Tonight: 12:30am ET: ‘Red Eye New Years Eve Special!’ — Here’s Mud in Your Big ‘Red Eye’
by Mike LaChanceSince 2008, two friends have urged me to watch Red Eye on the FOX News channel. I finally got around to it one late night in March of 2009. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Red Eye is hosted by Greg Gutfeld. Greg is so smart he makes Stephen Hawking look like Janet Napolitano at a national security press briefing.
Gutfeld’s sidekick is Bill Schulz. Bill is so funny he could make a femur seem humerus.
And finally, there’s TV’s Andy Levy, a guy so sharp that he blunts the knife in Charlie Sheen’s hand.
Welcome to the world of Red Eye, television’s last best hope for topical late night comedy.
In case you missed it, a report from Mediaite last fall said more people watch Red Eye on FOX at 3 AM than CNN’s prime time show at 8 PM.
“Red Eye averaged 432,000 total viewers and 202,000 in the demo. Let’s deal with the demo first – CNN’s 8pm ET show, hosted by Campbell Brown, averaged 191,000 in the demo. Let’s just let that one sink in – Fox News had more people in the all important A25-54 demographic watching their channel at three in the morning (east coast time) than CNN had for the show that leads off their prime time. This says as much about Fox News as it does about CNN. Wow.”
Wow, indeed. Red Eye goes everywhere late night comedy is supposed to go. A place where few late night comedy shows have dared to tread since a certain inauguration in January of 2009 when Andrew Breitbart wrote:
“In an era of extreme political correctness, when almost everyone is offended by almost everything, and with self-appointed advocacy groups organized to find offense on behalf of almost everyone – offensively, without the majority in the group’s consent – it’s nice to know that there’s a place to go where everyone can be offended almost all of the time.”
Red Eye has a noticeable libertarian streak and according to Wikipedia, Gutfeld, Schulz and Levy are all libertarians. While Wikipedia’s accuracy is questionable, I am absolutely sure that Greg Gutfeld deserves the 2009 award for libertarian quote of the year. During an interview with Reason TV last May, Gutfeld quipped:
“I became a conservative by being around liberals. I became a libertarian by being around conservatives.”
Last week, Greg mentioned that tonight, New Year’s Eve, Red Eye will air a special program at 12:30 am eastern time featuring some of the show’s favorite guests. I’m hoping for a mud wrestling match between S.E. Cupp and Ann Coulter.
I also have a suggestion for a 2010 Red Eye ratings bonanza in eight simple words: Tonight, Red Eye with special guest Charles Krauthammer.
Think of the comedic potential.

I do not pay for cable service (personal protest) I have to depend on Fox Online and YouTube to watch parts of the funniest, most enjoyable political humor. The mix of guests is beyond belief! REDEYE ROCKS!!!
Ratings bonanza indeed. Charles Krauthammer has the wit and intelligence to consistently overshadow those around him.
Happy New Year!
Redeye is the best comedy news show on television.
Really its the best political commentary show on TV. (except for Bill Shultz)
I tape it if I dont watch it live here in Cali at midnight.
Mud wrestling? I think I'll be changing my New Year's Eve plans.
I am pretty sure that Charles Krauthammer has been a guest on "Red Eye" before.
I dunno, I'm kinda partial to former CIA operative Mike Baker mud wrestling with former British Special Forces soldier, Kevin Godlington, but maybe that's just me.
I enjoy listening to Ann Coulter, but would rather see PAB! And change the mud to oil, and I will be saving that segment forever!!!!
With so much junk on TV, I did not think a DVR was necessary, until I discovered Red Eye and worked my way through the Hulu episodes. Red Eye is my appointment TV, and should be everyones.
Mike Baker is the best. Every time I see him on another Fox show, I keep my fingers crossed that he'll show up later that night on "Red Eye".
GoV : the place you can see the Big Ball drop every day
[I also have a suggestion for a 2010 Red Eye ratings bonanza in eight simple words: Tonight, Red Eye with special guest Charles Krauthammer.]
That would be made of far too much win for a TV to handle.
Just remember, special program usually means a clip show.
