Kids to Meet Marx in School – Care of Hollywood and The History Channel

This innocence is beautiful, but it is a quality that can easily fall victim to radically foreign ideas if taught consistently and pervasively at an early age. One need only look at the birth of fascism or socialism to see a recipe for how radical ideas become ubiquitous among a nation’s youth.
Enter Howard Zinn – an author, professor and American historian – who, with the help of Hollywood and the History Channel, intends to change the way our pre-K through high school children learn American history. His current curriculum suggestions, like introducing three-year-olds to the lynching of African-Americans, or quizzing seven-year-olds on which Presidents owned slaves, should be a red flag to parents.

Zinn has spent a lifetime teaching college students about the evils of capitalism, the promise of Marxism, and his version of American history – a history that has, in his view, been kept from students. His controversial 1980-book The People’s History of the United States paints traditional American history as a façade – one that has grotesquely immortalized flawed leaders and is based on principles that victimize the common man. In 2004, Zinn wrote a companion book entitled Voices Of A People’s History Of The United States, which includes speeches and writings from many of the people featured in The People’s History.
These two books have now become the basis for a new documentary, entitled The People Speak, to be aired December 13th at 8pm on the History Channel. The trailer portrays the documentary as a collage of compelling one-person readings, told through the words of “ordinary” people who have struggled throughout American history against oppression. Produced by Zinn, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Chris Moore, the documentary appears to be cloaked, ironically (given Zinn’s admitted socialist agenda), in many of the traditional ideas that were behind our founding. The verdict is still out on the doc, but it is not for the books that inspired the film as well as the educational initiative associated with it.
Perhaps due to their one-sided perspective of America’s past, Zinn’s history books have largely been limited to colleges and universities, until now. In the press release announcing the broadcast, HISTORY introduced a partnership with VOICES Of A People’s History Of The United States, a nonprofit led by Zinn that bares the same name as his companion book, to help get his special brand of history into classrooms.
Delving into Zinn’s nonprofit is where this story gets interesting, and the organization’s grade school educational ambitions concerning.
VOICES’ function is to provide live performances of readings from the book Voices of a People’s History as well as educational materials to schoolteachers. The nonprofit’s site provides teachers with resources, including a teaching guide that explains how to get students excited about Zinn’s history books. Their educational materials also includes the Zinn Education Project, a resource for teaching Zinn’s perspective of American history to – drum roll please – pre-Kindergarten through high school students! Included in the curriculum for pre-K students (that’s three and four year-olds) is “Rethinking Columbus,” which counters “the myth of Columbus.” In Zinn’s view, our pre-K children “need to hear from those whose lands and rights were taken away by those who ‘discovered’ them.”
Another teaching lesson for our three-year-old students is “One Country! One Language! One Flag!” that includes teaching ideas for “examining the history of the Pledge of Allegiance and the political milieu in which it was written.” The teaching plan suggests introducing our pre-K-ers to the lynching of African-Americans in the 1880s, and introducing the history of violence and discrimination against minority groups. It also proposes a discussion on an old “One Language!” chant allegedly used in classrooms up until 1942, and poses teachers with the question, “Why not lead kids in the original Pledge to the Flag, including the ‘One Language!’ chant and the Nazi-like salute, and then lead a discussion about the politics of the Pledge?”
This discussion is proposed for kids age three to seven?
Zinn also includes a youngster version of his influential book entitled A Young People’s History of the United States as an introduction to his untold American History. The publisher of the book highlights a review by the magazine Socialist Review, who proclaimed “Howard Zinn has adapted his People’s History of the United States for younger readers, but in no way do these books pull their punches. Zinn feels the younger reader is entitled to look at US history honestly.”
The background of the board of directors and advisers of VOICES’ can only be described as jaw dropping and begins to show a clear motive behind teaching this predominantly anti-American history at such a young age.
Made up of several notables including Zinn, Kerry Washington, and Marisa Tomei, all of whom make appearances in the documentary, the VOICES board also includes radicals who play a role in our public schools. Brian Jones, a New York teacher and actor, is a board member of VOICES and has also played the lead in Zinn’s play Marx in SoHo. You can see Jones speaking about Zinn and the play below, recorded for a performance in Greece, where he extols the benefits of this one man play as a tool to introduce people to Marx’s ideas:
Jones is also a regular contributor to Socialist Worker, International Socialist Review, and speaks regularly on the beneficial principles of Marxism, including this year at the 2009 Socialism Conference. He recently gave a speech on the failure of capitalism, proclaiming that “Marx is back.”
Sarah Knopp, a Los Angeles high school teacher, is also on Zinn’s Teacher Advisory Board. Like Jones, Knopp is also a regular contributor to International Socialist Review, Socialist Worker, is an active member in The International Socialist Organization, and was also a speaker at the 2009 Socialist Conference. Is it becoming clearer why this group might want to teach children to think poorly of the American system?
Then there is Jesse Sharkey, a schoolteacher in Chicago. Sharkey is another of Zinn’s Teacher Advisory Board Members and, completely uncharacteristic of this group, is a contributor to… Socialist Worker.
This is the group that the History Channel is working with “to develop enhanced, co-branded curriculums for a countrywide educational initiative.” If readers choose to watch The People Speak, which we at BigHollywood encourage, keep in mind the context of the documentary’s creator and the pre-K to high school curriculum that the History Channel and VOICES could possibly create given the makeup of the board members.
I am not advocating that we spare our kids the harsh truths of American history, but I am suggesting, given Zinn’s far-left political affiliation, this project is designed to breakdown our vulnerable children’s views of American principles so that they can be built back up in a socialist vision.
Zinn’s one-man play Marx in SoHo provides an example of his attempt to reestablish the socialist ideology. The play, created in 1999, places Marx in New York after bargaining with the authorities of the after-life for a chance to come back to earth to clear his name. At the end of the cold war, Zinn felt that Marxism was unfairly discredited through being anchored to the fall of the Soviet Union. Through the play, Zinn wanted “the audience to see Marx defending his ideas against attack.” Those associated with the play have described it as an attempt to reestablish Marx’s philosophic and economic outlook – a philosophy that views capitalism as corrosive to the human condition. It doesn’t take a great leap to surmise that instilling in children a pessimistic view of the American experience could make his ideas more palatable.
Zinn’s socialist philosophy has definitely made its way into the documentary, including a speech by prominent socialist Eugene Debs. In his speech, which is a prose to the ills of the capitalist system, he speaks to a court that convicted him of sedition:
“I am opposing a social order in which it is possible for one man, who does absolutely nothing…to amass a fortune of hundreds of millions of dollars while millions of men and women who work all the days of their lives secure barely enough for a wretched existence.”

It is not surprising to me that there are groups sympathetic to Marx’s ideas throughout our country. What is surprising is that the most powerful persuasion machine in the world (Hollywood) and the History Channel would provide Zinn such a prominent soapbox to stealthily build a case for a destructive ideology to our children, and as a result mainstream his ideas with the magic of cool music, graphics, and celebrity. Groups that push Marx’s philosophy are like a virtual organism that will not die off even when stung by the undeniable historical evidence showing human behavior makes such a system unsustainable. If we let this virtual organism into our grade schools, it will take decades for our kids to unlearn the ideology.
And if there are any doubts of the intentions of Howard Zinn’s movement, I provide a quote of his in closing. When a reporter asked Zinn, “In writing A People’s History, what were you calling for? A quiet revolution?” Zinn responded: “A quiet revolution is a good way of putting it. From the bottom up. Not a revolution in the classical sense of a seizure of power, but rather from people beginning to take power from within the institutions. In the workplace, the workers would take power to control the conditions of their lives. It would be a democratic socialism.”
It appears that Zinn’s ilk have started the institutional phase of their agenda.

