Masterpiece Jew Haters
by Robert J. AvrechI must have missed a few subtle literary points in college when I was taking a Charles Dickens seminar.
I missed the spot where Fagin, in Oliver Twist, is wearing a gigoondo yarmulke.
Also, blasting right by yours truly—alas, never the best of students—is the part where Fagin abstains from eating pork chops because they’re not kosher.
Who knew that Fagin was an observant Jew?
And I must have skipped the part where Fagin—going all bi-polar—talks to himself in fractured Hebrew and intones: “Never trust the goyim.”

Timothy Spall as Fagin: “Never trust
the goyim.” Gotta check the Cliff notes.
Fagin’s thick as lard accent—whoops, forgot Fagin is religious, let’s make that syrup—eastern European accent pegs him as an immigrant street rat, a dirty foreigner seducing and corrupting young British manhood.
Last night I was flipping through my 150 channels—you can get obese watching all the cooking shows—when I stumbled on this new adaptation of Oliver Twist.
What a surprise, I didn’t know I had access to Al Jazeera. It was kind of scary, I mean, I know the Arab world is a sewer of Jew-hatred, but this Fagin is pretty darn close to the image of the evil Jew pushed by the Nazi propaganda machine.
He’s not just the Jew, he’s the devil.
This Fagin is such a leering, salivating monster that I wouldn’t be surprised if, in next week’s exciting installment, he molests a few doe-eyed kids then slaughters them so he can use their blood to bake matzo.
The Blood Libel is alive and well in the Arab Muslim world and making headway, once again, in oh-so-civilized Europe.
Imagine my surprise when the station ID popped up and I discovered that this was not Al Jazeera, but PBS.
Okay, I really wasn’t surprised.
Just as I wasn’t surprised that this grotesquely anti-Semitic Oliver Twist is a British production. Most sane people recognize that Britain, in about 25 years, will be ruled by Sharia and cheerily Judenrein.
Say hello to the happy-go-lucky 7th century.
In truth, early editions of Oliver Twist were tainted by Jew hatred. But Dickens bravely confronted this bigotry and eliminated anti-Semitism from all subsequent editions. He knew it was wrong. He knew it was poison.
Not so for this BBC productions. They have departed from the standard text and and defaulted to the Jew-hatred that Dickens rejected.
Next PBS Jane Austen adaptation, be prepared for the slick, bad boy Jew who steals fortunes from unsuspecting fine ladies and seduces and abandons Christian virgins.
My fainting couch is positioned right in front of the TV.
European Jew-hatred is so common, so darn fashionable that Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist is now part of the arsenal to make Jew-hatred acceptable.
Director Coky Giedroyc and writer Sarah Phelps are the chief criminals in this vile exercise in sophisticated Jew-hatred. They will, no doubt, argue that they are restoring a fresh perspective to Fagin’s Jewishness. This is the corrupt academic language of deconstruction, where “texts” have no real meaning, where all interpretations are equally valid.
Naturally, it’s a one-way deconstructionist street.
You can bet your bottom dollar that no Muslim would ever appear in such a dark light in a BBC production. Because the Islamists would issue a fatwa and Giedroyc and Phelps would be living under 24/7 protection.
No doubt, this dynamic Jew-hating duo would hunker down with The Koran and deconstruct it in order to prove that beheading is not terribly sporting.
But it’s open season on Jews because, well, what are we going to do but protest in print, be dismissed as right wing nut jobs, or y’know, pushy Jooz.
Question: why does PBS exist?
Oh right, desperately needed government support for people—and by people, I mean losers—who can’t make a living in the business.
Your tax dollars at work.

Good article about a disturbing trend.
Compare this Fagin to Ron Moody's Oscar-winning turn in the Carol Reed musical. Ron Moody's Fagin was a lovable saviour. His Jewishness was there, but it was entirely benign.
Wow welcome to the next round of people to go into the ovens. First Christans and now Jews. I wonder if liberals ever considered what is going to happen when the wheel turns, as it always does and they find the teeth in that gearage tearing at their tender flesh?
Now, Gordon. Proggies are nothing if not polite: "After Jooooooooo."
