The Lambert Files: Middle America Once Again Proves Its Inability to Be Hip
by Pam MeisterThe recent fracas at the American Music Awards is yet another reason why I am glad I don’t go in for the mutual admiration society gatherings known as awards shows.
American Idol runner up Adam Lambert, one of the performers during the live East Coast broadcast, shocked viewers with his “pelvic-thrust[ing] … four-minute, S&M-themed routine, taking time out from singing to grope a female dancer, kiss a male musician and, most shockingly, shove a male dancer’s face into his crotch, in an act that simulated fellatio.”

Nothing like watching a little simulated fellatio to round out an evening with the family. Pass the popcorn!
Sources from the AMA claimed that those dance moves had not been part of the rehearsal, and the West Coast version of the show was edited to delete the scene. Now there’s the real scandal: trying to protect children who might be watching. If it’s good enough for the likes of the celebs in the AMA audience, it should be good enough for your 10 year old.
ABC received approximately 1,500 calls the next day from people complaining about what Lambert billed as ” a sexy song about seduction and power and I was just doing the lyrics justice.” The hicks who complained are probably the same people who did not see the poetic beauty in a “man eating, cannibalistic lesbian cheerleader.” How positively provincial. However, the plebes won and ABC also took the step of canceling Lambert’s “Good Morning America” performance. I suppose what Perez Hilton calls “c*** shock” would be a bit too much before breakfast.
Of course, Lambert was shocked in his turn that Americans would be anything but thrilled to see him in a lip lock with another guy as well as a man’s face in his crotch – according to the NY Post article linked above, he’s been “keen” to “push the boundaries” and “titillate audiences” ever since he came out of the closet. And after his AMA performance, he announced on his Twitter account: “All hail freedom of expression and artistic integrity.” Not a word about good taste.
Isn’t it amazing? Artistic integrity used to be guarded by the likes of Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, and Renoir, who wanted to delight the viewer with a tasteful but individual interpretation of the world. Now all that’s important is being offensive in the name of “freedom of expression.” We’ve certainly come a long way from Elvis’s hidden pelvic thrust on the Ed Sullivan show and parents complaining that the Fab Four’s hair was too long.
Lambert is whining that he didn’t “intend” to create controversy (BS Alert!), and it was somehow discriminatory to edit his performance when the likes of Madonna and other racy performances by women aren’t. I guess he wasn’t paying attention when NBC aired an edited version of Madonna’s concert in 2006. And how about the uproar after Janet Jackson’s so-called “wardrobe malfunction” while performing with Justin Timberlake during the Superbowl in 2004? (Side note: what IS the deal with Justin Timberlake? I can’t understand his appeal. He can’t sing and he reminds me of Screech on “Saved by the Bell.” Could someone please enlighten me?) Then there were the steamy kisses between Madonna and Britney Spears and Madonna and Christina Aguilera that had plenty of tongues wagging (and not just the ones onstage). Seems to me women catch plenty of flak when they flaunt their disdain for social mores on television.

Besides, just think of the ratings.
But since Lambert is openly gay, we may not criticize or fret for fear of being labeled homophobes. We must rejoice with him in his newly public persona and embrace any outlandish behavior in which he engages onstage – or off – because he is expressing himself in the name of Art. What do we ordinary mortals understand about Art except what we are told by those who create it? They create not for us, but for themselves. We’re just lucky enough for the chance to stand by and respectfully admire.
And it’s important that Lambert shed the goody goody image portrayed on Idol, just as Britney Spears shed her Mickey Mouse Club, schoolgirl persona and Lindsay Lohan shed – well, just about any shred of dignity she ever had. Onstage and off, sex and smut are the currency du jour in the entertainment world, even if the public isn’t buying.
So quitcher bitchin’ and enjoy Lambert’s time in the sun while you can. If you think it’s creepy seeing a man’s face in his crotch now, imagine the same scene when Lambert’s in his 60s.

I just no longer have any interest in award shows, pretty much for the same reasons you indicate.