I was in a bookstore and saw Zinn's book in a graphic novel format. He stated that the US was equally as bad as Stalinist Russia. These flippin' Communist are every bit as evil as the Nazi's and somehow thay get a pass. It is a complete mystery to me.
I knew the History Channel had a strong leftist bias when I caught a promo for their spanish channel celebrating Che Guevara as a great revolutionary, and showing Castro as a hero…Slowly but surely these murderers become more and more mainstream with the help of producers, actors, and graphic artists. We must be vigilant and counter this. Let's explain to our children that some things are not only anti-american but inherently evil. Marxism is a good example. Can you imagine! why doesn't the History channel do a documentary on the fascism of Woodrow Wilson and FDR? Or the eugenics movement in America led by progressives? People were forcibley sterilized because progressives didn't think they were genetically fit. And these same progressives (Hillary claims to be one) past laws outlawing inter-racial marriages. They saw black people as genetically inferior.
If abortion is ever made illegal, I'm sure republicans will be blamed for all the baby killings or the libs/progressives will act like abortion never happened.
I have no problem with kids being exposed to anything negative about our country, as long as there is plenty of information about context that provides the necessary tools for interpreting what their mushy brains are recording.
That's the horror of no longer requiring logic as a course of study.

You can't have an objective education. You have to take sides and declare where your values originate. If democracy, freedom, free markets are so great – why are they so great? Why do they best match the human condition? Why should people be free? You can't just declare that free societies are best without giving the source for that reason. If you leave that open others will fill it with quite different ideas and leave people without the intellectual integrity to resist.

No mystery to me. These people have to be stopped, before it's too late and every day that passes, these vermin infest every facet of society, and as such need to be eradicated. Don't doubt that that's what they have planed for anyone who stands in their way. History has a way of repeating itself.
Unfortunately if home schooling ever becomes a popular approach, then the federales will simply make it against the law– suggesting that children are being harmed. So it will never be a viable way for us to protect our children from this type of socialistic nonsense.

There's nothing like a good public viewing to shine the light of realities on these ideologies.
When these ideas are hidden away, they become edgy, cool, counter-culture. And nothing attracts young minds faster that that.
The people that support this kind of tripe are already way too far gone. Their children have already been brain washed. Don't waste time on them.
But this could be a very good teaching moment. If you think your kids are mature enough, sit down and watch it with them, point out every lie, and correct every mistake.
Thanks to some excellent global studies teachers at her school, she already has a solid foundation in the principles of freedom and personal liberty.
Here's the letter I sent to the school board of my high school about Zinn. Nothing happened, of course. But I did a lot of research to write this letter. (And my son is now a college Republican who despises Marxism with every fiber of his being. So there, you filthy evil Zinn.)
Dear School Board:
I object to one of the texts being used in the Peak-to-Peak U.S. History Course. This book is called “A People’s History of the United States,” by Howard Zinn. Howard Zinn has a PhD in History and is about eighty years old. He is also a self-described Marxist and radical who despises America. Let me quote him in his own words, after he took part in a Communist Party march in New York when he was a young man: “From that moment on I was no longer a liberal, a believer in the self-correcting character of American democracy. I was a radical, believing that something fundamental was wrong with this country. Something rotten at the root.”
Howard Zinn’s history book is, as he declared himself in the 1995 edition: “A biased account.” In the 2000 edition, he declares “there is no such thing as pure fact.” Read the book and do some research and you will find this out for yourself. Howard Zinn’s omissions and errors are too many to go into here, but here is one example. Zinn declares that George Washington was the richest man in America. That’s a simple fact. And it’s not true. Do we want to be teaching our high school kids incorrect information? His book is full of errors like this one. It’s hard to tell how many errors there are, because Zinn’s book contains not a single source citation – not one. He never tells us where he gets his historical sources. A little fact checking and we find out where – from the mind of Howard Zinn, not from history.
The lack of scholarly research alone should disqualify this inaccurate text from our school. Worse, though, is Zinn’s ideology, which attempts to present America as a greedy, evil country. Zinn presents this because – again, I’m quoting his own words – he is a “Marxist, socialist, anarchist, radical, anticapitalist.” Remember his words – “America is rotten at the root.” He is a great writer, though! His text flows, his words resonate, and if you don’t read carefully you might think this is a terrific antidote to the dry history texts that we all had to suffer through in school. But looks can be deceiving. This book is exactly that – deceptive, incorrect and unacceptable. Even if a teacher wanted to give an “alternate” view of history, shouldn’t we at least make sure that view of history is historically accurate?
We need to get rid of this book. I hope the school board can correct this mistake. I have two problems with this text: First, it is full of factual errors and contains no scholarly research to back up any of the claims. Second, the bias in the book is deliberately anti-American. Perhaps we can graduate dumb students, who think George Washington was the richest man in America, but should we graduate children who have been taught to despise America? I’d like to close with the following quote. This is from a 24-year-old man on a website that discusses the topics of the day. This is what he had to say:
“I almost welcome the next terrorist attack. I feel nothing for my fellow Americans and neither should anyone else. Screw this entire country and everyone that goes down when it finally and beautifully falls.”
Howard Zinn didn’t say that. But once you’ve read “A Peoples History of the United States”, you’ll know that he would applaud.

Zinn makes a point of mentioning how certain presidents in the early years of the republic were slave owners. Why does he not put things in to context? Washington, Jefferson, and others inherited this system from the past and instituted ways both intellectual and political that ensured slavery would not survive.
My husband and I have transitioned over the years from moderate to conservative in our political views. Our 2 older children went to public schools in the midwest. As adults now they are moderates who agree with us on some issues and disagree on others. We moved to Massachusetts as our youngest child was beginning middle school. The political environment in this state is definitely liberal and that is reflected in the public schools here. In her sophomore year, one of the textbooks for her social studies class was by Howard Zinn. This upset me, but I tried to expose her to other points of view. She became somewhat hardened in the "America is the villain" point of view, due to, I believe, what she was learning in school. She is now a college graduate in her mid-twenties, and although we have a very good relationship with her, we cannot discuss politics with her. I do feel that, more than most parents realize, political indoctrination of our children is going on in the schools, to the peril of our country.
The left is and always has been of this ilk. How about we have sharia laws and the women of Hollywood dress in Burkas? Hollywood would come crying to the good people of our country to protect them but they are the #1 target of Al Quaida. They need to be more on the defensive than on the offensive as the ONLY reason they are able to spew hate-America speak is because of the freedom loving people. It would not bother me one iota if Jones and his ilk were air lifted to any muslim country and tried to speak freely.

There was a massacre of young women at a school in Montreal 20 years ago. As horrible an event as it was, the left wishes to keep it alive as a political stick with which to beat all men with and to argue against all gun ownership since the killer used a long gun. Mark Steyn's article sums it up.

Sad, but it doesn't surprise me. The History Channel has long since abandoned any pretensions of integrity regarding its actual subject – history. Like a lot of other cable/satellite channels, History now pretty much throws any old piece of garbage out there in order to attract an audience and boost ratings. These days, you're more likely to see a show about UFOs, Nostradamus, biblical prophecy, or the Holy Grail than anything related to actual history. I have no doubt that the management knows that these subjects are NOT history, academic or otherwise. Unfortunately, in their quest for ratings they run the danger of legitimizing fringe subjects, to the detriment of its audience.
And let's not forget those "historical" reality shows, Pawn Stars, Gangland, and Ice Road Truckers. These have exactly *what* to do with history?