Having said that, the next Jane Austen adaptation is liable to be Pride & Extreme Prejudice Against Zombies. You should ask John Nolte about that, Robert.
Question – why does PBS exist? Add NPR to that equation and it all beats me! It's a moneypit. Not only does the NEA fund it, but so do corporate underwriters, who get tax deductions, and each state kicks-in funding from the school districts and General funds (more tax dollars that most people don't even think about). The rest is made up from local supporters through telethons and totebags. They buy most of their programming from the BBC (which now has cable channels of their own). __Back in the olden days, when you usually just had the three networks, there was an argument for the service. When cable started impacting, A&E was an experiment from the Hearst Corp. It was an alternative PBS, offering the same mix of culture, nature and unwatchable British shows. When that failed, they decided to go for a mass audience, which proves that in the marketplace, PBS, in it's current format is not economically viable. I say let 'em go commercial, and put that money for property tax relief. With the 200+ cable stations, you can find similar programming somewhere else, and when the libs cry over the loss of this most sacred of cows, we can blame it all on the jooz…
Interesting how the Left infiltrated PBS and NPR almost as soon as they bubbled up out of the political sewer.
This is a disturbing article in that it suggests an acceptance of Dhimmitude by Europeans (and Americans?)
It's the "Better Red Than Dead" crowd at work behind the scenes. Only this time it's "Better Muslim than Dead".
Because of the propaganda they've been fed by Lefty professors and Lefty journalists, most people have no real clue as to what life is like for gays, women and non-Muslims under Dhimmitude. When they get a clue, they'll expect the courageous to step in and fix things — as they always have.
As a Gentile, I can't claim to have experienced anti-semitism personally. However, as an ardent supporter of Israel and one who is not afraid to speak out on the matter I have experienced many situations where people on the opposite side from me appeared to be motivated by nothing but hatred for Jews. They will whine and cry and start petitions when they hear about Palestinian militants being killed but do absolutely nothing when Israeli children are killed by rockets.
I think the capacity to hate Jews is within all of us, even in other Jews (Norman Finklestein for one). I firmly believe that the Jews are God's chosen people and as such our sinful nature sets us against them. Not that everyone is a Jew-hater, but I believe everyone has the ability to be one. Throughout history nations have risen up against the nation of Israel simply because it is there, and as long as the Jews are there they are a reminder, even to the most agnostic among us, that God is real and we are ultimately accountable to Him.
Yes, Collins, but the Zombies will represent the illegal Zionist State against the oppressed, yet peace-loving Hamas.
Well, never trust the Green Goyim, anyway. I didn't know James Wolcott had a doppelganger.
Shouldn't the Zombies represent the UN?
I had the chance to see that latest adaptation of Oliver Twist on PBS, but decided against it, and now I'm glad I didn't watch it. If I wanted to watch a film laced with anti-Semitism, I would…..no, wait, I would never dignify crap like that with a viewing under any circumstances.
The NAZIS are always referred to as "Right Wing" by the left. They seem to forget that the NAZIS were the "National Socialist Party". Take a look at the tactics of the NAZIS and they often mirror those used by people of the Left today. PBS is just another Left Wing Propaganda outlet. The Left in the USA support Hamas and others like them. The Left wants to throw open the gates of Gitmo, smash the free speech of anyone they disagree with. The list goes on and on. "If it walks like a Duck and quacks like one……..
You made a very good point, blackhawk12151. The thought of the Palestinians as the underdogs always annoy me because in the larger picture, it has always been Israel which has been the underdog. The Palestinians have been, and are still, used as pawns by Israel's neighbors and the media, and some people, for whatever reason, buy all that crap.
Indeed, the fact that the Jews are God's chosen people has been the sole reason for my uneqivocal support of Israel. And you are quite right, everybody has the ability to be anti-Semitic, just like everybody has the ability to do anything and everything, good and bad alike.
It surprised be by how "jewish" they played the character but big deal. I guess jewish characters can't be bad guys. I was offended by the potrayal of bill sykes an English "christian" as thief and killer. get over yourselves!
Well, ousslander, after some consideration I can say, consider yourself one of them.
