Story of Two Filmmakers: Empathy (Hollywood Style)
by Michael McGrutherThe far left values you see hammered into your children’s heads in film and TV, the constant “stupid American” portrayal of people like you and your neighbors in popular entertainment, the overly-sexual teen shows you find on afternoon programming, the awful role models young stars and starlets make by having their debauchery seem invitingly glamorous, and the endless supply of celebrities willing to mock “flyover country” and proclaim them all mental — all these cultural dividends, and more, can be tied back to one extremely powerful and focused force working within show business that seems absolutely unstoppable for now — empathy (Hollywood style.)
Let me explain. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Most of us experience it every day through our basic interactions as we go about our business, and it causes us to act or react a certain way with other individuals. I see a pregnant woman who needs a seat on the subway. I get up and offer mine, first out of empathy, followed by kindness. Empathy informs the kindness on the most basic human level.
But that’s not how empathy works in modern day, leftist dominated Hollywood.
In Hollywood, empathy’s literally the life-blood those in powerful positions dole out to like-minded up and comers in order to keep the dream factories making entertainment that supports and promotes their world view. Here’s just one example of how it works. Imagine a young filmmaker makes some noise at the festivals with a short film he wrote and directed. He gets calls from agents, managers and producers; they all want to meet and see what else he’s working on, sign him, etc.
The young filmmaker is thrilled. This could be his big break. He goes to L.A. for the ”dog and pony show” (back to back meetings for a week), and feels as though he’s met every single person at every single company in town. In these meetings, which take place on famous studio lots or ultra-modern office bungalows, they serve coffee or water and the mood is decidedly “chill” with plenty of movie nostalgia around to excite the dreamers. Our young filmmaker pitches his next project and the execs start calling out names of stars they can “get,” making it all seem very easy, and this over-the-top reception makes the young filmmaker feel comfortable. It’s as if he’s suddenly in the company of new best friends…
Yet, little does the young filmmaker know that the meetings were no longer about the work once it was established he could do good work. Instead, the focus is on carefully uncovering what he thinks and believes about issues vital to liberals. And only the naive reveal themselves honestly, expecting to be treated fairly. So let’s pretend our young filmmaker is naive (honest) and was asked if he would consider directing a romantic comedy with abortion being the central part of the story. It’s something the young liberal producer has been developing for a while and feels the young filmmaker is just the right guy to pull it off. The title is “He’s Gotta Go!” Our young filmmaker flinches and declines the offer because he’s pro-life and could never do a good job with a project like that. Instead, he pitches some other ideas, but for some reason none of them seem to stick…
So when these same execs and agents meet a second young filmmaker (this one discovered at a Hollywood party, not a film festival) and find he’s on board with the town’s political point of view, the execs naturally feel more empathy towards this one. They look at this young, struggling person who has revenge in his heart against his small town childhood church, American institutions, parents, peers or any number of issues that will bind this person to forever attacking conservative values and thought — and they see themselves.
So while the talented conservative is politely shunned, the young liberal filmmaker lands work on a big-budget film with a like-minded producer attached and together they begin to shape something that could easily edify a pro-American world view into just another dull expensive snoozer filled with liberal themes. (”Superman Returns” is the perfect example.)
Keep in mind that nearly everyone in town these young filmmakers met with know each other well. They party together and steer Hollywood further away from American audiences together. Agents and managers connect talent to junior producers and the assistants at companies who read screenplays and decide what to forward to their bosses — so even young personal assistants have the power to skillfully steer material and people into a pipeline that supports the liberal world view; while steering everything else into the trash can.
It must be truly intoxicating to shape pop culture to reflect your out of mainstream values while enjoying every human vice imaginable … and then using film to tell us we’re the problem.
Let’s never forget it was the conservative, pro-American Hollywood that gave us the finest actors, a majority of the classics, and a realistic portrayal of life in America (not to mention support for our troops without question in times of war).
Corrupting or casting aside a whole generation of conservative entertainers who might just connect with audiences in a way that threatens the liberals’ ability to work and hold powerful positions in town… That’s what the left/right turf war in Hollywood is really about.
No wonder it’s so ugly.

Wow! If this is bad as you have written, then we, as a nation, are in for serious problems. The first thought that came to mind is we MUST create a new Hollywood..you are not going to change the current one..too much money, power, and entrenchment. Why not start with production companys first then shared space and resources in a new location? Use the internet for distribution…I would just as soon sit at home and watch it on my computer than go out to these theatres.
the prior article was "Will the real conservative moneymen please stand up?"