So their introducing Zinn is really part of their overall strategy, not to turn us into Marxists, but to get more people to watch the History Channel. There's been a Howard Zinn buzz around for quite some time. He's edgy, he's hip, especially among the key demographic: young white middle-class males. And Matt Damon swears by him. Zinn doesn't tell you anything about American history you didn't already know, but reading him does boost your pseudo-intellectual, punk/alternative/closet-anarchist street cred. Armed with Zinn's half-baked history, you can argue with your parents and your friends and appear to know things the "politically unaware" mainstream hoi polloi don't. It's exactly the same thing that attracts people to conspiracy theories. It flatters their egos.
It's simple: There's an audience of hip young smart-asses out there and History channel wants them. Zinn thinks he can turn them (and their little brothers) into communists. It's a perfect partnership.

For someone like me who does not have children yet I get to live this action vicariously through you Bonnie. If the parents don't fight then we'll never win out.
All very depressing. Say what you will about old-line totalitarian Marxists like Howard Zinn, they never give up. Looks like they are resurrecting the old "Communism is a great ideal but was corrupted by Stalin and the others" canard. I think it was P.J. O'Rourke who gave the definitive response to this – "Communisim in Russia was communism run by experts. They created the society they intended to create." The qualiity of history instruction in the U.S. is so bad that I can see where crap like "The People Speak" will get a wide and appreciative reception. After all the schools have embraced "An Inconvenient Truth" like it is holy writ handed down by God himself. The moral equivalence betwen the Soviet Union and the U.S. is particularly repugnant yet has quietly been allowed to become a staple of modern hard-line socialists.

Zinn has been debunked by scholars. They point to his lack of context and total misinterpretation of the meanings of historical events. Some think he's just stupid, while others seem to think he's twisting it for political reasons. The latter is obviously the truth, based on his own comments on the matter.
So, why bother introducing bad scholarship in schools in the first place? They may as well put Snoopy up against real history. It would at least be entertaining.

I think any locality where the school district is putting this kind of curriculum into action, should clean house completely. Every single local politician should find themselves out on their keister and the cycle should be repeated until some semblance of sanity returns.
I think a curriculum should be created around Mark Steyn's "America Alone". A few attractive people could be talking heads for the accompanying video project and it should be shown everywhere Zinn's disinformation campaign is championed.

No society that has existed thus far is a true example of Marx's ideals. Stalinist Russia was corrupted and the distribution of wealth was not equal all across the board. Comparing an improper usage of Marxist principles to that of the Nazi's is an egregious error.

It's been fairly apparent for years..yes, I said years..that the History, Science, Biography, etc. channels are tacking left. I believe they are all NBC affiliates..I contacted the History channel more than 7 years ago about their programming..commenting that they were guilty of leaving out 'facts'. They did reply.."we buy packaged programming and we don't view it before we air it". A 'child's' excuse..or a 'liar's'.

A very apt metaphor, as the would-be wards-of-the-state don't seem to realize that the handouts are coming from the people themselves, not some magical source. As they consume what they are fed, they do not realize that they diminish themselves, grow weaker, and eventually cease to be much of anything at all.
This is also a wake-up call to all voters when those unknown people are running to be part of your local school boards. How often do we actually know the politics of these folks when it comes time to vote?? Pay attention, because they're the ones standing at the gate to fight for or against stuff like this.
There are good books too numerous to list that provide factual, DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE information about presidential slave owners, etc. etc. within the broad context of historical reference. When I homeschooled my children, I did not shy away or "protect" my children from these books when I determined their maturity, reasoning and judgment were developed enough to not only ingest the information, but to formulate questions and evaluate the material within a broader framework. Pre-K is, obviously, not the developmentally appropriate time to teach this material. As any competent childhood development professional would inform us, Pre-K children are not cognitively or emotionally mature enough to digest this material. They simply ingest it. The agenda, it would seem, is not to "teach" history.
The "wards-of-the-state" know very well where its coming from. They just don't care. Get in, get rich, then get out before it all starts collapsing under it's won weight.

My wife and I are childless, but we have numerous nieces and nephews, and most of them have been, or are being home schooled. The home schooled kids are at least 3 grades ahead of their contemporaries in all facets of learning, particularly reading and math. I could go on and on about the pros and cons of home schooling versus public schools, but suffice it to say if you what your kid to really learn and become a critically thinking adult then keep them as far away from public schools as possible.
I agree with you. I just think that now, before this curriculum is implemented, is the time to publicly point out that scholars have debunked Zinn's scholarship. That they've dubbed it "bad history". Shame them before they try to put it in the schools rather than try to back track and correct the education after it's entrenched.

The first few Presidents were the men who framed the Constitution in such a way that the institution of slavery MUST have been destroyed. They inherited that evil institution from every other culture that has existed in the history of the world, they are the ones who killed it here in America. They present the 3/5ths compromise as though they were trying to make black men only 3/5ths a person… they don't mention that it was a compromise between letting the southern slave states count slaves towards political representation without letting them vote! That is the irony I've noticed in all this. The claims they make against America, its government, etc. in some of those vids — could easily be made from a CONSERVATIVE perspective — about, for example, the progressive fascist rule under Woodrow Wilson or FDR.

Religion had a lot more direct influence on politics in Marx's day. The Church was very much a part of the Establishment – not just some individual choice that people were free to exercise or not. He saw it as part of the complex of non-earned power and money that held the "working class" down. It reinforced the existing order by making the workers believe that prayer and worship, rather than revolution, would be effective in improving their situation. Also encouraged them to focus on rewards in the next life rather than making this life better. I think Marx saw God and organized religion as distractions from the real work of revolution. He was a lot of things, but he was not a Satanist.

Liberal/socialist academia have been incorporating leftist Marxist strategies in the classroom and the college curriculum since the early 70's when I was a college student. Back then I witnessed the slow, but steady ascent of liberal aggression whose sole purpose is to destroy contrary viewpoints. The only difference between American liberal academics and murderous Marxists like the Shiny Path, Castro and Che is that the professors rather have someone else do their dirty work so they can wear the cloak of self-righteousness. If I was sending a child to college nowadays, I'd make them pay their own way if they wanted to major in any of the so-called liberal arts.
I've seen similar results in those I know who HomeSchool. And the biggest objection I've heard to HomeSchooling is the same old insipid rhetoric; "But they are going to lack social skills!" Tyzik, it isn't that we are making students aware that presidents formally considered great owned slaves that's the issue; it's that that is becoming the focus, being taken intentionally out of context, and being made the central, if not only, personality trait of these men.

One of the many failures of the so called conservative Bush Administration was to address this issue on the idealogical imbalance of university professors. Universities, since they are or were academic institutions, should be more concerned with a diversity of ideas rather than surface level diversity. Some may claim that colleges have always been hot beds of radicalism. This is not true as the balance between republican and democratic professors in the 1970s was roughly equal. Now, for every conservative/moderate professor there are nine far left buffons. In 2012, the Right needs to push for an Academic Bill of Rights that would restore balance.
I find this to be deeply distrubing. And you exposed her to different perspectives. What about all the parents that pay no heed to education? If this indoctrination dumbing down of our younger and future generations continues, how will our once great nation survive? This "eye opening" expose reminds me of the moment I learned more about who Walter Cronkite was after years watching him passively, trustingly, on his "nightly news" grandpa-delivery. Cronkite, the Communist, who announced later in his life (it's on YouTube) that he was "proud to sit at the right hand of satan".