I am wondering how many of these "entertainers" will end up in the asylum when they don't have their looks, their tight bodies or their hair anymore. Whatever happened to true entertainment? You know, making your audience laugh and feel good? Instead of shocking them? At my age, there isn't much to be shocked about, but there is plenty to be disgusted by. Part of me feels pity for these people that they choose this route to get their names in the spotlight instead if just good ol' hard work and talent. I used to think that Janet Jackson had more talent in her little finger than Britney Spears. I liked the way she danced and she sings great. But, when the "wardrobe malfunction" happened, I realized she's just as shallow as any of them. Sad, really.

Let us all give supreme thanks that he didn't break out his gerbil collection. In the name of Higher Art… of course.
I find it hard to believe the racier elements of the performance were added at the last minute – these routines are so choreographed, there's no way they can do that without throwing off everyone else. But ABC rushed to cover thier butts by editing the west coast version.
Funny, I thought the west coast was more receptive of this kind of let it all hang out stuff.
Lambert will suffer the consequences of his arrogance. He is an overwrought and unseemly character that makes me feel ill at this very moment. Maybe he becomes the poster child for Gay activism? I hope so.
Good Lord I am so sick of these self-indulgent little narcissists acting out. Bring back the studio system so these little meat puppets can be reigned in for the good of all (including those in Hollywood who want to continue to have an industry)
What a nasty little creature this Lambert is. We are showing societal cracks that harkens the demise of a civilization, Sodom & Gomorrah, Rome, Lois’s France, and now the USA. The good news this little creep in his decadent expositionism got a public backhand. Nobody gives a hoot-n-hell which way that kid swings, but how he sings, so STFU, and sing.
I don't watch award shows, especially musical award shows because, at their best, they're usually crap that awards other crap. I don't know why Lambert and others like him want to reinforce all the worst stereotypes we have of the gay lifestyle but it doesn't matter. His "music" is a lame rip-off of Freddie Mercury and his fifteen minutes will be up soon.
Besides being nothing more than mutual admiration societies and self-ego bolstering events for the in-crowd, watching awards shows are like seeing dogs eating each others' bodily wastes. Sickening to watch and not healthy for the dogs either.
When I was younger I used to watch the Ocsar Academy Awards because I liked to see what movies had been made. This was back in the day when movies were still good. Only sometimes was there an outlandish actor spouting their politics or doing something silly. In the mid-90s all that changed and movies were no longer worth watching. The Oscar Academy Awards became one political statement after another by hacks that infest the industry at this time.
Here is an idea. If you want to show this type of expression, fine. Let us know what the show may possibly show, then give us the option of watching it or not. You can express yourself anyway you want, but I do not have to watch it, which, like self-expression, is a right as a citizen. Just let me know what type of content might be on the show.
The author has made an interesting choice in picking Michaelangelo (sic) as poster-boy for tasteful artistic expression, considering that some of his works were considered highly obscene in his day.
I wish the gay community would make up its mind already. Do they want to be hip, decadent and edgy or loved by boring, prudish middle America? One tends to cancel out the other.
They are not artists. These people, left to their own devices, are so shallow and insipid as to defy belief. They are completely creations of corporate creativity; simply the lowest form of myth allowed. The entire 20th century was about the democratization of art (yes, among many other devolutions) so that any nincompoop picked off the street could be "made". We are there. Lambert lost, by the way, why oh why does he have the full power of the machine behind him? He looks and performs like Judy Garland, only Garland had 30 years of drug and alcohol addiction to blame. He is wretched. What he is about is money, and influence…the kind of influence that will destroy your children's (and your's) ability to ever appreciate anything other than monkey ardor.
There is no excuse for such blatant BS. The author has it exactly right. Thanks for the great write-up.
(I happen to be a straight white guy who catches a lot of flak for supporting certain gay causes.)
Ms. Meister wrote: "Nothing like watching a little simulated fellatio to round out an evening with the family. Pass the popcorn!"
That's great stuff! Sarcastic and funny as hell.
@Tempus,
Good point. The practice of "gay activities" is by definition decadent.
Ain't it strange that all these self-proclaimed "artistes" who want to "push the boundries" seem to think that we are somehow required to watch it, and even enjoy it!?!? If we don't, then we're "prudes", "Bible-thumpers", "homophobes", etc., etc., etc.
Well, if that's the case, I have a Gideon New Testament handy that I can start thumping!