The only way Hollywood will get this is by losing bigtime on the better movies being made elsewhere.
Simon that is my dream/plan I have just not met a willing investor with the financial resources and interest in actually creating a new Hollywood. Believe me, I'm trying and I do think that it's possible to develop, produce and release entertainment for a fraction of the cost the current bloated Hollywood system spends. I see a conservative new Hollywood as one studio at first that literally operates like an old fashioned studio (with actors and writers on contracts to make product but with good back end deals for all involved so that production costs up-front can stay very low.)
There is an underlying "conspiracy" by the elites to control ALL things. Media, big business, schools, POTUS etc..Why else would there be such a hidden thread of connectivity to government, the fed and the media et al? Even the hollywood elites are blinded as to why they are the way they are. They have ZERO empathy for their fellow human beings, they operate on a "what will others think" basis, period.
What a paranoid man you are.
"Let’s never forget it was the conservative, pro-American Hollywood that gave us the finest actors, a majority of the classics, and a realistic portrayal of life in America (not to mention support for our troops without question in times of war)."
Support for the troops without question is exactly as it should be. On the other hand support for the lying politicians that start wars for personal gain/reasons should ALWAYS be questioned
Realistic portrayal of american life? Like Leave it to Beaver? Andy Griffith? Brady Bunch?
Finest Actors? Clark Gable has a realistic American life… high school dropout with only one parent. Bogart? Parents were rich and he was sent to the finest schools.. not very realistic but at least one of his parents was an opium addict, that makes it more like real life.
Classics? The Wizard of Oz was about getting in touch with your inner strengths and it did it without religion. That's classic! But you are right in at least one case Gone with the Wind romanticizes war.. truly a conservative attitude if there ever was one
that is one of the reasons I just try not to support financially any film that involves the most obnoxiously vocal liberals (Streisand, Robbins, Penn, Belafonte, Glover etc.)
How did you get that Gone with the Wind romanticizes war?
I saw it recently. It didn't have any romantic notions on war.
Me too.
I Agree with Tennessee_Jed. Where's All the Big Time Conservative Money People to Get Behind Directors, Actors, Writers and Producers That Have a Conservative Bent . When Those Kind of Films are Made They Usually Make MONEY Something Every one's Politics Understands. I Believe it was Lenin Who Said, When He First Saw a Film… Who Controls This…"Meaning Film"…Shapes the Minds of the People or Words to That Effect. The Conservative Big Shots Should Think About That. Because There's a WAR Going on Out Here for the Minds Of the People and Future Generations and the Other Side Doesn't Like Taking Prisoners.
How much startup do you need? While I doubt many of us here have the assets to bankroll an entire movie studio, I'm sure some of us have some spare cash lying around. For example, I've got 12 bucks in my paypal account, earned from doing online surveys.
It's not much, but neither is a single raindrop. When combined with others, though, that raindrop becomes part of a torrential downpour, which leads to flooding and mudslides, which in turn topple houses into the Pacific ocean.

So "real life" equals negativity and pessimism. Got it.
"…just another dull expensive snoozer filled with liberal themes. ('Superman Returns' is the perfect example.)"
So I guess that Bryan Singer's no longer "attached" to direct "Lightspeed," huh?
'Supernan Returns' is hack work…
And Singer had sunk from his brilliant debut in 'Usual Suspects'. Fortunately for him Cruise tabbed him to do 'Valkyrie' which actually revived both careers…
the plight of the conservative filmmaker…
We completelt 'empathize' (how's that for co-opting a theme, eh?) with Mr McGruder having traveled some of the same steps. There is no doubt that you are vetted for ideological reasons in Hollywood; we have seen it firsthand. Still, there are plenty of conservative (ok, more libertarian) folk working in the industry and even some mainstream producers (Bruckheimer comes to mind) are definitely centre-right…
So, all is not lost- yet.
I used the example SUPERMAN RETURNS because of it's white wash of American values. Lines like "Truth, justice…all that stuff" come to mind.
No, sorry to disappoint you but Singer is STILL attached to "Lightspeed" and you must be someone I know if you know of that project so tell us your real name will you? I have tried very hard to get Singer to leave the project and he just refuses for some reason…I wonder why?