Never underestimate the power and influence of broadcast media. Especially to the youth. If I could take back those years of my childhood watching and being influenced by Cronkite, I would. Obviously, I can't speak with authority on your personal experiences, but it seems to me that your belief that America's imperfections are being disproportionately represented in school says more about you than it says about the system. Not an insult – I don't mean you, singularly. I mean every educator, parent, or citizen who feels like they've got a stake in this debate. As for the examples you provide, is it possible that you have disdain for the way your colleagues handle the material within the provided standards, rather than the standards themselves? I simply can't believe that any imaginative history teacher would feel as though his hands were tied, that he was being forced to make Jefferson's slaves his "central, if not only, personality trait." Or that innovations in technology and transportation couldn't rival massacres for face-time on the Power Point.

They simply adjust some numbers, that they say take clouds into account, and presto, they get the number they want.'

Schools should only teach the Good about America so children will love their country and be happy to support the government by following all laws, paying taxes, and fighting for their Nation.
Some of the good lessons my generation learned were about George Washington's honesty, For example, when he chopped down the cherry tree, he told his father because he could not tell a lie.
Also, lessons should be taught about our other Great Presidents like Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, etc. to engender patriotism and feelings of national pride into our children.
What some consider negative elements of American history (things like slavery or treatment of Indians) should be ignored so children do not develop negative feelings about our Homeland., That is the way to make America a Great Nation once more.
I don't like it but I have very little remorse for those naive enough to send their kids to public schools.

Our son went to public school through high school. He then started a dual degree program in engingeering between a small, moderate private college and Georgia Tech. We are so happy that he is now on the last leg of his engineering degree from Georgia Tech and he will get out of college relatively unscathed by the liberals. According to my son, there are not a lot of liberals teaching engineering courses so he is fortunate to have had a quality, relatively unbiased education and is still a flag waving conservative.

My son Brandon is 16 years old. You might remember that he's the one who asked Pres. Obama back in September at Wakefield, HS in Arlington, VA about his childhood and not having a father in his life.
My son knows full well what's going on in Americka without being told anything from me (since I live in another state) . He's not bought into the Socialism being fed to him by the shovel full, and realizes that history is being rewritten with every intention of destroying this country and all that it stands for. Actually, he quite enjoys challenging his teachers and watching them stumble over their answers because the vast majority of teachers can't pass their own exams. They are so ignorant of history, economics and constitutional law (which only matter when taken together) that they make it simple for a 15 year old to make them look like fools.
Of course, their answer to anything they don't know is "…your just a racist!" That's when you know you've won!

The reality of the situation is that many presidents DID own slave and black people were lynched. I was a product of the American public education system and can say for sure this was not taught in the classroom. The accepted curriculum crafts a false, lilly white impression of American history that gives children the intentionally distorted viewpoint that all other nations in the world are of lesser moral fiber and generally live lives of lesser value. While national identity is important, I think it's at least as important that it be a realistic national identity. Why DON'T we teach people what really happened in the war of 1812 or about the internment camps Japanese-Americans were forced to live in during WWII? I have never met anybody who was homeschooled and went unscathed. Yes, you'll be able to give your children a superior academic outlook. I can't argue with that. But none of my dozen or so homeschooled peers and friends can be described as "socially capable." They come out with a false sense of confidence and superiority and/or utter ineptitude to pick up on basic social cues, like "back up you're in my personal space" or "that behavior crosses the line."
Moreover, there is something invaluable in learning to understand the wonders and horrors of your fellow man that you can't recreate in your living room. You'll save them a lot of pain later if they learn the realities of life in school. When has "sheltered" ever been a positive adjective?
Finally, as for the morality argument, one of my closest friends was homeschooled. He is the most obscene, sex-addicted, insecure guys I know. He tries to have sex with every girl he meets, and he loves to shock people by saying disgusting things. Oh, and he's extraordinarily conservative. So there's more than meets the eye to homeschooling.
If you're terrified of your kids being exposed to different ideas, talk to them about those ideas. I never got drunk or screwed around because all topics were open in my family. There wasn't much of a pull toward them because they weren't a mystery.

Wonderful public schools. When I went to school they taught us that we were entering the new ice age. Now look at what they're teaching the kids – global warming. My son went to elementary school and I got a phone call to set up a conference call with the principal because my son was talking about lynching and they wanted to suspend him (3rd grade). So we all sat down (the principal, my husband, son and myself) and I asked my son where he heard the word. IT CAME OUT OF THE BOOK THEY WERE READING IN CLASS. End of the meeting. The schools/teachers talk about not labelling people and how we should all be PC, when that's all they do. I don't blame any parent for homeschooling. The school books are garbage, full of errors and misinformation. And they try to pigeonhole the children. And heaven help you if your child thinks outside the box.

I personally think your a little paranoid. The vast differences between the American History I was taught in Elementary and High School and that which I learned in College and readings since make me think a less sanitized version of History would be good for our youth. Education is not about instilling ideology and simplicity in our children it is about fostering the love of knowledge and ability to sort through complexities. Only through such real education can we have hopes that the next generation is able to succeed in endeavors we would not have thought possible.
While I think we should probably shield pre-K students from the violence of American history, lynching etc., I don't think it is helpful to shiled them from its hypocracy. Teaching students the Thomas Jefferson who wrote with great eloquence in the Declaration of Independence of "All men being created equal" was able to square that belief with the personal ensalvement of other men speaks to the complexity of men, especially great men. Recognizing the faults that our Nation has corrected in its history empowers students to look towards a future where are ideals are more powerfully enshrined, an effort to create a "more perfect union" in which to live.
On the other side if we ignore the faults in our history and teach children that our rights were established by the constitution and have yet to change significantly we remove the impetus for change upon which our nation was built.

Most history professors and PhD's have a "liberal" view of history, so no surprise. The argument advanced by Global Warming advocates is not dependent on CO2 being the number green house gas.
The point is that CO2 is a green house gas and that since around 1750 the levels of CO2 have risen at an alarming rate. At a rate that has not happened in the previous 10,000 years.
The increase of CO2 in the atmosphere naturally leads to an increase of water vapour in the atmosphere, and thus the green house effect increases, and the temperature of the earth rises. We can control CO2 emissions, and that is why the they form a central part of the debate.
I'm not sure of the consequences of global warming, but the fact that CO2 traps heat can't be argued against. Nor can the fact that we are producing incredibly high levels of CO2 every day. It stands to reason that we can't allow CO2 levels to reach dangerously high levels of concentration within or atmosphere. Are we now at a point where we are approaching a dangerous level ? It's hard to say , but isn't it prudent to begin to process of weaning the west of fossil fuels ?

The issue is not the proposition that we include negative attributes of American history; the issue is unleashing people with stated ideological agendas upon school children.
There is reading of facts and then there is interpretation of facts. Most of us believe that education is the former. People such as Mr. Zinn believe that it is the latter. There are thousands of U.S. books about U.S. History written without the express intention of inspiring "a quiet revolution". We call those things like "historical texts" or "objective". Books with a mission statement such as Mr. Zinn's are more accurately described as "commentary on selected observations in U.S. history", and if your idea of "challenging" children is the feed them opinion commentary and then call it "education", I ask what challenge do you present a child when you do all of opinion forming for him? Most of us would call that indoctrination.

The proof of legitimacy in the alarmism presented by this particular blog is empirical and it's not hard to find. Declining history scores on standardized tests across the board. I'm a recent college grad and I challenge you to go out and talk to any 20-something with any degree you fancy and see if they know what something like say….the Constitutional Convention was. Or the 3/5ths Compromise. Who Jefferson Davis was. What the Constitutional checks and balances of our government are. What the difference between a republic and a democracy is.

