out into Wilshire Boulevard to get a shot.
I got the shot and remain blissfully whole.

The people in Los Angeles have been shackled by the left longer than most!! I'm proud to see them standing up!!
Wow, even in Westwood … even while UCLA was upsetting Tennessee. Now that's dedication.
Good job!
Any chances you could post some of the speeches whole?
I'd love to see Bill Whittle's and Evan Sayet's speeches in their entirety.
it's too bad they weren't all white. It would have been easier to report on.

it is hard to call you a racist when you don't fit the mold.
Excellent video, I think it really captures the vitality and the righteousness of this evolving movement. Do keep up the good work. BTW Who is the gorgeous black woman in the video? I'm not generally one for worshiping mortal beings, but if I was ever lucky enough to encounter one such as this, I might have to make an exception. WOW!

Friends, I don’t say this to start trouble, but how can you bring down President Obama without addressing the mistakes that the Right has made in the past?
If a protest has a big turnout, the numbers alone do not validate that message. How many protested the Iraq war in 2002? Did the Right show respect for THEIR opinion?
How is the Right proposing to fight poverty? Cut entitlements? What will fix unemployment? Outsourcing?
It’ll be easier to thread Rush Limbaugh (or Michael Moore) through the eye of a needle than it will be to elect a hard right President.
Here's something surprising: I could not attend the LA Teaparty because I was attending a screenwriting class at UCLA (also in Westwood) – a class taught by a seasoned lefty producer, to mostly self-righteous lefty writers in training. But one of my fellow students, a 29-year-old man, "came out" to me and admitted that he, also, was a staunch conservative – and Big Hollywood was one of his favorite blogs! The instructor was not in the room, of course.
You want to fight poverty, unemployment? How about starting with personal responsibility? How about parents teaching their kids riht from wrong and the joy of a job well done? How about not acepting anything you didn't earn? How about hard work and good morals? How about getting the government off our backs and out of our lives so that we can take advantage of the multitude of opportunities in this, the greatest of countries.
Let's try it and see what happens.
a word on the 'Tea Parties' and other phenomenon…
There seems to be a confidence that somehow these events are changing the course of (present) history-
Au contraire, mon freire…
We must insist on the fact that the Current Occupant and his controllers could care less what you- or anyone thinks. Period. End of story.
Not that they are uesless- by all means get out there and be heard- but the net result will be futile. Big government is here folks- and barring some kind of unseen miracle it ain't going away. It's not even a left or right issue anymore. Our friends on the left are going to be just as horrified as we are once the inevitable happens.
Not black helicopter stuff, either. Check out the UN's Agenda 21. Then ask yourself just why do we HAVE to have 'health reform' (government issued and rationed care) this year?
It's kinda dark…
Open your eyes and remove the left/right ideological blinders meant to divide us. Learn the facts. Educate yourselves.
You'll be significantly better off for it.
Going into Iraq was NOT a mistake…unless you think it was alright for there to be rape-rooms and putting people through shredders simply because they made a joke about Saddam. It liberated the Iraqis from a tyrant and showed the rest of the Muslim world that we will NOT just fade away because they hate us. And youre damn straight we showed the protestors respect – we didnt threaten to put them on a Security list (like the one the Obama Administration did to the military and others who have protested him) and they werent arrested or beaten up by union thugs.
and rlafoot has it right: you want to fight poverty/unemployment? LEARN A SKILL, GET OFF YOUR ASS IN YOUR MAMA'S BASEMENT and learn some humility…you are NOT more special than any other person, you have to go through the same hardships WE ALL do…its called LIFE. I would add, treat your family well. They may be the only ones who give a damn when the going gets tough.
If this nation was stupid enough to vote a Hard Left President in, maybe they'll be now mature enough to vote in a Hard Right President who will remind this country that we live in a REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC, not a mob-rule socialist democracy.
I still dont get it…for all the bitching socialists do here…there are PLENTY of places in the world that have exactly what they think this country should have via government…why dont they shut up and go there???
AMEN!!!!
Glenn it sounds to me that "coming out" as a conservative in Hollywood is as bad as "coming out" gay once was you one's career. That's sad.
It does my heart good to see all the true conservatives "come out" in L.A. Stay strong and committed, this is our country not the US Congress's!!!
ddaichiro my friend. Conservatives have one fight. To preserve god given rights and freedom to all people.JFK was a hard right consevative in these days. A president who fought socialism everywhere in the world and reduced taxes on all people and buissness.
Sonja Schmidt from PJTV I think is who you mean.
could someone tell me who the speaker with the graying temples was that was featured in the video in between people who are running for office.
I just read that stuff and you are totally correct. That is some scary shit.
Thanks for being there, RJ. I appreciate you covering the event, and look forward to seeing the other video as well.

