American Journalism Goes Dark—Voluntarily
Journalism died in America when Barack Hussein Obama was running for President.
The dinosaur media gleefully surrendered to the cult of personality—standard for leftist politics—and since then normally skeptical journalists have turned into nothing less than a collective Pravda for the Obama White House.
It’s not hard to fathom the reasons for this herd-like behavior. Elite journalists and editors recognize in Obama a kindred spirit, a hard left, big government ideologue who is adept at mouthing—endlessly, tediously and vacuously—all the politically correct rhetoric.
Questions of experience, competence, and Obama’s deeply troubling political, religious and social connections were swept aside as “mere distractions.”
In fact, Obama’s numerous unsavory friends and supporters was and is at the heart of the Obama presidency.
As the American public is now discovering.
Well, only if you watch Fox News or read the Internet.
Dunn Does Mao
White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, speaking at the pricey and exclusive St. Andrews Episcopal high school graduation, praised Mao Tse-Tung and Mother Theresa as two of her “favorite political philosophers.”
Was she joking, as she now claims?
Of course not.

As you can see, there is not a hint of irony in her delivery—there is a strong hint of psychotropic medication as Dunn reflexively licks her lips during the speech; she’s got a case of dry mouth that can only be induced by drugs—and the titters when she mentions Mother Theresa and mass murderer Mao Tse-Tung in the same breath is the sound of nervous laughter from audience members who are, no doubt thinking: “Did she really say what I thought she said?”
You would think that the White House communications director’s praise of Mao—responsible for the death of about 50 million people—would be big news.
You would be wrong.
Only Glenn Beck and Fox News are carrying this story.
It’s a bit like, well, Mao’s China or the Soviet Union, where the media is a wholly owned subsidiary of the government.

My Cute Communist Spy
Years ago, researching a film script, the studio sent me the screenwriter, plus director, producer, and co-producer to China.
The Communist government assigned us several translators—meaning spies—to keep an eye on us.
My Spy, a genial, delicate and extremely cute young woman who was crazy about Hollywood movies, and totally knocked out to discover that she was in the company of a real live Jew—“Can you not just bless the pork and make it the kosher you require?”—was kind enough to warn me that my hotel room was bugged, and that her job was to make sure that I only saw the ”best side of The People’s Republic of China.”
My spy, I soon discovered, though she was working for the Communist Party, was deeply unhappy about her life and her role as a government drone.
One afternoon, as she and I strolled along The Great Wall of China—which really is great—away from the other government minders, she told me that her father, a university professor, was denounced as a counter-revolutionary during the so-called Great Leap Forward.
“What happened?” I asked.
“He was shamed and hung himself from the tree in our courtyard.”
And your mother?”
“She was sent for re-education, but I never heard from her again.”
“So you think she died?”
“Murdered. Mao killed millions.”
This was years ago and the extent of Mao’s machinery of death was not yet known in the West.
“And now you’re a member of the Communist Party.”
My Spy shrugged and smiled sadly.
“I survive.”
Praise of Mao Tse-Tung by western elite liberals might be viewed as trendy intellectual slumming—like Che t-shirts—by members of the dinosaur media, not worthy of notice or comment, but for me, Mao Tse-Tung conjures the image of a father dangling by the neck, a mother swallowed by Mao’s vast gulag, and My Spy smiling through her tears.

They are pseudo intellectuals who believe so much in the strength of their ideas that they see unlimited power as the best means to achieve their ends because they KNOW BETTER. And most of them believe that they are morally upright and strong enough to avoid the "excesses" of their predecessors. The others are simply amoral [or psychopathic] misfits who figure the ends justify the means.
But in any case, I'll stand with David Brin who wrote, "It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power. "
I love the touch about the dry-mouth. Liberals love to get high, 60's free love and all. She got high and said some dumb things. Whether it was prescription anti-depressants or just plain old Mary Jane, I'd like to know.

