Letter to Congress Regarding the Latest Obama Outrage Against Veterans

Dear Senator Feinstein/Senator Boxer/Rep. Jane Harmon,
I am writing you today regarding President Obama’s recent proposal to charge U.S. combat veterans (through their insurance carriers) for treatment received as a result of injuries suffered on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.
I have been a close observer of the political scene for some years now and I have never heard a more outrageous, indefensible and utterly un-American idea as this one– and I’m not even a veteran. The fact that President Obama would seriously consider such a notion speaks volumes about his stunning lack of understanding of, and respect for, America’s deepest-held military traditions. The fact that such a heinous proposal would even see the light of day is a chilling indictment of the entire Obama administration and its agenda for this nation.
I know you to be a decent person so I take it you are as opposed to this obscenity as passionately as I am. But in this instance mere disagreement with the President is not enough. I respectfully ask, in the strongest possible language, that you take a very public, very vocal stand against this abomination at your earliest opportunity. If you choose not to do so I will have no choice but to speak out, volunteer, canvas, donate, and phone bank on behalf of your opponent in the next election, as well as use any influence I have as a member of the print and broadcast media towards their electoral victory. I mean that not as a threat but as a measure of how very strongly I feel about this vital issue. I have been to Walter Reed Hospital and met the brave men and women whose maimed bodies bear living witness to their courage and love of country. I hope you agree that, regardless of current budgetary or economic considerations, the very idea of presenting these real-life American heroes with a bill for their combat-related medical care is simply unthinkable.
Thank you for your time. I know you will do the right thing concerning this issue.

Amen! This is one of Obama's most abominable propositions. It is what I would believe constitutional heresy to be. How disrespectful can a person be to the troops that are fighting for democracy. Let's just kick 'em while they are down. What a load of rubbish!

THIS is where the government needs to save money? This is the best way that jug-geared idiot can come up with to fund his outrageous "stimulous" and bailout crap? This is so completely offensive, I can't believe he would have the nerve to suggest such a thing.
Nice letter. This proposal is really despicable. These people were hurt serving their countries and now they're supposed to pay to take care of those injuries? This is utterly contemptible.
As little as I think of President Hopey, I almost can't believe that he would even consider this as an option. Even a lowly baby kissing fake politician (which is what he seems to become more and more) would see something like this as politcal suicide. Passing something like this would ensure that we would have a new president in 2012, but it would be at a very unfair and un-American cost that our Veterans would have to pay.
I agree. So we have money for lazy union guys. We have money for greedy bankers. We have money to "bail out" every silly little pet project the Democrats can think of (from mob museums to contraceptives) but we can't take care of the people who were hurt protecting our country?
Why bother taking care of them? The country isn't in danger. We're fighting illegal wars all over the world that we have no business in, dontcha know. Serves them right for getting wounded in the first place. That seems to be the message from the Prez, anyway. Maybe if he makes them pay for the privilege of getting wounded for keeping our country free, people will stop being idiots and won't join up in the first place. Think of all the money we can save by having a much smaller military force, or better yet, no miltary at all!
Mass outrage in the streets is just around the corner. Let's make this the summer of loud, vocal, sharp elbowed discontent in the streets of D.C. and at the homes and offices of Dem and RINO turncoats in our midsts. Of course they'll be vacationing in the Hamptons and Europe, but where possible these people must see the anger.

I can see him doing it because his budget numbers make no sense. He needs to find money from anywhere he can. And they're going to try to sell this as, "it's only money from insurance companies, we aren't charging the veterans themselves." They will conveniently ignore the increased premium costs (assuming private insurance is even still available at that point).
With policies like this a revolt becomes more and more possible as our military will become less and less willing to defend the politicians that slight them at every turn.
Don't forget Andrew, we have the money to pay for Pelosi's plush new jet, which we all agree is a must for the wicked witch since her broom isn't good enough for her anymore. It is beyond insulting to our brave men and women who VOLUNTEER to protect this great country of ours. Before the election my father warned me about what the obamation would do to the United States and as usual he was spot on. The dummycr@ps want to destroy our country and they're well on their way to doing it. If we don't stand up and revolt we will seriously loose the freedoms we have enjoyed for the past 200 years.
Not to sound too geeky, here, but there was an episode of Battlestar Galactica a while back in which a divisive reporter, hoping to discredit the military, talks to Adama (the great Edward James Olmos) about his treatment of the pilots:

