Obama: The Woody Boyd Candidate

Towards the end of the series, the hayseed junior bartender Woody Boyd (Woody Harrelson) decides to run for city council. He is encouraged in this endeavor by psychiatrist Fraser Crane (Kelsey Grammer), the bar’s resident elite, who acts as Woody’s campaign manager.
Fraser masterminds Woody’s campaign as a social experiment: He is convinced that anyone, even a bumpkin, can get elected, simply by spouting vague cliches. His advice to Woody? Don’t be specific on the campaign trail – just repeat empty slogans like “change.”
When I saw this, I burst out laughing – perhaps this is where Axelrod & Co. received their inspiration for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign theme, I surmised.
In the show, Fraser’s guess proves accurate. Woody is elected. But in the aftermath of Woody’s victory, Fraser has a terrible foreboding of the future – Woody’s election to city council begins a long climb up the cursus honorum, and he eventually becomes president of the United States. Because Woody is stupid (in Fraser’s mind), this of course leads to a nuclear holocaust.
“Thanks Dr. Crane. I couldn’t have done it without you,” Woody tells Fraser at his victory party. “No one can prove that,” the psychiatrist responds, shaken by his vision.
But of course, avid Cheers viewers know Woody to be far from brainless. For instance, there was the time when owner-bartender Sam (Ted Danson) tried to cheat Woody out of an agreed upon raise – Woody sees through the ruse. Or the time Woody snookered a group of firemen out of their Dalmatian. And on and on.
Sure, Woody was sweet. Kind. Honest. But stupid? No way.
But to Fraser, Indiana-born Woody was clearly an idiot. Fraser, being a Harvard educated, Eastern seaboard-dwelling intellectual, naturally shared the prejudices of his breed; that anyone from fly-over country must be mentally deficient.
For my own part, if we had a Woody Boyd for president, I would sleep soundly. It is men like Fraser Crane, with their smug airs of moral and intellectual superiority, who think they know all and think they especially know what is best for others, who frighten me. It is rulers like that who bring ruin and call it “reform.”
Barack Obama may have campaigned like Woody Boyd. But he governs like a Fraser Crane. God help us.

One of my Libtard friends kept repeating (about Obama) — "He's the smartest guy in the room."
I doubt that's true, but even if it is, intelligence isn't the end-all be-all. I'll take integrity and persistence over intelligence any day.

To me, he's not smart, he's not funny, he has the same angry/serious tone in every single speech he reads off his teleprompter, he's immature and thin-skinned, he's vindictive and childish, and he believe all the affirmative active hype he's been told over all his years sheltered from real America. I believe he is motivated by a Ayers-like anti-Americanism which borders on treason. America needs to neutralize this mistake November 2010.
At least Woody Boyd had the sense to ask Fraser "what do we do now". But the scary part is that Obama is a very driven ideologue who is determined to impose his worldview on this country, not to represent the people of this country as has been tradition. God help us but we can help ourselves a lot November 2010, VOTE THEM OUT!

I have never seen any indication of "intelligence" in 0bama. For the life of me I don't know where this myth originated. He's about like any college grad… which is pretty much covered (as Pastor Brothers would say) by "girls gone wild".

I never bought into the "great campaign" crap. The election was about turnout. Black America turned out in precedented numbers to vote for a black man. White males were not excited by John McCain and had lower than normal turnout.
Talking about the racial nature of the last election is a third rail. Black Female voter turnout was up around 67%..higher than white male turnout. That had never happened before. Blacks accounted for about 18% of the electorate in the last election. Two million white voters staying home and an extra two million black voters turning out pretty much accounts for the swing in the election.
The real question is whether the Democrats can ever run a white male candidate for President again. I don't think they can.

The first part of the article makes me laugh. I laugh because I really think Obama is just an idiot. Sure, he can play smart, but what has he ever done that's smart? He also talked about "democratizing" the workplace." By that, he meant, taking over the business's premises and making sure the "so-called owner" was afraid or unable to return.

I remember thinking my eyes had been opened when I read about Henry Ford's philosophy of hiring. He had an ego, but was willing to sublimate it entirely in the pursuit of business solutions. He was confident (and comfortable) enough in his own skin to hire men who were far more able and intelligent than he was, since that was the ideal way to advance his business goals.
However, when the "leader" works toward goals that have nothing to do with supplying that for which there is a demand, all bets are off, as far as sublimation of ego. Obama thinks he is some sort of golden child. He's a sorry, rotten, mentally screwed-up b*st*rd, and that's the sad (for the rest of us) truth.

This is another case of "elections have consequences." We got very lucky with Billy-boy Clinton, whose roving hands were somewhat tied by the Congress of 1994. We're not nearly so lucky today, when the Congress possesses a similar SQ (scurrilousness quotient) as the President.
I ponder this question: Since McCain would've pushed for about 60% of Obama's agenda, are we better off that Obama was elected? At least, that way, there is a chance for him (and the Congress) to demonstrate the true danger they pose to us and our unborn descendants. At least, a large plurality of the American voting public have seen that this way, the Libtard way, lies madness. I also wonder if maybe McCain would've pushed the correct number of hot buttons, leading to a true Conservative appearing in 2012 to wrest the Presidency from him.

The endless, non-specific platitudes — and Frasier's directive to just keep repeating the word change over and over. And Woody's interview with a reporter — Woody says almost nothing but the writer fills in all the blanks with a message and an eloquence that didn't exist.