The other Arab and Muslim countries will publicly support the Palestinians but you are right, they are nothing but pawns. In the hierarchy of the Arab nations there is no doubt that the Palestinians come in at the bottom.
I watched this production, and was also surprised by the "Jewishness" of Fagin. However, Fagin also seems to genuinely care about the kids, while Sykes is truly evil. So for me, it's a wash. Yes, Fagin is Jewish and does bad things, but he also has some redeeming qualities.
The entire "left vs right" paradigm of political thought is just asinine.
To say that the entire spectrum of political thought lies between Communism on the extreme left and Fascism on the extreme right makes as much sense as to say the entire spectrum of musical styles lies between West Coast hip hop on one end and East Coast hip hop on the other.
The reality is, "the left" likes the "left vs right' paradigm because they can always claim their opposition, no matter how sane, reasonable or even "centrist" is still closer to being a bunch of murderous Nazis than they are. Its also why liberals love to misuse the term "Neo-con" by using the term to label ACTUAL conservatives because it sounds vaguely like "Neo-Nazi".
Its all about foisting labels on your opponents that they have to remove before they can actually get to the substance of their argument (and by that time the liberals have claimed victory and left).
I guess it all depends on what kind of hats they are wearing. Only the costume designer will be able to answer that question.
Holly, the question is, what message is this meant to convey? Dickens certainly doesn't represent Fagin as anything like an observant Jew, so what's the angle? I'm not trying to be confrontational. I just want to know what this is supposed to add to the production.
Seeing what is happening in Britain with the Nanny Statism and the rising anti-Semitism is kind of like watching an older cousin you've long admired slip into drug addiction and become lost to you. It's hard to watch the decline and know you can't help those who don't want to be helped.
There was a time, in my extreme innocence, that I would never have conceived of the idea that, after the Holocaust, there would be a time on this earth when open, rabid anti-Semitism would once again be the order of the day and perfectly acceptable. And yet, every day we read of some new and hideous incident in which the Jew is, once again, portrayed as evil incarnate while true evil is allowed to exist and flourish. And, in fact, encouraged. I despair. What on earth will become of us? We are in tribulus times and life is going to be dangerous and tough for Jews and dissenters of the party line.
Agreed, Mike. Ron Moody is Fagin! His "I'm reviewing the situation…" is a great musical moment.
Seems to me that Fagin is being represented as less an observant Jew than a character who makes references and uses certain words to constantly remind the audience of his Jewishness. And it doesn't seem integral to the character but forced.creepy and unnecessary. If I recall there is no direct reference to Fagin's Jewishness in Polanski's Oliver Twist. Another thing…am I the only one who is constantly reminded of the late Divine by Spall's performance? Finally, people who "genuinely care about kids" don't send them out to steal, kidnap them and throw them into dungeons.
I must have grown up in some sort of weird "ubertolerant" bubble because frankly before this article I had no idea Fagin was supposed to be a Jew (nor do I recognize all these tell tale signs of Jewry) nor do I understand why we're supposed to hate Jews (especially since I was raised to worship a Jewish carpenter as the Son of God).
I guess that's what I get for being raised in a backwater, backward, intolerant, close minded place like Kansas.
The useful parts of PBS, for adults like the how-to and even the travel shows, have been extracted and sent to Create, now the easier-to-google CreateTV, http://www.createtv.com (NOT dot org), a very-much commercial site for selling the books and videos. I found the broadcast as an additional DTV channel of the over-the-air local PBS station, it may be available by your cable or satellite provider.
Which marks the most useful thing PBS has done in decades, and at the least indicates someone has noticed the public-begging business model may be running out of time and the groundwork is being done for a possible all-commercial (yet commercial-free?) stand-alone system.
If there's one thing that this helps underscore, it's the fact that the Zionist conspiracy that runs all the media is about the most impotent conspiracy ever constructed, seeing as how they cannot even keep PBS from doing antisemetic shows. Why, it's almost enough to make you think the Zionist conspiracy was INVENTED by antisemetic racists or something….
