Rep. Thaddeus McCotter: Real-Life Walt Kowalski
by Michael S. Rulle Jr.Polish American Walt Kowalski, played to anti-hero perfection by Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino, stands against corruption and lawlessness and wins. But not before sacrificing his life. Kowalski is a Korean War veteran and retired auto worker living outside of Detroit. He is old and tired, and just wants to be left alone after the death of his wife. But fate and duty had other ideas. He carries a long held guilt over killing a surrendering soldier in the Korean War. His death redeems, not just his soul, but the soul of his town.
Events lead Kowalski to resist a local takeover by a Hmong youth gang. The Hmong are an ethnic Southeast Asian people, primarily from Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. In real life Michigan, they are among the fastest growing immigrants. Many Hmong people emigrated from South Vietnam after Democrats shamelessly withdrew monetary support from South Vietnam in 1974. The Paris Peace Agreements thus became toothless and North Vietnam conquered South Vietnam. “Boat people” fled Vietnam and the insane, murderous Pol Pot created the Cambodian Killing Fields.
Gran Torino can be viewed as metaphorical microcosm of the Vietnamese conflict with an alternate ending. Eastwood, the quintessential symbol of American independence and strength, helps defend a group of Asian Americans against a gangster group of other Asian Americans. Kowalski’s courage and independence led to his death and the defeat of the gang members. The image of protagonist Thao Vang Lor (Bee Vang) driving in Kowalski’s Gran Torino, left to Thao in his will, cements the “good Hmongs” victory, and ultimate commitment to America. The juxtaposition of this scene, versus Kowalski’s children trying to unload him in an old age home is striking.
Another morality play is occurring today in the real Michigan. Michigan has a 15% unemployment rate. Detroit’s auto industry, which made the 1972 Ford Gran Torino, has been decimated in large part by federal regulations. In classic “anti-comparative advantage” style, a sclerotic EPA required individual auto companies to meet mandated “CAFE” standards. Even if one wanted the nation’s entire car fleet to meet CAFE requirements on average, the EPA implemented it in the most inefficient way possible.
US automakers’ comparative advantage was in SUVs and small trucks. To keep their fleet within mandated averages, they were forced to build unprofitable, uncompetitive small cars. If the Feds just let comparative advantage work, the US auto fleet would have likely met federal CAFE standards without each company being compelled to build every type of car. But Government does not know economics. They simply know better.
Obama’s “new environmental energy plan,” the Waxman-Markey “Cap and Trade” bill, is a ruse. It is not an energy bill, but a regressive consumption tax in disguise. It is favored by Wall Street, George Soros, Al Gore, GE and other corporatists looking for subsidies paid for by the tax payer. Cap and Trade is the ultimate economic destruction machine. The bill passed the House of Representatives this summer by six votes, 219-213. Forty-four Democrats voted against it. The Senate has not yet voted.
Michigan Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, a real life political “Kowalski” and GOP Policy Committee Chair, opposed this monstrosity. He is among a group of opponents being targeted for attack in the next few weeks. Others include House Minority Whip Eric Cantor and Missouri’s Roy Blount. The campaigns are funded by Soros’ groups MoveOn.Org and Americans United for Change. The attack is preposterous, as this video shows (Groups target GOP on cap-and-trade). What is the goal of the bill?
The goal of the bill is to replace cheap energy with expensive energy. This is called “saving the environment.” This is accomplished by requiring consumers to purchase more expensive electricity, biomass power for example, while also paying taxes to subsidize these enterprises. As we consume more expensive energy, the same amount of labor and capital creates less output. Even if one believed the ridiculous 1.7 million “green job” increase advertised, it doesn’t factor the lost jobs from lower productivity and higher energy costs. The manufacturing heavy states and big users of energy, like Michigan, are clearly poised to be the big losers in such legislation. They are already seeking “exemptions” from regulations because of the bill’s potential economic devastation (Michigan Economic Impact on the State from the Waxman-Markey Bill).
Meanwhile, Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs, and self important financial traders like George Soros, strongly support this legislation because they get to buy and sell “CO2 credits.” The rationale is this legislation will combat “global warming.” Climatologist Chip Knappenberger estimates the best case impact of the bill would be to lower global temperature by “0.1″ degree centigrade in the year 2100. This bill does not address global warming. The bill’s costs exceed its “benefits” by a factor of at least ten, using the UN’s officially approved climate models. This means lost jobs and/or lost real income. This is also why Greenpeace joined with pro-growth conservatives and opposed it. The whole thing is a sham.
So why do Democrats want this bill? They want to raise your taxes under the cover of “climate change” reform. It also gives Government the power to decide which industries get benefited more heavily than others. It is part of the transformation from a free society to a government controlled society. This is yet another highway toward the ultimate c goal of centralized government planning.
