Add singer Beyoncé Knowles to that list:
On Sunday, Mediaite reported that singer Beyoncé Knowles had given a private New Year’s Eve performance for an exclusive crowd in St. Barth — and made the case that she had performed and been paid by relatives of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi (variously known as Khadafy, Qaddafi, Quadhafi and more). Atlanta-based blogger Necole Bitchie reported a $2 million fee; the UK Mirror reported a “six-figure sum” and yesterday Media Takeout made the same claim, repeating the $2 million number and confirming the Gaddafi-hosted party from a guest who was there (hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons also placed Beyoncé at a “Khadafy party.” Today Page Six confirms our original report, with one new piece of information: the party was thrown by Moutassim Gaddafi, known as Hannibal, son of the Libyan dictator who less than a week before made headlines for allegedly attacking his wife in a London hotel.
As far as I know, Beyoncé is not some washed-up has-been who’s been relegated to hawking skin care products and jewelry on infomercials or shilling for casino resorts in Las Vegas. She’s still at the top of her game, commanding big bucks on the legitimate concert circuit, in music sales and from corporate endorsements.
Did she really need to accept the reported $2 million paycheck from the family of Gaddafi?
Gaddafi has long been suspected of harboring terrorists. You’ll recall, of course, that Libya produced the creep who was responsible for the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988 – well before plane bombing had become all the rage amongst jihadists - murdering a total of 270 people in the air and on the ground. And Scotland, in its infinite wisdom, recently released the convicted bomber due to his supposed impending death from cancer. He not only received a hero’s welcome upon his arrival back in Libya (orchestrated, no doubt, by Gaddafi himself) but instead of going home or to the hospital to die surrounded by family and friends, he disappeared.
As Gomer Pyle might say, “Surprise, surprise, surprise!”
Gaddafi, the jewel of the Muslim world, also claims that Israel is to blame for all the conflicts in Africa, and his new buddy is Venezuelan “president for life” Hugo Chavez. You know, Chavez, who isn’t nearly as impressed with Obama as Gaddafi is and made the same reference to sulfur with regard to Obama as he did with Bush. Chavez, the guy who’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s new BFF and who is trying to flex his muscles down in Latin America. Chavez, the guy who is busy taking over as much of the private sector in Venezuela as possible. (That’s probably a plus for him, according to libs.)
Maybe Beyoncé has a soft spot for Gaddafi and his kin because Gaddafi is a big fan of The One (just like she is):
But when it came to America’s 44th president, Gaddafi offered only warm words, calling him “our son” and “our Obama,” and saying, “The election of Obama is the beginning of change.”
“We are content and happy if Obama can stay forever as the president,” Gaddafi said during a rambling, 95-minute speech during which he read from notes, exhausted at least one of his interpreters, threw the U.N. schedule into disarray, and put much of his audience to sleep.
Or maybe she’s just stupid.
But it’s not just Beyoncé who deserves recognition here: according to the Mediaite link above, others at the New Year’s Eve shindig include her hubby Jay-Z, Lindsay Lohan, Jon Bon Jovi, Usher, BET founder Bob Johnson and supermodels Miranda Kerr and Victoria Slivstedt. And let’s not forget Mariah Carey, who sang at last year’s party (along with Jay-Z), which was hosted by Gaddafi’s brother.
How pathetic that these people’s need for adoration and exclusivity outweighs their common sense, dignity and national pride.

I was really surprised when during research I learned the Jewish idea of the Messiah. Early Christianity was far closer to Judaism. Somewhere along the way, the converted pagans kept adding bits and pieces of their previous religions to Christianity.
For 100s of years, Mithraism was "THE" dominant religion, with Christianity being the fringe of the fringe. "Mystery" religions were popular and strong, throughout the Roman Empire. That all changed with Constantine, who as a soldier, would have been a follower of Mithra.
Mithra was born of a virgin and a god, his birthday was the equivalent of what is today December 25th, and both the titles given him, as well as those given to his mother, were appropriated by later Christians, for Jesus and His mother, Mary. The whole idea of an "after life" is pagan; Jews believed that once you were dead, you were dead, until Judgment Day, when they would all be judged and the good ones would then be alive, in a heaven on earth and then, in a state of bliss with GOD. That's a bit over simplified, but the core of it.
Agreed. I kind of like that thought, in death, heaven is not a place up in the clouds, its closeness to God, and hell is not underground with fire and devils with pitch forks, but rather an increased distance from God.

I assume he was impressed by their dedication to the point where they'd rather die than simply toss a few coins and mumble a prayer to an idol. But I'd love to find out the real reason.