Lee Adama: Actually, I do. Like everyone else, my pilots have lost their families, their friends, everyone they ever cared about; but on top of that they're asked to put their lives on the line every single day, for a fleet that seems more interested in what they do wrong than in what they do right. They're not asking for your pity, but they damn well deserve your respect.
Change "pilots" to "soldiers" and "fleet" to "media and liberal politicians", and you've got a pretty accurate statement about the current treatment of US troops.
I gotta wonder, will the majority of Americans remain in Obama's camp after this atrocity? How can anyone see this as a good thing? (Anyone outside of the Obama administration, but it seems increasingly obvious that to work in the Obama administration you have to be crazy, and criminal.)
Very true, because when the insurance companies increase premiums, then they can be cast as the bad guys. But as dim as much of the American electorate can be, I don't think this would get past most people. If he passes this thing, it means he wants to be a one term president.

I thought he was suppose to be "the smartest man in the world." But even with every dishonorable thing he has done thus far, I would never have thought him fool enough to even suggest something like this. I guess this country (the half that voted him in anyway) is getting the "kick in the rear" it needs to wake up; but at such a high price to our veterans who have already paid dearly for this nation.
You all are not thinking big enough. This is not just about a distain for the military it is also about getting the socialist health care system he wants. If you force the private insurance industry to cover injuries received in war you WILL bankrupt them. Then there will be no choice except goveernment healthcare.

My opinion? He's hoping he can discourage people from joining any military branch – thus decreasing the military budget unilateraly. Which also meets his eventual goal of no longer having a military presence other than those dispersed through the UN. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

My sister is in the AF ROTC at a local university hoping to become an intelligence officer when she commissions in two years. About once a week they get word of a new budget cut from the current "administration". I always apologize to her in the following manner: "I'm sorry your country has failed you and your peers, I will do my best to change that for you in 4 years." When I heard about Barry's new proposal concerning our wounded heroes, I felt ill and I felt embarrassed that this intolerably disrespectful man was the Commander and Chief. I don’t think I could ever apologize enough if this thing actually goes anywhere.
Amazing what governments and bureaucrats do to soldiers. In WWII, Canada charged dead soldiers $1.00 for the blanket used to bury them in. How? Easy. Take it off their last paycheque. Nice.

I am a Retired First Sergeant . I spent 20 years in the US Army and for the past 10 years I have worked as a Army Contractor where I work with our great soldiers each and every day. I am 48 years old and pretty much all of my adult life has been dedicated to this way of life and cause. You can't make stuff like this up. I can walk outside this minute and I am sure within 5 minutes I can find a soldier who is limping, hurting, or recovering from the wounds he or she has as a result of defending our nation. How do you explain what you do not understand? I sure as Hell ! do not understand this one….
This is his way of trying to justify his health care plan. Then he can say "Well if wounded soldiers get provided health care then we should provide it for all." We can't allow this charade!

This is pathetic. As a nation, we spend a lot of money on so many things. And I'm upset that I cant pay my medical bills on my low salary!?! Puts things into perspective! I think every government employee and all Americans should take a pay cut to sacrifice for the good of the country. I'd take a pay to cut to lower the deficit and pay for wounded troops.

Recall the Chosen One's calling for a Civilian Military Force, and if I remember correctly, the Messiah stated that he believed that his personal Brown Shirt militia should be "just as powerful" as the US Military. The current administration and their supporters now own the White House, the House, the Senate, Unions, the Media, etc. But the one institution they don't own and/or control is the military. With full control of a military or para-military force, these fascists really will be in total control, and then…then…???
What better way to begin chipping away at the military than to scare off any/all potential recruits? When US Military recruitment falls off to nothing, Chancellor Obama will call for his National Civilian SS Force – and he'll get it.

Obama Bought The Presidency
I guess this will be the final fulfillment of my sojourn in San Francisco. From the summer of love (for) to the Viet Nam war (against) to the Gulf War (for) and the Iraq War (for), I've taken to the streets (although less so in these later years, too busy making a living and raising kids). This time we're takin' it to the streets to let Obama know that he's not just full of crap, he's a dangerous, anti-American fascist. Viva la revolucion.
I covered a House Veterans' Affairs committee hearing on the VA budget, and I wanted to applaud Rep. Michael Michaud (D-Maine) when he said this was "unconscionable." The other representatives who talked about it felt the same way, so there may be hope. (And I don't mean Obama's type of hope. I mean the real thing.)

