Hollywood’s Silent Spring
by Michael S. Rulle Jr.The sweet pretty things are in bed now of course. The city fathers, they’re trying to endorse, the reincarnation of Paul Revere’s horse. But the town has no need to be nervous. The ghost of Belle Starr, she hands down her wits, to Jezebel the nun, she violently knits. A bald wig for Jack the Ripper who sits, at the head of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mama’s in the factory, she ain’t got no shoes. Daddy’s in the alley, he’s lookin’ for food; I’m in the kitchen with the tombstone blues. “Tombstone Blues” – Bob Dylan
Perhaps the sudden death of pop icon Michael Jackson had many Hollywood stars contemplating their own future obituaries. But the industry, which has been strongly committed to promoting the dangers of man-made global warming, was strangely silent on the Waxman-Markey bill which squeaked though the House last week. The United States economy, i.e., actual real human beings who live in America, continues to suffer from the enormous Obama-lead government’s allocation of resources by massive deficit spending and taxes. The axis of deception changes with each specific fiscal proposal.
The latest comedy of abominations, named–with its usual Orwellian precision–The American Clean Energy and Security Act, was passed Friday by the House of Representatives. The Pelosi/Waxman/Markey trio lead this charge. The winners, in this latest travesty, are that new breed of Obama entrepreneur, the mega wealthy looking for Government handouts. But the Country “has no need to be nervous.” After all, they are simply fixing the “failed policies of the Bush Administration.” But as legislation goes, this Energy Act really takes the cake. As Arnold Kling so succinctly put it, “The cap and trade legislation maximizes rent-seeking (favoritism toward particular businesses) and minimizes carbon reduction.”
This bill was resisted both by Greenpeace and those growing numbers who realize the whole premise of this Act of Congress, “man-made global warming,” is a farce. I have written about global warming before: James Hansen: Man of Science » , Al Gore’s Animal Farm and “Red Flags,” and Short Update on Squealer Al and a Compliant Brokaw. The Global Warming Petition Project has 31,000 signatories from scientists in the US who oppose the so-called climate crisis “consensus.” Their work is summarized in this this paper. The EPA’s own suppressed report skeptical of global warming can be read here CEI Releases Global Warming Study Censored by EPA . And the Senate Minority Report, with 650 signatories, can be read here US Senate Minority Report on Global Warming.
There is no consensus on “man-made” global warming. There are no demonstrated falsifiable theories that support this concept. It started out as an ideological movement and has gradually morphed into a game of crony-capitalism. Much of the world has already moved on. The two fastest growing economies, India and China, don’t even pretend they will participate. This bill will only add further costs to our already over burdened economy. I clearly don’t expect any reasoned argument to persuade those who have chosen to believe in “man-made” global warming. That would be too much to wish for. But what one should expect proponents of that view to be true to their principles. Greenpeace Opposes Waxman-Markey because, in their view, it “sets emission reduction targets far lower than science demands, then undermines even those targets with massive offsets. The giveaways and preferences in the bill will actually spur a new generation of nuclear and coal-fired power plants to the detriment of real energy solutions. To support such a bill is to abandon the real leadership that is called for at this pivotal moment in history. We simply no longer have the time for legislation this weak.” While I obviously disagree, at least they know a pig when they see one. They know this bill does little to eliminate greenhouse gasses.
Where do those Hollywood promoters of the catastrophic dangers of global warming stand on this bill? Are they on the same side as Greenpeace? Not from what I can tell. The Hollywood eco-establishment are those guys who made hundreds of millions trying to terrify the public into action. Given this bill will reduce global warming by “seven percent in 40 years,” according to those who believe in this “science,” one would think these highly visible committed Hollywood activists would be in a state of outrage. But then one would be wrong. Let’s start with “An Inconvenient Truth” Academy Award winning Director Davis Guggenheim and his star Nobel Prize winning docu-hero, Al Gore.
Guggenheim, who said upon first meeting with Al Gore, “I left after an hour and a half thinking that global warming is the most important issue, and if I do one thing in my life it’s to help more people see Al Gore do this. I had no idea how you’d make a film out of it, but I wanted to try.” Al Gore gave a speech in DC on July 17, 2008 and called on Americans to completely abandon electricity generated by fossil fuels within 10 years, and replace them with carbon-free renewables like solar, wind and geothermal. He said “the survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk….{and} the future of human civilization is at stake.”
