Dore Gold: The Rise of Nuclear Iran
by Robert J. AvrechSeveral days ago, I was invited by One Jerusalem, to attend a private briefing by Dore Gold, former Israeli Ambassador to the U.N., whose important new book, The Rise of Nuclear Iran: How Tehran Defies the West, has just been published.
There were about fifteen of us—bloggers mostly, including my good friend, the brilliant blogger, Omri Ceren of Mere Rhetoric—gathered in the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Ambassador Dore Gold
Ambassador Gold, looking like a sleepy walrus, spoke in measured, diplomatic tones. But he was fiercely passionate and profoundly knowledgeable about Iranian history, culture, and diplomacy, past and present.
Point by point, Gold emphasized his main thesis:
The Iranian nuclear threat is not just a danger to Israel and the Middle East, but to the West. International complacency, as the Iranians reach the nuclear finish line, warned Gold, is deeply disturbing. This is a subject that should be in the headlines every single day, instead we are confronted with quietism, and yawns expressing an attitude of: “So what?”
The international community, explained Gold, points to Pakistan and North Korea as unstable regimes that possess nuclear weapons and yet they have been contained. Thus, why not view Iran in the same light?
The weakness of this argument reflects a misreading of Iran’s long term strategic goals. Neither Pakistan nor North Korea are attempting regional supremacy. Pakistan is focused on its bottomless conflict with India, and North Korea has no plans to conquer Japan; the Norks, in fact, are focused on maintaining their iron grip on the reins of power.
Iran, on the other hand, is an imperialist Islamic theocracy seeking to export their Shia revolution.
For instance, the Mullahs consider Bahrain to be a lost Persian province, and they also lay claim to slices of Iraq that are home to a Shia majority, including the holy cities of Nadjaf and Karballah. And of course, Iran has threatened, numerous times, to wipe Israel off the map. Further, unlike Pakistan or North Korea, there is no deterrence with Iran.
The Mullahs are prepared to sacrifice millions in order to achieve their expansionist aims.
This was proven during the bloody eight-year war with Iraq. The Iranians recovered territory snatched by Iraq after just two years, but chose to continue warfare for six long years at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Iranian lives.
The Revolutionary Guard used children—wearing plastic keys to heaven around their necks—as human minesweepers.
A regime that so callously murders its own young—martyrdom operations—is, by definition, capable of anything in the name of Allah.
Hence, the calculus of Cold War deterrence—Mutual Assured Destruction—no longer applies.
“Remember,” said Ambassador Gold, “there were no Communist suicide bombers.” Contrast this to the Arab Muslim world where suicide bombers and their families enjoy enormous status.
Iran, emphasized Ambassador Gold, is the world’s greatest exporter of terror. Through various, well-funded proxy armies—Hizbullah, Hamas, etc.—the Iranians have been kidnapping, torturing and killing Americans and Israelis since Ayatollah Khomenei’s Islamic revolution in 1979. And the West has never punished the Iranians for their murderous behavior. Thus the Iranians are encouraged to keep killing for there is never any payback.
The West consistently views Iranian behavior and intentions through the prism of Western values. This is a mistake the West repeats over and over again, refusing to learn from past experience. Gold’s book is filled with footnoted facts about countless Iranian outrages.
Ambassador Gold emphasized that, contrary to popular opinion, every American administration, from Carter to Obama—including George Bush—has engaged Iran in vigorous diplomacy. And every single administration has been snookered by the Iranians, who consider it perfectly acceptable to lie to the enemy. The Islamic doctrine of taquia, elevates this behavior to a religious duty.
And make no mistake about it, the Iranians are intractable in their belief that the West, Christians and Jews, are the eternal enemy.
Time and again, the Iranians have skillfully used dialog and diplomacy to buy time in order to achieve their regional ambitions.
Ambassador Gold would not comment on Israeli military plans for Iran. Nor would he be drawn into commenting on American military cooperation with Israel.
But Gold was quite adamant on two points:
1. Iran is determined to cross the nuclear finish line.
2. Sanctions cannot work.
On my notepad, I scribbled one word in bold script at the end of the briefing: Sobering.
I have always believed that military action is the only option that will be effective against the Mullahs. It’s not a pretty option, but it’s far better than allowing this cruel state to achieve nuclear breakout.
![]()
Ponder this scenario: if Iran achieves nuclear capability, transnational Islamic terrorism will be sheltered by a nuclear umbrella, a deterrence—military and diplomatic—that will shield them from any consequences of their terrorist outrages. Further, nuclear weapons—suitcase dirty bombs—will proliferate among non-state Islamic terrorists, and nuclear blackmail will become coin of the realm.
This scenario could easily tip the balance of world power in favor of the Islamist radicals who are determined to subjugate the West and bring about a barbaric 7th century Caliphite.
The laughter you hear over the soundtrack are the Iranians snickering at the credulity of the West.
Currently, the Iranians mock Obama, correctly sensing an administration whose only strategy is: “More talk.”
The Europeans, gutless appeasers, have turned a blind eye. The Russians and the Chinese enable the Iranians at most every turn.
