On the Wisdom of an Eleven Year Old Boy in ‘Land of the Lost’
by Mark CoralloA review, in which a father takes full responsibility for not reading the reviews before entering the theater.
This past Friday, my wife and I picked up the kids from their Catholic grade school in Alexandria, Virginia. As the two girls were being dropped at a friend’s house for the day, we decided (on the spur of the moment) to surprise the boy with a trip to the movies. We figured “Land of the Lost” would be harmless enough for an eleven-year-old boy and might provide a few laughs for the adults.
All you need to know is that I was compelled to ask, “What the heck is this rated?” within the first five minutes of the movie. Kids, this was not your father’s “Land of the Lost.” I might have only been about my son’s age when the Sid & Marty Krofft TV show was a Saturday morning staple 30 years ago, but I am 100% sure that I would have remembered it if one of the characters had dropped the F-Bomb.
For 45 minutes, we sat and squirmed and waited for the laughs to come. Instead, we were treated to the little ape man Chaka repeatedly fondling the heroine’s breasts, the dirty sidekick getting hot over two Slestaks of unknown gender preparing to, in his words, “tap that ass,” an extended homoerotic drug scene involving the two male leads and Chaka, and our hero Will Ferrell letting loose with the aforementioned F-Bomb as in “F#!k you, Chaka.” By the way, the movie is rated PG-13. My wife and I were shocked that for the sheer abundance of sexual references, filthy language and breast fondling, it didn’t merit a solid R from the MPAA.
As the parents, we were faced with a dilemma — how best to handle this delicate situation. The theater was packed with teenagers. Our son must have already felt a little embarrassed to arrive with Mom and Dad. To get up and leave might have been worse than grinding it out. I know some of you more perfect parents are thinking, “What dilemma? I’d have stormed out at the first dirty word!” But I’ll hazard a guess that you also would not have been thinking that at 11 years old, your kids are hearing and seeing worse on the school bus. And since we’ve established that our kids (like their parents before them) hear it on the bus or in the cafeteria or in the dugout, then you must accept the possibility that your kids have uttered a few of these choice words themselves. It’s what they think about it all that counts. That’s where the parenting comes in.
At any rate, I kept a close eye on my boy. He’s a smart kid. We talk about these things at home. We talk about language and why gentlemen don’t use dirty language in mixed company or in front of children. I tell him that on occasion, I’ve let loose with a few choice words, but that I strive to use it sparingly. He’s even asked about sex and I’ve been honest about it. Unsurprisingly, he’s never dissolved into a pile of dust. He just feels more comfortable talking to us about whatever is on his mind.
So, at about the 45 minute mark in the movie, he turned to me and said, “We don’t have to stay for any more of this.”
I replied, “Are you sure?”
“Yes, this is awful,” he said.
So we got up and walked out. My wife told me to go and ask for a refund. I told her that it was my fault for not checking the reviews, not the theater’s for not posting a warning.
I learned two valuable lessons that were well worth the $28.00. First, always read the reviews no matter how innocent a movie may seem from the ads, previews or ratings. Second, my son is a very smart boy.
As we were walking out he turned to us and said, “That was dirty, awful and disrespectful to women. It was disrespectful to Mom.”
Good kid, my son. Smarter than his father.
As soon as I got home, I fished out the newspaper and found the reviews. For once, the reviews were as bad as the movie. I also found out that because my son had the maturity to walk out, we missed being treated to the sight of Will Ferrell being eaten by a T-Rex and subsequently excreted by said dinosaur. I owe the boy big time.
Note to Hollywood, most parents will not be as forgiving as I am. I only hope that most eleven-year olds would have the guts to get up and walk out on the crap that Hollywood has grown accustomed to shoveling at them.

Mark – all you really needed to do was check out the fact the movie featured Will Ferrell. This guy really sucks and just continues to get worse.
I've never thought Ferrell particularly funny. So I wont be wasting money on this trash.
It amazes me that Will Ferrell still has a career.
Great post Mark. My kiddos are 13 &10, and I agree w/ you completely. I learned the same lesson a few years ago and now I always read reviews and ask friends about movies before we'll go see anything. And we never go see any flick on the opening weekend… I'll wait a couple weeks on every movie to find out the real story on whether it's kid friendly or not. ….. and I certainly agree w/ Jed, if it's a ferrell movie, it's gonna be bad.
Thanks for this.
