As a sailor on a Navy ship in the Pacific in the '80's, I can comiserate with Mr. Bean. The western ocean is anything but passive. And, as a deck ape, it didn't matter if you were seasick or not, you worked. I spent some time in the forward head, doing the Horizontal Spew with a Marine who was supposed to be guarding the Admiral. I offered him five bucks if I could borrow his pistol to shoot myself. (I promised to give it right back after I was done.)
Up on the bridge, manning the helm or the lee-helm, I would watch the Captain, a drawling Texan, who was suceptable to food-flux himself. He would sit in his chair, giving orders, filling out reports, confering with the Quartermaster, then, on occasion, lean over a wastepaper basket with a plastic garbage bag in it, allow his most recent meal to pass in review, rinse out his mouth and go back to work. As an enlisted man on the bridge, I was not afforded that luxury. You just didn't puke. Or to be more precise…you better not puke, mister!