I watch Cheers re-runs whenever I can. In the episode you describe, Fraser also had a dream with Woody in the Oval Office, Woody answers the red phone and says "Oh yeah! Well I'm launching my missiles too." then he pushes the big red button. Woody's wife asks, "Who was that?" Woody replies, "I don't know, the phone rings, I answer it." Fraser wakes up in a sweat just after a huge nuclear explosion (in the dream).
So sad, sit-coms were actually funny then. What happened? Now everything has some sort of embeded message (liberal and politically correct of course) from some sort of impossible social unit, a black, a white, a woman, an oriental and a gay, or a family unit of a dumb dad, a genius mom, a wise-cracking teen, and a gay.
I also have had similar thoughts about Obama, it is all about him, what happens as this self centered egotist continues to lose his fawning fans? Will he take us all with him as he goes down? Will he push the big red button?

She is America's "Iron Lady" (Margaret Thatcher reference for the readers that may be too young to remember), with the common sense and fortitude to be President of the United States. The best thing about Sarah Palin is that she personifies what made Woody Boyd lovable: She is smart, likable, and an outsider, bringing in fresh ideas and common sense that America needs. I find it absurd that there is still the meme that Obama is "intelligent". I have 2 gifted children (i.e. in the top 1%) by IQ, and I spend my time around their friends and their activities. I know how these kids act and behave and I can tell you that the zero is not even close.
My guess is that Sarah Palin would beat Obama on an IQ test by 20 or 30 points.

His "slip ups" while commenting on the Boston police/Gates affair and again when he gave shout-outs before his addressing the Fort Hood terroist shooting aren't signs of stupidity, but a sign of racial antagonism on one hand and lack of empathy on the other. Don't anyone think for one second that this man is a puppet, incompetent, or stupid. What he is in addition to other things is cold, a liar, angry, narcissistic, insecure, without a conscience…if anyone has known, even remotely, anyone who subcribes to the socialist view of the world, you might have recognized these traits in them.

Have to agree with you. In the past, I felt like most liberals wanted the same end result for our country that I do, be we just differed on the best way to get there. With Obama, I feel like his end goal is the complete opposite of mine. His vision of a perfect America is 180% different from mine. It's scary.

And look, there is plenty of blame to go around on the economic mess this country fell into. As a conservative, I'm very unhappy with the decisions made in 2008 to try to address failures. But I'm also abhorred by the actions of the Fed since the early nineties. The tweaking here and there has lead to more and more tweaking and a larger and more devastating bust.
The problem most of us have is a Federal Government out of touch, out of control, and seemingly growing by leaps and bounds and trying to control society. That's not our vision or history of America and we're not going to sit by and watch the socialist takeover of the country personified in the current administration and congress. It is a defining characteristic of the Obama presidency that he surrounds himself with flawed, weakminded or ideologically reliable characters. There is no one impressive in the whole bunch, and a whole lot of creepy characters, from the tax-cheating treasury secretary to the 9/11 truther czar – the list goes on and on, starting with Biden.
The left said Bush that lived in a bubble, but the shoe is on the other foot. The Bush administration had highly experienced people – as even liberal media conceded in 2001 – many of whom could plausibly have stepped in as President in a pinch. Look at the cv of people like Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld, Thompson, Rice etc – not many pushovers there. Obama has hardly any people with executive experience, none of them heavyweights (Napolitano, the one former governor, proves the point).

McCain would probably have run the deficit for the recession year at around 800 billion. He woud have not bailed out the auto industry. He would no doubt have boots on the ground in Afghanistan by now. Pelosi would have to consider a presidentail veto in crafting her commie-care legislation, where now she has the green light to go Red.
If the Health Care bill is defeated (not likely). Then we are better off with Obama…McCain would have conceded and signed something. If the Health Care bill gets passed, then the Democrats will have succeeded in crippling the American Economy and making 8+ percent unemployment, 2.5% GDP growth, and 12% defcitis the norm in America. The future will be very bleak here.
People of faltering character seek to reassure themselves by reflecting their beliefs onto others. In that, the two are similar. But beyond that, NO, "Mr Gardener" was a childish fool, but good at heart. O has an agenda. He is a socialist. He knows exactly what he wants to accomplish. You know, I'm totally with you on the problems of shoveling money to the bankers without strings, and I agree that the Patriot Act sucks. But these are problems shared by Obama and the Bush administration because of the catastrophes of the Bush administration. Also, do we have that much money to begin with? No. We're borrowing all of that money from China. The amount we'll be paying in interest each year alone is more than the GDP of almost all other countries – but hey…we haven't spent enough yet, quite frankly. There still a lot of abortion clinics out there that need toilet paper…after all, the economy needs stimulating!

If you're talking about the stimulus bill only, no it has not. As a for instance it enables states to keep up with basic maintenance – continuing to employ teachers for instance – and then there are the building projects and so forth. Really it's pretty obvious.

At best, targeted spending can help ease economic recession, but it cannot fix it. Unfortunetly much of the "stimulus" is nothing but worthless pork. Tax breaks for rum and wooden toy makers. Tax credits for geo thermal heating and bicycle commuting. Paying to dig holes and then fill them up again is nonesense. Keynes is a socialist idiot. The "jobs created" sham tells the story. Read the Lefty Boston Globe report from last week. There are reports from all over the country on the boondoogle that is happening. WITH BORROWED MONEY! and only a THIRD of the money has been spent. The other two thirds won't be spent until spring and summer, which should trend up employment just about late summer and fall. Gee just in time for the elections. What a coincidence.