Hollywood is truly a sewer pipe.
Mr Corallo you weren' t the only one to have the same reaction to this movie. I went last saturday during the matinee and about half the audience was kids and half were adults. I would estimate before the movie was half over most of the kids and their parents had left the theater. The movie was a disaster. Whoever thought it would be clever to take a child's television program and revision it into an 'adult comedy' with sexual innuendos, drug references, physical humor, and adult language was just not thinking clearly. I won't waste my time and money on another Will Farrell movie.
My opinion, but as a teachable moment it would have been best for you, the parents, to take the initiative rather than waiting for your son to give the cue. No need to subject him, and you, to 40 minutes of garbage. You knew the film was trash ten minutes in. If you were at a typical multiscreen theater you could have simply found another movie to exchange your tickets for–and could have made a point with the management in the bargain.
I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm not. It's gotten to where Hollywood seems to think that gore, sex, language, violence, or special effects or a combination of the five can replace story-telling and good acting anymore. Nothing replace those. I've played more engaging video games than I've seen movies.
Excellent post. You should be very proud of your son… he sounds like a mature, intelligent young man.
Hmmmmm…. Will Feral as T Rex excrement.. How will you know he's acting?
Thanks for this review. I will take the kiddoes to watch "Up" again, perhaps.
I think he explained all of that, and regretted not leaving sooner.
You seem not to have done too well in the reading comprehension category.
We had the same moment in Ferrell's "Talladega Nights". We made it to Ricky Bobby's prayer at the dinner table before my teenage son said, "This is trash. Let's go." And, yes, I should have said it before he did.

Mr Corallo,
You seem to have raised a good young man there. I think it is easy for us to forget how sharp kids can be. I am constantly surprised by my son and he is only 3. Your son (and your wife and you) deserve a lot of credit.
Ferrell has not been funny since SNL (and it was hit or miss then). That may be blasphemy for some, but cerally, the dude is not funny.
I knew the movie would be bad. I just hoped it would be fun. I'm disappointed, but not surprised.
And how will they get Ferrell's smell off the excrement?
Smart boy you have, there. Seems he knows a good (or in this case, bad) movie when he sees one.
Will Ferrell's brand of comedy is moronic. Anyone who thinks his jokes are funny passes the moron test with flying colors.
There's a great resource for parents who want to screen movies for their kids: http://www.kids-in-mind.com. I give blow-by-blow descriptions of what objectionable material is in a movie and gives a 0-10 rating in three categories: sex, violence, and language. I check it whenever I want to take my kids to a movie.
Leave it to Hollywood and Will Ferrell to turn what was a fun kid's show into Porky's…..
Hey, here's an idea Hollywood, come up with something original for once. Take a page out of DisneyPixar and make something with some thought behind it instead of pumping out lousy remakes and charging an arm and a leg to go see it in the theaters…..
How long before they do a Sigmund and the Seamonsters porno??
A Will Ferrell movie a completed stinking pile of turds?? Really? Who'd thunk? /sarcasm off
"I think he explained all of that, and regretted not leaving sooner. "
Yup.
"You seem not to have done too well in the reading comprehension category."
Who p**d in your Wheaties this morning? Uh, I mean, easy on the sarcasm, there Hoss. It was just an opinion.
That's an insult to Porky's. This was more like Porky's 2, same thing you've seen before, just done in a less funny way. I kept hoping to see a laugh or two, sadly I gave up and started rooting for the dino to put Ferrell out of all our misery and then gave up on the movie completely.

I am proud of your son and he isn't even my son. Will Farrell must be crashing and burning somewhere. The only thing that keeps him afloat is the ocean of Bushhate he has with him since his play in New York. What comes round' goes round. Karma is a you know what…

Good point. I'll pass on this one….
Karma is a Megan Fox??
It's so refreshing to hear about kids that are much smarter than the movies that are supposedly designed to appeal to them. Tells you how dumb Hollywood really is. Congratulations, Mark, on raising such a good kid.
I feel your pain, Mark Corallo. Why anyone would pay money to see Will Ferrell is beyond me.
And KUDOS to your kid! If only the hollyweirdo producers had half of his youthful wisdom, this world would be a much nicer place.
In general, I don't go to the theater much anymore. I refuse to be abused like that, nor do I wish to put dollars into the pockets of hollyweird loon toon moonbats so they can further trash this nation to the applause of snooty, anti-American furriners.
