Statement on the Recording of the August 10 NEA Conference Call
by Patrick CourrielcheSome have asked why I feel that it was okay to record the August 10th White House and National Endowment for the Arts conference call.
The August 10th conference call was organized and called by the White House and two federal agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for National and Community Service. The invitation to participate in the conference went to people all over the country, both inside and outside Washington, D.C., and included editors and contributors to various media outlets. Additionally, various media outlets announced themselves on the conference call. The media representation included Al Gore’s Current TV, a contributor to Huffington Post, Urb Magazine, Fader Magazine, 215 Magazine, Paper Magazine, Giant Robot, Philadelphia City Paper, Fusicology, MySpace, Global Grind, and Social Brite.
With members of the White House, public federal agencies, and broad media representation, there was no expectation of confidentiality or that the call would not be recorded by one or more of the many participants in this conference call.
As a result of my inquiry into the inappropriateness of this conference call, The National Endowment for the Arts issued a statement characterizing some of the language on the call as “unfortunately, not appropriate” and the White House admitted to some “appearance issues” related to the content of the conference call.
Maybe a better line of inquiry would be to inquire why no one from the media represented on the phone call reported on this inappropriate politicization of a federal agency.

Pat, you are writing your thoughts on both the ACORN and NEA journalism, and all of you are being attacked on the basis of the AP and Columbia pov that you are anti-party conspiritors in the old Soviet pruges. Both the Columbia CSJ and AP asume anti-party activity is sinful and criminal. You are an artist and a journalist; they are neither; you are the fourth estate, they are the party aparatchiki; you are why the 1st Amendment was written and defended, they are why the purges and gulags happened.

I'll say this, Mr. Courrielche, if you're ever near Asheville, NC, you won't need to bring any money for drinks. just let it be known you're headed this way and we'll make arrangements.
the other question to ask, is how many other calls like this are, or were there, and if "media" people were on the line, why didn't they feel like questioning this perverted use of the arts community to propagandize the nation?
i'll bet they will screnn who is on the line in the future, so they don't get caught.
I know it's been said before but I want to thank you for the courage and the conviction you have demonstrated in revealing what happened in this meeting. I'm sure that this hasn't been easy on either a personal or professional level.
On the other hand, I'm sure any time now you are going to be contacted by a major studio with an offer to buy your story. Hollywood loves to make movies about whistle blowers confronting "The Man" and I'm sure that partisan politics will certainly be put aside to tell your story…or not.
I've always hated the whole "expectation of privacy" thing. Unless we are talking about doctor-patient or lawyer-client confidentiality….It's like when you find drugs in your teenager's room, and they go, "You don't have the right to go through my stuff!" Uh, right, okay…..
What you did was illegal and you know it. I've heard someone is filing an inquiry with the AG's office in California. Expect a phone call soon, Patrick.
NICE JOB PATRICK!!!!!!
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
YOU ROCK!!!
Lol! Yes, Pat, be afraid. Be very afraid. Remember what happened to Fredo when he betrayed the Family,
But this Donkey Party tool posing as a police officer does make a good point: left-wing sophists and their allies on the bench have succeeded in corrupting the laws in this country to the point where the innocent are often punished and the guilty protected. This is true tenfold in areas dominated by leftists in government, such as California, which means you could very easily find yourself on the receiving end of a Soviet-style political prosecution. On the other hand, only the most deluded of wishful thinkers could possibly still believe, given every indicator to the contrary, that the American people are in either the malleable condition or the mood to be persuaded that the real bad guy in all of this is you, Pat.

Hmmmm… maybe it's because they have an understanding of the real situation, which is that NEA funding has been deeply politicized for decades?
And since anything the agency does is under constant scrutiny by right wing politicians – who have had a lot of success in distorting and exploiting the NEA's work purely to advance their own political agendas – a certain degree of care, caution and discretion around the handling of such sensitive material is called for?
"Maybe a better line of inquiry would be to inquire why no one from the media represented on the phone call reported on this inappropriate politicization of a federal agency."
PING, PING, PING, PING!
Only someone that lives in the bubble of the current WH would even as you why. Grant money (tax dollars) is power and as you have so courageously pointed out easy to abuse. Thank you. I wish you much success.
Here's a question you may want to ask Buffy Wicks. Watch the YouTube video of Buffy encouraging people to take part in National Service Day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkpjx0Obw-s She gives examples — paint a local school, put together packages for soldiers in Iraq, volunteer at a homeless shelter. Question — How much volunteer, unpaid service of this type has Ms. Wicks done in her life?
I would bet my hollywood dollar "not". Patrick Courrielche refers to himself as a filmmaker – check his credits. A 2004 short film, that screened once in Chicago. Google him for that matter. He wears his politics on his very loud sleeve.
Patrick Courrielche is trying to place HIMSELF in the pantheon of right wing scruntinizers.

Look at The National Parks by Ken Burns on PBS. There is a long closeup of a REPUBLICAN representative campaign literature opposed to the Grand Canyon Natl Park. Not sure whether there was any other political pitch, but noted that there was no acknowledgement that Stephen Mather and Horace Albright were also Republicans. The Rockefeller issue, whether they were Dems or Rethugs
was not ever explored because it is confusing. But that gratuitous closeup evidencet of the "Bad Republican" must have netted some big points for the PBS show.
Another thing that hacked me off earlier this year was a local Chicago show about the lakefront where Phil Ponte (i think) grimly warned that Chicago could be in danger of rising water from global warming. Two issues here: Lake Michigan levels were at historic lows in Nov 2007, and even if sea levels rise in the future, Lake Michigan is 650 feet above sea level.
The shows pitched to the elite smart people are feeding us a lot of BS.