So once again, as with Iraq’s Osirik nuclear reactor, it’s up to Israel to protect itself—and Western civilization.

If this administration is afraid to confront the Iranian requme, because of consequences, imagine the consequences of one, nuclear detonation in Jerusalem.
Been saying things like this for years myself; and I'm one who's nowhere near on par with Ambassador Gold. But then I do have many relatives in Israel with whom I converse.
With each day, Israel moves closer to an inevitable confrantation with Iran. It would be nice if they could count on the US for back up. Unfortunately, with Obama knuckling under to Russian pressure, we are quickly becoming impotent. Big things are gonna happen…and they ain't good.

How true Mr Avrech. So many of the world's ills have been coaxed from Iranian soil, first by Carter and his "religious friend Khomeini" when the Shah wouldn't pay up to his new demands, now with the appeasing Obama crowd and their fevered Palestinians protectors. Israel's friends, like the Kurds, are only themselves and their abilty to defend their people. America's schizophrenia about Israel is wholly an invention of the media and their direction by the State Dept since they were thwarted by Truman in 47. Most Americans support Israel and will welcome the destruction of their nuclear program, we just lack the voice to make it heard.
Once again the media has failed the people, and that's why we blog and appreciate you and Breitbart so much.
the iranian people would gladly overthrow the corrupt mullahocracy if they only had some support, but the world has gone soft. the russians haven't stopped playing hardball, the arabs still pour their wahhabi billions into a toxic witches brew and the europeans still practice the antisemitism that has stained them since the first pogrom. now with the obama group, the samantha powers of the group hold the floor, let's the daisy cutters and bunkerbusters find their way to natanz
American Jews voted in droves for the trendy Obama. They have left Israel to the wolves. The world capital of anti-semitism may be New York City.

I'll be happy when Iran is the worlds largest glass paved parking lot. Go get em. A hawk will kill a dove every time.
And Biden spews, referring to the decision to shelve missile defense in Europe, that he is not "concerned about the Iranian potential" to destabilize the region.
Obama's strategy of appeasement will meet with the same success that appeasement has historically engendered. It's an overwhelming embarrassment. We have become France.
We will only have become France when we the people follow the Obama regime in lockstep.
Could you all please take one position and stick to it? One moment conservatives want to murder every Iranian, the next they support the noble Iranian people.
When President Obama took office, the Russians immediately ran to appease him, by unilaterally declaring they were canceling plans to deploy missiles near Poland. Remember that? Probably not, given that in the USA, our nutty conservative MSM didn't see that news fit to report. They do, however, see fit to report that President Obama is an appeaser.
Back in the real world, no one is appeasing anyone. The USA and Russia cut a deal. They don't deploy missiles, we don't deploy a shield. Everyone wins. Diplomacy and compromise, it's how the grownups do things.
Stratfor has a fine analysis of the Russian/American situation. It was written before Obama scrapped the missile defense, but it's worthy of attention: http://hosted.verticalresponse.com/442059/20b54a6...
Uhm,.. The shield had nothing to do with Russia and everything to do with Iran developing a nuke that could strike Europe, which they are happily working on.
Unfortuneately, we stopped production of Daisy Cutters a while ago. Always a favorite of mine!
Geography says otherwise. Poland is a great spot for intercepting missiles from Russia, not such a great spot for intercepting missiles from Iran.
While the Mullahs don't hesitate to send children out to be killed, I question whether they're interested in the one way stairway to paradise. It's probably too late to stop them in their quest for a nuke or in their ability to deliver same. Instead of bombing Osarik, Israel or the West should isolate and identify each Mullah and quietly let him know that IF a nuke goes off ANYWHERE, his ass is grass if it takes a century. We're not after killing everyone in Tehran or bombing a port, we're after his bony fanatic posterior and there is no where on earth he can hide that we won't get him. Each one. Every one. And when a replacement is nominated, him, too! Then let's see how interested they are in bombing Israel or the West..
Also of interest is that emerging Iran-Venezula-Russia axis that will soon transform South America.
In other words, Obama is performing magnificently as "Carter II".
The US knows that Iran has been consistenlty sending pretty sophisticated IEDs to be used in Iraq as roadside bombs against American Troops – with no retaliation from the US. The'd love to put a small Nuke or three in a few American Military bases, or maybe a few American cities.
There are two sides to every story. Unfortunately they are eminating from the same person

The only thing that can change the course of the this Admin. is the American people, and the Admin is counting on the people being tired of Middle East concerns, so they can do as they please. The public has to get as worked up about this as they are about spending and healthcare. In the meantime, our leaders will hold hands with enemies of freedom while they stab us in the back.
If this administration is afraid to confront the Iranian threat, because of consequences, imagine the consequences of one, nuclear detonation in Jerusalem, or America.
DEPENDS WHICH WAY YOU POINT THE MISSLES, DUMBA**!
TRUE DAT!
