Questioning Joe Biden’s ‘Corny’ Patriotism
by Ned RiceFor those of you who take it as an article of faith that Dan Quayle was the dumbest, most out-of-touch vice president who ever served this nation, I’m afraid I have some bad news for you.
Yesterday, Independence Day, Vice President Joe Biden attended a naturalization ceremony at Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq. During the ceremony 237 U.S. servicemen from 59 countries, including Iraq, were sworn in as citizens of the United States of America. At the conclusion of this solemn, undoubtedly moving and inspirational occasion, and in the presence of his own son Beau (currently serving in the 261st Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, Delaware Army National Guard), this is what the Vice President of the United States had to say: ”As corny as it sounds,” he told the troops, “Damn, I’m proud to be an American!”
Where to begin?
OK, if you were really proud to be an American, Mr. Vice President, you wouldn’t find it necessary to preface that declaration with the words, “as corny as it sounds”. If you were really proud to be an American those words wouldn’t sound corny to you. Then again, if you were really proud to be an American you wouldn’t be serving under a President who spent his last trip overseas apologizing to the world on behalf of America. You wouldn’t be serving under a President who either doesn’t recognize or simply doesn’t understand the concept of American exceptionalism. You wouldn’t, it could be reasonably argued, be a member of the current Democrat Party.
Joe Biden is known in Democratic circles as a “shoot-from-the-hip” type of guy, which means he’s known for shooting his mouth off on subjects he knows nothing about without the slightest regard for where he is or who he’s speaking to. You might say that’s his trademark, along with the serial plagiarism and the hair plugs. Well, yesterday’s outburst was vintage Biden. It simply never occurred to America’s Number Two (as he’s known around my house) that it might be sort of…oh, I don’t know, moronic?…to stand up in front of hundreds of U.S. soldiers in a combat theater and tell them you think it’s corny to feel proud of your country. Then again, Biden knows virtually nothing about the military despite his (much boasted-about) service on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as any English-speaking adult who’s analyzed Biden’s, uh, “thoughts” on Iraq could tell you. Like Vice President Dick Cheney (who I’m sure doesn’t think it’s corny to be proud to be an American), Vice President Biden sought and was granted five military deferments during the Vietnam War. So like Senator Barbara Boxer, who recently scolded a brigadier general for (correctly and properly, as it turns out) addressing her as “M’am”, Biden might be forgiven for the stupidity of today’s remarks on the grounds that’s he’s simply ignorant of military culture. Which I guess would be something else for him not to be proud of. Then again, it could be worse. Michelle Obama only started being proud of her country about a year and a half ago, and she’s the First Lady!
But let’s say a reasonable person might, under certain circumstances, be feeling somewhat reticent, somewhat bashful about a full-throated declaration of pride in being an American. Like, say, after visiting the Bill Clinton Presidential Library or attending a deceased senator’s memorial service with Al Franken or something like that. OK, fair enough. Personally I don’t get it, but I suppose that, in some hypothetical situation, the words, “I’m proud to be an American” might strike some hypothetical person as being somewhat corny. But if there’s one person, in one scenario, who should never, ever feel that it’s corny to be proud to be an American, it would be:
- The Vice President of the United States.
- Surrounded by hundreds of U.S. servicemen and women.
- Who have just become U.S. citizens.
- In a war zone.
- On Independence Day.
- You stupid moron, you.
So on this July the Fourth weekend, please take a moment to contemplate the implications of Joe Biden’s casual, unscripted (thus, highly revealing) thoughts on what it means to him to be an American. And after careful consideration if you still think an arrogant, grinning, eye-blinking, speech-stealing simpleton like Joe Biden is qualified to be Vice President of the United States– and Sarah Palin is not!– I’d love to hear from you in care of this website.
As for the rest of you: at the risk of sounding too corny, happy Independence Day to you all, and may God continue to bless the United States of America.

That Biden would say this is not surprising. That he would spit it out in front of those who put their lives on the line because they're proud of America (in part) points to how politically tone-deaf Biden is.

When I see Biden and hear what he says the first thing that comes to mind is Colonel Klink. That's not a crack comparing him to nazis, but a smiling, overly friendly,( to the people's ass he's kissing) blow hard who's only source of self-esteem is the rank he's managed to somehow blunder into. He acts important without realizing that he's viewed as a buffoon.

While Col Klink, was a First War Veteran, who really didn't want to be any where near the thugs. that were running Germany at the time. Is not real in any sense, Vice President Biden is real and he is part of the Government. Sad as it maybe the American People elected a fellow who on his best day could not be trusted to run a 7/11, that is the fact of the matter. As painful as it is and what is going on in the country, The only thing that is going to fix this, is for them to lose enough seats in the mid term election to give them pause. The damage that is being done right now will take a couple of generations to clean up, and its only been six months.

Obama is a neophyte, confused, and conflicted. However, he's a master at using people. Joe is being used as a foil…he give the American public someone to laugh at, but for really serious matters, the fawning hoards then turn to Barry.
Also, Biden probably knows where a lot of skeletons are locked away, so he gives Obama some maneuverability. The thing that is most disgusting to me is that Joe knows all this, and goes along with it. Based on the simple fact that he accepted the job, we can infer that he actually likes being a puppet. There's a simple fact that underlies this. The world, including more than half the population of the Formerly United States, does indeed think it's corny to be proud to be an American.
Those people hate the ideas that the United States represents. Among other things, they are working very hard to assure that those who gave their lives for Iraqi Freedom shall indeed have died in vain.

Americans have become champions of focusing on the ridiculous. We wring our hands over the many failings of Sarah Palin whose impact on our lives is minimal at best, while ignoring the growing list of faults attributable to the man who is but a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Conservatives are so good at questioning liberal's patriotism because it is so darn easy. Pretty much everything the anti-war left crowd said during both Afghanistan and Iraq could not have given more aid and comfort to Al Queda than if it had been specifically intended for that purpose. Which is why it is only natural to wonder if that was, in fact, it's actual purpose.
We have to thank Obama for returning the VP slot back to "not worth a warm bucket of spit" and giving it to Joe.

I don't think Joe Biden is very bright, but I do think he is a patriot. But he's also a man of the Left. If you're on the Left, and you're one of the few who love, love, love your country, you are still not allowed to say so without a qualifier of some sort. I would hope so but with a press completely deserting its responsibility of reporting and asserting it 1st Amendment rights and responsibility of unbiased reporting I am not optimistic. The press is entirely at the beckoning of Obama and the Dems otherwise the bills never read by our legislators like the Stimulus and Cap and Trade would have been by this time savaged by a responsible press. As designated by the Cap and Trade can you imaging the power and potential excess and confusion and abuse of a government inspector granting you permission to selling your home dependent upon a constantly changing environmentally accepted window. That the press remains silent is proof positive of their capitulation.

I think Biden's comment says more about the people he hangs out with than it does about his own supposed patriotism. He had to apologize for being proud of America, because everyone on his team thinks that this country is something to be ashamed of.
