One Shot. One Kill. One Beautiful Sharpshooter

This is not Yael, our beautiful Israeli sharpshooter. Security forbids us from posting her real name or image. But you get the idea, right?
“How long did it take you to qualify as a sharpshooter in the IDF?”
“Not too long. I had a natural aptitude with the rifle. I started out at 15 meters, then moved up to 30, 50, 100, 400 then all the way up to,” she hesitates, “classified meters.”
Israeli soldiers are famously and appropriately tight-lipped regarding training and operational details.
Yael—not her real name—is an unbelievably beautiful young Israeli woman. Her moca skin—flawless, like dark glass—testifies to a Bukharin father and Yemenite mother, a genetic mix I strongly recommend. She looks like the American supermodel Tyra Banks, only slimmer, more beautiful — and far more lethal.
Yael sits ram-rod straight. Her neck is swan-like, and her fingernails—lacquered red as a Chinese vase—are sharp as switchblades. Melting over her head is raven hair with a sprinkling of bronze highlights that give her the look of a post-punk goddess.
It’s Friday night, Shabbos in Israel, my wife Karen and I are visiting our childhood friend Deborah. We all went to the Yeshiva of Flatbush together. Deborah married an Israeli and has been living in Israel ever since. Yael is Deborah’s daughter-in-law.
“Are you also proficient with a pistol?” I ask
“Sure, I qualify with the polymer Jericho.”
“I understand you’re also a black belt in Karate.”
“Yes.”
I look at Yael’s husband, an unassuming and bookish young man.
“What happens when you guys have an argument?”
“She wins,” he deadpans.
“When you shoot do you have such long fingernails?”
She glances fondly at her dagger-like tips, shakes her head side to side.
“No, of course not. When I shoot, these are off.”
She folds her hands in her lap. Yael’s fingers are long and tapered, perfect little animals for trigger-pulling. I notice that she has the ability to stay still as a pilaster. Her stillness is taut, like a coiled steel spring, stillness that reminds me of a cobra.
Welcome to Israel, where men and men and women are, um, beautifully lethal.
“The Mossad tried to recruit me to go to foreign countries to train special units in counterterrorist tactics,” Yael says.
“What countries?”
“Tsk, tsk, I cannot say.”
“Fair enough.”
“We know how to operate in urban environments, three-dimensional warfare. We have lots of experience,” she adds.
Hmm, I have heard rumors that the U.S. has quietly brought over Israeli soldiers, consultants to help train our troops for the rigors and complexities of warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan, warfare against the Islamist enemy.
“They were paying so much money,” she sighs.
“What happened?”
“I decided to stay home. Take care of my man.”
“Lucky guy.”
“Yes, he is.”
Yael’s husband cheerfully nods.
“Tell me something, what was your motivation?”
“Moti-what?”
“Your reasons for becoming a sharpshooter?”
She shrugs, ponders a moment: “It was a challenge. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. That I’ve got the talent.”
Talent.
“That’s it?”
“What, there has to be more?”
I’m just a dopey screenwriter. I expect grand speeches about patriotism, fighting the Arab Muslim terrorists, protecting the Jewish state.
But Yael is a tough Israeli woman. She lives in a dangerous neighborhood and that’s something she takes for granted. Thus, her motivation boils down to a somewhat casual, but down to earth approach to her craft.
“What about the future,” I probe.
“Children. I want to be a mother.”
Yael glances at her husband. He offers a crisp salute.
Like a little girl, the sharpshooter giggles.
Deborah’s husband, Yael’s father-in-law, fought with General Ariel Sharon’s brigade in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the unit that crossed the Suez and enveloped the Egyptian Third Army, Operation Gazelle. He promises to sit down with me and record his memories of that legendary maneuver.
Karen and I walk back to our hotel.
We pass the Cafe Hillel.
A tiny gasp bobs from Karen’s throat.
We remember Dr. David Applebaum, his daughter, Nava and seven innocents who were butchered by an Arab Muslim homicide bomber.
Further down the block we pass another cafe that has twice been targeted by homicide bombers, but each time brave security guards blocked the terrorist’s path.
How long will it be before these homicide bombers explode themselves in cafes in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. I have no doubt it will happen, for Israel is the testing ground for all murderous jihadist tactics. And when the world excuses their Jew killing, when the world willingly accepts their lies and their grievances as legitimate, well, the terrorists are emboldened, and they realize that any dumb, half-baked grievance will do, because grievances are a dime a dozen — thus the Islamist fascists are given the green light to kill anyone, anywhere.

Imagine that. A soul mate with whom one could "talk guns". THAT would be sweet. I want one. LOL
I'm glad I bought my wife a .357 for Christmas a few years back.
These articles are wonderful. I love the resolve of the Israelis. Danger never far, but they refuse to allow it to consume them. Duty accepted. Life goes on, and it is lived. What we would consider heroism seems routine. Do we have that here? Did we ever?

Indeed. Among Israelis, patriotism and protection of theirs is commonplace and need not be said. There once was a time when the same could be said for the USA. It's still here; only the loud among us have forgotten it.