Home schooled kids do not properly socialize. They get to college and they either go crazy partying or tend to be loaners. School provides more than just an academic education it teaches us how to deal with our peers. The real world is not sheltered, our children should not be coddled. If your ideas are right then you should be able to make your arguments at home….
There are multiple issues that are all just lumped together and called climate change.
1) Is the earth warming? Quite possibly. Then again, maybe not. The earth's climate has been changing ever since cosmic dust started collecting in the orbit of the sun. There have been multiple ice ages in the past, and multiple warming periods.
2) If so, is there anything humans can do about it? Who knows? My opinion is probably not. Humans have no where near the power compared to nature. Several years ago when Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted, it released more energy in the atmosphere than all human action combined through out history. More than all bombs, all factories, all cars, all furnaces, all campfires, all matches, everything. Personally I think it rather vain of humans to believe we have that much power. We don't.
3) If it is changing and humans can do something about it, is that really wise? What if it is warming, and if we try to stop it, and we screw it up even worse? The earth's ecosystems are far too complicated to be understood by humans, at this point in human history.
4) Is it greenhouse gasses that is doing it? What about solar cycles (I don't care what Al Gore says about them, he's a politician, which by definition means he's a liar). Science is only beginning to understand them. Do you know what the single largest greenhouse gas on earth is? Water vapor – clouds.
5) Is the science settled? Do even get me started. The computer models currently in use are wildly inaccurate. They don't even take clouds into account, because clouds are too unpredictable to model. So this is one of many "variables" scientists tinker with. And when you tinker with variables, you get the output you want. If their computer models worked, then they could just pump in data from 1950, let them run, and they should come out reasonably in the neighborhood of today's measurable readings. They don't. Not even close.
6) The entire scenario is based upon a correlation, not a casual effect. A correlation is '90% of people who died in the last 10 years ate carrots, there fore carrots killed them.' A causal effect is 'People who drink have slower reaction time, and hand eye co-ordination. Slower reaction time and co-ordination have been the cause of many accidents. There for drinking and driving leads to greater chance of accident.'
The way the global warming people out it, C02 volume has gone up, the temperature is rising, there fore humans releasing more C02 must be causing it. There is no casual effect, and they don't even pretend there is, if you don't agree with them you are stooge, end of discussion.
I agree pollution is a problem that needs to be addressed. However, we're not doing that, because they're too busy scaring the hell out of people in order to ram through trillions in new taxes, and massive social engineering of society.
And we have begun the process of weaning off fossil fuels. The problem is the current technology is not nearly as efficient as fossil fuels – at this point in history. The technologies will improve, and people will move to them, as soon as they become more economical. And the government could do an awful lot of good by staying out of the process and letting free markets determine which technologies are the best. Dishing out billions in tax breaks and grants to groups based upon political affiliation and campaign donations is a complete waste. And that is exactly what is happening. If a politician is deciding who gets grants, there are politics involved.

An 8 yr-old cannot understand Washington's anguish over the slave trade, so being that they can't understand it, it's irrelevant at that time. This does not surprise me at all. I went to a fairly conservative liberal arts college in Texas and had to take a class for my minor (which was sociology) entitled "Social Class". In this class, our professor had us read this book and made Karl Marx sound like a hero and Socialism sound like some sort of amazing idea. At the time, I was young and naive and actually bought into it. But now looking back on it, I wonder how in the world I ever believed that?
Like any kids will be watching the History Channel anyway…unless they are forced to in the classroom. Either way, kids won't be paying much attention to it beyond what might be on the test and then purging that just in time for Christmas Break or summer. Short of pinning their little eyelids open and tying them to a chair for 72 hours straight I don't think we are in much danger of them picking up these nutbags' veiled agenda.

The people who excelled in their professions and became CEOs, inventors, business owners, creators, leaders, etc., did so because they worked hard and deserved what they earned. So what if they make millions! The great thing about capitalism is that you, yes you, are free to do the exact same thing if you have the work ethic to do it. In today's day and age, it seems like everyone thinks that they are entitled to the American Dream. No hard work, no saving and earning, no value, just give me a house, a car and free healthcare RIGHT NOW!! These are the people who would embrace socialism. Are we going to let people like Zinn educate and destroy our youth? I urge anyone who has taken the time to read this, to think about it very deeply, as it applies to you, personally. This article is but one tiny example of the destruction we all face. I'm not talking about physical death and pain, but the destruction of your spirit and mind. Remember that idea that you had? Maybe it surfaced when you were younger. Maybe you thought of being a great, accomplished, successful person. Maybe you wanted to open a business, or become a Vice President of something. Or perhaps you invented something, and thought of ways to get it off the ground, and out in the marketplace. Did you do the thing that you set out to do? Are you happy with your accomplishments? If not, it's not too late to do anything about it. Embrace the freedom that you have today to chase after the dreams that were, or are, important to you. Go for it! You could fail, and maybe lose everything that you have- but so what? Wouldn't that be better that living the rest of your life as an average?
As a parent of three children, I hope that my kids education takes them on a path to discover the truth. What I fear most is that too many people read or watch something and then believe what they have just read or seen as the "truth". We need to be wary of people like Patrick Courrielche not Howard Zinn. This article is filled with his opinions which he represents as "truth". If he was really concerned for our children, he might have read Zinn's books to really understand what Zinn is trying to say. Zinn's message is pretty clear – what we know about our history is not complete and it's up to us to seek the truth, whether it is good or bad.

Your experience mirrors my own. We like the concept of home schooling, in theory. We even home schooled our oldest child for a couple of years. However, it's a huge drain on time and we didn't see results commensurate with the effort — in ourselves or others.
I've never met a home school kid who was socially comfortable with most people. I have met some who were academically successful, but also a number who were well behind grade. I'm just not impressed with the results I've actually seen.
I think it should be your right to home school, but not for utilitarian reasons. I also think it should be your right to smoke and drink at home, to eat all the unhealthy food you can afford, and to watch professional wrestling until your brains melt and run out your ears.

Having never heard of, or read from any of Zinn's books, I don't feel I can comment on them. It does sound to me from the blogger’s comments that Mr. Zinn relates events that actually happened, though the perspective may not paint America in a good light. I don't object to our children learning about the less pleasant facts about our history because those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. How they are presented, and at what time in their education is certainly important, but I would suggest that the uproar is little more than a tempest in a teapot. The vast majority of history curriculums are set by States. Those standards are then rigorously tested. Teachers do not have the time to insert new or varied information because of the need to ensure children are prepared for the standardized testing. Since that testing is now being used to pass or fail schools and educators, with funding and employment implications, a lot will need to change before there is a significant shift to anything but the most basic overview of our history.

The indoctrination of our children has been going on for many years. They believe that it is government's responsibility to take care of them from birth to death. They don't understand the concept of not having everything you want or of working for your wants and needs. They believe the government should provide everything for them. Such as a nice car, a good education, a good job, a nice house, excellent medical care and all the electronic toys ( music and DVD players, cameras and video recorders, computers, cell phones, TVs) everything they have grown up using and in their minds can't live without. What's interesting is their compete ignorance of how much all this costs and the freedoms taken away when you give government complete control of your life from birth to death.
The 18 to 24 year olds are the Me Generation. They want everything given to them now and they believe that is government’s job.

I started reading Zinn's book because one of my son's high school teachers encouraged them to read it; the first few pages were so grossly biased and deceptive that I didn't need to go any further.
Unfortunately, this is the perfect strategy to appeal to a post-literate society: make films that promote a particular point of view. It's unfortunate that only the left has both money and will to do stuff like this. I have written a screenplay for a dramatic film (based on actual events and trial transcripts) about slavery, federalism, resistance to unlawful authority, the Democratic Party's involvement in slavery, and lots and lots of guns! But no one on the right has any money or interest in something that might actually make a decent return. (Look at how well Passion of the Christ did.)

