I have my plot quibbles also. Even the Vulcans in classic Trek didn't know they were related to the Romulans, as an example, so how did they know the villains were Romulans?
Leave that aside, the villian did have a motive. He blamed Spock for the destruction of his people and most importantly his wife. In his grief and rage he plotted revenge. A

As much of a stick in the mud as I am about canon, I have to say this movie was JarJar Abrams' Star Wars. So, next time he goes to audition to George Lucas to do a SW film, this is his show reel. No meaningful storyline, motivation free villain and loud, screaming exploding FX. The recipe for a Star Wars shmorgasbord. Not much to do with a show deemed "too cerebral" by network hacks in the early 60's.

Fun is exactly what it was. For Mother's Day weekend, I saw it TWICE. And I figure the DVD might be out around my birthday. You got one thing wrong though. Kirk was tough AND smart.

They couldn't use the transporter until the drill was off--that's why Kirk and Sulu were transported BACK to the ship, but had to jump down. The drill interfered with communications as well As soon as it was off they began transporting. They got roughly 10,000 people AS Vulcan was becoming a tiny black hole--which doesn't seem too shabby.

And building the ship on the surface(before, presumably, finishing it in space) isn't really a problem when you've clearly got gravity control.

I don’t understand these Star Trek fans: Are there left-wing and right-wing factions, or are they just all geeks? Beats me. I heard they have weird parties too. Nothing sexual (I hope). Who are these people?

Saw the matinee today. I went in with very low expectations and came out very, very pleasantly surprised. As a longtime fan of the original series who watched it as a kid in the middle sixties and in reruns ever since, I must say this movie was more like the original series than any of the other movies. The characters were perfect, especially Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scott. I also LOVED the complete absence of any PC nonsense. The early sequence with the 'antique' mid-sixties corvette was a great metaphor for the 'reboot' of Star Trek.

Agreed - was myself thinking of the Apollo missions - the truth is often stranger than fiction...

I'm sorry but the move lost me with yet another lazy, tired, and played out time travel explaination. They have used it on every version of Star Trek, but Voyager and Enterprise way over used it. Just shows the writers were lazy. Instead of actually thinking something up, hell let's just say it was a time line split. Ok, great writing, lets break for lunch and work on the rest of the movie...

Because it was a prequel they could have kept with the original canon with some minor tweaks and keep the new and old fans alike happy. But instead they relied on the one plot line that most fans got sick of in the TV series.