In particular, Hollywood needs to be class-action sued for false advertising, and wasting everyone's time under the guise of 'entertainment'.
Boycott, Will Ferrell is a sleaze ball, whose best days are behind him, keep your money in your pocket and maybe he’ll go away? All you liberals will need to see these movies 3 or 4 times each to save your hero’s.
I thought about deleting it, but nah. it is still what i think.
I was interested in personally seeing the movie because of my familiarity with the original. You just saved me the money and the wasted time. Thanks.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this movie was a stinker. It's been eons since I've seen the original TV show, but I sat in the theater wondering if it could've possibly been as dirty and stupid as this movie.
BTW, I was convinced to go by Ebert's thumbs up on this movie. Teaches me not to read the review first.
Is it just me or does Will seem a bit addled to you all, you know like he has suffered brain damage. I am not kidding, he seems to really be out of it.
Ebert seems to slipped into senility.
You must be very proud of your son. I have like a few Will Ferrell movies, but very few – maybe "Elf" and the one where he is a figure skater. The rest I have despised. I see my "friends" all the time quoting his movie lines and I just don't get it, especially the ones from "Talladega Nights." We couldn't finish that movie.
I really need to proofread before I hit submit. I should have said that I have "liked" a few W. Ferrell movies.
Sadly, that appears to be true. Too bad, because I always rather liked Ebert, and relied on his judgment for years.
bravo JimBob and Hank!
awesome story, thanks.
Mr. Corallo you are a lucky man and a lucky father. Congrats to your wife and you for doing a great job with your kid. A good rule of thumb is to avoid Will Ferrell movies like they are toxic waste. Like many people, I have been sucked into his films ("Talledaga Nights", "Semi-Pro", "Blades of Glory") with increasingly teeth-grinding results. Last month I was confined to the house with bronchitis and I rented several videos to help pass the time. One of them was "Step-Brothers" which was so mind-numbingly awful that I actually became angry; not just bored, but mad as hell. If I hadn't been so sick I would have marched back to the video store and demanded my three bucks back. (On reflection I decided the fault was mine.) Boycotting Will Ferrell films may not save civilization but it isn't a bad place to start.
looks funny to me, i'm still going to see it. why would you take your kid to a will ferrel movie if you find this type of material so bad????
Step-Brothers was just awful. We watched about ten minutes of it before we had to turn it off. A truly horrible movie. I won't be watching any more Will Ferrel movies.
Well, back in the day, the Catholic's all read "The Catholic Telegraph" which had movie reviews, and even "condemned" a movie now and then. So my Mom always knew what movies I wasn't allowed to see. But I guess when kids are watching "Two and a Half Men" reruns on local TV at 6pm and they know who Lindsay, Britney, and Kobe Bryant are, the landscape has changed soimewhat.
Wait, a movie that looks okay for a pre-teen but is actually totally inappropriate? I sympathize, but I'm not surprised. All I can say, and I really do mean this with respect, is buckle your seatbelts and plug your ears, kids! We're about to land in the 21st Century!
First person to invent a time machine that will take me back a few decades, let me know, okay?
Thanks to the needless toilet humor, the Land of the Lost movie only resembles the original is superficial terms. Land of the Lost could have been a decent film had the director, writers, & Will Farrell stayed out of the toilet. They missed the whole point of Land of the Lost completely. It's about family. This could have been another Up, but they just killed the film out of the gate with stupid toilet humor.
Land of the Lost came in at #3 opening week; therefore, this movie will quickly vanish & be on DVD by the Fall. It's a stinker in every way.
PG-13 has become R-lite. Call me old-fashioned but I don't want 14-17 year-olds hearing the f-word. It has come to the point where I have added PG-13 movies to the list of blocked movies on my home cable system. The sad part is that the questionable content in these films does little or nothing for the actual story.
Even when it is necessary for the telling of the story, like when Bruce Almighty dropped the f-bomb live on the air after finding out his rival had been named the new anchorman, it can be beeped out. The f-word was beeped out in Bruce Almighty and the audience still got the gist of what happened and the story did not suffer at all.
Why alienate potential paying movie-goers with this stuff?
One of the guys from "Ghost Hunters" tweeted that it was possibly the worst movie he's ever seen. Having watched the original show back in the '70s, I knew this would be absolute garbage just from the trailer.