McCotter understands, like Walter Kowalski, what it means to be an American. A great American can be a first generation “Hmong” from Vietnam, like Gran Torino’s Thao Vang Lor. Conversely, a treasonous American can be born in Chicago to great advantage, like Weatherman terrorist and Obama supporter Bill Ayers. This speech by Congressman McCotter provides a very clear vision of what America is and should be about. Let’s not permit anti-American fakes, like George Soros, sacrifice McCotter’s (or Cantor’s or Blount’s) “political life” by trying to pull the wool over our eyes. “Green jobs” are a wolf’s tax in sheep’s clothing.

We need McCotter to run for president.
The left is advancing in a head long front, using combined arms type maneuvers and tactics. They have left their flanks open and unguarded. We now have the perfect tactical situation for a pincher maneuver. We must not let this opportunity pass.
No kidding, Bill.
McCotter's the man
Great piece, Mike. I would dare say that we are all becoming Walt Kowalskis these days. Guess who the Hmong gangs are?
Perfect comparison and great explanation of Cap and Trade, in English and everything. McCotter makes me want to move to Michigan. Please be my leader, Thad McHotter.
He's young. He definitely has the potential.
Thaddeus McCotter has the potential of becoming a political superstar. Not only would he make a great president but his press conferences would be so highly entertaining it would be standing room only.
Come on mid-term elections! They can't get here soon enough!
Uhh, dude? Haven't seen the movie yet. Thanks for the spoiler in the first paragraph. Much appreciated.
Although I watch Red Eye fairly regularly, I really look forward to the ones TMC is on, just so I can "Welcome Back McCotter." No, really, his banter with Gutfeld is classic stuff.
I saw McCotter on a Red Eye segment and instantly wanted him to run for President…he would be the best Republican that we've had run since Reagan…and at his rally's he could play a mini-concert. Forget Bill Clinton and his sax…VOTE McCOTTER 2012!!
LOL @ Thad McHotter!!
He's definitely working hard to bring the east side of our state up to speed with us west siders.
Jennifer,
McCotter was my congressman, and losing him was the only regret I have in moving to Ohio (other than I miss my family). It's not worth the pain—moving to MI. But support the honorable congressman with emails and cash if you can.
Kit in Ohio, formerly MIchigan
We have the same problem in Washington. 2 ultra blue counties control the whole state.
I bet he's good dancer.
I knew the end too. Still well worth seeing.
you are truly stupid–or funny—which is it?
I have hope. Our current governor and the former mayor of Detroit screwed things up so much that Detroit is steadily becoming another ghost town, slowly draining this state of it's leftist voters.
When he ran for congress the first time, he had a fun tv spot in which he and his wife joked about his lack of hair; I've talked to his mom, who is a neat lady, and he is an alumni of a Jesuit Catholic High School in metro Detroit (my brother was his classmate) where he was known even then for being an incredibly bright guy.
McCotter 2012!
Somebody say otter?
I had the opportunity to meet and speak with him a few years ago, and he is even more engaging and impressive in person than in his stirring speeches.
You got that right!
McCotter and the other Reps. you mentioned, simply need to espouse conservative ideals and the rest will take care of itself. The Republican party needs to separate itself from the Beltway. Recommit to the American Constitution and it’s people, and stupid statist ideas like Cap-n-Tax will vaporize, and traitorous basturds like Soros can be jailed at the very least kicked out of affairs in the USA. McCotter is a great guy, but he is one.
Thanks on the Cap and Trade compliment!
Thaddeus is the Rep from my district and he's a great guy.
If you haven't seen Thaddeus's how to speak democrat video….

Do we know what kinds of *things* they're planning to do as they target these certain reps? We must continue to stand firm. The silent majority is silent NO MORE! We will protect our guys! Steve – I'm in McCotter's district too. We are lucky!
Considering the dynamic duo of Senators Levin and Stabenow, our wonderful Governor Granholm we are lucky to have McCotter.
After reading this article, I viewed several clips of Rep. McCotter on YouTube and I gotta say, nothing about him skeeves me out, or makes me think, "Ugh, what a politician." That doesn't mean this is my final judgment of the guy, but so far I like him. When he speaks he not only speaks well, he says things. And the things he says make sense. Is it too much to hope for that this guy is for real? I mean, his name is THADDEUS MCCOTTER, which is the awesomest name since, I dunno, Marty McFly. Is he too good to be true?
He impresses the hell out of me, and I'd like to see him run.
But.
This is the modern era, and if you don't look good on TV, you're dead. McCotter has a great mind and heart, but he, to be blunt, looks funny. Therefore, no Presidency.
Sad but true.

A few years ago McCotter did everything in his power as a state legislator to prevent the state from investigating corruption in Wayne County – a county he represents – and particularly the Ed McNamara administration, for fraud at the Detroit metro airport. Don't fool yourselves. This spineless man is about as much a Walt Kowalski as Barack Obama.
Thad McCotter is one of a large number of rising articulate, attractive conservative leaders (Palin, Jindal, Kantor, Pawlenty just to name a few) within the ranks of the GOP. If some of the tired old bulls like McCain, Lugar, and Hatch would just get out of the way and let them take the lead, there could be a 100-seat shift in the 2010 elections.
Please try to remember the younger George(new name)Soros and his father were Nazi sympathizers in occupied Hungary.