What does this bill propose? That in ten years, 15%, not the 100% Gore says is needed, of the United States energy (not global energy) needs must come from “renewable” sources. By 2020, “greenhouse gas emissions” must be reduced by 17%. However, “offsets” can be purchased that permits no reduction at all in CO2 emissions. These offsets include “activities such as protecting rain forests in Brazil — that are deemed climate-friendly.” Who will decide when an “offset” is appropriate? How much do you think those offset decisions will be worth? These are mere details that no one knows the answer to–but we can easily guess. This bill will also tax imports from countries that do not have the same standards as the US, which is a direct sales tax on the US consumer. This is absurd beyond belief. It is no wonder people who care strongly about this issue oppose it, regardless of which side they are on.
The entire premise of “An Inconvenient Truth” is the need for radical action now. So Al Gore must oppose this bill, correct? No. Instead Al Gore is the leading “rent seeker,” heavily lobbying Congress to pass this bill calling it “as important to our time as the Civil Rights legislation was to the minorities of the 1960’s and the Marshall Plan of was to America during the 1940’s.” Coincidentally, his venture capital firm is heavily invested in…….Global warming money making schemes. Guggenheim is onto other projects and has been silent on this bill. Davis Guggenheim documents Jimmy Page. But Guggenheim and Gore do not stand alone.
Leonardo DiCaprio has also been a very visible proponent of the dangers of global warming. He was honored by Mikhael Gorbachev earlier this year when he received the International Green Film Award in Berlin. His website is dedicated to various “green” causes and has even written columns in Time Magazine in support of Van Jones, Obama’s advisor on “green jobs.” Congress is debating the most important pieces of legislation on global warming to date, yet he is silent on his website about its passage. Keanu Reeves and Alanis Morrisette narrated The Great Warming, an absurd ideological screed based on the book by Lydia Dotto. Where do they stand and Waxman-Markey? They, too, are silent. How about Oprah Winfrey, Laurie David , and Bill Maher? The list is endless. If they have spoken out, I have not seen it. These people are always at the forefront of appearing morally superior. So why aren’t they publicly involved in arguably the most important political Energy debate this country has had? Why aren’t they on their megaphones urging true reform?
But this is not really surprising. Being green in Hollywood has usually been about moral preening and self-aggrandizement, not actual legislative change. They are no different than Al Gore. This is a promotional device designed to advance their careers by being both visible on these causes yet indifferent to actual legislation. In fact, they may even have a direct interest in no serious legislation passing. This way, they can keep themselves relevant. Eventually, I hope and believe, this issue will die a deserving death.
Like modern day Leni Riefenstahls, Hollywood has been at the ideological forefront in support of the dangers of man-made global warming. But few change their lifestyles. Oprah bragged openly about her private jet at a graduation speech at Duke University. Like Al Gore, they give every indication of being in on the con. It does not really affect them. Paying a few thousand more a year in fuel costs is irrelevant. So what if we have another tax on the rest of the country?
The good news, if one can possibly call it that, is this bill has smoked out the fakes, who many of us have known were there all along. Plus the Senate may finally put the final stake in this vampire’s heart. If so, perhaps the Obama honeymoon can be declared officially over.

much of the Hollywood green movement was a reaction to the Bush Presidency; now that they have a reliable liberal in there most are not overly concerned with the nuts and bolts of this legislation. They have, now, an excuse to feel good about themselves and will not be cheated out of this moment.
The fact that 'cap and trade' is a joke, that Europe has admitted it 'doesn't work in it's present form' (The Economist) and that in Spain this pie in the sky stuff has given them 18% unemployment and a very unpopular
leftist government, and that is the hidden agenda here is not lost on anyone…
If you do your homework you will learn two things: That solar activity is a leading, not lagging indicator for CO2
emmissions, and that the earth has entered a cooling trend since 2000- coinciding with reduced sunspot activities…
Goodness. Global warming caused by the Sun. Who'da thunkit?