I heard hints about this story yesterday and am pretty sure I caught a glimpse of it over on another conservative blog. Then Rush was discussing it on his show today, as well as highlight the hypocrisy of the current First Lady and her alleged caring and understanding. Rush was not only blasting this new Obama plan, but that FL Michelle says that — like all Americans — she knows little about military life and hopes to learn. Rush fired back that many Americans already are aware. He's right. I don't live in a fantasy world of corruption like Chicago, and I'm not living inside the Beltway Bubble, but you would think she and her husband had more sense than this. What am I saying? Of course they don't! It's why I didn't vote for either of them.

The thought that the man currently bearing the title of POTUS is so disgraceful that this even crossed his mind is beyond wicked, is beyond abominable. However, what can I expect from someone with his abortion opinions? Just when I think I've heard it all, we get this. But knowing this man and his disgusting behavior, I wouldn't be surprised if he suggested the families of those who die in service to their nation be made to pay for the transport back home!

Does private health insurance even cover injuries in a war zone? I know private LIFE insurance is void if the holder is killed in a war zone.
I think this is part of the 3 million jobs scam: a new agency will have to be created to BILL the insurance companies for services at the VA hospitals. That'll rack up at least 100,000 jobs – using Obama-math.

After reading the article I decided to write a letter in the contact option for the white house as well..Here it goes "Dear Mr. President I am a recently honorbly discharged U.S. Army Combat Veteran who has done two combat tours in Iraq. I am writing you this message today regarding your proposal to charge us, the combat veterans, airmen, soldiers, marines, sailors and coast guardsmen veterans for injuries that we incurred, loss of sight, limb, not to mention emotional trauma (through our insurance carriers) for treatments that any one of us would get as result of what i had just mentioned. I have never been a conservative, or liberal or moderate. I am an American, and I sacrificed myself for this country, not for fame, fortune or recognition, but to give back to it for what it gave me as I am an emmigrant from Ukraine whose family came to the states in 1992 with nothing and the opprotunity this country had given me and my family to prosper and start anew. For us few who did sign up and volunteer we had given up our daily comforts, left wives, husbands and children behind accepting the heavy burden, that is why we chose to do it. I was not forced to.
Why is anyone surprised by this? Obama has proven his conservative critics right. He's a liberal fool surrounded by other liberal fools who despise the military so this idea makes sense to them. Also interesting to the poll data showing that Obama is at 59% and that many Americans believe he listens more to liberals in his party. Their beginning to figure out they were had by the media who sold them a lemon.

I signed the dotted line knowing full well the dangers I will face. I joined the Army when I was 18 Years Old. I was In Iraq when I was 19 and had my 20th Birthday there. Now 5 years and two tours later I am saddened and mad at the same time that the government that I swore to uphold and protect would cut corners to save money while splurging unfathomed amounts of money towards bailouts and big corporations. I understand the burdens must be enormous, and the challenges great. But for the sake of us that gave our service to this great country I ask you to reconsider. I am lucky to have comeback home alive and well after what I had faced in Iraq, some of my friends were not as lucky and each day I remember their sacrifices. Please don't forget them or those of us who were shot, bleed and forever changed either. Don't overburden us anymore then what we already face. There is no feeling worse then to be betrayed by one's own government. I ask you to reconsider, and I thank you at the same time for reading this letter. I do not expect a reply, but I at least hope that you weigh your thoughts on what you will do next, and make the right choice.

Worker's comp laws vary by state, but I am not aware of any state that extends coverage to military members. Active duty, dependents and retirees get civilian care through Tricare. Injured veterans qualify for treatment by the Veterans Administration — a disgrace of epic proportions.
I just got back from Iraq last March… I shudder to think that prior to that deployment I would have to carry in battle the extra burden of what a combat related injury would do to my family and I financially. Is it a worry that soldier should take into combat???? I feel betrayed as I face another combat deployment, this time to Afghanistan. I am heartbroken. I really can't think of another term. I don't care that this proposal not been to Congress.Just the thought that my Commander and Chief could utter those henious words.

