ObamaVision: What (4th Place) CNN Chose Not to Report
by Patrick CourrielcheWhich network was it that was accused of broadcasting opinion journalism masquerading as news?
On Friday, during the “CNN Newsroom” hour, the network broadcast a story of the White House’s use of Hollywood to promote national service. Your humble Big Hollywood contributor was interviewed for this “news” segment.
–
Their conclusion: 1) promoting volunteerism is a pretty benign message, and 2) Presidents throughout history have also promoted volunteerism so this White House Hollywood effort is nothing new.
After coming to these two conclusions, the host Rick Sanchez asked the reporter Brooke Anderson, “What is the threshold then…at what point do we get past that slippery slope when now we’re going to be taking orders from the Commander-in-Chief and we in Hollywood have to be the ones that deliver that order?”
Anderson responded: “Glenn Beck compared it to Mao’s Communist China, so some do feel it has already slid on that slippery slope and gotten past the threshold. But I want to mention Rick that plenty of past American Presidents have encouraged community service and volunteerism.” Anderson then goes on to give examples of both Bush 41 and Bush 43 promoting service.
The reporters, however, failed to highlight key information that I provided which takes this national service campaign out of the “benign” category.
When I was interviewed by CNN, I too made the point that promoting volunteerism is a noble effort that has been undertaken by Presidents throughout history. However, when pressed by the reporter on the “threshold” question, I provided clear examples as to why Big Hollywood was troubled by the White House’s national service campaign.
First, we were concerned that the White House, through the Entertainment Industry Foundation, was asking TV shows to infuse specific issues, including health, energy, and the environment, into their show story plots at a time when these issues are being vehemently debated nationally.
At no time throughout the report did CNN make any mention of the EIF memo encouraging TV shows to “organically” include these issues into their show story plots. The inclusion of these issues within the memo was a very important fact and a big reason why we even decided to discuss our concerns about this volunteerism effort. We even gave CNN the example of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” a show that signed on to the EIF volunteerism campaign, which was an entire episode devoted to advocating for universal health insurance. Not including this policy advocacy example and the issues mentioned in the memo was irresponsible at best.
The second concern that was mentioned during my interview was the partisan nature of the White House’s volunteerism effort. During the interview I mentioned that if you search the term “Republican” on Serve.gov, you receive a paltry 2 pages of opportunities, many of which are Democrat cause opportunities that have the word Republican somewhere in the text. However, if you search “Democrat” you receive 20 pages of opportunities, the maximum number of pages that will display for any search term (meaning there are probably many more than 20 pages). Any balanced reporting on the White House’s volunteerism effort would have shown that egregious disparity.
They also did not include additional information tying the government to this iParticipate campaign.
In the segment, CNN provided an unattributed statement from the White House as follows: “The iParticipate program is being run independently of the administration and isn’t asking Americans to participate in any one activity.”
If iParticipate is run independently of the administration, how does the White House know what it is and is not asking of Americans?
When I was asked by CNN to provide information linking the government to the iParticipate campaign, I gave them no shortage of connections. I provided the video of the First Lady announcing the iParticipate campaign, which they showed, but I also provided a link on Serve.gov (a government site) that has an entire section devoted to how to pitch iParticipate to the media as well as links to press releases (here and here) that indicated that the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency in charge of promoting national service, worked with the EIF on this campaign. The memo itself references President Obama’s call to service in the first sentence and asked the TV networks to address the same issues that the administration highlighted as the primary issues for the recovery effort.
Did CNN follow up with the White House or the EIF, who also denied a collaborative effort, with any of the above evidence that shows the government’s role? If they did, it wasn’t included in the segment.
Yes Mr. Sanchez and Ms. Anderson, promoting volunteerism is a pretty benign message that has been undertaken by Presidents of both parties. But asking the TV networks to infuse specific issues into their show story plots – issues that are being debated vehemently nationally – is not a benign activity. The EIF memo shows this specific encouragement and we have given the links tying this effort to our government. You showed no evidence of a connection between past government themed films that you gave viewers, yet you held them up as if they were the same as this effort. By not providing the above information you did not give the full story to your viewers.
