The more I learn about Julia Child the more I like her. Meryl Streep, not so much.

Here's an excerpt of my review for Julie and Julia from my website which reviews movies for film-loving foodies:
<a href="http://differentdrummer.cc/reviews/review.php?reviewID=296" target="_blank">http://differentdrummer.cc/reviews/review.php?rev...</a>

And did you know she was a spy? At a commanding six feet two, Julia was too tall for the service, but wanting to do her part in World War II, she joined the OSS, the Office of Strategic Services, precursor to the CIA, established by FDR. There she meant Paul Child, a worldly ten years her senior, who she says in the film “almost won the war singlehandedly.” The film states she was only a clerk of sorts, but others differ. A year ago classified material was released that revealed her wartime efforts for the OSS, and this entry by Andrew Schneider coyly titled "Secret Ingredients" is tantalizing. Schneider called her “flamboyance and grace in a tall package,” and details the telling wink she gave him when she denied any substantive role in espionage.

What offended me about the movie was the opening: this frustrated writer worked at the company that is supposedly in charge of rebuilding the WTC and she was all ticked off that people, survivors, were calling her and sounding off or telling their sad stories! Geez!! I just could not get past seeing a crane shot of THE PIT and then listen to this bureaucrat whine for 2 hours about her life. The knocks on Republicans throughout the movie I'm used to, and the focus on The Black List, but now 9/11 is subject for their derision?

Sickening.

This is the most disgusting display of character assassination I have ever come across and I am not pointing the finger at Meryl Streep. Do any of you really think this woman woke up one day and thought "my life isn't exciting enough, I think I'll take on the pesticide industry". Forget for one minute that this woman is an actress and consider her criteria for protesting
a) she's a tax-paying, voting citizen of America
b) She's a mother
c) She's a consumer
I believe that Streep had genuine conviction that the pesticide Alar was detrimental to the health of children, hers and everybody elses and that she acted on good faith. And furthermore, was she a one-woman show? Hardly, there was quite a lot of concern expressed about the use of Alar since 1986. Streep was simply the easiest target because of her profile. I'm not American, I'm Australian and we quite like it when our actors get behind the community in protesting about health and environmental dangers. Its not unusual to spot Cate Blanchet on a protest march. She's an Australian citizen, she has as much right to voice an opinion as everyone else. How would a lawyer or doctor feel if they were told that their profession bans them from protesting - why should actors be discriminated against? And as for her off-the-cuff remark about Julia Child - God forbid! Is this woman God? Did Meryl confess to adultery or for having an abortion in order to take on a film role? If Julia Child was allowed - back in the 1980's to express to Dr Whelan (not that we'll ever be able to test the truth of that because Child is dead) that she was "furious" about Streep's activism, why shouldn't Streep be allowed to express her disappointment (in an informal interview) that Child didn't want to be part of her charity. I didn't see this particular interview but I've heard heaps of praise about Child coming from Streep (which seems to be completely overlooked here). And sorry Americans, I'm deeply grateful to your country for containing the city of New York and for producing citizens such as Streep, but I'm totally ignorant of the existence of Julia Child - as will most people who are not American or in the food industry. But I'm sure that the world will be enriched by discovering this woman once the movie is internationally released and that will be to the credit of one of your most valuable ambassadors - not Dr Whelan (who obviously still has an axe to grind and has been waiting for her opportunity) but a formidable, gracious, intelligent and humane woman. Face it, if you vicious baggers have to dig back 20 years to find something to discredit this lady, its proof that she's lived an exemplary life.

Indeed, hermits can have dogs (see Road Warrior), just dont get a multitude of cats. A woman living alone with lots of cats is not known as a hermit. She becomes the "crazy cat lady".