Well said dcase. There's another really big point about cap and trade — humans are responsible only for 3% of carbon dioxide emissions. So if we completely shut down all industry worldwide, we still would not appreciably affect the level of carbon dioxide released.
Everyone knows an increase of .01% of CO2 in the atmosphere is the cause of all our problems. If you don't believe me just check out all the evidence at http://www.globalwarmingcauseseverything.com
If anybody wants to delve into some truly technical discussions about the junk science being pushed by the "environmental" movement, let me recommend the following website: http://www.climateaudit.org/
This guy debunks all kinds of environmental garbage. Be warned though, it is very technical.
as you can see it caused quite a stir- over four billion responses in no short order; seeing that as good and fair people we will answer every one of them-
it'll take a few minutes…
LOL! Good luck my friend. . . good luck.
I tried responding to you, but ended up in moderation. When I tried a second time, it posted here rather than in response. So I will take that as a sign.
In any event, you are 100% right about the sun being the cause of heating and cooling and CO2 being a following indicator — the Al Gore mistake.
Several years ago I read a story that said that the ice caps on Mars were receding. This coincided with an increase in solar activity. Dead silence on that factoid from the green/leftist groups.
But you said it yourself "They have, now, an excuse to feel good about themselves and will not be cheated out of this moment."
several of our recent additions were 'moderated' as well; within 40 minutes they had posted, but (sigh…) the brilliance of the immediacy was lost, never to return… such is the life of the internet gadfly.
Yeah… that's the ticket. The stuff I said that vanished also was BRILLIANT!! Trust me on this. You would have wept it was so good.
Now it's gone, and I can't repeat it.
Details, details…Hollywood can only get behind something if it comes with a theme song, a dance move, and pretty colors–and doesn't impact their lifestyle.
yes-
Loved the part where they were told that 'uptick' in certain chronologies while proven "had no interest to the community"… this is the thing you keep hearing- that the 'debate is settled' (Algore) that skeptics are the equivalent to 'holocaust deniers' (funny- the same folk seem to forgive Aquavelvajob for the same thing) and the metaphysical certitude of people who can't tell you what the weekend will be like are 100% convinced the 'sea shall rise' (Hey- only Chuck Heston can do that!) a foot in the next 100 years…
Poppycock, we say…
I would have gotten a TV commentator deal on the spot if mine had posted. I feel your pain.
I think it is high time we ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. Who's with me?
http://www.dhmo.org/
Hmm. You mean: "Like, do as my handlers say. . . and stuff, not as I do. Oh, and see my movie."
I agree completely. People have no idea how dangerous that stuff can be. Apparently, it's fatal if inhaled in volume. . . and it melts witches.
yes-
Mars had a warming period that- guess what- is now cooling as are we… and there were, last we checked, very few SUV's on Mars to begin with.
Absolutely. "You all go and change your lightbulbs and get around on pogo sticks while I keep my plane! And don't forget to see my stupid movie."
I'm pretty sure I would've been banned from BH for life if mine didn't vanish….
and we responded to you with such intellectual heft and charismatic wit it absolutely couldn't be heard- yet…
That and it is used in Nuclear Power plants, Industrial cleansers. I personally have been been injured by it, as have the Gitmo Detainees. People need to learn about this dangerous substance.
"This cause will really enhance my image"
But I hear they have great off roading, out there
And yet, they let anyone own as much of the stuff as they want. When will people learn?!
I'm told that it has gotten so valuable to some organizations, that many experts expect wars to break out over its acquisition!
" The Senate may finally put the final stake in this vampire’s heart. If so, perhaps the Obama honeymoon can be declared officially over".
From your lips to Gods ears.
"Well, I need my plane to get around. . . and my limo and the Hummers to build my image. You people don't need those things to cling to your bibles and your guns in your dirty little caves."
Agent: "My client has been taken out of context, if you read his full quote, you will see that he says that he loves everyone in America, particularly those in middle-America who are the backbone of this great movie-going nation."
I want to break ranks and commend Al Gore for working tirelessly
to make us aware of the dangers we all face from ManBearPig…
LOL! Perfect.
You sir are totally Airwolf!!
well done.
ManBearPig is totally cereal.
I have to admit, that was like shooting endangered fish in a barrel.
Thanks man. And might I say, your H20 tirade is fantastic as well!