Lately, there has been much discussion of a certain network’s “opinion journalism masquerading as news.” I think it is fair to say that both Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck’s shows are completely in the open with their perspective. The same cannot be said regarding this CNN “Newsroom” report.

Nicely handled, Patrick, despite the fact that Sanchez had his fingers in his ears while "la la la-ing" during your responses. Seriously, how do you legitimately argue with someone who won't listen to your side? When in Rome, become a liberal, I suppose.
I saw a recent video where Valerie Jarrett labeled FOX news reporting as "distortions". Seems to me the distortions are coming from the WH and any news organizations that push their agenda. Ratings tell it all–people are flocking to where they know they can get the truth.
"Organically" or not, CNN IS PRAVDA for the liberal agenda.
Lately, there has been much discussion of a certain network’s “opinion journalism masquerading as news.
Interesting…this portrayal is entirely true if you use it in reference to CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, NYTimes, White House Press secretary, et.al. The only changes I would suggest to make it more descriptive are: "biased, compromised, liberal butt-kissing, excrescent opinion journalism masquerading as news".
Actually Laura Bush spent her time promoting mentor programs. Provide service to or decent human interaction for lonely children. THAT is noble.
Duping the unsuspecting masses to "work for free" for the plethora of organizations with shady management and shadow missions IS THE SLIPPERY SLOPE. Usually when you ask a question you expect an answer. The more questions you ask about the nature of these organizations and how they are all softly linked and funded the more questions you have.
AND THAT is why CNN should be ashamed. Shame shame shame. Something tells me that "work for free" won't have the legs to go the distance.
But isn't this POTUS using education 'credits' to bait desperate citizens into volunteering via (I believe) Americorps. I just saw an ad in a local newspaper that seeks other organizations to run local 'chapters' which had to maintain a couple dozen "volunteers" in exchange for a quarter million dollars. Where is this money coming from folks???

This Administration isn't looking for volunteers. Their looking for us to become the Eloi.
My favorite portion of the report was when the reporter typed "Health Care" into the iParticipate site, found TWO listings for Planned Parenthood and thought nothing of it….
It's an incredible moment.
Any person living in the real world understands that…
1. "Health Care is the biggest issue of the day and the one most people will look for at the site…
2. Planned Parenthood should not be found under "health care"
3. Planned Parenhood sure as hell shouldn't pop up on the FIRST Page!
4. Real reporters ask, "Is this programmed this way?"
Sure, type "abortion" and you find some pro-life groups… Apples vs. oranges. Reporting vs. Cover up. All around PATHETIC.
I was telling a customer of mine in The Netherlands about this "promoting volunteerism" program the White House has going and he summed it up perfectly. "It's conditioning." he said. Isn't that the perfect word for it? They're just promoting volunteering for a good cause! And you're a bunch of right wing hatemongers to object to encouraging kids to help out at the local soup kitchen. But once we're "conditioned" to accept these messages, maybe the next one is about the importance of health care reform or cap and trade. In 4 years, all these shows are actively promoting the reelection of Barack Obama. At what point DO we object? And how far of a stretch is it from there to "we've always been at war with Eastasia?"
It's the communist manifesto….
"…Rick Sanchez asked… '…we in Hollywood…'"
'Nuff said.
Left wing media and people like Michael Moore make it their focus to provide only half the facts of any issue or story. They know that their targeted audience lacks the intelligence and the integrity to ask any further questions from the source delivering the messege. Therefore, all they must do is present their side of the story and their audience will stop right there, form an opinion, and promote it without ever questioning the motives or agenda of their messenger. Don't believe me, just consider virtually any Hollywood actor or actress. I rest my case.
John, it is health care – Planned Parentood = death panels for life unworthy of life.
BTW, Margaret Sanger's name means "bitter blood".
wonder how well Rick Sanchez sleeps at night after crippling a man and then driving away drunk…
But that's not supposed to matter as weaklings like him opine on other's shortcomings. It is telling, though…
Once again CNN is proving to be a mere extension of the White House communications team. While I am a mere bush-leaguer in the arts world I applaud Mr. Courrielche for the leadership he has shown on an issue that should concern all artists and, indeed, all citizens regardless of partisan politics.