I thought the show was great. However, he should have listened to people who tried to tell him the Nokia Theatre would make people who didn't lip-synch sound like crap. Hence Janet, Whitney, Green Day nor a few others sounded their best. But Adam does have talent. To bad you're bigotry blinds you to that.
I'm interested to know why you haven't complained about any other star's performances such as Janet grabbing her male dancer's crotch. Oh, I know why. Because it was hetero.
Homophobe is the right word for you. I am puzzled why so many Californian articles are so scathing, after all it is the entertainment capital of the world. Now I'm starting to wonder if it is the homophobe capital of the world too.
Adam is just starting out on his career and, unfortunately, will be making a few mistakes. However, I believe in him. He's had to endure people with narrow minds and so much self -righteousness that they feel they can put him down and call him names when they don't even know him. Open your hearts to someone who is making the path easier and the world more tolerant for one of your relatives when they have a "secret". Where they too can hold their heads up with pride and know they will be accepted. Let AdaM have his first mistake and move on. He is already being written in the history books and will be remembered for a very long time. I'm a 62 yr old grandmother who thinks this is a man who is making a change in the world for the better. How many people can say that? If you don't like him, turn him off in your world but don't take him away from the rest of us who can see how very important he is to the future.
Another nail in the coffin of the "Mainstream Entertainment" industry.
Does Hollywood ever wonder why broadcast television (and now cable as well) is being abandoned by people in favor of the internet? If broadcasters won't exercise some discretion we will do it for ourselves.
We get it guys: gay is okay. Now get up off the front lawn and take it indoors already!
As someone who never watched Idol, I have to ask. What's a Lambert?
There is a large subset of the entertainment world out there that subscribes to the idea that any publicity is good publicity, and if you show no shame whatsoever and are willing to do anything that can be considered 'shocking' in order to grab the media's attention, you can maintain your fame for years and years without producing anything of artistic merit.
Lambert's not there yet, since he hasn't shown a pattern of in-your-face (or in this case, in-your-crotch) behavior yet, but it's up to him and his handlers as to which direction he goes. If he's unable to turn out any sort of music in the future that people want to hear for the music itself, he can still maintain relevance by making "outrageousness" a big part of his act. Twenty years from no he'll have no legacy of songs anyone cares about, and a reputation that will be the gay male singer version of the circus geek who used to bite the heads off chickens, but he can make some money off of that gig. It's his call.
I don't believe it either. The Timberlake/Jackson 'wardrobe malfunction' was a *complete surprise* to the powers-that-be as well. Even though that move was obviously choreographed to the music. I find it hard to believe that the producers are really the innocent, wide-eyed, Precious Moments figurines they claim to be at these times.
Do you recognize a difference between homophobia and homorevulsion?
My God, how awfully sad. 62 years old and a grandmother to boot— and just as dumb as bubble bath.
Do you mean this Janet Jackson classy moment back in September 2008?
http://www.theinsider.com/news/1202272_Janet_Jack...
I couldn't complain about on Big Hollywood it because Big Hollywood didn't exist back then. But for the record, I think it's rude and crude no matter who does it. And another point is that it didn't happen on an awards show broadcast during prime time on a national (non-cable) network, where anyone – including young children – could be watching. See? I was right. By criticizing the incident, I am automatically branded a homophobe. Ah well. Seems some folks will never be happy until there are no boundaries anywhere and we all just do as we please…
Some of the comments are crossing the line to gay-bashing, but I don't think Pam has.
I listened to some of Lamberts album samples last night and, I'm sorry, what happened to his great voice? It sounds absolutely awful. With the album sounding alternately screechy and nasally, I'm wondering if the awful sound in the awards show is really the Nokia Theater's fault.
His album doesn't at all present the ability he showed on AI. He obviously needs guidance by someone who knows how to help him pick songs and present his talent in it's best light. This entire debacle — starting with the poorly produced, performed album and running through to the AMA performance — is NOT it.
What's homophobic in the article. Not the comments, Marilyn, but the article? It's about good taste and the accusation that someone who criticizes anything overtly gay is a homophobe. Hmmm. Did Pam pay you to illustrate her point?
I find it hard to believe that someone at the AMA didn't have a big hint this was coming from that raunchy little reptile.