You have to report the injury immediately and get evaluated by the company's doctor, and you can also see your own. I had to get a laywer involved to get fairly compensated, and I was out of work for months. It sucked. Would hate to have to go through that for shrapnel wounds, amputations and PTSD. Does anyone see this as yet another insidious move to push us towards socialized healthcare? Forcing private insurance companies to pay for combat injuries will raise premiums for all of us, which will increase the number of uninsured (not to mention the fact that the veterans will easily hit the lifetime maximum under their insurance policy which will then leave the veteran and his/her family without insurance), therefore providing even more fodder for this administration's socialized healthcare agenda. I am nauseated. He is even worse than I feared.

If he was merely an a**hole that would be something but I think his divisiveness runs much deeper. I believe that he and his wife both genuinely hate the US of A. His wife said as much already and from the things I've seen him do I can not honestly say that Obama doesn't hate this country as well.

Um, we already are taxed for our training…normal federal income tax on our income. What will happen next is that our allowances for food and housing will become taxable (sorry if someone has already brought this up…only got this far in the comments so far). For some, that'll increase their salary by $2000 or more a month…great source of tax money.
Then, they'll privatize barracks, give the young enlisted guys housing allowance, which they'll immediately surrender. Again, with the housing allowance taxable, this'll bring in more income tax.
Just some ideas of how this administration can further screw the military.
I agreed with everything you said in your post except the last line. No matter what anyone thinks of our military, I can tell you there is not one leader in any service who would become involved in a coup.
What you'd see, instead, is a mass retirement by scores of generals…that is how the upper leadership in the military shows their loss of confidence in their commander in chief.

1) Cradle to grave healthcare died, sadly, with the generation of WWII and Korea vets. NO ONE in the military now gets cradle to grave healthcare. Retiress have to pay for Tricare, if they even want it. Theoretically, retirees can go to a military hospital and go on the wait list, but they have no guarantee of being seen. And even if they are, their Tricare or private insurance would be charged. The military gets free medical care while they are on active duty, and that is it.

2) No one in the military gets free clothing, short of select uniform items that are required for duty, like flight suits, maintenance jump suits, helmets, etc. Everyone in the military pays for their uniforms. When you go to basic training, your initial uniform allowance, which totals over a $1000, gets deducted from your pay. Then, later, you get a one-time initial allowance of about $700 (enlisted) and $200 (officer). Every year after, the enlisted get a uniform maintenance allowance of around $300. Officers don't get that. All told, the money barely covers everything you need. For example: Set of BDUs, boots, cover, belts, socks, patches and tailoring/sewing will run you close to $200. And you need at least four pairs, especially if you spend your days crawling around and wearing out knees.

3) Housing benefits. Well, if you live on base, you surrender your housing allowance. If you're willing to surrender more than $2000 a month to live in 40 year old housing, that is.
4) Burial: It costs the American public a pittance to bury a veteran. For most, local military folks volunteer to conduct the funeral. As far as I know from my limited exposure to this, I don't think the family is charged for the flag.
Oh, and FYI, you are probably supporting, through sales tax, the medical care of firemen and policemen in your city.

The NY Times is reporting that this plan has been scrapped. It actually states that Barack Obama heeded the concerns of veterans' groups. BS! He heeded the Senators that told Shinseki this idea was DOA when it showed up on their desks.
I cant imagine anyone would stand behind this…hopefully enough outrage has been heard.
Obama wasn't trying to get veterans to pay for their own health care. If they had private insurance (through a spouse, for example), the plan was for the VA to bill the insurance companies for service-related issues, a very bad idea. They evidently already do this for non-service-related conditions. But if you don't have private insurance, none of this would occur. The VA will take care of the veteran entirely. The proposal was never about having the veteran pay for care out of pocket.
We should keep in mind that the Bush administration's budget proposals for the V.A. (& I have logged in over 8000 hours as a volunteer at Maine's V.A. hospital since 1994) were consistantly under funding level that verterans' groups – and V.A. officials – indicated was needed…less than relevant Congressional committees were recommending. Bush was even charging vets recovering from service-related injuries in V.A. hospitals for the meals they were served. Another reason I'm an ex-Republican.