I've been with the show from the beginning. It continues to be only TV show that truly makes me laugh. Greg, Bill and Andy are still the best kept secret on television. I am proud of them and Red Eye's continuity. These are some truly funny guys! Who says Roger Ailles doesn't have a wicked sense of humor?
The absolute bestest, brightest, funniest show on TV!
And if you disagree with me you are probably a racist homophobe who hates New Years Eve!
Love the show. Hate the time-slot. Would someone tell Fox there are many that would love to see this as an alternative to Letterman and Conan. How about going up against them for a few weeks? The 2-3 am slot is out for me. If nothing else, maybe Fox can offer some kind of discount coupon for the purchase of a DVR machine? Just a thought.
Red Eye is absolutely must see TV. Who doesn't like to get the lotion and watch a DVRd Red Eye marathon?
Charles Krauthammer is to intelligence what Al Franken is to stupid.
The absolute best show on TV.
Can I just be a scalawag?
Nothing, absolutely nothing, says the end of the MSM better than Red Eye beating CNN prime time at 3 in the morning.
Smells like napalm.
Hey, racist homophobes who hate New Year's Eve are people too, you know!
Fingers strongly crossed for Oderus and a certain someone whose name rhymes with Shmike Shmaker making appearances tonight.
Or what Bill Schulz is to weird.
I wonder if the Red Eye ratings include people like me who Tivo it?
I usually have to watch it on Hulu, as I never can stay up until 2 a.m. The only part I don't like is the constant cut to some animal stunt. I think these are a distraction, but my gerbil Megatron disagrees. Don't you, Megatron? (Megatron flipping in circles) He's a big fan of gerbil acrobatics. Thanks, my gerbil Megatron!
Here I was ready to tune out after FOX New Year's Eve show ended at 12:30 am, now I will lose even more sleep. Thank Red Eyers. Red Eye is the glue which keeps the other shows sane.
Red Eye New Year's Special?
I'll be there with bells on!
(Which is pretty much all I can afford at this point.)
Bet my emu Dynamo could take him in half naked, lubed-up, Greeco-Roman wrestling match.
He kicks my ass regularly. Guess I should stop feeding him Wheaties.
I think it would Rock, but does Charles even stay up that late?
I like the animal clips. I can't seem to get 'Future Cat' out of my mind. (Cat riding a Roomba beats up a big dog)
A lubed-up emu vs. gerbil wrestling match? What is wrong with you? Only Schulz would be interested in those lurid fantasies. Besides, everyone knows emus are vulnerable to the gerbil whirl-kick-eye-socket move. It's real. Look it up.
GJP: Right on. Isn't it nice to have something to laugh with, instead of having to laugh (or cry) at what passes for humor on the other cable stations?
One of my favorite intros to a guest: 'If he were a breathalyzer, I'd blow him on the side of the road while a cop watched.'
Where else can you hear that? I love it!
I don't think Dr. K's been on Red Eye, I've seen many of their shows and can't remember a lowered table (the “leg chair” and others are stools). Gutfeld to towering over someone, for once, would be a visual not easily forgotten. Yeah, that's right—short people have evil, black hearts and regularly lurk under beds, waiting to steal the souls of sleeping children. They must be subjugated at all opportunities, lest they consider themselves worthy of anything other than the scorn from us normals! (Thank God for lifts and big hair)
On a side note, either the notorious PAB or Julie Banderas have the overpowering goodness to cancel out Gutfeld's inherent wickedness and bring a semblance of normalcy on the set. That is, until Bill opens his mouth.
Best Late Night Show Ever. Geek test, Virgin approved.
I know, Dynamo has been intensely studying both the dodge ball Helsinki incident of 1919, and various Bruce Lee/Chuck Noris movies, and is pretty sure he's ready for it.
The question is, is your gerbil ready for the infamous emu screeching death vomit move?
Here's a hint. You can't look it up. No one knows about it because no one's seen it before.
One of the best shows on television. I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the CNN management meeting when the ratings news came across the wires.
G. Gutfeld > J. Stewart
You couldn't pay me enough to be that fly.