The "environmental movement" really ought to be called the watermelon movement: green on the outside, red on the inside.
All this bluster about "climate change" has never really been about saving the earth; it was, and is, about destroying capitalism and free markets. Sure, the hippies on the street, vacuous celebrities, and the first-graders being indoctrinated with images of dying polar bears believe it is really about saving the planet, but not the people at the top of this swindle. For them, capitalism is evil, and therefore it follows that it must be destroying the earth. If the evidence says otherwise, well, the Gores and Obamas of the world believe capitalism needs to be contained and destroyed, anyway.
it is fun but it starts to hurt the brain to walk so close to lunacy.
Airwolf as an adjective however, is a movement i can really get behind.
Didn't Penn and Teller try this on their Showtime series? I think they sent someone with a petition to some tree hugger rally and had no problem getting people to sign. Pretty funny stuff.
AndrewPrice, I do not doubt your 3% figure above at all, but could you give me your source? I'd like to use it when I'm debating with my lefty liberal friends, but they'll want the citation. Thanks!
I say we ban hair products for men, see how Leo likes them apples….
Ironically Bush was a green president.
If this passes kiss the economy good bye and say hello to Edwards two America's.
Also I have to openly laugh at Hollywood and their total and complete defecation in their own bed. They hate capitalism, and yet Hollywood is the sole creation of capitalism. Watching anything from the entertainment industry anymore is like watching a train wreck.
3% is in fact the number. Check out the link in my article entitled the "Global Warming petition" project. Good references in the article as well. The entire co2 argument on global warming can virtually be boiled down (pun intended) whether one believes the Co2 emissions are "amplified" or not in the atmosphere.
The science is really complex–no one has a clue—but for sure, they cannot isolate "man-made" effects
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
AllyHM, I can do better than that. We did an article at our place where we dissect the whole cap and trade bill. The 3% figure is just the beginning. They aren't even trying to cut a significant portion of the 3%!
And it won't even be the EPA handling this issue — it will be the lobbyist-infested Department of Agriculture! Plus, the costs are stunning.
Here is the link: http://commentarama.blogspot.com/2009/06/democrat...
The article has links to all of the sources you will need — including Greenpeace's criticism of the bill! Enjoy!
(P.S. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.)
Yes they did, and people happily signed the petition with no idea what they were agreeing to.
Almost all the politial and social lyrics from the 60s apply now. Conservative movies with these excellent songs shape a great irony.
Buffalo Springfield is among my favorites:
There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
…
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
Only if you're with NASA.
My favorite is "My Blood's so mad feels like coagulatin'"
from Eve of Destruction
You know how to hit them where they live. I guess that's what happens when your a criminal mastermind. Right, Hank?
I refuse to answer on the grounds…..hell, you know the rest…..
I'm off to the hammock district….
It is timely to see Gorbachev's name connected to farce that is "global warming". He may have precided over the downfall of Communisum in mother USSR but the heart of a uber-socialist still beats in his chest. International Socialism just called the print shop and sign painter and changed its identity to "Enviromentalism". "Green movments", "global warming", what ever name they use, are socialist activists dedicated to the damaging of the U.S. economy by any means neccessary to "knock us down a peg or two". It's pure ideological warfare and these socialists have an ally in the White House. Of course he's made his millions so the fact that there are 19% less millionaires in the U.S. since he took office has to be heartening to Obama.
He'll just hafta rub aloe vera in that mop of his….
I saw that and it was halarious…sheep will be sheep particuarily where "feel good" crap is concerned.
I think Krazy Glue would be much more entertaining…
Al Gore got caught, onstage, with that fact. During one of his early presentations, he had a chart with CO2 levels, and another with temperatures. They happened to cover the same epochs. One of the smart guys in the audience challenged him to to an overlay of the two. Sure enough, matched up by dates, warming period always led CO2 increases, not the other way around as the junk scientists would have it. Gore went immediately to the hockey-stick graph, and never put the other two graphs together in the same room again.
That's why you should never drink the Kool-Aid. It's made with dihydrogen monoxide. Has anybody informed Al Gore of this?