Missed a few subtle literary signals? Yeah, like reading the book. Dickens refers to Fagin as "the Jew" as often as he calls him by name. And portrays him as a grasping, nasty, stereotypical evil Jew. That's why just the portrayal of the character has been problematic in just about every film adaptation. Or do you believe that David Lean was secretly trying to bring Muslim rule to Britain, too?
Oh, wait. Lean commited the blasphemy of making Arabs the good guys and the English the bad guys in Lawrence of Arabia. He must have been allied with the Taliban.
This growing trend of anti-semitism is the canary in the coal mine. And the canary is dying. I am not Jewish, but this hatred for Jews and the state of Israel must be confronted and fought and defeated at every turn. No exceptions.
Wow. No really wow. There is a way of creating the character of Fagin without diving into Der Sturmer's archives is there not?
Of course WR1 has to make the usual anti semetic leftist statement. Good for you WR1. You and Mullah Omar must be awesome pals.
I may be wrong, but I got a different impression from Fagin's overt Jewishness. I thought it looked like they were trying to cast him in the “misunderstood minority” role, as is often done with Shakespeare’s Shylock nowadays.
Mr A,
I know this is no laughing matter, but I can't help admiring your wit.
Respects
why does PBS exist? Add NPR to that equation and it all beats me!
Answer: because when the Republicans ran congress and the WH they didn't have the testical fortitude to completely defund it and then drive a stake through it's heart. Any channel (e.g. BBC) that's relies on the government for funding is going to be on the side of more of that funding.
From what I've read, Dickens intentionally portrayed Fagin as a Jew, referring to his ethnicity as a Jew many times. He had every intention of portraying the Jew in a negative light. I am not surprised that the BBC chose to emphasize this aspect and I am not surprised PBS broadcast it uncritically. As a Jew I have come to expect this from both entities.
No, Lola…WR1 didn't make an "anti-semitic leftist statement", he was merely pointing out that the inflammatory stuff in Oliver Twist is contained not only in Dickens' original text, but the 1940's David Lean/Alec Guiness version as well. It is a big stretch to say that Spall's take on Fagin MUST be based on modern day overt hatred of Judaism or Israel while having absolutely nothing to do with either Dickens or David Lean.
Actors who perform Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice have the EXACT same problem as actors who play Fagin. Do you play Shylock AS WRITTEN, which undoubtedly will evoke legitimate criticisms of anti-Semitism, or do you censor the play for political correctness? Perhaps we should also remove the N-word from To Kill a Mockingbird for the exact same reason? See, Lola, it's not always as simple as you want to make it out to be.
It's not just about labels, it's about actions, such as quashing free speech, physically attacking speakers on campus the left disagrees with, destroying newspapers with opposing views, trying to burn the church Sara Palin attends, disarming the public with draconian gun laws, double standards for speech (left can be as racist as they want and never get criticised by the left press,). Telling the big lie over and over until it is accepted as the truth (the religion of Global Warming). Students afraid to speak their minds lest they be punished by the left wing professor. If you understood the tactics of the NAZIS you would recognize all of these as coming straight out of their old play book. You don't like what I wrote because it points out a lot of things about the left that are true and you just can't handle the truth. The most curious thing about this as far as Jews are concerned is how often Jews vote in lock step with the left especially when you look at the politics of the left and how anti-semetic it really is. Jews truly seem to go out of their way to kiss the hand that slaps them over and over again.
I was with you until that line … I'm agreeing with you pretty much 100%. I just used your comment as a jumping off point to point out how the left vs right paradigm is used by those on "the left" as a means of squashing honest debate.

I agree that Oliver Twist always seemed anti-Semitic to me, and the version I read must have been the self-expurgated one, so imagine what the earlier versions must have been like.
Fairly mild but unpleasant anti-Semitism was very common among the British intelligentsia before World War II; you see it among writers as varied as Eliot, Orwell, and Dorothy Sayers.
Spain right now is an extremely anti-Semitic place, probably partly because no one here has actually met a Jew, and so they don't see Jews as people like them. The last few hundred years of Spanish governments had a great deal to do with this, and the Franco regime's delusions of a "Judeo-Masonic-Bolshevik conspiracy" didn't help.
