Actually, that was Henry Wu, the chief geneticist for Jurassic Park, that wanted the slower dinosaurs. Hammond wanted the dinosaurs "realistic", meaning: fast, aggressive, and violent.

Well, with JURASSIC PARK genetic engineering and cloning is expensive, so I'm guessing Crichton needed an organization with enough money to finance the project.

And a massive Business called InGen worked.

"Man is too ignorant and too immoral to control the destructive forces that high-tech science unleashes on the world when he tampers with nature. Therefore, man should refrain from using high-tech science to tamper with nature."

Tell that to our Doofus-in-Chief. Obama wants to start seeding the atmosphere with junk to stop global warming.

It's not so much the idea of using the Big Businessman as a villain as it is the lack of Big Businessman as good guys that you see. There is very little balance. Reality and common sense would dictate to people that if all Big Businessmen were the evil, greedy villains out to screw the little guy that we so often see in our TV and movies then we would be a lot worse off than we are because in media-land, every Big Businessman seems to be out to get you, and in reality, we owe nearly everything we have to Big Businessmen.

It seems to me the problem is that we've been so trained to think of Big Businessmen as evil and greedy that when the AIG bonus situation came up, we saw people instantly point their fingers like well-trained dogs at people who were receiving legally, contractually-obligated bonuses that they were set up to get by our government. No one pointed fingers at the government who deserved at least as much blame. That's where I have a problem with the constant cliche of the evil Big Businessman without balance.

Admittedly, it's been a while since I've read the book, but was it ever explicitly stated that Malcolm died in the book. I think if I remember correctly, when they asked about Malcolm, the answer was just a negative shake of the head. At first thought, that could mean that he had died, but it could also indicate ignorance as to Malcolm's state of health too. I remember my husband and I have that conversation about whether Malcolm was killed in the book or not after having seen JPII in the theatre because my husband hadn't seen the first movie and thought Malcolm was dead. We looked it up and decided it was ambivalent.

Hmmm...I just happen to know of a screenplay where the eco-nuts are the villains. It's located at

<a href="http://site.globalvillageidiot.org/" target="_blank">http://site.globalvillageidiot.org/</a>

I have to admit I'm biased in favor of the writer because I know him...but I enjoy his work!