All you'd hear is how stupid the viewing public is, and how they have to use government to force people to watch them in order to properly <DEL>indoctrinated</DEL> educated.
Stewart isn't worthy to wash Gut's jock strap.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if he secretly wanted to.
…And finally, I think Gutfeld will become an Objectivist by being around Libertarians.
Time Slot – easily handled with TIVO or DVR. It has to stay where it is – as a prime time show it'd loose its edge.
Now – change Mud to Oil and Ann Coulter to PAB and I'd stay up to watch it live :~)
Actually – no wrestling needed – just have PAB in that Blue Dress with the plunging neckline.
Greg has had so many good intro's for his guests, but the one I always remember was reserved for Mike Baker.
"If brains were the Sunday crossword puzzle,
he'd be really hard, really long, and it would take me all day to do him."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgnotNRAhSM&fe...
The Jill Dobson one was also pretty good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3SXVG2BlNk
Krauthammer does not draw me in to anything. Ever since his ranting against Gibson and The Passion of the Christ, I only tolerate him.
Could we maybe make that a transfat-free oil wrestling match between Ms. Cupp and Ms. Coulter instead? Either way, my money's on Ann.
"Wash?" Or "Lick?"
Common decency and courtesy prevented me from taking the joke to that next step.
Man, I was tempted though. Fingers hovering over the keyboard. Guess I'm getting too old.
You can watch them via Hulu.
What I think is funny is when the Priest is on and they still talk about stuff how they normally would. Try seeing Connan get away with that.
Gotta Love Pinch too… LMAO
Except for Shulz? How can you not love Joanie Cunningham with a perverted bend? He will eventually win you over adn you won't even realize it is happening. I know. It happened to me.
I wish RedEye would interview Baden about some of the claimed ways to die on "1000 Ways to Die".
The wrestling should be between SE Cupp and Rachel Marsden. They look so much alike, but could not be more different. Plus who knows the freak Marsden might pull. Maybe then Marsden and Shulz … for old times.
Caught #RedEye for the first time in late January 2009 and have been hooked ever since. Love the humor, guests, debates, outrageous topics and answers, and it's conservative slant. For this show to have higher ratings than CNN's primetime tells you as much about CNN as it does this show, but this is a real winner. From Baker to PAB, Courtney to Godlington, SE Cupp and Remi Spenser, Jim Norton and Anthony Cumo, this show has it all. Where else can you tune into a show and get an interplanetary correspondant from GWAR sitting beside Father Johnathon. ( Ok, that's got to be creepy for Father J ).
From the leg chair to cleavage shots , Congressman McCotter to various musical groups, this show has it all and I love it. While it would be great to go prime time I would be afraid it would have to tone it down ( and far too much is bleeped-out already ) so I would really like the uncensored versions available for download in the future.
Wish Fox would stop premempting it for every POTUS speech or daytime event, but it's exceptional entertainment. Kudos to Andy, Bill ( the resident leftist ) and Greg, and all those involved in this show. You've done a great job and keep it going !
<font color=red>RedEye</font> reminds me of Hugh Hefner's late night show in the…60's??
Celebrities, dialogue, current, chic.
In your (blind) eye, CNN.
Fantastic show!………. Hip and cool with a conservative take on things. It's sooooo fun to watch.
Great show. Funny, smart, and boy howdy do they get away with a lot! I was shocked when I first started watching and saw people like PAB and John Bolton (!!) appear as guests. I think maybe they just like a chance to be a little "naughty" and of course, they have a good sense of humor. And the regulars know where to draw the line, too–no "mustache rides" jokes for Bolton. Or were there? Ahh, he can take it.
And personally, I don't care when it's on since I have a magical DVR thingie.
Greg Gutfeld is a terrific comedian with exacting timing, but he is also the most insightful interviewer in journalism–print or TV. Each of his interviews is worth watching. His questions are excellent, offbeat and informative while being immensely entertaining. He puts his guests so at ease that they rarely fail to deliver. He asks real questions and gives the guest plenty of time to respond…a refreshing change from the constantly-interrupting "it's all about me" host. (You listening, Bill O'Reilly?)