I hope that we survive this attack and can one day look upon this whoring of the arts with the same feelings of quaintness that we do the Cleavers touting Kellogg's Cornflakes or Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble puffing on Winston cigarettes.
I like your reference to George Orwell's "1984." When the state dictates the message to the media, how is that anything but totalitarianism, or conditioning as your friend put it?
Another parallel that's rarely discussed is how in 1984 the dictionary keeps getting smaller, and it's trumpeted as an achievement. Makes me think of today's politically correct speech, how there's a lot of words we can't use and people we can't criticize, and it's called "progress."
Progress goes on long enough, with people that can't be attacked and words that are forbidden, and we end up with ACORN.
Thank you again. Patrick, for shining the light on MSM cockroaches.
It's just more of the "Move along folks! Nothing to see here!" Media! Incredible indeed!
State propaganda masquerading as entertainment!
Thank you for continuing to expose this, Patrick.
The book "Nudge" by Sunstein.
And since when are volunteers ordered to do service?
As will other government entities, such as General Motors and financial institutions.
I've posted this all over the place today, but it's relevant.
An interesting read from across the pond:
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/10...
From Rich Sanchez's wikipedia page:
On December 10, 1990, Sanchez, drunk, struck a pedestrian, Jeffrey Smuzinick, with his car on a residential street near Dolphin Stadium after Smuzinick darted into the road.[6] Smuzinick was paralyzed and eventually died in an assisted living facility in 1995.[6][7] Sanchez, who had just left an NFL football game with his father (and left the scene of the accident), was not charged with causing the accident, but was charged with and pleaded no contest to DUI.
Sanchez is a natural at omitting things. He fits in with the culture of CNN who omitted telling us that for years they had a deal going with Saddam to sanitize their broadcasts in return for a presence there.
When their Handcuffed or Brainwashed.
Sanchez is a tool(fool)for the progressives, the idiot.
<img src="http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad62/casey1964/tyranny.jpg?t=1256743419">
Way to walk into that hornet's nest Patty! Seriously, you were calm, cogent, and articulate. The ideologues weren't going to be swayed regardless. However, those with a mind of their own can tell authenticity when they see it. Excellent work.
Rick Sanchez has been a talent-less hack since his days on WSVN in Miami.
(read that outloud in the patented "Sanchez Hushed Tone of Seriousness")
Let's save the hyperbole for the DailyKos people. Sanchez blows his credibility nightly. Stay classy and let Sanchez dig his proverbial grave.
Don't fall into the trap of grouping the opposition as unintelligent. Both sides have their village idiots. If you notice, almost all attacks on conservatives are ad hominem claiming they are evil, stupid, or both. Underestimating Michael Moore's intelligence and talent does not help expose him for the propagandist he is. He's very talented and we could learn a ton from him.
Let the organization of the Civilian Army begin!
I'm sure the early members of the S.A. were "volunteers" too!
Obama=volunteers Hitler=beer hall *protection* squad
or *paid* see ACORN for reference.
I found that quite interesting as well. I'm sure, like me, you read Patrick's prior piece regarding the search engine's results. You could tell CNN thought that must have been a pretty compelling piece of evidence due to the abortion search "response" piece, which was misleading at best.
Rick, why don't you bring your black suit and greaser hair down to my town and walk down the streets telling all the veterans that The Green Berets was a propaganda piece and John Wayne was nothing more than a political shill?
I believe you may get your ass kicked for saying something like that.
It's a scary, sad state of affairs when abortions = health care.
The most telling line from the novel (remember, keep the MSM in mind when you read this):
"He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future."
-scary.
Sure, I've got another 20 minutes. That ought to be long enough.
Wow I googled it and it's true. Drunk Sanchez left the scene of an accident, left a guy paralyzed, and has never volunteered one cent to help the victim.
What a dirtbag.
USEFUL IDIOT SANCHEZ.