MrsSpooky
I told that little nugget of knowledge to a eco-nut friend of mine. He had nothing to say at first. He had thought Al Gore had taught him everything he needed to know to prove man made global warming was real. I could see the wheels turning in his head and then he spouted "Stuff like that isn't an exact science", "The scientist's at NASA could be wrong"! What? Really???
My friend is a really nice guy, but dumb as a bag of hammer's…………..Go figure!
YES!! DHMO was a factor in Mass Suicides like Jonestown!! Wake up people!
I swear all I did was exhale. Next thing you know I got a bill in the mail. Sighing will be next to be outlawed – it adds too much CO2.
While we are at it, will the government tax athletes extra for their carbon footprint? Or are we saving that only for the politicians that are spouting this garbage?
i can't tell if you're serious or a joker.
global warming certainly caused michael jackson's death — that is a fact.
oxi clean produced inert gasses so billy mays' death should be chalked up to karma.
(stepping back from the fountain) "Oh Speaker Pelosi….."
BAN IT!!!!!!
i emailed it to Tammy Baldwin (D WI). (ahem — she probably won't read it anyway.)
should be the next big thing.
but on mars, they would love it.
Can we at least laugh at their idiocy?

[...] Hollywood’s Silent Spring by Michael S. Rulle Jr. [...]
Hmm Michael…. I couldn't read your article because I couldn't get past looking at dumb and dumber…. :/
Hmm… I am going to have to read this…
*that is why I am replying so I can reference back to it….
Hmm… unless all my meteorology professors were wrong…. Cirrus clouds do more for Global Warming than carbon dioxide….
I concur…. especially since it IS the greatest greenhouse gas when it is in it's vapor state….
I heard that NBC was about to introduce a new sitcom called Leo & AL. A cautionary tale about two batchelors that pick up woman under the guise of climate change. The comedic interplay occurs when the gals finally meet them and shreik off into the night after seeing Frankenstein Sr. & Jr. The pilot should be aired in October.
Karl Malden has died. RIP
Wow, not a good time to be a celebrity….
RIP Mr. Malden
Yes Mrs.Spooky, in the mid nineties, the National Geographic had a marvelous article about the solar system and how Mars was heating up secondary to solar activity. The truth is, the planet has been heating and cooling since its birth — we've had ice ages, warming trends, even a reversal of polarity (another one is due to occur but nobody knows when). The truth is, "Climate Change" nee "Global Warming" has never been about the climate or the globe, it's about American middle class prosperity which is a poke in the eye to people living in mud huts in Asia, South America and Africa and even to those taking the bus or train in Europe. The elites who, like the commie leadership in the old USSR never had to participate in the classlessness, aren't going to give up their jets, yachts, central heating, air conditioning — they just expect you to give up yours.
HA HA HA HA HA!! Didn't someone actually get away with that in California?
I've been thinking of starting my own "carbon credit" business. For a mere $75 a day, I'll ride my bicycle to work, a round-trip of about 9 to 10 miles depending on the route I take. For a measly $150 a week, I'll not run my air conditioning during the summer, but I will run an oscillating fan. During the winter, for as little as $50, I'll not run my heater (it's not that cold for me during the winter here in SoCal, hence the reduced rate). So anyone driving around in SUVs or cranking their ACs (Barbara Streisand!), consider my offer; it might make you feel better.
I still have to compare my prices to those offered by Al Gore's carbon credit company, but still, I think my prices are reasonable considering I'm saving the Earth from catastrophic global annihilation.
The global warming issue is a fake front. Liberals cannot condone how liberalism has destroyed areas of this country and people's lives, so they need something to hold onto that says, "You're a bad, bad man." Of course they are hypocrites. Like people like Michael Moore, they become useless the moment they don't have a target to destroy. No prominent republicans are around, therefore nothing to destroy.
Global Warming = Nit-wit, duh…
Think green = "?"
Silly all of you. Bush caused global warming.
Circus clouds! I Knew IT! let's go get Ringling Brothers!
Maybe we should all take the disposable income we used to blow on movies and popcorn and pay our new carbon taxes with it? It could save us from Leo and Al's next flick?
Wouldn't that destroy Mars' fragile ecosystem? Oh wait….
Right! You are correct.