I'm so sick of these people and the media that gives them a platform. I'm even more more disgusted at the tens of thousands that rushed to buy his album:
"Released on Monday through Sony Music Entertainment, "For Your Entertainment" was No. 3 on the iTunes U.S. album chart by Wednesday night. Music industry sources told Billboard magazine it is outperforming expectations and could sell about 225,000 units in its first week."

A sad commentary on the times we live in.
In the days where a girl (Kim Khardasian) , whose greatest fame comes from her pornographic sex video, gets a cable TV deal and shows up on Dancing with the Stars. Ms. Lambert got what he wanted, publicity.
When your sexual preference is so tightly wrapped up in your identity, then you have serious problems. I think most of America is tired of making concessions for homosexuals. It's too bad the guy has to rely on tons of base make-up, pointy shoes and gay bar antics to entrtain the youth of America. The guy is talented but the pathos and drama of "alternative lifestyles" makes the eyes roll and is kinda sophomoric …not to mention already been done. What else do you have to offer, Mr. Lambert?
After being told how awful this performance was, I decided to watch it myself. Was it crude? Yes. Was it the end-of-the-world-God-is-going-to-rain-helfire-on-us performance a lot of folks are calling it? Not even remotely.
But putting all that aside, If parents are stupid enough (yes, I said STUPID) to let their children watch this crap, it's their fault. Children are the ones who are fueling the garbage entertainment today, and it's because too many parents are either clueless about what the kids are watching or listening to, or they just don't care.
To whine and moan endlessly about the children being exposed to this is just ridiculous. It all comes down to the parents taking responsibility. I don't want the government or a politicized studio system telling me what I can and cannot watch. I alone want to make the decision. I'm a big boy, and I'm more than capable of doing that for myself and for my children.
These topics always bring out the closet nanny-statists. You can always spot them by how many times they insert the phrase "young children" into their argument.
It's a odious toxic Fruit. Stay clear of it. Your not missing anything.
"Reined" in. Learn some basic third grade English, for crissake. For instance, the concept of a homonym, a word which sounds the same but means something entirely different, making you look like a drooling mouth breather.
It's interesting that you made the mistake of "you're bigotry" where you should have used "your bigotry". I've never seen that before, but it's common (I've done it myself) to use 'Your so gay' where you should have used 'You're so gay'.
"So quitcher bitchin’ and enjoy Lambert’s time in the sun while you can. If you think it’s creepy seeing a man’s face in his crotch now, imagine the same scene when Lambert’s in his 60s."
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Some things you cannot unsee!!!
I'm psuedo-phony-commercial-musicial-possuer-phobic. The guy sucks. Literally.
Exactly. Lambert got his 15 minutes extended with this little stunt. And now everyone looking for publicity will be trying something outrageous when the next "America's Music People's MTV Choice Awards" show comes along.
Another great example of how insulated the left-wing media is from mainstream america. In their cocoon of LA/San Fran/NY and now DC, they think this guy's behavior is normative. They think normal people like Carrie Prejean and Sarah Pallin are figures to hate and fear.
We need anti-trust legislation to break up these big media conglomerates and their cross-lateral deal making. A free market in the movie/TV/music industry would solve this issue. I'm tired of an elite trying to impose it's ideals on me.
Lamber's antics on a publicly, uncensored broadcast show notwithstanding – who on the earth are the morons who watch these shows anyway? Or fret about where Michael Jackson's nose is buried?
Great article.
I thought I was watching a Heart reunion at first, with Ann and Nancy sharing a sisterly kiss. I could not understand the big deal, then I realized it was Adam Lambert. Mark my words Lambert is about 5 years away from fuzzy Ann Wilson shots.
I just don't get why he felt he had to do such a thing. It was just creepy. It was not even sexy. It's just a shame when young reasonably attractive people can make sex unsexy and just yucky looking. I mean, who would even want to watch two boys with too much makeup on kiss? Not even the gays want that.
Now, when Trace Atkins plants a big one on Brad Paisley, that's worth watching!
I guess we should be thankful Perez Hilton didn't jump on stage and join in with her thick self.
Ick.
Now that might have actually been entertaining.