Did anyone see ABC's Extreme Home Makeover on Sunday? The entire season will be dedicated to volunteerism and guess which families will get nice new homes, paid off mortgages and a variety of other goodies? While encouraging volunteerism is a good thing, it becomes subtle indoctrination when the government enlists the entertainment industry to carry its message to the public – a message that includes the potential for lucrative rewards. It seems we've already lost our footing and are falling head over heels down that slippery slope.
AW SHIT! Are you saying Rick is Cuban??? My wife will be SO Pissed to find one of her Companeros on 'the dark side'!
You cannot disparage the Dear Leader! haha.
Libs got flim-flammed by the snake oil salesman from Kenya!
I'm just glad Sanchez isn't out getting drunk and killing people anymore. He's too busy kissing Obama's bee-hind.
Oh, has anyone noticed that churches aren't mentioned? Well at least I haven't seen any mention. And you will also note that feeding someone spiritually (sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraging people with the message of God's love) has no value. But making someone "feel good" is the best thing you can do. Materialistic, hedonistic, athiestic, left wing crappola.
as with all liberals, it's A) not his fault- demon rum made him do it, and B) not his responsibility to pay up. It's OURS…
didn't think this to be hyperbole- he just got done judging Rush Limbaugh, didn't he? We try to be a class act. Just pointing out those who would throw the proverbial stone…

Hey I'm right there with you Crackadeluxe, but I'm not insulting Michael Moore's intelligence, I'm insulting his followers. Moore's a genius. He knows his audience will never question or look into the so called facts Moore offers them in "Sicko" or "Capitalism". That's my point. Left wing media only has to present a compassionate story to support their case. The actual facts of the issue are irrelevant both to the media presenting them and the audience consuming their messege. And yes your're correct, obviously all Liberals aren't stupid and dishonest, but you'll have a hard time convincing me that most aren't.
This is just a prelude to mandatory 'volunteering' to get your government goodies. Or call it indentured servitued. Or, dare I say it, slavery? Let's not forget that he and his minions have been talking about it from the get go. They just took over student loans, for example. Perfect way to get those young skulls full of mush indoctrinated at their 'training session.' No go? No dough.
One point about Extreme Home Makeover – this is a show from the beginning has highlighted volunteers – all those people helping to build the house, for example. And many of the families helped are ones who are active in their community in some way or other, so this is nothing new for the show. I am guessing they ramped up the emphasis, but it has always been there.
You've got that right Jb. Paid Zombies.
Words, words, words. I admire your enthusiasm and appreciate your bringing this to our attention but my friends on the left who are physicists and Wall Street execs have thick skulls!! When it comes to anything that goes against their precious saviour, the government, the light turns off and their reading comprehension evaporates like water in the vacuum of space. Here's two lines that can get their attention fast enough to keep it:
"Thousand points of light" = a call to volunteerism
"Obamacare posters" = Mao or Stalin's propaganda
Great job Patrick! Who knew a hard-hitting investigate journalist was hiding behind a talented artist?
I agree, CNN is Pravda. Whereas MSNBC only keeps a fig leaf over its bias at times, CNN tries to inveigle the public with a supposed middle ground approach even though everyone knows it is biased. By continuing to hide its bias or not admit it, it gets to continue to play tricks on credulous viewers.
I've watched Rick Sanchez ask some difficult questions about the administration and seen a group of lefties just totally spin it the other way. Does he ever have people from the right on his show? I dunno, there might be hope for Mr. Sanchez but he seems clueless. And CNN is Pravda.
I find it interesting that, in defense of the search feature, they state: "…type in military and an opportunity comes up in Georgia to make care packages for soldiers." Are they saying that troop support is a conservative cause that Democrats just won't do?

Nice point Todd.
Sanchez, a drunk driver guilty of manslaughter, is a 'reporter,' is he? I guess he reports like he drives: badly. As far as volunteerism is concerned, Barack Obama can go to he**.
Good idea. I vounteer my efforts and my vote to ensure obama is not re elected in 2012.