The difficulty probably comes in families where both parents need to work to put food on the table. Even so – there are ways to schedule in school time. It is estimated that Public Schools spend less than 50% of the school day on actual teaching. The rest is Political Brainwashing, Indoctrination, and dealing with ever-increasing behavioral problems. The behavior problems may be the most time-consuming, and they drag the rest of the class down to the lowest common denominator.
I know with 100% certainty that my daughter is better than the Lowest Common Denominator. In fact, everyboday's kid is better than the LCD – even the dumbest kid alive – because by lowering everyone down to his level – then he has higher example to look up to!

We had a local homeschool group of 50-100 people where we had drama classes, band, field trips, etc… and almost all of us were socally normal. There were a few people we called "The Pilgrims" and they were weird homeschoolers who wore old timey clothes and refused to fix their hair or talk to people. That had nothing to do with being homeschooled, that had to do with their parents being nuts.

I was homeschooled until college. I had a lot of friends that were public schooled, and a lot that were homeschooled. I got to college and I made friends there, joined organization on campus, and partyed mildly without doing anything stupid or effecting my grades.
The social argument is a lie. I know a lot of homeschooled friends who came out as socially normal as my friends that went to public school.
The logical error comes from the fact that there are homeschooled kids that tend to be very weird and strange. This is due to their parents being nuts… and people like that are drawn to homeschooling so they can raise their children in isolation and teach them to be nuts.
However, if your parents are normal, and they raise you normally while homeschooling you… no social problems.

You seem to be a student of my work, so it seems to me you might have saved yourself some time if you had noticed that I haven't advocated implementing Zinn's program into public schools. I've defended his program from complete bastardization a couple of times, but then even only when begged to (by my standards of begging. I know begging when I read it between the lines). I've read Zinn, and I think he should be read – that is, chosen to be read. But you're spot on about the problem of canonizing him, with his admitted subjectivity. The way I see it, Zinn is to public academia as Kucinich or Paul is to president. They aren't getting the job, but they'll stir the pot like no one else is able, or willing to do, in the process of trying. Why does the pot need stirring? Well, even though I do care about the children, when it comes to this particular venue, my aim is a little different. This place is called "Andrew Breitbarts Presents: Big Hollywood," for Pete's sake. Who am I going to intellectually sway, honestly? This is not a forum for ideas; this is a social forum. And based on your level of articulation and sound reasoning, my advice to you is: run. The pot needs stirring in this case not because of the children but because of the grown-ups, for their insistence that "we set the standard for equal rights for other nations to follow." Your knowledge of history is pretty short. Islamic hatred of the West goes back far before the overthrow of Mossadegh. America's first significant foreign war was against the Barbary pirates, who seized non-Muslim ships and sold the crews into slavery, if not redeemed by ransom. Muslims were raiding Europe as far north as Ireland to kidnap people into slavery as late as the 1600s. The Muslim slave trade of white Europeans was only a bit smaller than European slave trade of black Africans.
As someone who worked on a series for the History Channel, the worst UFO series ever made in fact, I can not understand why they would do this. On the other hand. They did the series I worked on for 2.5 years!!!

Well, i never said we created slavery, nor implied it. We didn't 'end' slavery, however, as there are pockets of the world where it still exists today. Furthermore, even some of the most ardent abolishionists in the civil war era did not remotely hold a conception of social equality that we do today (some actually advocated a 'return to Africa' agenda because they felt that racial integration was either impossible or undesirable).

That isn't a slight towards abolitionists: it is merely an illustration that societies and goverments and individuals are complex, always have been, and always will be. Napoleon was undeniably a tyrant, but the civil code he implimented was a profound improvment, in terms of fairness, to the legal frameworks that proceeded him. He also ended a barbaric and unsustainable democracy that came out of the French Rev. I think you completely missed my point, which is that teaching children that the great works of our founders (or any historic figure) is not diminished by also teaching about their failings, both in terms of the moral view of their contemporaries and of modern thought. My point is that worshiping the founders as perfect beings is as contemptible as finding no good in their accomplishments. Howard Zinn provides a counter-balance to the extreme of hero-worship without falling to far the other way. That doesn't make him authoratative on American History, but failing to hear his perspective, or much worse, intentionally censoring it, is both bad history and, to ironically quote his opponents, 'unamerican'.

One of my wife's students has recently returned from Afghanistan. Farmers there told him that the Taliban collects taxes by threatening to behead their children. Why is this acceptable? Because Islam is a culture built on violence in a way that even the West isn't.

Tyzik has some valid points that history books of the past, say 20 years ago, tend to highlight the positive and not the dirty little secrets. We could have an endless debate about patriotism, nationalism, (name an -ism), ect and its importance to a nation's identity and preservation.
The real question is, to me at least, is when can a person 'handle the truth'. Certainly not at elementary level and I would even make a case not at the collegiate level (there is no real world experience). Pointing out that our Founding Fathers were flawed is, well, self evident. Look at what some of our most respected statemen and celebrities get into today. Are they special? No! They are just under a microscope, in a culture, where there is never a enough dirt and everything is realtime. Challenging the idea that our culture/identity in the United States is not a problem for some, because we can handle it and maybe even provide some lessons learned. Unfortunately, most can not, whether they are not mentally acute, apethetic, or close minded. There are people who would take advantage of the latter case, manipulating the information in presentation to convince them that WE have to CONFORM to an IDEAL, that NO ONE has ever been able to accomplish (this works for both political parties by the way).
Let's face facts. The one thing that is destroying our country is the NEED (willingness?!?) to conform to some subjective standard that is ill-defined and subject to a minorities grandiose plan to control the masses. When we began giving up our individual liberties for the greater good, we began our decent into the quagmire of today. Is it wrong to want to help your neighbor? No! Is wrong to dictate that I help my neighbor? Yes.

I've said many times that public schools are surreal as often as real. The social interactions that happen are rarely duplicated in a professional life. At least it's not as overt. Also, you are thrown in with many different social norms. Good in some ways but dangerous in others as there is really little supervision.
What I see happening more and more, is kids that have issues bring them to school and other kids pay the price. They can't be disciplined. When its over the top bad, then they get serious consideration from admin folks which can lead to a police record. Not a good start in life.

I'm an historian and I've actually read Zinn's first book, the People's History. Let me say that from a historical viewpoint, Zinn does us a service by presenting the views of those who were on the losing side of history. Unlike most college professors though, we need to acknowledge his is only one side of the story, not the whole truth. Just like blind patriotism, blind criticism is just as dishonest and hurts our education system.
Zinn is a radical. He admits it. He admits to having a bias. As an historian I don't approve of this. And as for a documentary, well it could be interesting. The fact that it'll end up being taught as fact in classrooms when it is in fact, only one biased side of a story that neglects much of American history, is something to be worried about. Zinn has also had his b ook turned into a two volume kids series as well: A Young People's History of the United States. He definitely gets on the anti-American bandwagon and takes it a little too far from a historical viewpoint.

I have not looked over the lesson plan in great detail, but certain claims by the author of this article (teaching about lynching to 3-yr olds, or some such thing). Well, I can't call that a lie, but I'd be astonished if it were true.

At least then we can put the value of his work in perspective. Bias will always exist in historical accounts, but finding it is easier when we know what to look for up front.