Wow! This was very cruel, yet well deserved! Now everybody from Palisades to Downey, from Chatsworth to Seal Beach will start cringing – oh, oh, I live in a homophobic place, this is so unbearable, I'm so ashamed, I'm so devastated, what do people from Puenta Arenas to Tallin, from Osaka to Wellington, from Vladivostok to Liverpool think now about Los Angeles? "Oh, they are so homophobic!" – truly devastating, Gretchen, I simply can't have my waffles, I live in a homophobic place!
No one can impose ideals on you. You're in charge of what you do and do not watch. In my experience, if folks pay to buy crap, someone will keep trying to sell you crap.
I've come up with a radical solution to this problem. It involves changing the channel and not buying entertainment that I don't like. I realize it's easier to jump straight to the "let's get the government involved" solution, but I prefer to make decisions for myself.
True, some of his work was considered obscene for his time, but Michaelangelo was also on the cutting edge of art. Rather that simply draw and/or paint how he thought the human body should be, he spent many years studying the physical body, detailing how it actually looked in motion.
Gruesome as it sounds, he used to purchase dead bodies (illegally) and dissect them to see the muscles under the skin, what they looked like and how they moved.
That's why his work was so realistic, and so influential on society and the art world.
Circular reasoning. If you were smart enough to appreciate art you'd see it in his performance. Since you don't appreciate it, it's proof you are incapable of appreciating art.
It's the same argument global warmongers use. The reason you can't see they're right is because you're too dumb to see how smart they are.
Good point. Although it would be nice if people were allowed to have expectations of those providing entertainment. There's no need for statism, just some personal responsibility and respect for others.
Frankly, talent shouldn't need all those gew gaws to be interesting.
This clown and his ilk are living violations of the laws of nature. Fortunately for them, no one enforces those laws, for now.
Apparently you were not paying attention, no one liked those other crude moments either.
LOL. Yes, an over-the-top, ill advised AMA performance should be seen as the equivalent of Michaelangelo.
By all means, let's not criticize Adam Lambert. He might be the next … *snort* … M – Mi – … *guffaw* … Michaelangelo! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Now who's taking things too seriously. Not me! ROFLMAO
ADAM LAMBERT BASHERS please listen to this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJYyqzUr6jU&fe...
This article is not accurate — teh Associated Press reported that the "face in the crotch" Choreo was in both the partial dress rehearsal and the dress rehearsal. So this 1-1/2 seconds of the performance that were editted by ABC-TV in the rebroadcast wass not a last minute ad lib. The kiss was a last minute addition — although was aired on the West Coast rebroadcast.
I didnt say "impose", I said "trying to impose". Not the same, obviously.
And your radical solution would work, if there was a free market. But when their exists a hegemoneous control of the media because of a non-competitive monopoly, then changing the channel leads you to the product within the paradigms of the people in charge of the monopoly.
The government is already involved in media. It's called the FCC. I'm not asking for more involvement, I'm asking for the recognition that their is no reason to allow media to be controlled by a monopoly. Anti-trust legislation is the opposite of government involvement, and it used to be a mainstay of republican belief.
Miss Prejean's tape was released by people out to damage her reputation, not as entertainment for public consumption. Are you blind to that simply reality?

My thought exactly. Where is the wisdom that is supposed to come with age?
The AMA "Jumped the Shark" with this.
Shouldn't there be some kind of expectation when a program is turned on? If I turn on CSI I have an expectation of bullet-riddled bodies. If I turn on Family Guy I have an expectation of crude, crass, toilet humor. In both cases, those expectations allow me, as a parent, to decide if I want my children to watch or not. But an entertainment-awards show is something else. My expectation would be entertainment, thus the award. But to show something like this without expectation and then to hold the parents responsible for their children seeing it is not logical.
"Bring back the studio system so these little meat puppets can be reigned in for the good of all"
Almost everything ever attempted "for the good of all" has lad either to failure or tragedy, because basic mathematics dictates that listening to the majority generally means listening to the lowest common denominator.
"If broadcasters won't exercise some discretion we will do it for ourselves."
I like how, in effect, doing what anti-censorship advocates have been ASKING THEIR OPPONENTS TO DO ALL ALONG – i.e. if you don't like it just don't watch it – is here being framed as some kind of righteous rebellious action. "That's it, Mom! If you don't stop putting all this broccoli on my plate, I'm gonna EAT IT ALL! What'll you say to THAT!?"