About 12 million dollars to make 10 movies and cover costs. We will build the studio in the state that offers the best deal to have all that money being spent. (By deal I mean cheap real estate, easy access from airports, etc.)
Outside Nashville would be a great place to start a new Hollywood.
It is going to be VERY HARD to over come the moniker that we are DUMB or stupid… hell look at our president going overseas nad APOLOGIZING for what we have done in the past? and then allowing other countries to bully and push us around……(Iran and N. Korea) and then pointing NUKES at us.. what does he do..just keep apologizing
actually Knoxville wuld be even better…
And not just because we ahve property there either. Topography, infrastructure, abundance of water, proximity to east coast… let's just say we're 'thinking' about it quite heavily…
Sounds like the Dallas area to me
haven't you heard? no one has a happy childhood.
and if you did, you have to invent a better backstory
Completely spot on Micheal. The vision of a total government takeover has a fatal flaw – as they refuse to understand that fantasy doesn't work well with reality. Life is not a script.
As to empathy, isn't that the requirement to be a Judge on the Supreme Court?
As a transplanted Yankee with a Tennessee bride, I can't say enough good things about Knoxville. It is a city on the come as the cliche goes. It strikes me that if one looks at the HUGE success of Fox News Channel, that proves there is a huge potential market for such a venture. Fox is FAR from perfect, but id does illustrate the craving for an alternatative to standard liberalized fare.
Exactly.
I began watching CSI-NY just because Gary Sinise is in it – and am glad that I did.
For some time now, I have been trying to identify Hollywood people who lean toward conservative values and then try to pay to see their movies or watch their TV shows.
This site has been great in helping to figuring out who is who.
Distribution is one of the problems against putting up the family fortune to get into the movie business. Is there a conservative legal group out there who can target the movie-house chains with discrimination suits?
no kidding…
Just down there a couple of weeks ago; did DC, Annapolis, Baltimore, Fairfax and Nashville in eight days. How's that for location?
Stuff is going to start to happen soon…
"On the other hand support for the lying politicians that start wars for personal gain/reasons should ALWAYS be questioned"
While you are using media to expose Kennedy and Johnson, be sure to also tell stories about politicians from Russian, China Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Brazil, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Palestine, Libya.
How about that Stalin who intentionally starved 30,000,000 Ukrainians to death? Why haven’t we seen that story on the silver screen? How about Mao who accidentally starved 30,000,000 Chinese to death? Or how about reminding the 14 year olds of this country of exactly what happened when we chickened out of South East Asia – the 2 to 6 million of our allies that the commies slaughtered?
"However, what's to stop center/right-Hollywood from lurching left at some point in the future? "
That's always the challange and always will be. This is never going to end.
We have to teach ourselves and children to love this fight.
it already IS lurching left, but they are still (at this point) our brothers and sisters and we will attempt, anyway, to bring them back to the fold…

The idea of a movie funded by thousands of 10 dollar pay pal investors fascinates me!
The issue, which your earlier posts addressed, and to which this site is devoted is "how do we overcome this?" I can only see it by somehow finding a way to fund a production company, studio, or whatever willing to make, back financially and promote directors and actors of a more conservative world view.
The Next Time You See Gone with the Wind… put the History of America By Howard Zinn Away… and Put Down the BONG. Maybe You'll Grasp It…..Maybe..
I have to admit I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of a "parallel right-leaning Hollywood." Don't get me wrong – I understand completely, not to mention there's got to be a cheaper way of making good movies (seriously, romantic comedies cost almost $100 million nowadays).
However, what's to stop center/right-Hollywood from lurching left at some point in the future? There will still be spoiled brat stars, regardless of political affiliations. There will still be Access Hollywood, The Insider, and all those other POS programs that they routinely make fun of on The Soup.
You do make a good point re: agents, managers, and assistants (readers, too). It's not enough to have conservative filmmakers; you also need conservatives (or at least open-minded non-political types and independents) working these jobs too. Marketing people, agency people, etc.
And good call on Superman. The more I watched it, the less I'd like it. It doesn't even have anything to do with politics; it simply isn't a good movie. What should've been a classic was merely okay. Give me the 1978 version any day.