Homeschooling is a choice that isn't made lightly, nor should it be made based on economics alone. Most 2 income families would get along just fine if they are willing to give up some of thier wants (you'd be surprised how much you can save by giving up your daily Pepsi and/or Starbucks, or by packing your lunch rather than buying it ever day); this can often be done without sacrificing needs.
If you're contemplating homeschooling but think you can't afford it ask yourself which is more important, homeshooling or your I-phone, satellite TV, new car, etc.
My wife and I made the decision 11 years ago and although I don't have all the toys I would like to have (my truck is 18 yrs old, I don't have the boat I want, and my TV ain't flat) but we are confident that our decision was the best for our daughters.

Homeschooled children are often taught to socialize with adults rather than with children. When my wife and I found we were expecting our first my father told me to raise her to be a good adult and not worry about being a good kid. As a pre-teen she's confident, witty, and creative. She makes friends easily and speaks to adults with respect. I'm confident she'll do just fine while I have my doubts about her public schooled friends who are more interested in computer games, sexually charged dolls/movies, and who suffer from self esteem problems brought on by thier peers.

Well EdSki, I hope that works. I'm on multiple websites almost daily as well as my blog and my blogtalkradio show every couple of days. With the way that those in the media are acting as toadies (they're putting former Clinton press guy George Stephanopolous as an anchor on GMA) to the liberal left, and the arses in the Dem party are belittling the people who are coming out against them, I am very afraid we will have to resort to the other method provided to us in the Constitution. The method that they fear the most and are working diligently to eliminate if at all possible. Thomas Jefferson wrote that "The strongest argument for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is to protect themselves from tyranny in government." I hope we can reverse this sleigh ride to hell without it, but there are plenty who are preparing for that possibility that we can not. The people in Congress need to learn a simple math lesson. They're outnumbered and liberals aren't gun owners.
A huge problem with countering this sort of leftist garbage is that many people have problems explaining to others (and especially children) why capitalism is such a great system. I'm well aware of the presidents who owned slaves yet, they didn't participate in the slave trade and freed them upon their deaths, did you know that Vance? I'm well aware of the struggles of women's suffrage (that's the right to vote in case you didn't know that) and who Susan B. Anthony is. I'm a firm believer in what Martin Luther King Jr (a Republican just so you know) said about judging a man by the content of his character and not the color of his skin. I believe that we made great, great progress and can claim great achievements that so few countries can even fathom. The difference between Conservatives and Liberals is that Conservatives learn from the past, while Liberals dwell on it, pick at it until it becomes infected. For all their talk of progress, the left refuses to let go of all of America's wrongs, and neglect it's rights. That isn't progression, it's digression! We must not continue to blame ourselves for acts that were committed by wrong thinking individuals centuries ago. Let us instead look at our accomplishments and the things we have done, and will continue to do, right. Should we teach our children the horrors of racism in this country? Yes. We should also teach our children that they should put those fears to rest and let them know that here in America everyone has an equal shot. I don’t, however, think Zin gets a pass because he is Jewish (many so-called neo-con Jews are shunned by mainstream media/Hollywood/academia), I think he gets a pass because he is a Liberal professor with violently anti-American views. So, Patrick, should we teach children fairy tales about America's founding fathers, and leave it till adulthood for them to find out the truth? Is it so shocking that these men were mere mortals, subject to the same character flaws and biases that beset politicians to this day? Does that really detract from the significance of their accomplishments? You need not be a avowed marxist to note that American History is not simply the story of economic, social and political progress . . . indeed, progress implies that we move from one state of being to another, that is to say, at one time, things weren't perfect, and dare i say, slavery was a barbaric institution that remained in place for nearly a century after the founding of the republic. Even American Exceptionalism can survive a small amount of constructive self-criticism. Hero-worship, or in this case, founder-worship, is as equally contemptible as those perspectives that reflexively see the worst in every aspect of American history. Zinn engages in a reality-based reflection of American History that is of crucial value to all, even absent his political leanings. There is no sense in seeking a more perfect Union if we had one from the start.

Jeff – America did not create slavery. She inherited slavery – and ended slavery. And George Washington never treated blacks the way modern-day blacks treat eachother. There are at least 20 documented letters by Washington addressed to the Virgina House of Burgesses ordering an end to slavery in the Virginia and Maryland colonies. The House denied Washington's request and threatened him with beheading. Washington also funneled many of Virginia's slaves into Pennsylvania (which was a free state) because the law there stated that blacks who reside in Pennsylvania for six months will be granted freedom. Washington also passes laws outlawing the breakup of slave families in all thirteen colonies and ordered all slaves in Mount Vernon freed. You cannot use todays norms and apply them to the founding of the republic. Slavery was one of millions of worries on Washington's plate at the time. The time was entirely different. By all means, Americans two hundred years from today will look at us as barbarians. Abortion, aguably, comes to mind.

Do you know anyone that thinks America is perfect? I've never met such a person. When I teach history, I teach the good and the bad, because there's plenty of both present. Zinn's approach seems predicated on the idea that kids are only told how good America is. This might have been valid in 1950, or even 1960. Even then, I wonder. I have an American history set published in the early 1960s by Golden Book aimed at elementary school age kids. It discusses quite forthrightly the theft of Indian lands, enslavement of Africans, the Trail of Tears, and a pile of other depressing bad things in American history. But it also teaches the other side of American history as well, which liberals seem reluctant to do.

1. Zinn's books are not one-sided. They present many perspectives in the form of direct quotations. Sure, these perspectives have been hand-picked, but to say that they are all Zinn's perspective is fallacious.
2. Zinn's books have not been limited to colleges and universities. You can't sell over a million copies of a book if its not widely available and widely purchased.
3. Kids aren't as malleable or vulnerable as they're often portrayed to be by people who'd like to weaponize them for the purpose of creating fear and anger. Children can't simply be broken down and built back up as socialists by being exposed to various types of history, so let's not pretend that they can be.

No true intellectual would crucify anyone else for having a different perspective. Reality is subjective and dismissing an alternative perspective simply because it does not fall in line with your current world view is the definition of ignorance.
Textbooks should be factual, but how do you even ensure this happens? History is written by the winners, or the one's being paid to publish said books. Do you suppose the history of a conquered people might have an opposing perspective on history than its conquerors?

I am awake and I see what's happening. America was not founded on the principles of dissent. It was founded on the principles of leaving the countries that were oppressive. The people who came here felt so oppressed by the socialisms, dictatorships, and monarchies that they lived under at that time that they left those places for a "new world". In my opinion, the founders would collectively vomit at the welfare nanny state we have allowed to happen.

And exactly when should that be taught? When they're 5 or 6? Or should that be taught once they have a better ability to process that type of information? I doubt Zinn's book includes the fact that the importation of slaves was limited by the Constitution. I doubt it includes that the first person killed by the British at the Boston Massacre was a free black man named Crispus Attucks. It should say something that the first reported casualty of what would become the American Revolution was a free black man who was standing up with other free men against a repressive monarchy. From the excerpt that was printed from Zinn's book, he makes the Brits look like the good guys. The British, French,Dutch and Spanish started slavery on this continent, the Americans ended it.
I have no problems with the darker side of American history being taught in schools, as long as it is taught in an UNBIASED and age appropriate way. Zinn's book is neither.