Lambert? Who?
I liked Adam Lambert on Idol. I thought he was a great showman and usually gave a wonderful performance; his talent was enjoyable. I voted for him without consideration for his sexual lifestyle because I didn't care what his sexual lifestyle was. I wish those who want others to stay out of their bedrooms and let them live their lives the way they want would shut the door of their bedrooms because I don't want to see. That goes for any sexual lifestyle. Please.
Not with what they do with them – even PETA would be up in arms.
If we could all just do as we please then you'd be able to criticize an outrageous performance without being called a homophobe. So I don't think that's quite the goal.
None of it is my cup of tea EdSki. I'm weary of these garish unremarkable non-entities falling over themselves trying so hard to be so different and edgy and of course dangerous. While in reality they're all morphing into the same lump of tawdry ridiculous crap and I'm being kind with that.
There's no actual monopoly, though. That most folks in a given art/entertainment industry share similar worldviews and/or standards is not the same thing as them all getting together and linking-up to force out competition.
There is plenty of airspace, distribution channels and MONEY out there for "social conservatives" to make and produce their own movies and TV shows to compete with Hollywood; and so far almost every time such a thing has been tried it's failed to get a foothold. It may be high time for "social-cons" to realize that they just aren't a functional majority of anything anymore, and adjust their expectations accordingly. Or go found their own country and move there, either one would work for me…
Don't think for a minute that everyone who didn't appreciate Lambert's performance falls in line with your kind of thinking. In fact … you come off like a Moby. Is that a threat at the end of your post?
Have you seen what PETA actually does with animals?

What to expect from an awards show is evident from the nominees, the knowledge of which is available to the viewers.
Lame attempt at sarcasm. Perhaps I'm still ODing on turkey.
You know, we got the gist of it Miss Marple. Commenting on these boards is like basic journalism, which is, after all, literature in a hurry. Busting on somebody for spelling or grammar is bad form here – we usually let the smaller things slide. You could have been a little more genteel and mentioned that the person's use of incorrect language reflects on that person's lack of education or intelligence, but to say someone looks like a drooling mouth breather is borderline trollisim.
I can appreciate art. I enjoy Charles Russell and Frederick Remington paintings that celebrate our "Wild West" heritage. I enjoy David Mann's paintings that celebrate the "Rebel Biker" lifestyle. As far as music, I listen to Country Music, '80's and '90's rock, and Contemparary Christian music.
But, I can't appreciate the "art" of shoving guys faces into his groin or putting a lip-lock on one of his band members.
The best part of this nonsense is that all that wannabe-Bowie tomfoolery onstage isn't REALLY Lambert's gimmick – this article is.
Nobody in the business of buzzmaking gives a damn about the just-one-hair-shy-of-vanilla watered-down "kink" act he's working in this bit; but having the usual predictable busybodies bust a vein over it and attack the network for airing it and/or grumble out the old "I sooooo don't HATE them, just keep it in the bedroom, geez!!" crap? That's the goal, that's money in the bank. Thanks to predictably overblown "outrage," he's gone OVERNIGHT from a safe, Idol-ized corporate repackaging of the gay club scene to an "edgy" artist who's "too hot for TV."
Well done, Mrs. Meister et al
Haahahahahahahaaaa……I love it!!!!
If you appreciate western art, and ever find yourself in upstate New York, check out this place.
http://www.rockwellmuseum.org/
I've been there twice, once a dozen years or so ago, and it was fantastic. We went again a couple of years ago and the entire place had been redone. The building looks much better, but they've got less than half the exhibit space than they used to, so they can only show a fraction of the collection.
Today is the first time I listened to Lambert sing -now I understand why he resorted to VISUAL gimmicks.
If visuals are needed to bring out ” a sexy song about seduction and power" then you are not musically talented to "doing the lyrics justice.”
The guy may have a voice to hit notes however, gay or otherwise, he is completely void of passion and must hide this void behind visual gimmicks.
He is another bubble-gum pop-star marketed for the kiddies.
In what basic English dictionary will I find 'crissake'?