Yeah!
The problem is the assumption that the Left and Right wings are equa-distant from the center. They are not. First, America is a Center-Right nation. Then, the far Left is in complete control of the Democrat Party while the fringe Right is nowhere near as fringy (yes, I made up a word) as is the Left. Yes, you may need two wings to fly, but when one wing is way out there and the other isn't then the "muscle" is not to be found near the middle.
You might have a point Lawrence if it not for Reagan. Run conservative and win.
I don't to "bring Obama down" because the problem isn't Obama. The problem has been growing for five decades and it is the sickness of Modern Liberalism that needs to be exposed and defeated at all levels. It needs to be expunged from our society, eliminated from our schools, destroyed in the media and so on. It is the antithesis of all that we believe in and all that made us good, great and successful. It is illiberal, close-minded and fantasy based and that fantasy is a global utopia requiring first and foremost the destruction of Western Civilization.
I believe that's Bill Whittle who has some excellent videos over at PJTV.
That was Bill Whittle.
I admit I laughed out loud when I saw the poster of George Washington – "WTF?"
yes it is…
And we feel it our duty to share with the faithful who follow this site what it is we are uncovering. Stay tuned…
Was that Victoria Jackson at the podium?
When was the last time we reduced our federal budget? In my lifetime?
I propose, as a start, we reduce ALL spending, including nondiscretionary entitlement spending by 10%. Will that hurt? Sure. But better to have 90% of a dollor worth something than 100% of a doller worth pennies when the hyperinflation that is sure to follow this spend fest comes to pass.
And yes, politicians on both sides have been spending too much, Bush doubled the national debt which is bad enough, but Obama just signed a budget that will triple that! This can not last.
I agree and give you thumbs up. It's going to be very hard to undo the damage that the left has done in the fields of the Media and Education. The Media have glorified sex and done their damndest to break up the role of the traditional family. I'm not a tax historian, but one of the reasons that there's a tax cut for being married is that it's good for society for future taxpayers to have a solid family raising. Nothing teaches personal responsibility like raising children and keeping a marriage together. This belief that instant gratification is the be-all and end-all needs to stop. Getting a voice in the media for that would help a lot. I'm thinking Leave It To Beaver or The Cosby Show here. Something wildly entertaining, but with the subliminal message of "Family is Important."
We need to do the same with Education. Equal Time is a good doctrine for the classroom, if not the airwaves. The best teachers are those that leave politics out of it. Get rid of textbooks if you have to. Just teach the material, sans slant.
Furthermore, put limits on unemployment/welfare payments. Six months, tops, of benefits, on a decreasing scale. Say, for example, $1200 for month 1, $1000 for month 2, $900 for month 3, $800-4, $700-5, $500-6. At month 7, no more checks. If you're on welfare, you'd better get a job. It would probably be a good idea to cut a break for people who go to community college or a 4 year university while on welfare. Maintain certain grades (at least a C average) and get a job for at least 10 hours a week, and you can get a stipend or a rebate for tuition.
No more lobbies. Period. If special interest groups want someting, they can do it like the rest of us constituents-fax, email, phone, letters, town-hall meetings. If any politician accepts a "gift" from a constituent, it's grounds for dismissal. Enforce the limit on campaign contributions (something like 2000 bucks per person?) and make it so that individuals are the only entities allowed to make contributions. Businesses can put signs out, but can't donate to the politician. The boss can donate, the employees can donate, but Tony's Pizza and Oil Changes can't donate to anyone's fund.