Constantine's "conversion" was political/military. Is the story about his seeing a sign in the sky true, or apocryphal? I have no idea and neither does anyone else. I suppose it's a matter of "faith", or not, as to what one believes about it.
Before Constantine became a Christian, he was repulsed by Diocletian's persecution of the Christians and also thought it politically stupid.
The battle he was fighting, which took place during his "conversion", was seen by both him and the other side as the "new" ( Constantine ) versus the "old", politically as well as religiously and this was before his battlefield conversion. Why he chose what he did, is unclear. But converts are always stronger (one might even say fanatical ) in their beliefs, than those born to them.

The problem is that this is not American usage. But when a foreigner says neo-liberal, or even liberal, they are almost certainly not talking about US style liberal-leftism.

Just throwing this out there, but I think the real point of distinction isn't what particular economic form a country is practicing at the time but rather whether the government has power to change it at will. Some of these tyrants may have practiced what Synova calls "neo-capitalism" (I prefer state capitalism), allowing people to buy and sell on the open market, but that doesn't mean they've given up control over the economy. The overarching totalitarian structure is still there, allowing the rulers to interfere whenever they feel like it and begin actively directing the economy again. Even Lenin practiced a form of capitalism in his later years, but with every intention of returning to socialism once the opportunity arose.
It was ALWAYS socialism under Lenin and it's even worse under Mugabe.
Though the ANC, in South Africa, is a Communist party, it's the only one that might come close to being "neo-capitalist", but with a post-colonial/ultra tribal overlay.

A socialist or communist government may show superficial aspects of capitalism, but not really if by capitalism one means the ability to engage in industry and commerce without fear of third party (in this case, government) intervention. Ultimately, in a totalitarian state the capacity always exists for the central power to step back in and impose more edicts on economic activity. This is what Lenin's NEP (New Economic Policy) was; he permitted market exchanges of some, mostly agricultural, goods, but this was never intended as (or amounted to) anything other than a temporary measure after the economy had been wrecked by "War Communism."

The African presidents you named, and certainly Chavez, are leftists. They are redistributionists. They are socialists. I read what you had to say, I read what Koschei had to say and don't agree with some of what you wrote and believe that Koschei may or may not be a non-American, but that poster is off base.
Nelson Mandela has been a card carrying COMMUNIST, all of his adult life, as well as a terrorist, a redistributionist, a tribalist Xhosa ( they were brought into South Africa as slaves, by the Zulus, which is on reason Mandela hates the Zulus and worked to destroy them ) , and less of a South African that those descended from the early Boer settlers. No one in government, not the president, not the fed, not the secretary of treasury, no one can "fix" the economy. The economy is not a machine that needs parts replaced, and a little grease here and there. The "economy" is the sum total of every one's personal decisions concerning finances.
You, me, the guy down the street, even the foreign tourist spending a couple of weeks and some money, add all that up, and you have the economy. Do you choose to buy grapefruit over oranges because they're cheaper? That's the economy. Decide you want to splurge on lobster? That's the economy. If some one decides to go to college for a bigger possible pay check? That's the economy.
There is nothing government can do to "fix" the economy, because its all us individuals doing our own thing. There are plenty of things government can do to "break" it, and I guess you could call pulling down barriers to our participation in the economy fixing it. But if government didn't errect the barriers in the first place, then they wouldn't need to be taken down.
Here's an example. Remember how Obama "saved" the auto industry by pumping billions into failing auto giants? What they did was take money from you and me, give it to their cronies in the unions to save their jobs, at our expense. We The People already decided their products were not worth the cost, and we proved it by not buying their products. Which is why they were in the mess to begin with.
Instead they should have been allowed to go into bankruptcy (which they did anyway), and rather than pissing more money down the drain hole, the government should have let us keep it and spend it on what we thought appropriate. That is a free market.

My 51 year old white father-in-law loves Beyonce too. But that doesn't really prove anything now does it. It doesn't make her smart or her actions correct. I was thinking something similar while watching an episode of Dr. Who. Now the writers were possibly making fun of the British people who are looking to Obama to fix the economy in their own country but if not it just illustrates how little people understand about our government and the world's economy.
In case those here missed it, there were numerous references to British people wanting to sit down and watch Obama give his speech on how he would fix the economy. These references included Brits making comments that implied they expected him to fix the economy so they could get rich as well.
Last time I checked our President did not have the power to magically fix the economy of our country much less Great Britain. He can make plans and proposals but others have to vote to implement them. Or maybe I just don't understand very well and these others are correct.

Then, should Americans never associate with Germany because of the Holocaust, Germany killed Americans in World I and II and that they were once enemies of the US. Please with the double standard if you're not going to point out the current US stance on Libya instituted by Bush and also if you aren't going to talk about the American and European CEOs that do business with Libya. Have you ever written an article about that? Just wondering.