While I am not personally offended by sexual and toilet humor, I still don't like them. I consider it a sign of lazy storytelling. This is why most of my favorite movies these past few years have either been Pixar movies or movies from the 1940s and 50s.
Incidentally, I thought Land of the Lost looked like garbage from the trailers. There wasn't one laugh. To me, it looked like another unoriginal, unfunny, hyperactive movie. From your anecdote, it looks like I was right.
Kudos to your smart son. Seriously. My daughter has that kind of sense and it is heartwarming to see them making wise choices so young.
Regarding Will Ferrell movies. you are taking a risk seeing his films, but not always. In Elf, he plays a clean version of his usual clueless character. I also liked him in the Bewitched movie.
Congratulations, it sounds like you've done an excellent job raising your sons. My 16 year old daughter would be more likely to sneak around on me to see it.
Much like newspapers across the country going belly-up, Boston Globe next over the precipice, Hollywood is telling us what they THINK we should see, instead of what we actually want to see. The disconnect between these elite bunglers and not just mainstream America, but virtually all of America is the only epic story left.. A few more years of this and the megaplex movie theaters will be empty.
Will Ferrell as excrement? Sounds like typecasting to me.
You can even check Netflix, if you have an account. It has this movie marked as:
"Iffy for 14+ For crude and sexual content, and for language including a drug reference "
I don't know why some movies seem to have been carefully crafted to appeal to precisely nobody.
It's obviously not serious enough to appeal to adults, and it's too offensive for kids. If it's aimed at teens, is there any evidence that any teenagers are even familiar with The Land of the Lost?
The Chiller and Sci-Fi Channels have been airing the original Land of the Lost television episodes the last few weeks if you want to see them. I used to watch them as a child and loved them. Now, my kids can watch them and they're just as entertaining now as they were then. Even the special effects of that time period are entertaining to watch! The sleestack are as creepy as ever, but the kids can handle that. I had forgotten how wholesome the show was—-probably because kids shows nowadays are NOT wholesome.
It is worth noting that Ferrell's greatest financial success was "Elf", a wholesome film for the whole family. No reason why this film shouldn't have been made in the same vein. But in Hollywood these days, the box office strangely does not seem to be the highest priority. Obviously, art isn't too important either, or why would they be remaking a goofy TV show like LotL? Nope, most important to be cool with his buds. Joining the Bash Bush Bandwagon years late and putting dirty jokes in what many would reasonably assume is a family film matters more than making money for his investors or making a film of true value.
If you want to see a good Will Ferrell movie, rent "Stranger than Fiction". It is not a kids movie, but it is good.
I check all my movies at http://previewonline.org/
I like a review that includes an estimate of entertainment value as well as appropriateness.
Great read. With a child like yours maybe there is hope for America's future.
That said, I gotta say I am pissed that Hollywood took another one of my childhood memories and raped it…I'd love to meet the casting director for this movie so I could (Quoting Cartman) "Kick Him In The Nuts"…
Note to Hollywood: Lay off the dope and have an original thought already……….
One last thing……….Can we officially "Stick A Fork" in Will Ferrells career?????
You're kidding right? I apologize if you're only seventeen or eighteen, but Land of the Lost was a show that many of us watched when we were kids. It was a harmless kids fantasy show with both prehistoric and sci-fi elements.
So why would anyone old enough to remember it expect it to be a (possibly campy) version of the source material? Do you mean to say that there is a warning right up there on the MPAA ratings board that says that if Ferrell's in it then it must be adult-oriented?
The guy mea-culpa'ed for his lack of looking over the reviews, but I think the onus is more on those who use a kid-friendly brand to market something completely different.
If you are only 17 or 18, maybe you can hang around with the author's kid for a while. Maturity could be just around the corner.
Thank you all for your comments. I must (somewhat sheepishly) admit that other than his cameo in "Wedding Crashers," I haven't seen Will Ferrell in anything. So I really had nothing to go on other than the expectation that like many movie stars, he was doing a movie his kids (assuming he has kids?) could watch. As a side note, one evening last week my wife picked up the phone — this is what I heard her say: "I don't remember." "6 months? Nope." "Same. Sorry." "What was that all about?" I asked. "Telephone survey. They wanted to know what the last movie I saw in the movie theater was; if I had been in the last 6 months; How about my husband?"