One last thing – a film school friend recently asked me, "Scott, if we traveled back in time sixty or seventy years, how would we make money?" His suggestion was betting on sporting events (like BTTF Part II) but my idea was, "Go to Hollywood! You know how easier it would be to work in the studio system?"
Sinise is fantastic. You have come to the right place to help you do that. Most of the contributors fall into that category in one job or another. Among just the actors alone, guys like Jimmy Arone, Gary Graham, and Dwight Schultz have my total respect and admiration for what they are doing here.
perhaps the most misunderstood film in history…
For all of it's strengths (and flaws) GWTW does not romanticize war, au contraire'- it shows the rush of jingoism and false optimism as it degrades into harsh reality; the depiction of the Civil War is pretty much spot on… ultimately the film is quite realistic in all it's depictions. 'Oz' had now entered the pantheon of gay rights (still not sure why) but anyhow it's the one film from the golden 1939 era the left seems to like…
couldn't agree more…
We also believe the best way to fix this is to work with and through the system, although strong competition is needed. In the 70's Burt Reynolds pretty much saved the industry from itself by making conservative themed films shot in the South ('White Lightning', 'Gator', etc) and starting a cottage industry that made a lot of money and helped pull Hollywood back to the center.
May the South (film industry!) rise again…
actually Knoxville would be even better…

I'm doing my part by staying home
Cheapskate couchpotatoes of the world unite!
Great read Michael! It would seem that BH has a reoccurring theme with your, Scott Graves and now Evan Sayet posts on injecting conservatism into liberal Hollywood. I love it and is part of the reawakening of America. As a consumer of movies my wife and vote with our dollars, we will not support any America hating ba$tards product again.

If they will come back into the fold, ok.
Socialized health rationing, cap & trade or illegal immigration can destroy our freedoms a the very least for a few decades and possibly forever. Right now, this lurch has to be stopped, whether we can make nice with them or not.
we were simply speaking of our Hollyweird brethren- not the Pelosi, Schumer and Durbin crowd… they need to be stopped now, and stopped cold. Schumer has said they will do a procedural vote on health care if necessary to get it passed- they aren't kidding on this. If he fails to get this done it's a failed Presidency and they know it. They think that the public will get over it once it's done.
Wrong.
I agree that the inflection point right now is with Congress, but any Hollyweirdo who stands up for Frank, Shcumer, Reid, Pelosi, et cetera doesn't deserve to be coddled in the short run.
Paul Rodriguez recently realized that all the fundraising he did for Dems here in California got him nothing when environmentalists shut off the water for 80,000 farm jobs in his area.
I am hoping Lopez's HBO special counters the commie Maldef, La Raza, Mexican Mafia and Zeta influences. I liked the fact that he said that his show would be subtitled in Spanish, not the other way around.
Hey in '68, I voted for Dick Gregory. Bring em along if you can, but for the most part I don't feel like taking any prisoners.
Dick Gregory- haven't heard that name in a while… was that before or after the hunger strike? As far as Rodriguez pretty soon all Hispanics will see the left is using them- not helping them. They are, after all, Catholics and hard workers- and entrepenuers as well…
'68 was before the hunger strike. The spades were in.
I wouldn't count on Hispanics realizing anything in time. When they get across the Rio Grande, their families are intact. By the second generation they are following pop culture, the commies and the gangsters, and 50% of them don't have fathers. If this continues, they might rival the blacks who are at 70%.
As much as I despise an invasion that can eradicate our freedoms, so long as conservatives don't go up against the leftist organizations who are focusing their world view in the minds of the Hispanics, we are doomed. It is just a matter of time. Our own organizations have to tell the Mexicans the truth.
pretty grim read- we can tell you've been around the block… our experience has shown Mexican hispanics to be pretty solid and conservative citizens; that doesn't include the Central Americans which are a huge problem. Either way a huge wake up call is needed-
And being issued…
I don't mean to be any more grim than the reality is. Agreed, when they first arrive Mexicans are conservative peasants. I find them sincere and hard working.
Growing up here is a problem because they are habitually being misled. It's something like how the Indians had no defense against the plague. Their kids have no defense against Big Media's voice of God, which misleads them into self-immolation.
You and I agree on the need for a wake up call.
once again your cynical but ultimately wise take id very solid. Native Americans are a case in point. While freedom naturally courses through their veins they have been fed collectivist nonsense so long they are hopelessly conflicted- and incurred huge health issues as a result…
