I just learned that Esther Ralston lived in my house in upstate NY with her daughter Mary Baxter while she worked in Glens Falls. Thank you for posting this, it filled in some of the gaps I had in my quest to learn more!

I am sure that this will not sit well, but I must be true to what I know...

First, a great many actors and actresses suffer from personality-disorders. They're such natural chameleons that acting just comes naturally to them. Under the surface is a person with no real sense of who they are - so it's easy to become whoever they need to be at that moment.

For women, it's often "Borderline Personality Disorder." These women are absolute masters at making themselves the victim, and hiding their volatile nature from people outside the family. Intimacy triggers their issues, so it's the "spouse" who usually gets the brunt of the abuse. People who don't live in the home would never believe how utterly evil they can be.

Once can happen to anybody.
Twice is really crappy luck.
Three times?

Sorry, Lady -- the common denominator here is YOU.

She was a beautiful woman, and a great actress. I'd bet my life savings she also was a "borderline."

How do I know all this? I've got the scars of 66 stitches from a woman you'd swear was Mary Poppins and Donna Reed all rolled into one. I fell for her "victim" routine, and bought her tales of abuse hook-line-and-sinker. It never really occurred to me that she was lying (or delusional) until I sat in a courtroom and watched her tell the same stories - verbatim - about me that she once told ME about HIM.

Thankfully, I was finally able to convince The Court to order a psych eval, and the good Doctor saw through her charades. Our Daughters have thrived in my care and become healthy, impressive, intelligent women. The sickness did not get passed to yet another generation.

Google "BPD Central" and read up a bit -- odds are good that at least 10% of you reading this are married to one.

God bless you all...

There is a serious difference between putting your career first and working together to build a life.

Working together to build a life often means trading off domestic chores and child-care, working alternate shifts, enabling your partner to work late or take a job that requires travel and knowing that he, or she, will be there so that you can work late or odd hours or take a job that requires travel.

Lord knows I'd *prefer* my husband to be home but in our 22 years of marriage we have been separated by military duty for weeks or months at a time (not years, thank you!) and also by his civilian work, one week gone, one week home... for nearly two years. And yes, it's horrible. Sometimes work does that for you and when that happens having a *spouse* to hold down the home-front is the difference between hard and utterly impossible.

It's not the long hours that break up marriages. It's the idea that it's all about you... and that goes for men, too.

Perhaps Naan's husband should go talk to the studio president, say thank you for caring about the families of your employees, and then tell him what the deal is.

Thank you Mr. Avrech. I read all three of your articles on this Lady. It made me want to know more. I looked her up and found out that she died in Ventura, CA. I wish I would have known about her. I'm from Ventura and would have loved to have talked to her. Tragic but wholesome all at the same time. What a wonderful story.

Thank you for illuminating a backstory of Hollywood that shows the struggle and very typical outcome of what "stars" go through in their lives. I hope that people notice that it isn't really all that different from some of the soap operas being played out privately in cities and towns all across this country. Maybe us Hollywood types will then be seen as normal people too. (Yeah, I doubt that.)

Write on with your script.

It is not just in Hollywood that people have to choose between career and a balanced life. The political world, the high end business world, being a doctor or lawyer... even if you just want to run the best dam corner deli in the state... You need to decide how much of your attention is devoted to which of the desires of your life.

dcase says above: <i>... It should be a personal decision as to pursue a career or not. Likewise, if one chooses to stay at home and devote their time to the family. What is incorrect behavior, however, is to inflict one's own wishes and dreams on another.</i>

Yes, kudos to George for making his choices, but also to every couple in Hwood that have stood the test of years. And to every individual who aspires to something greater than where they are at the moment.

People have to realize; <u>sometimes</u>, the efforts one needs to achieve don't allow for what "normal" people think of as a balanced life. Just ask my family.

Thanks so much for all your comments.

Esther Ralston's career did, indeed, span Hollywood's most interesting and important eras. She knew and worked with a who's who of Hollywood's best producers, writers, actors, and directors. She is emblematic of the hundreds of vaudevillians who found a home on motion pictures. She's also a classic example of the carefree early days in Hollywood when so many stars—innocent and unsophisticated—let careers and fortunes slip through their fingers. Esther never succumbed to drugs, booze or promiscuity. But bad choices in men was certainly her weakness. She deserves a full length biography.

Sorry it took so long to deliver Part III, but I'm on deadline with a script and there don't seem to be enough hours in the day to complete my various labors.

I dont know whether to feel sad for her, happy that she got peace in the end, or what. I guess in some ways it is comforting to me to see stories of women who have screwed up their lives with men worse than me, though.

Well, It's not that we want to kill them. We just want them to stop talking. It seems like the only solution. :)
