I think that is the only way you could possibly view them and retain your sanity. You know that they can't be believed and can't constantly try to parse what is or isn't true in what they say.

I worked with a narcissist borderline sociopath last summer and thought I was losing my mind half the time. Had to quit since she was my boss and there really wasn't much alternative. So did everyone else. This woman starts a new crew about every three months.

Am loving this series. I wanted to know how it all ended at first, now I'm dreading the end. Thanks!

The butlerdidit:

My head was spinning when I was in the prison. Truth, lies, fantasy... I usually split the difference. Thanks so much for the kind words. Let me know how you react to the film now that you've read this series. Glad you're no longer in the abusive relationship.

Rich:

I get some of my best dialog from, well, real life. I had it in my first draft and then, somehow, it got lost in subsequent drafts.

Sigh.

I'll use it in another film.

But you have to understand something. What we view as truth, and they observe as truth, are two different things. In her mind, this is her truth. I don't think she was being disingenuous, she most likely believed this to be obtainable. It is a dream. Her dream. I cannot fathom what I would do living there, but I can imagine a reality for myself with a totally different makeup. I was married to an abusive man for 14 yrs. I learned to dream of a life where I would have a much better life, no chaos, and nothing happening day to day. I was lucky enough to obtain this. I feel pretty confident that most inmates play people to be sympathetic to their cause, but something about this rings very true for me. Great writing once more, Robert. I am going to watch the movie again, as I said before, I only remember seeing pieces of it, at the time. Honestly though, I can't imagine the movie could live up to the richness of the picture you paint with your words. Powerful.

So is Eden's character portrayed in the young black middle class woman who killed her attackers at home? Upon reflection I'll put my money on Ellen Burstyn's character.

I can tell you that Evil is an entity to itself - not just a "psychological condition". The prison's are full of inmates who will convince you that they didn't do it. And believe it.

Look at Ted Bundy - he lured woman with his nice dress and demeanor. They didn't have a clue as to his intentions.

i believe a mistake liberal "reformers" make when talking about "prison reform" is to not recognize this.

I teared up at Eden's description of her fantasy life. It's so sad because in some ways it is such a simple life and yet it is completely unattainable for her. The wages of sin indeed. I'm curious to know how much Eden is playing you and how much is for real. Did you ever decide how much to believe her: her regret, her tears, and her dream? Or is that for a later installment?