A very moving essay.
It's truly a shame that those who believe in the supremacy of the state over the individual have absolutely no idea what that really means.
And if it does actually happen in America, they will be the first ones dealt with, and their idiocy will no longer be useful.
Had a Chinese economics professor for one class way back in my college days. I'm guessing he was in his late 50's and this was during the early 1990's. The class was international economic theories. So we looked at a variety of topics, industrialization, free markets, capitalism, socialism, mercantilism, et al. To his credit, he taught the class without bias. He presented the facts and for most part stayed apolitical, until we got to Chinese communism and Mao. The prof spoke with a heavy accent and it was difficult to understand him at times. He was generally reserved. But when we started in on Mao, his demeanor changed a bit, not a huge difference but noticeable, you could tell the resentment and he spoke up a bit louder and was more understandable. It was the only time during the semester that I got a sense of his political and economic leanings. I forget exactly what he said, but he was clear about how wrong communism is and hatred of Mao.
It burns my ass, too, to see people think it is intellectually savvy to praise the and idolize Mao, Che, Stalin. Communism is nothing sort of state-run slavery.

It is with that admonition that gives Mr Avrech's article added gravitas. Communism- atheism- deaden's one's soul and retards spiritual development (see Dali Lahama for details). When the state is god, we all become slaves to the whims of that entity.

I wanted to add also that I have a friend from Laos and one day we were having lunch, I don't remember how the conversation started but she told me that she and her family "escaped" from Laos when she was 13, it was their second attempt. I said "escaped"? What do you mean by escaped"? She said that NO ONE is allowed to leave and if you're caught trying to "escape" you will either be killed or sent to an interment camp. The first time she and her family were caught and spent almost 2 years in a camp. When you leave and are caught you lose EVERYTHING you ever owned and have to start all over again. NOT that you have much she said because all they owned were some clothes, a few pots and pans a hut with a door floor and some cots. ONE room. She said that the poorest people in America are still richer then the richest people in Laos. Needless to say I was crying by the time she told me all of that. I felt so bad for her. So to those who believe that America is a bad place then I say don't let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.

Has a communist ever explained why, since it's supposed to be such a wonderful system, why people are murdered trying to flee communism rather than flocking toward it?
Perhaps someone should point out to these wannabe "elites" that top of the list for a communist takeover is eliminating anyone smart and/or powerful enough to be competition for the leadership.
Of course, as we all know, communism has simply never been implemented properly. It has been done by revolution, when too many remain who remember how things used to be, and understand how that was better.
Nah, the proper implementation of communism must be done slowly, over generations. People need to be educated from birth on the values of working together for the common good, the subjugation of the individual for the benefit of the group, of playing well with others. They need to be shown the benefits derived from serving the community, even if they must be somehow required to before they are allowed to advance in life, to so they understand. Then it can be a national effort, a true nationwide Call To Service. Why, once everyone understands how wonderful it is to freely and selflessly serve the community at the behest of the government, then they can accept the gracious offer of the government to do so for their entire lives…

I was going to say something about it earlier (because it seemed so incongruous to me that this administration that puts such a high value on attractiveness would want her as a public rep) but I also didn't want to draw attention to her since the longer she's out there, the more damage she does.

The refusal of the MSM to look objectively at the pattern of disinformation from the administration amazes me. Nine months in, and not once have they engaged in a substantive debate on the merits of their positions. The only response has been to vilify those who question. Once or twice, I could see them overlooking, but it happens constantly. Are they that blind? Or are they complicit?
The Dunn thing is yet another example. Having heard the whole clip the first time Beck played it, she actually had a decent message to give to those kids; essentially to think independently, don't allow others to define your limits. (The irony of that I will leave you to ponder.) Her expression of admiration for Mao was entirely secondary to the message. Her tone, and the context certainly belie her claim of humor. No, it was there to legitimize her hero in the eyes of her audience.
If MSM does not care that the administration is filled with avowed communists, at least they should have the self-respect, and intellectual honesty to admit that. Unfortunately intellectual honesty is something sorely lacking in all quarters today.

My mother had a similar opinion of 60s radicals burning American flags and praising socialism and communism. My family is from Poland (both sides) and most of my mother's family still lives in Poland and lived there under Communism. My mother saw how the gov't run stores were kept, how my grandmother tried to buy meat for her sisters and their children and it was meat, she said, she wouldn't have fed to a dog. The canned meat was no better. My mother remembered going into a shoe store and watching people nearly kill each other to get a pair of the limited supply of shoes. My mother also remembered going into one of the few privately run stores and how the goods were well-made and the service was excellent.
Then she would return to the U.K. (where her parents had gone after the War as refugees) and watch that crap on the news and she just couldn't understand it – how could American be so blind to it.
It is an insult to the millions of people that have died under communism and who still today in those countries fight for freedom. It's disgusting. God Bless that girl in China. My great aunt in Poland also was a Party member, but that was because she needed to be to find decent work and make a living and feed her family. But they were also very Catholic and when her daughter was getting married, she told the local Communist Party leader that her daughter was getting married in the Catholic Church and it was tough $hit on him if he didn't like it. He did nothing against her because of it. I suppose she was just lucky.