Erasmus I know you hvae real issues and need attention. Go see a doctor for it not me. I could give a rats furry bottom about you or your issues which is what your post addressed to me is all about. Stop stalking me all over this board. And WR1 is an anti semite leftist.
I am sorry but this column is an example of PC run amok – Fagin was a Jew; he was also corrupt and ugly. That's the character. Given that information, I think the actor and director took a fair degree of license. What your college professor maybe didnt tell you is that the character as written was even worse than this portrayal and it was not until many years after the book was published that Dickens understood the errors of his own prejudice (and many of the Jewish references were removed from later editions). Are you saying that they should have modified the Dickens character so not to offend? That they should have produced any other Dickens work, but not Oliver Twist? Do we really need to see another revisionist version of a literary work? Can't you trust that we're smart enough to get it?
Zundfolge – I did not know that universal healthcare, removal of gun rights, removal of the freedom of speech (e.g. Fairness Doctrine and Wilsonian tactics), the exploitation of crisis ("Never let a crisis go to waste" – Emanuel) were tactics of the right. Get it straight, Mussolini was a devote Socialist that found communism unfavorable due to the belief in a world order of organized workers vice a nationalist focus. Fascism is the lefts third way. Lieberman would be the Lyndon Larouche of the 1920's. The truth is the left loved Hitler and Mussolini even after Jews started disappearing.
"What Adolf Hitler & Co. did to Germany in less than six years was applauded wildly and ecstatically by most Germans. He lifted the nation from post-War defeatism. Under the swastika Germany was unified. His was no ordinary dictatorship, but rather one of great energy and magnificent planning. The "socialist" part of National Socialism might be scoffed at by hard-&-fast Marxists, but the Nazi movement nevertheless had a mass basis. The 1,500 miles of magnificent highways built, schemes for cheap cars and simple workers' benefits, grandiose plans for rebuilding German cities made Germans burst with pride. Germans might eat many substitute foods or wear ersatz clothes but they did eat. " – Time Man of the Year, 1938. History, aint it a b!tch.
At least America gets to benefit from another period of brain draining Europe. Bring it.
At least America gets to benefit from another period of brain draining Europe of Jewish talent. Bring it.
So, instead of actually addressing the issues, you hurl insults? You really are just a garden variety conservative cunt.
No, but this is part of the reason that I personally stated that Dickens didn't represent Fagin as an observant Jew. I don't understand that gesture in the film. I may be wrong, but I don't recall Fagin rejecting pork in the novel or refusing to roll on Shabbos. Is it meant to add "authenticity"? To heighten the hypocrisy? To demonstrate that people who are oppressed return as Dickensian grotesques in the return of the repressed?
Airborn, I think you and Rufus need to re-read my post.
My point about the left vs right paradigm being dumb is that using the left vs right paradigm to describe the reality of politics is foolish.
There is not a hairs breadth between Hitler and Stalin, between Nazism and Communism. To claim that they are on the opposite ends of the spectrum is what I'm saying is dumb. And is often used by those on "the left" to distract us from the substance of the issues and to paint mainstream American conservatives and Republicans as being nothing more than "Nazi-Lite".

Never have I had to defend myself so vociferously from those that apparently agree with me :p
Such negative characterizations seem to be ok when it comes to Jews, but not to other groups. Waiting for the day to see a stereotypical negative portrayal of a Muslim, African-American, Hispanic, etc. without the obligatory "good minority" for counterbalance.
Actually, seems to be ok when it comes to Evangelicals as well (even Catholics usually get the "good moderate Catholic" who is investigating the pedophile Priest).
At least on last night's "House," we got the priest who turned out NOT to be a pedophile, and who got back his lost faith after having a vision of Christ. Poor Dr. House was thrown for a loop — he'd been so smug about finding a nonbelieving priest, and then the priest had to go and start believing again. I love when that happens.
Thanks for drawing attention to this sort of thing. It would be a great service if this blog would routinely mention the trends in Europe as well in the US when it comes to anti-Semitic and anti-Christian bias. It's getting really freaky anymore.
No, actually, it's all "groups" who are stereotyped. It's a problem of vapidness among those who find stereotypes "theatrical".