Want to really "do something"? Become a Republican Party precinct committeeman ("PC"). PCs get to vote for the leadership of the Party and help determine, my majority vote, which candidates get the endorsement of the Party in the Republican primary races. Only takes a few hours of time a month. With half the PC slots in the Party nationwide vacant, and with a fifty-fifty split right now between conservatives and moderate RINOs in the PC ranks, the Party is there for the taking by conservatives/libertarians if we'd all just get off our duffs and get to a meeting of the local GOP and volunteer to become a PC. Want to save your country? Then invigorate the "main enemy" of the Debtocrat/Socialist Party with your presence. Go here and read all three articles. http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com (By the way, half of the Party leadership, the moderates, DON'T WANT YOU TO BECOME A PC, BECAUSE THEY AND THEIR RINO CRONIES WILL GET VOTED OUT OF THE LEADERSHIP — THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT THIS BASIC CIVICS.)
This should be everyone's first priority. Blogging and carrying a sign at a Tea Party or attending a town hall is great, but unless we have better leadership and candidates in the main adversary party, the Debtocrats will get returned to power. It's all about the Constitution and all about winning the elections. The best way to restore the Constitution and to have better candidates who respect the Constitution is to join the Republican Party at the grass roots and make it happen. It's a numbers game. The more conservatives we have in the Party in the precinct committeemen ranks, the more likely it will be that we'll get better elected leadership within the Party and in the general elections. Michael Steele was elected not by registered Republicans but by the precinct committeemen in all fifty states.
Also, you can go to http://www.redstate.com to learn more, too. Just type in the words precinct and committeeman into the search pane and hit the search button and links to a lot of good info will be presented too you.
Thank you.

I am only one. But I am a conservative Republican precinct committeeman and desperately trying to get other Constitution-loving conservatives and libertarians to do the same.
Holy crap! You mean there's still Conservatives in California that aren't from Orange County…!!! Since Big Daddy O won't be running again in 2010, there's a nice chance the GOP can pick up some seats. I'd pay money to see Henry Waxman have to get a real job. Maybe he can become O's new green czar…
That doesn't stop some libs from trying. Check out this debate over the March that occurred on a comic book forum. (I'm responding under the screen name, "Dcguy":

The irony is that this site is pretty dead in terms of postings.
Great job. I was there. Bill Whittle's speech was a barn burner. The people were tremendous. I work in Hollywood and it was only after I arrived and my entire body relaxed that I realized the constant tension from living around leftists. What a joy to be there.
Nope, Sonia Schmidt from PJTV. She's seriously kickass. Check out her videos!

From looking at your comments, it would seem that your intention IS to comment negatively against conservatives. Republicans — except for a treasured few RINO's — were denied a seat at the table in this administration. And while Obama keeps saying that he wants republicans to sign on to his de-capitalization of banks, car manufacturers, and now health care, he continually blames the prior administration for everything he encounters while excoriating Republicans and their conservative base.
It’ll be easier to thread … Michael Moore (or you) through the eye of a needle than push Obama through a filter of truth.
And as for electing a Republican President? After Obama’s 1st term is up (think Jimmy Carter), I don’t believe it would be difficult at all.
Yeah, let's all read Saul Alinsky's ideas about "taking from those who have and giving to those who want it." It is the main clue to where this country is heading.
RJ, Thank you! I contacted Michael Fell to make this event happen. 8 organizers, 8 weeks, 3500 plus people. Every speaker donated their time and energy. Every organizer donated their time and energy. Every attendee, the same. It was an unbelievable day and this video captures the spirit of this movement. Thank you so very much. I am looking forward to our next rally, but this time, it will be bigger, louder, and stronger.

Today, if JFK ran on the same premise as he did for his election, he would have lost. I never thought I would say this but if I had to elect a Democrat for President, it would be someone like JFK — not a snake oil salesman.
Are we up to gazillian trillions yet?
That's Schmidt all right.
By the way, here is her brilliant rundown of Americans' growing anger and dismay over Obama's "hope and change":