Hard to believe parents sacrifice to send Kids (Bloom & Dunn) to college and they come out radicalized commies. Theare are literally millions of people like them in the country that believe their college professors. There has to be a pychological profile for these people (1) High School Drama Club laughing stock – unathletic or not pretty (2) failure to compete in college in a meaningful major, (3) decide system is unfair and go to Art School (4) Start quoting Mao as part of adolescent rebellion (5) make a career out of it

Why didn't Dunn use Hitler to deliver the same message? After all, Der Fuhrer did not allow other to define his limits and he definitely thought, um, out of the box.
The Left in this country needs to tell itself and new recruits stories that back its plans. Castro and Mao are the ones they use to invoke violent overthrow.
Back in the late 60s, while smoking a joint, alone with our guru, I remember him telling me a story that he attributed to Lumumba, the leader of the anti-White revolution in the Congo. Supposedly, the general had his black men lined up and said (aprox), "Those of you who are willing to kill for our cause, step forward." A number of men did. Then he told them to turn around and said, "Those are the men you are going to have to kill."
The point is that revolutions are bloody. There is no way around it. So when Mao is invoked by Liberals, they have to try to mitigate that fact in the minds of their recruits so they are not scared off. Associating Mother Teresa with Mao makes him sound to teens and young college folks like a truly noble historical figure.
I could only guess. Hitler obviously lacks the romantic appeal to the left which Mao possesses. Perhaps she is not as much a student of Hitler as she is of Mao. Or perhaps she is, but understands that mention of Hitler is politically unacceptable. Or maybe she couldn't find a story about him which could be shortened and told in this setting.
But please don't misunderstand my support of the message she attempted to convey. I was attempting to counter her response that she was joking. Obviously, there are many historical figures she could choose to be favorite political philosophers. And I think part of her choosing those two for the purpose of that speech was the vast difference in public perception of Mother Teresa and Chairman Mao. And I believe she was also trying to elevate Mao to a position of moral equivalence. Which makes her remarks all the more troubling.
I could just spend my day cursing…like I stubbed my toe…about the fact you point out KCOP. Liberals think they know better than everyone and want unlimited power to force you to do what they want. It's so rotten, so stupid, so against the principles of this country and so obvious that if they get their way they will be the first to get destroyed because those who are opinionated are the biggest threat to the system they want in place. It's like the people in wealthy districts who voted for Obama and are now regretting it as he vilifies them first.

I tokk engineering in college, so there really wasn't any politics in any classes. Kind of hard to wax poetically on Marx when you'r up to your neck in calculus, physics, etc.

Curious, how is the Left, by denying the atrocities committed by Mao and praising him instead, really any different than Holocaust deniers? Is one okay because the genocide was committed against people with different politics but the other not because the genocide was committed against a particular ethnicity/religion? This reminds me of the Left's take on hate crimes: it is a more heinous crime to kill someone because they are black or gay than it is to kill them because they are a Republican?! Killing is killing. All killing is equally wrong save when done in self-defense. Mao's Cultural Revolution killed more people than the Holocaust and both should be condemned by any sane and moral person.
In nature, the closest you can find to "True Communism" is hive societies as with ants and bees, where the vast majority are drones fated to work hard and die in service to the elite privileged few. Every time before where communism has been implemented for humans, this is the natural form it assumes. Thus it was not surprising to see the envisioning of a collective to assume a hive shape which resembles communism.
Also note that to make it work you have to remove those pesky concepts of privacy and independent thought, at least for the "ordinary people." Locutus had to be specially designed with more independence for his (its?) task, something common enough for the "elite" who have to do the "real work" to keep collectives operating.

Re-read the post, it's a narrative of how the essential beliefs of "good" communism have been insinuated into our society, largely by co-opting what was formerly "acts of charity," for several decades. You may also notice the reference, as part of the continuing indoctrination of public school students by unionized liberal teachers, to the required "voluntary community service" for graduation, indicating how far along the takeover has progressed. Which is too damn far along, just so you know.
So when is Hollywood going to address Communist "re-education" and slave labor camps–that still, by the way, exist? Oh I forgot, they are probably too busy making yet another Gitmo sucks and by the way so did Bush film.