The best is to have one of your letters read on air and hear Greg's response, which usually involving him doing the writer's mom or sending the writer some squishy organic brownies Greg makes himself.
Great fun. Never miss the show.
Got my shorty robe all laid out waiting for the Red Eye New Year's Eve special to start….
and have the Notorious PAB referee!
and just have PAB in that blue dress for the whole hour. No talking! It just ruins the fantasy.
"Is your gerbil ready for the infamous emu screeching death vomit move?"
Anytime, anyplace!
Plus, I think if you carefully study the tapes from the aforementioned Helsinki incident (did they have tapes in 1919?), you will clearly see that that emu was stepping out of bounds to avoid the final eye socket blow, which is an illegal manuever, and I for one refuse to pit my Megatron against an emu who won't play by the rules.
I'd love to score Gutfeld over Stewart but I'm still ambivalent about the show – though I watch the hulu episodes regularly.
I don't understand why it is any different if it was shown during prime time.
I love the NYT slams.
I don't think the show is usually recorded live, so it probably wouldn't matter.
If Gutfeld and his regulars get bleeped out then he needs to man up and use language appropriate for the venue.
Amen!
Do you know what their reasoning for pulling it is?
Sorry, no response at all, and it's not for lack of effort on our part.
I think the time slot gives them license to be more goofy. If it were prime time it'd be more closely scrutinized by management – and held to a different standard.
Man, sorry to hear they cut it from your lineup. Hate to say it, but it's probably something to do with the agreements they have with the Australian station.
I remember when HuffoPo made the mistake of letting him write a blogg on their site. Didn't take long for them to release they made a BIG mistake. His post were some of the funniest (at the expense of the pretentious twits at HuffPo
).
I'm looking into a Tivo set just so I can record his show.
“I became a conservative by being around liberals. I became a libertarian by being around conservatives.”
My journey exactly.
The NYE show was awesome! I just was hoping it would be a full hour, but it was still really fun. Beck could have waited another 30 minutes.
I hope Red Eye New Years Eve becomes a Fox News tradition.
Can you RedEye fans imagine then when about 8 months ago it suddenly dissapeared from the lineup here in Australia and I believe everywhere else apart from north America. Instead all we get is a repeat of the Fox report which is effectively out of date by that time. Can't get it from Hulu as they also don't allow downloads outside USA.
We have tried everything to get it back on, partitioning Fox etc no response. Demographic wise, there is more RedEye viewers outside America than inside. I though we might have got their New Years show today as it was on our cable guide but instead we got the WS Journal report – Sucks to be us!
I DVR it daily. Watched the New Year's Eve show and wished it was more than 30 minutes. Very entertaining show.
EEEEEWWWWWWWW!
Redeye is awesome and hiliarious and very much pokes in the eyes of political correctness that is poisening this country. It dares to do and say and question what Johnny Carson used to do on a nightly basis, but which none do today. I never miss it.
Best show on television, period. The only appointment TV I watch these days.
Great guests you don't see anywhere else. The Leg Chair and hot Fox anchors. PAB makes my heart-attacked heart feel much better.
A Matthew McConaughey corresponda-hey.
Love my DVR for this show alone.
My next guest cornered the market of "oil futures". Oh, I meant "baby oil futures".
youtube greg when he spoke at berkley. i think it is four parts.
he is spot on.
Patti Anne Browne and Megyn Kelly mud wrestling
Be still my rapidly beating heart!
Great show. I'm disappointed each time it is bumped for a special event.
I thought I saw that FOX has picked up more younger viewers even in the their prime time news shows – if this is true, I wonder if it is because their anchors often appear on Red Eye and reveal themselves to be funny and interesting, and not pompous and full of themselves.
I DVR this show on season pass. It is easily the funniest show on television. Probably the smartest show on TV as well. Continues success to the sickos at 3am.
psst,
It's basically prime time in Europe and morning shows in Asia. ha
I'm at sea for 2/3 of my life and on watch from 12 am to 4 am and Red Eye keeps me sane. And if you disagree with me, it doesn't mean you are a bad person.