Patrick, in re: the supposed disparity between liberal and conservative volunteer opportunities at Serve.gov, looking at the site I see that the listings are derived from organizations that apply to be listed.(see http://www.serve.gov/spread.asp, upper right corner). Do you have evidence to suggest that the conservative groups applying are being rejected? If not, then it seems likely that the disparity is due to a disproportion in the groups that apply, rather than the administration cherry-picking only the liberal ones. Do you think that they should *reject* the left-leaning applicants to make sure there's an even ideological distribution? If your answer is 'yes' I think that's silly. If your answer is 'no' I don't think you have a legitmate point.
Are you a lawyer, Mike? Can you see the forest for the trees?
who falls for this sh**? Obama cult members, stupid bleeding heart libs, and koolaid drinkers – NEWS FLASH — CONSERVATIVES ALREADY VOLUNTEER!! WE ARE THE ONES SERVING IN THE MILITARY, CONTRIBUTING TO CHARITIES, ADOPTING STRAY PETS, CULLING WILDLIFE POPULATIONS (tee hee – that is actually important in wildlife managent and therefore servicing the community!), SERVING THEIR CHURCHES, SCHOOLS, NEIGHBORS!!! WE'VE BEEN DOING IN OUR ENTIRE LIVES….BECAUSE OUR PARENTS TAUGHT US TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT BECAUSE SOME LOUSY DERANGED STAR OR CULT LEADER, OBAMA, TELLS US TO! WE DON'T NEED GOVERNMENT OR HOLLYWOOD TO TELL US TO SERVE! HOW ABOUT ELECTED OFFICIALS SERVING US FOR A CHANGe!
Don't worry.I consider them evil geniuses.
endless idiocy vomited by mr. sanchez
no wonder no one watches them
inane
If you do some research you'd see that the are using partisan (pro-Obama) groups to promote the site. That explains the overwhelming democratic opportunities.
Patrick, maybe you should have paid more attention to Beck's 'Arguing With Idiots'…just kidding, I'm sure you have read it..but when you are being interviewed by CNN, what do you expect? Obama still has them under his thumb…if they don't 'tow the line' they will get the same treatment as Fox…gee, if I were CNN I would want more of Fox's audience…I'm just sayin'…
was in a restarant tonite and a waitress was tipped $0.00 by some of obama's ilk and entitlement class
She was totally non-plussed that the entitled wrote out $0.00 for tip
I had her as a server and she did a good job, so her service was not the issue
I told her that she had been enrolled in the obama volunteers for service to his entitled brothers
and she said she was going to pass from here out
and the entitled wonder why segregation is alive and kicking
Just turn off your TV , and stop submitting yourself to liberal propaganda..
"The New Adventures of Old Christine" was one of my favorites until that night… I no longer watch it.
CNN, who watches CNN anymore???

Hello,
Maybe it is a way that the leftty leaning President can get people from thinking about how am I going to pay my bills, and everything else. wait I know I will just go, and volunteer. That will take care of everything right? Hog-wash. It is just another way for them to say to hell with you. You do not need a job, and just leave everything up to us we will cover everything up for you, I mean we will treat you okay right? BULL-LEFTOVERS.

CNN has turned into a lap dog for the Progressives, why do I say this? Ever see news stories like this on CNN?
2009: In September, 11 ACORN workers were accused of forging voter registration applications in Miami-Dade County during the last election. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the state attorney’s office scoured hundreds of suspicious applications provided by ACORN and found 197 of 260 contained personal ID information that did not match any living person.
2008: Election officials in Brevard County have given prosecutors more than 23 suspect registrations from ACORN. The state's Division of Elections is also investigating complaints in Orange and Broward Counties.
2009: Nevada authorities indicted ACORN on 26 counts of voter registration fraud and 13 counts of illegally compensating canvassers. ACORN provided a bonus compensation program called “Blackjack” or “21+” for any canvasser who registered more than 20 voters per shift, which is illegal under Nevada law.
2009: Seven ACORN workers in the Pittsburgh area were indicted for submitting falsified voter registration forms. Six of the seven were also indicted for registering voters under an illegal quota system.