Convention in MN; Sarah Palin's church was firebombed just 5 weeks after the election; and the Gov. Mansion in Tx was firebombed this June 2009. Never heard all that, huh?
Simultaneous demonization and Liberal intolerance of conservatives, and criminilzation of conservative thought, eg. new movement to criminalize discussion against illegal immigration, is an outrage and needs to be stopped.
Facts: Conservative are more educated and more tolerant of other people and groups. It's the conservatives that are getting attacked and banned on college compuses, and MSM. Get engaged and fight back!

A moving story. To think the White House Communications Director is actually comfortable enough to praise Mao in public tells an incredible amount about this administration.
I do some business in China. I am amazed at how they have become Capitalists. It's like the US in the early days. They are going to go by us like the house by the side of the road.
I really have to wonder if anyone left in the Republican Party has even the slightest clue about what communism is. Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of communism or socialism would see pretty clearly that the Obama Administration's policies are nowhere even close to socialist or communist policies — light years apart. Even Joseph McCarthy would wonder what is wrong with people today. It's absurd and it makes you look like you don't understand even the most basic ideas of politics. Obama is a centrist and even center-right on many issues.
As for quoting Mao Tse-Tung, that's something any poli sci student does, just like people study Sun Tzu, Goebbels, Gandhi, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar or any other historical figure who commanded millions or even billions of people. In the real world, that's what people do — they study significant historical figures. George Bush studied Mao and suggested to Karl Rove that he read Mao's biography. Ralph Reed is on the record, quoting Mao Tse-Tung. It's pretty common to quote major historical figures.

It is nothing less than astounding that this speech got so little notice or publicity. For a White House aide to say that one of the two philosophers she turns to most often just so happens to be the greatest mass murderer in the history of the world is jaw dropping. You would figure that somehow she got this juvenile crush by those responsible for vetting presidential aides and after publicly uttering such nonesense, she would very quickly be shown the door. Surely someone in the White House knows that this "philosopher" was responsible for at least 50 million deaths. Doesn't it seem just a bit unseemly for such a man to be adored by anyone at 1600 Penn. Ave. ? By the way, the 50 milliion figure is very low due to the rural character of the Chinese countryside, where countless Chinese simply vanished without any record of their deaths. His legacy continues to this day. I have been there twice, so I know a little bit of what I speak.
Ignore those people fleeing Cuba in cardboard rafts, risking being shot as they attempt to scale the Berlin wall, defecting in droves when a sports team is allowed to visit a free country. Those people simply do not understand that they are leaving a paradise on earth.

Give me a break, really. This "Obama is a secret communist" is done so that people who don't know what they're talking about will push the linear political spectrum further to the right, forcing Obama to the right (as explained in my other reply, re: Obama's center-right policies). Obama is governing from the center and, in many critical cases, from the center-right. Especially by global standards, this is a center-right administration, so far.
What is even ONE "socialist" policy that Obama has advocated? There isn't one.
Can you tell me one Maoist policy position advocated by the Obama Administration? And, since I doubt you'll be able to do that, are you able to even articulate one Maoist policy position, embraced by a US president, past or present?

The ignorance being displayed here is anyone who believes that the Obama Administration is advocating any communist or socialist policy positions. Frankly, I don't think most conservatives even know what socialism or communism is, if they believe that anything Obama is doing fits that description.
I'd challenge anyone here to identify even one "communist" or "socialist" or "Maoist" policy position that has been advocated by the Obama Administration. I'm not talking about a "social democratic" policy position (e.g. Tony Blair). A communist or socialist one. Anyone?

The "media" and the entire world had the exact same intelligence reports that we had and they all agreed it needed to be done. Those against the war only showed up AFTER the leftist media, desperate for anything to grasp onto before the coming elections, started harping about the lack of WMD's as if that were the only reason to invade Iraq and chemical weapons suddenly didn't fit in that category.

As for the "international image", Obama isn't doing anything that Americans care for even if it were a positive change. Which it isn't. In his short presidency he has managed capitulate to the Russians with nothing to show for it, alienate our close European allies and leave them defenseless, and completely shun our best South American ally Honduras. He has done very little for our "image" as though we care what foreign interlopers think.
I find very few instances where Bush was "babbling and stuttering like a halfwit", but I find several with Obama completely lost without his rehearsed speeches written for him or his trusty teleprompter.