Sobering indeed. The Obama administration refuses to see the futility of diplomacy and talk with the theocracy that is Iran. Thanks to the race baiting over his head peanut farmer Carter for his initial inept work in enabling this Middle East enemy. It apparently will fall to the Israelis to stop this runaway train's expansionist plans. The West's only real hope, if there is any, is the next generation of Iranians and their rejection of the mullah dominated system of government thta puts so little value on life and liberty.
The dope smokin peaceniks of the 60"s are now in control of America.Israel will be left to the wolves.America has a big stick, but is incapable of using it.As the American Indian would say, much thunder, much lightening,no rain.
Robert,
You have presented the MILD arguments of Dore Gold. Iran has test launched missiles from ships. Iran is working on EMP nukes. 2 nukes over US and we are in stone age times! One Nuke over Europe stone age times! As for Israel well I don't want to think about how Iran wants to deal with Israel.
Kenneth R. Timmerman
Iran has carried out missile tests for what could be a plan for a nuclear strike on the United States, the head of a national security panel has warned.
"If even a crude nuclear weapon were detonated anywhere between 40 kilometers to 400 kilometers above the earth, in a split-second it would generate an electro-magnetic pulse [EMP] that would cripple military and civilian communications, power, transportation, water, food, and other infrastructure," the report warned.
In testimony before the House Armed Services Committee and in remarks to a private conference on missile defense over the weekend hosted by the Claremont Institute, Dr. William Graham warned that the U.S. intelligence community “doesn’t have a story” to explain the recent Iranian tests.
One group of tests that troubled Graham, the former White House science adviser under President Ronald Reagan, were successful efforts to launch a Scud missile from a platform in the Caspian Sea.
“They’ve got [test] ranges in Iran which are more than long enough to handle Scud launches and even Shahab-3 launches,” Dr. Graham said. “Why would they be launching from the surface of the Caspian Sea? They obviously have not explained that to us.”
Another troubling group of tests involved Shahab-3 launches where the Iranians "detonated the warhead near apogee, not over the target area where the thing would eventually land, but at altitude,” Graham said. “Why would they do that?"Graham chairs the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack, a blue-ribbon panel established by Congress in 2001.
Screw Israel. Maybe they can get their asses together and stop stealing land, occupying territory, commiting war crimes in the name of self defense, end their racism, deal with the fact that the reason Arabs and most of the entire united nations hates them is because they're racist asshole jerks who are not representative of Jews who want peace, jews who want to coexist with other religions and jews who don't believe they're the "chosen people".
Like that guy said. Obama is being a grown up doing things the way grown ups do things. Please go to your rooms you uneducated dumbfuck conservatives.
Gibran, the arabs had their chance at living peacably with their neighbors. They chose not to, attacked and got a good drubbing in '48 and ever since. While you are conducting your scientific polls from your seat in the UN council chamber on Israeli popularity, I suggest you read up on all the history of not only UN involvement in negotiations, but American diplomacy in the region, which has recently taken a turn away from a nation that we were involved in creating.
By the way, wash out the hole underneath your nose before you kiss your mother.
Further, the Russians did not run to appease Obama. They got him to sit down and agree to down grade the number of "redundant" nuclear weapons. This is meaningless. If you have 100 nukes and you dismantle one or two you still have the exact same nuclear capabilities as before. That's why the Russians agreed to the deal and gave nothing of substance in return. Putin, an old KGB hand, is playing hardball. Obama is playing Kumbaya. Putin continues to supply Iran with technical assistance for their nuclear weapon and they, along with China, continue to block all serious sanctions against Iran. Thus, in the end, Obama revealed dangerous naivete and weakness. We will now see the Russians intimidate Ukraine, Georgia, Poland and Czechoslovakia, countries with troops fighting with us in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now America's allies, all over the world, no longer feel that we are a reliable.
The most difficult military mission is to kill a single person. Thus Usama bin Laden is still alive. Shabak, the Isralei secret service, will sometimes spend years hunting and assassinating a single terrorist.
Israel will attack and neutralize the Iranian program. Saudi Arabia has already given Israel fly over rights for the attack. The Sunni Gulf states are counting on Israel. The Sunnis are furious with Obama for his refusal to properly read the Persian threat.
No land was stolen. This is a classic big lie.
Israel is the Jewish biblical homeland and has been for over 3,000 years, pre-dating Islam by several centuries.
As for being the chosen people, well the meaning of the phrase is that Jews were "chosen to receive the Torah." The pejorative meaning you imply is a product of:
1) ignorance
or
2) Jew-hatred.
Ignorance is understandable and forgivable.
Jew-hatred is not.
Could you all please take one position and stick to it? One moment conservatives want to murder every Iranian, the next they support the noble Iranian people.
Can you drop the fallacies for once?
Is it too much of a groaner to suggest that "Osirik" needs to sustain a hit, a palpable hit?
Sounds like your Jewish girlfriend kicked you out. Obama said that our constitution is "a fundamentally flawed document". Thats why I didn't vote for the forked tongued false prophet fear mongering usurper-in-chief.
[...] North Korea, Iran, China, Cuba, Venezuela, and al-Qaida all see that Obama is weak and are taking advantage of him [...]
m
I don't know who you are but you are very bright. And I appreciate the clarity, and strength put forward in your statement.