"The pedophle Priest" is a negative stereotype. The REALITY is pedophiles — who always seek out jobs/professions where they assume they can find victims. All religious groups, education, healthcare, social groups…it's not isolated to just one among any of those, it's that pedophiles attempt to work their way into areas among (all) cultural congregations inorder to victimize.

Like how we "benefit" by having our wealth bled off to Israel? Funny how that works.
Who taught you this self-loathing? This is very strange and foreign to me.
LOL! I must have misread you, my bad. There was a real difference between Fascism and Communism – the Communists (and Marxists) were focused on the broader "workers of the world," whereas Fascists were focused on Nationalism.
Again, my apologies
I mean, honestly, get a load of our "Christian" Secretary of State.
Fresh-
Thanks for that sharp observation. I hadn't heard it expressed so clearly and concisely.
I couldn't agree more.. I can't for the life of me understand the new/old stance of appeasement for Islam and out right hatred towards Jews. The Neville Chamberlain approach to self defense didn't work to well the first time it was tried. Brits mocked Churchill for his out spoken stance against Nazi, then when they were knocking on the door he becomes a brilliant national hero.
I'm a Gentile but fully support Israels right to exist unless they start strapping bombs to themselves and start blowing up civilians for no other reason than the good book said so.
I'm starting to think that WW III has already started and no one noticed.
Amen to that, the Republicans performance for the last 8 years (minus Bush's fortitude to defend our country) has moved me into the Independent column. Then again Left and Right seem to be the same sort of evil. I think it's time for a third party to upset this never ending musical chairs of incompetence. The Senate needs term limits as well.
I think what Zundfolge is pointing out is that while in theory Communism and Fascism/Nazism have ideological differences the out comes of both forms of government comes down to the same thing, killing citizens who dissent.
Zundfolge is also pointing out that left vs. right is a smoke screen to keep real debate stifled in the mire. One can't actually begin to argue a point when the conversation starts off with Bush is just like Hitler. I'm pretty sure that most of the people that make that statement haven't had their neighbors and family members suddenly disappear in the middle of the night or for that matter in broad day light. Not to mention watching them get dragged out of their home and shot in front of all the neighbors.
While someone might want to argue a political point, first they have to spend all of their energy responding to ridiculous statements. Which makes sense when one doesn't have a leg to stand on. Why let someone point out fallacies if you can keep them busy with the inane.
If they didn't come in at the bottom you wouldn't see Egypt in such a hurry to stop of the flow of Palestinians into their country. I wish I could remember the program that I watched about Palestinians and a women actually came out and asked/pleaded why they had been forgotten by the rest of the Arab world.

[...] Masterpiece Jew Haters [...]
The simple fact is that fascism and communism are just different forms of socialism. Nazism is just fascism with the extra cancer of race-hatred. Fascists focused on creating a state socialism taking the wealth of a nation from its creators and redistributing it. Communism focused on creating a world socialism taking the wealth of the world from its creators and redistributing it.
So if fascism had won, there would have been a whole lot of socialist states, and if communism had won, there would have been one socialist world. Either way, its socialism. The only thing that could make things worse than the socialism was the addition of the totalitarian dictator (Hitler, Stalin, Mao).
And they all share the common trait of believing that government knows better than you what you should do with the fruits of your own labor. The only real argument among the old socialists was about who got to run the government and who they had to kill first to get there. The capacity of socialism to turn murderous has been amply demonstrated.
For all the gnashing of teeth over Darfur, why do liberals turn around and support policies that would result in genocide? Abandoning Israel and abandoning Iraq… I thought you guys placed a higher value on life. I'm beginning to think that winning political points is more valuable to you guys than protecting millions of people who rely on us, but I'll just give you the benefit of the doubt and convince myself that it's your naive idealism talking, and not some kind of morbid apathy.
Why does PBS exist? Why to show left leaning "news" programs that make Rather look like Hannity. And to show the entire WAITING FOR GOD series OVER AND FREAKING OVER AGAIN!
Now that Part 2 has aired will there be a follow up on the blatant Christian bashing at the end of the film? Fagin, at least, was faithful to the Fagin of the book. The courtroom scene? Anyone? Anyone?
great domain name for blog like this)))