Thanks a lot for the spoiler warning (NOT). Some of us haven't actually seen the movie yet.
Would it have been so hard to consider that?
Hey, if grown up Urkle post-lasik surgery can win, McCotter can.
How about GA Senator Saxby Chambliss (even cooler when Neal Boortz says it)…I'd throw Dick Army up there too but that's what Perez Hilton named one of his wet dreams.
Mr.McCotter is a sometime guest for regular political roundtable discussions on the John Batchelor Show out of NYC's WABC-AM 770 , usually on Sunday nights. Since I started tuning in on the net, I've found myself looking forward to his wit and willingness to be blunt when he could easily soften his commentary. I appreciate someone who doesn't seem to trade in B.S. Would that there be more people like him to support for public office.
I think Greenpeace opposes the bill because it doesn't go far enough to combat 'global warming'. I wouldn't align with Greenpeace in opposition when the reasons for opposition are opposite.
Also, I have to agree with the lack of a spoiler alert. I haven't seen the movie yet either.
It's advertising like this which contributed to Michigan's other Republican congressmen their seats. Let's hope people have enough sense not to believe the junk being spewed by all these outside interest groups! However, it's Michigan we're talking about- the same state that elected Jennifer Granholm and Debbie Stabenow twice- and I have no doubt these interest groups and the powerful unions will do all they can to eject McCotter. I hope that's not the case, but Michigan doesn't seem to have a lot of sense these days- especially because people with some sense are leaving in droves.
McCotter is such a good speaker. He destroyed Chris Matthews on Hardball(regarding the Henry Gates incident) with his simple, plain spoken style, just using the facts and refusing to be rattled by Matthews attacks.(which imploded — it's GREAT) I hope I get the chance to vote for McCotter one day on the national ticket. He really seems genuine.
UNILATERAL ECONOMIC DISARMAMENT is what Cap and Trade legislation is equivalent to.
TMC is brilliant on Dennis Miller Zone and RedEye. I was so impressed with him I e-mailed his office to tell him. He sent me a handwritten card thanking me for my words of support. I live in Oklahoma in a Republican district. He has got my support and energies if he ever runs for President. I was a registered dem b4 2008 election (voted 4 McCain/Palin). b.o. just didnt smell right after I heard his preacher of 20 years. And as a union ironworker I can say alot of my brother ironworkers smell the same thing we're stepping in.
I'm from Detroit and I actually know one of the Hmong extras in the movie… he works for one of my clients. Used to be a gang-banger and cleaned his life up, has a wife and kid now. Covered with tattoos though… and he was once in prison for attempted murder. Hell of a good guy and a good worker too.
One wonders what Soros has against the US. One also wonders why anyone cares what this famous thief has to say about morality and what is right. He is lucky he is not in jail.
I just recently saw a bunch of vids claiming that Hmong are being hunted down and destroyed. it was a left-leaning site from what I saw. I would guess that it is just a wag the dog process to encourage the incidents here.
All those people who have moved to Tx will have nowhere else to go if this bill is fully passed. Cap and Trade will DECIMATE the oil industry, and if you think you can live in a world without oil, think again. It isnt just gas in our car, its plastics and chemicals needed for our every day lives. Plastics are used in hospitals to save lives. Tx has been doing so well because we have in large part the engineering industry that fuels the economy here…but if this passes…unemployment will rip through us like a hot knife through butter.
***SPOILER ALERT!****
That should be the header of the article.
Right on. I met him too, the most down to earth guy I've met in a long time politician or not. My choice for President like many here.
I can't bear it when lefty anchors or guests run off at the mouth but McCotter is a joy to watch on TV because he wont have anything but the truth.
"Cap and Trade" is the "Eugenics" of our generation. Crichton explained the Eugenics phenomenon very well in "A State of Fear's" appendix. After Eugenics was discredited among most rational people, it continued to live as justification for the Nazis' ethnic cleansing of half of Europe. Cap and Trade is going to "economically cleanse" us of a substantial portion of our economy that actually works well when the free market is allowed to operate. The metaphor of clunkers going to their demise in a state-sponsored program devised by social engineers who don't seem to understand Economics 101 to make room for "state-approved" "carbon pure" (read: "Aryan") cars, is too striking and just too depressing. It should be no surprise that most of the usual suspects at the UN enthusiastically support these measures that we will adopt and abide by because of our working legal system while they ignore them and motor on with their rapidly growing economies, pumping more and more carbon into the atmosphere and laughing all the way to the bank.
Rep. McCotter is awesome, a true Statesman! We need more Politicians like him to save this Great Country.
Sense of humor, intelligent, speaks the truth, gets things done, regular folks like him. To liberals, that's kryptonite.

McCotter is most definately a very intelligent, and quick witted man. He is IMHO one of the best people in Congress. He is down to earth and HONEST. A very rare comodity in this day and age.The segments on Red Eye are hillarious. God bless him and God bless America!
I absolutely love this guy. Just became a "member" (whatever that means) of his website http://www.McCotterRocks.com
Love all the videos on there. He doesn't take sh&^ from anybody. Awesome.
