I remember the images of fathers and sons, armed, defending their boarded up shops from the raging mob. It was the only sane image of L.A. I saw on the news. The rest of it reminded me of the riots in Newark, New Jersey without the tanks.

Well, actually, the surrender negotiated with Japan was conditional. The Emperor was to 'remain in power', so to speak ( a prudent move, as it turns out). A small detail. But your point is well taken .
