This was truly encouraging to read. We under-estimate the power of our films, and of the industry on people around the world. If you let them play, too, they might learn to love the game.

In 1983 I interviewed a Russian who was teaching at Arizona State, in fact a BMoC there. When he defected from Russia in the early 70s he had been #3 KGB as I recall. One of his KGB duties had been to extol the joys of communism to shipworkers in Cairo. I asked him why he defected and he said it was blue jeans, jazz, and what he saw in American movies - he wanted some of that, and had since the time he'd been with his father, who was an attache in Rome.

When Hollywood is good, it is our greatest export, movies and TV. An Egyptian friend told that when "Dallas" was the biggest thing on the networks, it would air at noon in Cairo and the city would come to a virtual halt as people watched it.

I hope a lot of people in Hollywood read your story and see the movie.

A good point. I would have to listen carefully to the film to see if I did it correctly or not as I do recall the differentiation. It's been a year and a half and, I must admit, my Arabic practice has diminished considerably without practice. I may have recalled it incorrectly for the article. Not to mention that I think that I got used to saying "ana magnoon" during the entire chaotic process. Thanks for the linguistic point.