Thank the Lord!
As a conservative AND a former USN sailor who learned to love surfing during my time on the West Coast (Stay Classy, San Diego!), I just have one thing to say about this video:
IT'S TOTALLY BITCHEN!
It's amazing what "Constitutionalists" – regardless of party – are doing all across this country!
Can you imagine what would happen if we actually had a LEADER? Ka-BOOM.
More fun with the "two mightys" Al Sonja and Evan: http://www.popmodal.com/search/?search_id=sonja+s...
I don't think any mainstream conservatives are talking about brining down Obama. Ok maybe a few pegs, but no one wants his presidency to end. I'd like to see the choice be offered up A righty and a lefty and an actual choice unlike last time.
I think you are right. A hard core rightwinger isn't the answer. I lean more libertarian. And I think that a little more "Leave me alone-ism" will go a long way.
You need a right and a left wing to fly, but somewhere in the middle is where the muscle is. and that part of America is standing up and saying no more. Let's have some principles not just idealogues.
[...] Meanwhile, here’s some video from L.A. [...]
I don't think the Left has a problem telling non-liberal minorities that they are racist too.
Yes, at 1:01 Victoria is in the upper left-hand box.
Just an aside and this is from a bulletin at my church. The term "eye of the needle" in the bible is misunderstood. The needle refered to a small gate on the side of the city wall to allow foot traffic. The "eye" was evidently the hole in the wall. To get a camel through one would have to push it because it did no want to go through the tight space. Thus while it was difficult to thread a camel through the eye of the needle it was not impossible. This is not relevant to the argument just a note about the bibilical passage.
Nice job keeping the video short. As you said, Internet attention spans are low. If a video hits 5 minutes, I don't forward it because I know people won't watch it. Best thing to do is tease them with some good stuff and provide a link where they can get more.
Also, it would have been cool if you could have subtitled the names of the speakers.
On the day I was moving out of Deerfield Beach there was an anti war protest on Hillsboro boulevard. There was this old aging hippy who was in the middle of the road stopping cars to had out some flyer. It was a little disconcerting because he'd come up to people's cars from behind so you had to watch out to make sure you did not hit him. He comes up to me and I shook my head no and then refused to look at him. Just as the light is turning green and I start to move he punches my passager side window and puts the paper against it as if to force me to read it, shaking his fist at me. It startled me since one second later and I'd of been traveling fast enough that this would have hurt him. I breaked and scowled at him and he runs off. Later I got on my cell to call the cops to tell them that someone needed to tell this guy not to walk in a crowded street during rush hour traffic and that he doesn't have the right to hit peoples cars to force them to pay attention to him.
Is this the guy I am supposed to have respect for? I think I'll pass, thank you very much.
Someone asked "BTW Who is the gorgeous black woman in the video?"
I think that is Sonja Schmidt, and if it is, you can find her at http://www.pjtv.com/
Great job, Megan! Wonder if the lovely L.A. libs shouted anyone down during the rally. I'm in Carlsbad now, but every time I drove up to L.A. last year, my McCain sticker got covered over by the HopeyChange sticker!
i was there on Saturday and it was awesome! i heard there were around 4,000 people who attended, which is amazing for LA. The one guy near the beginning of the video said what I'm sure most of us had thought – we're alone out here. Not true! and our numbers are growing.
that was my favorite sign at the rally. brilliant.

I'm a conservative in L.A. as well, but until the Republican Party gets its act together, they do not deserve to pick up one Seat or one House seat. Illegal Immigration and consistent voting laws across the country are non-negotiables for me. Since when do you go to cash a check at a bank that you don't have an account with and they don't ask for an I.D.? If we want to say sayonara to compulsive egomaniacal career politicians such as John McCain, who felt he was owed the Presidential nomination, we have to get behind with overwhelming force at the polls, behind candidates who won't play patty cake across the aisle. We have to get past throwing our hands up and saying "this as good as it gets." The marches and the tea parties are nice touchy feely things but if those same people don't get out there and do the heavy lifting now, not in October of 2010 and 2012, then this will go down in history as a wasted exercise in manufactured patriotism.
Writestuffla,
You make a lot of good points. Are you "in" the Republican Party? That is, are you a precinct committeeman?
Here's a great video that explains The Neighborhood Precinct Committeeman Strategy for taking back our country at the grass roots level, the precinct level. The "heavy lifting" you mentioned, although the lifting really isn't all that heavy, just a couple of hours a month to attend a meeting:
http://www.kickthemallout.com/article.php/Video-T...
If you're not a precinct committeeman, I hope you'll join the Party as a precinct committeeman and reform it from within. You can read all about The Neighborhood Precinct Committeeman Strategy here:
http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com . (And, yes, I am a precinct committeeman).
Read all three articles.
The "powers that be" in the Republican Party like the status quo. They fear conservatives coming into the Republican Party in droves to drive out their buds in the leadership and to help better, more conservative candidates win the primary elections. Fifty per cent of the PC slots in the Party are vacant, so a conservative revolution within the Party is doable. We just have to do it. Even the "conservative" elected Republicans fear new conservative blood in the Party — they might get beat in a primary by a "better" conservative challenger.
Let's have a revolution!
Thank you.
