If your grandfather is a WWII veteran, then please check out The Greatest Generations Foundation www.tggf.us They were responsible for getting many of the Market Garden vets to Holland that Michael Yon met and photographed there.

What an informative and touching post. I find the Taliban and alQruda to be reminiscent of the Japanese in China during WWII but with the whole Islam wants to wipe out the Jews it does take me back to the Nazis. Either way, for Obambi to walk away from AfPak now is tantamount to turning the planes around for Market Garden. How can the leader of the free world ignore the tenuous continuing freedom of 50 million muslims started by GWB? Regardless of the Socialist committee leader, I hope the Nobel prize is used to recognize the rights of those liberated from Sharia law compliant states to open societies with no more slavery. Imagine.

That was intense! My heart is still racing thinking of the White Corolla closing in on you...wondering what it would be like to be at that moment when you would either kill or be killed so far from home. Wow. Thank God I live in America! God Bless you and all the soldiers now and throughout our history for fighting for this country!

There is a rapidly dwindling group of wonderful old guys who took part in Market Garden that also need to be remembered. Here is a link to the National WWII Glider Pilots Association. They had one the highest casualty rates of any combat MOS during WWII and have rarely gotten the credit they were due. They usually stayed with the units they flew in until the lines stabilized and they could be withdrawn. Take a moment to review their operations. If you are ever in Lubbock, Texas, you can also visit their "Silent Wings Museum" and see a restored glider, an incredibly fragile craft that was the spiritual predecessor to the chopper.

I wish I could have been there. I just retired from the Navy and I have traveled all over the world. The best part is meeting the older retirees. The have the most interesting stories. You find them all over. I love running into them and I can't wait to get back on the trail.

The sand box isn't gonna get any better and it doesn't seem like Obama is taking this seriously. I'm headed down south to the LAT myself. Stay safe Yon. Don't get shot.

As a former USN sailor, I try to keep up my heritage by volunteering to do repair work to a WWII battleship memorial and also as a member of a living history group. The living history gig involves interacting with people as if we are back in WWII times, trying to impart life from that period.

We also do an annual reunion/memorial service for the actual WWII veterans. For 10 years now, I have watched the number of these heroes dwindle, slipping away like the last few grains of sand in an hourglass.

May the dear Lord cherish them all for ever.