Circus clouds? Are those the ones that make the cool animal shapes…
"Plus the Senate may finally put the final stake in this vampire’s heart. "
I thought the Senate could only try the impeachment of the President, not actually put the final stake…..oh…woops…got a bit mixed up there.
those would be cookies. they come in those little boxes painted like circus trains. and very yummy
the problem with the off-roading on Mars was the crummy electric motors GM made for the rovers…
Meanwhile, here in Louisville, our high temperature was 74 degrees on the first day of July. And most of the day it was slightly cooler than that.
Global warming my foot. (Must keep it wholesome. This is a family site.)
OMG, that sh*t is scary! Ban it now!
*snrk* My friend got countless college students to sign a petition banning it just by telling them that the petition was "for the environment."
My friend: "Dihydrogen monoxide is in our water!"
Random college guy: "Really? Damn, where do I sign?"
Repeat over and over and over…
LOLz! I love that!
Even ten years ago, if I had suggested that the majority party’s proposed bill would be withheld from the minority party two hours from the vote — and then one copy was grudgingly provided, to be shared by all 435 Representatives , you would have looked at me like I was a crazy person…….
Well that’s exactly what happened this past Friday when Congress voted on and passed the infamous HR 2454 Cap and Trade/Carbon Emissions Bill. Final vote: 219 Yea, 212 Nay. A little after 3 am on that very same day a 300 page amendment was added to the original 900+ pages. This is the longest suicide note in history and will further hasten our downward economic spiral. The Senate looks to debate it this Fall where it will likely get nowhere. Friday’s vote may have been a gift to the POTUS for the upcoming UN meeting knowing there’s little chance of it getting thru the Senate. Before Friday’s vote I made my feelings known to our Democratic Congressman. I see he voted No but I’ve no idea what his real motivation was. Some that voted Yes received calls 20:1 urging a No vote and they still voted Yes.
This is about more than just higher electricity rates. It’s a massive redistribution of wealth, further limits our freedoms all under the guise of reducing an essential trace greenhouse gas, and does next to nil for energy independence. This Manmade Global Warming/Climate Change House Of Cards is tumbling down. Every week more and more new contrary evidence is seeing the light of day. The Mainstream Media won’t report it, but this vital information is getting out to those that want honest debate on this important issue.
Looking past the Senate this Fall we have the December Copenhagen UN meeting on a new Global Warming Treaty. Remember the Kyoto Treaty? Well you ain’t seen nothing yet. I shudder to think what the U.S. delegation would love to commit us to for years or decades forward. Lastly there’s the EPA waiting in the wings to regulate all things CO2. Just this past week a leaked string of internal EPA e-mails detailed suppression of evidence that undermines the CO2 argument.
Remember Friday’s vote, because if this horror show is implemented on the American public it will blow up in our face as it has in every country this has been tried. At what cost in dollars and individual freedoms? Mark your calendar in RED, because that is the path we are heading toward. Contact your Senators and ask them if they’re prepared to defend a Yes vote for this misguided Bill. Let them know a NO Vote will ensure your support next election cycle.
Cap & Trade is at best enviro-fascism – Dcase referenced the Economist as saying it won't work in it's present form. What the Economist really wants is a straight carbon tax which is even more draconian than cap and trade.Foreign Policy magazine and many others are still plugging away at this just like the Economist…Why?
Here's why. The bankers who control Nero (Obama) are the ones who want this. Cap & trade will essentially create a parallel financial system that d-bags like Gore are salivating about profiting from. It's about money and control, not environmental change. And Obama knows this.
As for Hollywood, it's simply a vehicle for fund-raising and propaganda. Why is anyone surprised all these celebs are silent now? They can't tell their a$$ from a hole in the ground anyway. You expect them to really read a bill? Please. Hollywood is irrelevant to legislation, just as always. But where Hollywood is NOT irrelevant is in fomenting the Obama cult of personality. Most Americans are brain dead at this point, and don't want to think. So when they see a d-bag like Dicaprio spouting off at the mouth about how great Obama is, or how bad global warming is, they just follow along no questions asked. We all must continue to educate people about what is really going on. Thank you
They did that on a Penn and Teller show. The one whose title will get filtered by the comment system.
"Axis of deception" and "comedy of abominations" are excellent descriptions of that awful bill and its promoters.