LoL. No no I got what you meant. Now Woodchucks would be interesting and frighting all at the same time. I think your right it's the Turkey. Gotta get off the net …Later.
Thanks EdSki! That does look interesting. I live in Oklahoma, and there's several museums here with Western art.
Obviously, you're a Pam-phobe.
This is what is considered entertainment? While I do not watch award shows or reality TV, I find this behavior puzzling. From Jamie Foxx to Kayne West to this guy Lambert to the balloon boy. Andy Warhol once said "In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." The part these people seem to miss is that he did not intend for us to think that it was a good thing.
I'll add, because bubble-gum pop-stars have zero of passion they always come out sounding high-pitched 'alvin and the chipmunks'; there is no depth to their voices.
I think that's where Rockwell used to live. He was the son of a family that owned a big department store, but he wanted no part of it, so he moved out west for several years. When his father passed away, there was no one else to take over so he had to move back. And to remind him of his love for the west he built a huge art collection.
When he passed away he created and endowed the museum to maintain the collection.
ALLAMERICAN, "non-entities" is exactly how I have described today's crop of "stars" in conversation. They have no real talent to offer and so they resort to vulgar and clownish behavior to get noticed.
The guy was a cross dressing drag queen singer before American Idol. The legitimate Gay Community recognizes what he is and do disapprove.
But up to this point Adam Lambert had not simulated sex on stage (at least to my knowledge), so that was completely unexpected. If I watched the awards show, I would not have that expectation. Now that I know what to expect from him, I will not be watching nor listening to him at all.
StanH, I agree. We are witnessing the beginning of the end of our society. This vulgar and crass exhibitionism is becoming the norm and I fear the worst is yet to come.
Gerry N,
Learn some basic courtesy… if you don't disagree with the guy's comment and want to correct his spelling, grammar, or writing in general… simply say so without being insulting.
If you have an actual disagreement with his point, state it and be done with it.
Finally, go get your shinebox.
The singer Susan Boyle, now this is a voice with depth which does not visual gimmicks to sustain the talent.
Whether or not the music she sings fits any particular preference it is a voice which is sustain by a depth of passion rather than any ability to hit notes.
Her voice has such depth of passion she has no need to stick someone's face in her crotch in order to be heard.
Another case, Maria Callas; here is a voice whose warble was wide enough to drive a train through yet her depth of passion brought out the most extraordinary music without resorting to visual gimmicks. Likewise; Renata Tabaldi had an extraordinarily beautiful voice yet very few know who she was.
end-of-the-world-God-is-going-to-rain-hellfire-on-us performance a lot of folks are calling it?
Well, YOU are the first person I heard that from.
And you can spot closet nanny-statists by how many times they insert the phrase "young children" into their argument? My, you are a Drama Queen.
Now I'm going to have nightmares! But they just kill them, they don't torture them by using them as sex toys.
"Don't take him [Lambert] away from the rest of us…"
How is criticising the man's act taking anything away from you all? What's more, how is Lambert's crotch-thrust into the face of another man on live television critical to your future?
How would a crotch-thrust into anyone's face on television be critical to anyone's future?
Wow. Next you'll be posting your "Leave Adam alone" youtube video.
Phobia denotes fear. I don't fear homosexuals. I dislike the more militant ones, and am disgusted by their overt, in-your-face (or is it "in each others' crotches?) acts. Gay pride is one thing – what some of them do in their parades is repulsive.
He can’t sing and he reminds me of Screech on “Saved by the Bell.” Could someone please enlighten me?)
What IS the deal with you? I can't understand YOUR APPEAL and I'm not complaining about you! I think you look more like Screech than Justin does. LOL You're one to talk about celebs when you suck as a writer and suck at life, in general! Did Justin reject an interview with you or ignore you in the past? Why the hate? If you don't like him, don't talk about him, don't think about him, and don't listen to him music! JUST STFU!
Isn't that some sort of parasitic worm that lives in lakes and preys on fish?
No, wait, that's a "lamprey".
Then, I'm not sure.
File that in the "I don't know what you're talking about, and I DON'T WANNA know" file. Please. Don't give these guys any ideas.
You and many others.
It was a serious miscalculation on Lambert's part.