I've worked in the inner city areas dealing with them. Obviously you haven't. I managed a rent to own store and I've delivered the Big Screen Tvs, home theatres, 100 watt stereos, living room sets, bedroom sets , etc etc etc to the people who were living in the projects rent and utility free, receiving hundreds of dollars worth of food stamps, and thousands in AFDC checks every month. I had one customer who was 23 yrs old. Her mother hadn't held a job her entire life, and this woman had three illegitimate children by 3 different baby daddies. She had a government funded associates degree in office management, and absolutely no desire to actually get a job. Her comment was "Why should I get a job? I get more on welfare than I'd get working and I don't have to do anything to get it." That was a common mentality among the entitlement class.
We waste more money at inner city schools where they won't do anything for themselves as long as they can get a check, a crib and some food stamps paid for with someone else's sweat. The money is being spent (DC has the highest per student expenditure in the country) they are just taught by their parents to scam the system instead of working.

Zinn does teach young Americans to hate the nation as he states that the U.S. "is rotten at the core." He also views the People Republic of China as a positive manifestation of socialism. Interesting, considering the 75 million that perished under Chairman Mao. I do not seem to recall the Chinese government having too much tolerance for student dissent back in 1989 when the tanks rolled in either.
According to Zinn, the Founders placed their economic interests above their fundamental beliefs. This makes no sense. Consider George Washington: he may have been damaged somewhat by British taxation, but it was nothing compared to the losses he could have suffered by leading the Continental Army. If captured, he most certainly would have been executed. His property would not increase in value during a war. In short, Washington had everything to lose and nothing financially to gain. He did have a strong belief in liberty. As did the other Founders, who were all guilty of treason by signing the Declaration of Independence. Almost all of the Founders lost money and property, and many lost family for the ideals they believed in. None profited from the Revolution.

I know what dissent is. I disagree with the notion that the country was founded on dissent. The colonists declared independence based on dissent. That is clear. The USA did NOT exist at that time.
The constitution, which formed the USA came years later, and is based on representative democracy and agreement. The founders worked together to come to agreement, they did not work to disagree. It does have provisions to change itself through constitutional convention, ie an agreement that is voted on by the enumerated officials. It also has provisions for sedition and treason. So people are not free to do whatever they please (in dissent) to change the nature of the country. The leaders at the time ratified the constitution by signing in agreement; they did not sign in dissent.
Freedom of speech is often the source of the 'dissent' argument. The founders specifically allowed for the people to have differences of opinion, especially regarding political discourse, and to express them free of government punishment. So in that way dissent is a unique part of the US. But it is not the founding principle. I have just as much freedom to agree with someone as freedom to disagree.

Anyone can be a corporate executive, so that doesn't mean much…all you have to do is pay a little money to get incorporated and "poof" you're a corporate executive. I'm CEO of my own corporation as well, set up in a manner that allows for fair distribution of wealth among the employees, without exploiting workers.
As for clothing and food…the labels I see everywhere say China, Indonesia, Thailand, etc. I see clothing and other items that are not the result of your freedom to choose but rather the decision to exploit workers in other countries who have a lower standard of living and who don't have to be paid much (they go on living in 3rd world conditions while we enjoy their products). I have account after account (published), as well as videos, of the working conditions of those who make our clothes and products, as well as their living conditions. These are workers who have been exploited by U.S. corporations in the pursuit of profit over people. These corporations are not interested in the lives of these workers. They are only interested in squeezing more profit out of revenue to fill the pockets of those at the very top.
Capitalism fails every 7 years…don't believe me…research it. Every 7 years the Capitalist system goes bust…what we have experienced since December of 2008 is the 7th year bust. If Capitalism works so well, why can the markets not correct themselves as Capitalism assumes? If Capitalism works so well, why does China own billions in dollars of our debt? Isn't China Communist? If Capitalism works so well, why did the taxpayers – the workers (not the Corp Execs or the rich ruling class) – have to bail out the financial institutions and the U.S. auto industry?
The problem with the current system is that only a few can increase wealth, as their is only so much wealth. As that few increase their wealth, they do so by exploiting the opportunity of others. If you do the math, and think this through logically, you'll see that you can't have everyone get rich. You'll also find that getting rich requires workers. And so on. Spend some time thinking about the world around you, instead of on your self, and you will realize what I'm talking about.
Capitalism is a system of greed, war, coups, individualism (look that up), and exploitation. Only with a system of true Socialism (not Nazism, Fascism, Maoism, or Stalinism, which are all more like the current U.S. government than anything) can ALL have a standard of living that is fair and just. Only with a system of true Socialism can the promise and power of true DEMOCRACY work for the people, instead of the Capitalist system that works for the ruling class (especially professional politicians and MNCs).

I appreciate your comments. I can tell, however, that you do not have much, if any, college education. I do have a graduate degree in business administration from one of the country's oldest military universities. Does that qualify me as intelligent? No. However, what it does afford me is a knowledge-base from which to base informed decisions and conclusions. It also affords me that ability to counter illogical arguments.
So, before you continue to throw around nonsense as though it reflects understanding of government, history, business, society, or economics, I encourage you to open some books. Or is that something capitalists don't want people to do? One thing capitalism is known for is keeping people ignorant, educating people on capitalist propaganda (including through the corporate owned media) only, keeping facts away from the masses or grossly distorting them, while all the while raping the welfare of human beings worldwide and destroying the environment in the process. I have supported the radical Right in the past. Stalin was an evil tyrant who turned the Socialist Revolution of Lenin and Trotsky around to his own personal benefit…one man in power is anti-Socialist and anti-Democratic, and Socialism only supports true Democracy. And to the woman who said that Zinn didn't use citations–I have a copy right here with about 50 pages of small print citiations in the back of it. Maybe someone ripped them out of your book?
When reading his rant, one can't help but wonder whether Courrielche or any of the right-wing zealots posting here have even the slightest inkling of what Marxism actually is, or have even opened something like "Capital" or "The Communist Manifesto." What is it about Marxism that terrifies you people so much? If capitalism is so much better than socialism, then what could possibly be the risk of letting your children learn about both? On the other hand, if it isn't such a bad idea, then wouldn't you want your children to learn about it? Or are you afraid that such ideas might challenge your own comfort and security?
More to the issue at hand, what is it about children learning history that you object to? Setting aside the fact that Courrielche lied about the age-level that the lessons he mentions were written for, what exactly do you have against school children discussing the role of slavery in the United States, or the history of the Pledge of Allegiance? Zinn can at least refer to Degler and several other sources to back his statement that Washington was the richest man in America at that time. Can you back your claim that he wasn't, or that Zinn has an "anti-American" agenda. In fact, can you even offer a reasonable explanation as to why someone who hates America so much would go to all the trouble of investing most of his life in learning about its history, or to take what he learned and turn it into a book that he can share with other people in this country? By reasonable, of course, I mean can you do this without resorting to the ridiculous claim that he's secretly trying to subvert little children by enticing them into reading his 729-page book.

What I was asking you was whether you could back any of your claims with "scholarly research." Zinn's work is thoroughly researched and well-documented. You have yet to offer a single citation. Moreover, if the only point that you're able to dispute in Zinn's work is Washington's net worth, then your claim that his work is "full of factual errors" is rather spurious at best.
So if Zinn's assessment that something "something fundamental was wrong with this country" makes him anti-American, then what does that make people like Thomas Paine or Patrick Henry, who opposed the Constitution? Pretty much the first thing the Marx character in Zinn's play does is condemn those killings. Zinn actually directly confronts the horrors you speak of in his books, the which you would know if you actually read them instead of trusting whatever you read on the internets.
Try having a conversation with a socialist some time and ask them what they think of Stalin or Pol Pot. I have a few socialist friends, and I've never heard a word of praise from them for the kind of violence and oppression you throw at their feet. Me being a Democrat, I honestly spend most of our friendly political conversations defending Bill Clinton or Obama from the harsh criticism that Socialists levy at them on a regular basis.