Well, Lyudmila Mikhailivna Pavlichenko still lives in sprit. Its a tough job that this lady dose, To fight in this matter takes a special kind of mind set, The Shooting part is the easy part, the hard part is staying still and in one spot for days and they other thing, You see what bullets do, be it 5.56mm 7.62 mm and well the big 50 BMG. There Russians refered to there better Snipers as Noble Sniper. I would guess, that she would make a very good White Tail Deer hunter. Then again she hunts more dangerous game that I ever would. Israel has these individuals in spades, When you consider that Israel is a very small Nation, with very large enemies, They tend to be better as such things. Besides shooting rifles is a fun way to pass an afternoon. Even better when some one pays you to do it.

And not just the Amazonians, as these Israeli lovelies show. In martial arts there are some pretty amazing little lovelies who are insanely lethal.

If you want to read about a legendary sniper, read the book about Carlos Hathcock. Some of the book was used in the Tom Berringer movie, Sniper (itself a rather forgettable movie). The scene where he kills the enemy through the enemy's scope was in fact based on Hathcock and a North Vietnamese sniper.
I do get a bit peeved when I read in the paper of some psycho killing people with a rifle referred to as a "sniper". A truly good military trained sniper can hit distances 1000 yards – and beyond.

BTW speaking of Warrior women my cousin is from WV. Her son graduated from West Point and while there got some shooting instruction from the New Jersey SWAT team. While there the leader complimented him on his shooting ability and when asked where he learned, got the answer "My momma taught me".
actually 'Sniper' was pretty good- and Berenger nailed his character. Any Marine will tell you that.
But Gunny Hathcock was a one of a kind, and his death was a tragedy particualrly when the Corp didn't stand up for him when he was deathly ill.

Israel is not an “enterprise.” That is code for a business arrangement, a vile libel hurled by Jew-haters.

I've had the pleasure of personal acquaintance with a female member of the IDF, a lovely young woman named Fatima. She, too, made no great fuss about risking her life for her country. She earned my eternal respect and affection for the actions she took on behalf of her beleaguered nation. I won't mention her last name, since one never knows how such information might be used by JEW HATING SCUM.
Abe, if there are individual Jews you don't particularly admire, I don't have a problem with that. When one uses the term "Zionist," however, that indicates an all-inclusive kind of disdain.

Powerful article and very realistic last paragraph. It will take awhile when it happens for Americans to stand strong like the Israelis, but we will stand strong as Americans with the help of Israel.
Well the President is who he is, Israel know this. Its not going to matter a whole lot because when the rubber meets the road, Nations do what is in their best interest. Just about everybody is telling him to go pack fudge.

I taught my wife Karen and my two daughters how to shoot.
obozo has managed to do something positive for me – he convinced my wife to carry a gun – and she is about as antigun that a gun lover could marry without divorcing thru the years

I get that with my wife, but we talk blades.
My wife can naturally out shoot me with a handgun. She has had no training other than range safety (always point weapon downrange, don't put finger on trigger until ready to fire), she is a natural. Long gun is a whole other ball game.
I agree about the Hathcock books – and if you like fiction I strongly recommend the Stephen Hunter books (especially Time to Hunt) featuring Bob Lee Swagger, who is based firmly on Hathcock.
Fascinating stuff. Hunter definitely knows his guns as well as he knows his characters.

Talk to real soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen and you'll find the same thing. The fastest way for me to tell another soldier is try to get them to talk about their combat experience. With real soldiers its like pulling teeth. We just don't talk about it.
Ask us why we volunteered you'll get a short answer. We don't wear our patriotism on our sleeves, but it is there and it runs deep.

A person where I work (he recently retired) has a Marine son who's a sniper had at least 2 tours into Indian country with multiple training for just about any climate and jump heights. OORAH!!

I used to hang out with a couple ex-IDF ladies when I was in college. I always remembered while we drank sangria and checked out guys, that they could kill half the people in the room .

Carlos was great, but Simo Hayha of Finland killed over 500 Russians during 4 months of the Winter War, all well-documented, using a standard M28 Mosin Nagant with iron sights. His count was probably even higher, because they didn't start documenting until two weeks after he began. They called him the White Death.

My only complaint is, if you didn't use her real name so as to protect her identity, why did you provide so much family-connection-like info? Armed with that, and her physical description, anyone with half a brain and some motivation can now identify her!
Been there, Done that. You either have the 'natural ability' or you do not. It is very hard to train someone that does not have a natural ability to be comfortable and accurate with a rifle. Oh and 'classified' meters? 1000 meters is not unusual. At least it was not for me.
IDF will accept Irish Catholics, yes. I know an Catholic from Canada who served, met an israeli soldier girl, converted to Judaism and married the girl. He ended up staying in the IDF as a career officer. He's a Brigadier General now, Northern Command, which means the front line on the Golan Heights, a very hot spot.
Not suggesting conversion for you or any Catholics.