Let me just say that, as a parent of three boys all 11 or under…I hear where everyone is coming from. I constantly battle with them over watching "inappropriate" shows/movies…I'm losing, of course. But I keep trying. That being said, I love Will Ferrell. Shoot me. Not everything he does mind you, but a lot of it. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is brilliant. I'm not arguing about it…the movie was, and still is, hilarious. It's arguably the most quotable comedy of the decade. Elf…as has been mentioned was great. His "Frank the Tank" in Old School is a classic character and he steals the movie from Piven and Wilson. I'll not waste anyone's time on how many classic characters he brought to life on SNL. Suffice to say that More Cowbell was the funniest skit ever on that show thanks to Will.
BTW, his characters name in Jay and Silent Strike Back (2001) was Marshall Willenholly. I think the Land of the Lost remake was already inevitable.
Praise the Lawd for dat!
OOOHHHH OHHHHHHH Count me in!
You ever see Man of the Century?
It was made in 1999, and I see it as an attempt to show what Hollywood has lost since its Golden Years.

Great post and whatta discerning kid you have thanks wise supervision! I've walked out of several movies in my day and FYI, theaters usually won't give refunds, at least in my experience, after the first ten minutes.
Hate it when I or an escort ends up paying for lousy movies. Reading the reviews on the front end, laborious as it can be, is a good preventative.
You wannnn braindamgae? Explain my careeeeerrrr….
Just a couple thoughts…
-Horror fans seem to hate PG-13 but for completely different reasons. They feel many PG-13 horror movies SHOULD be rated R but are cut so they can make more money with a PG-13 rating, then come out with an UNRATED DVD with all the gory stuff put back in.
-I believe PG-13 movies are allowed one use of the F word as long as it's not in a sexual context. Some even get away with two. And there is an appeals process where filmmakers can dispute their rating. Clerks was rated NC-17 for dialogue alone (there's no violence or sex) but was re-rated R.
-PG movies seemed to have a lot more profanity, sex, and violence as recently as 30 years ago. Some even had nudity (of course I'm thinking of Logan's Run and Airplane!). PG-13 was actually developed in 1984 because of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins, both of which were too hard for a PG but not hard enough for an R. The first official PG-13 movie was Red Dawn.
-I remember watching Beetlejuice as a kid (which is PG but would probably be PG-13 now) and he says the F word ("Nice f—ing model!"). I survived.
-There are even R-rated movies that I feel should be PG-13. The one that comes to mind is Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You, which is rated R for ONE use of the F word in a song. The R rating puts this otherwise harmless film into the same category as Pulp Fiction and Basic Instinct. Something ain't right with the MPAA – that much we can agree on.
Obviously movies are rated PG-13 for many different reasons. I haven't seen Land of the Lost (no interest though I like Anna Friel in Pushing Daisies) but it would seem they advertised it as a family movie when it wasn't. I don't think the filmmakers felt they were purposely alienating anyone, though a movie that is supposed to be funny and isn't sure doesn't help.
Good kid, a credit to his father.
Not only was his character name Marshall Willenholly, I think you can see on his car that it's Sleestak County!
And I like Ferrell too but I admit I haven't been interested in his most recent films. I thought Steve Carrell was the funniest thing in Anchorman. Old School and Elf were good and, of course, we'll always have cowbell.
Okay, going against the grain.
I like Will Farrell. But then again, I haven't seen Step Brothers, Blades of Glory, or Land of the Lost.
Probably will skip Land of the Lost because there's other stuff to watch.
Mark,
Totally off-topic, but… is the school by any chance Blessed Sacrament at King and Quaker streets? That's where I went as a kid. The Centre theater was around the corner, just up from Presto Valet.
I would actually attribute much of Elf's success to director Jon Favreau, who of course is now the director of the Iron Man films. He seemed to understand it. I remember reading one of his goals at the time was to, NOT make fun of, but to pay tribute to the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials he (and many of the people here) grew up on.
Mark Corallo, I think this speaks to the good training your children are receiving in your home. When a child will take the initiative to remove himself from a bad environment, it speaks volumes about what his learning environment is like.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Or how do you know where the excrement ends and Ferrell begins?
Seems like the most effective form of camouflage in existence.
St. Mary's Old Town. But we do play CYO basketball at Blessed Sacrament!
I usually use imdb.com for a plot synopsis. My 13-year-old now saves everyone time and goes there first, and doesn't bother asking to see some films after reading their synopsis, since she knows what I'll permit and what I won't.
The Hollywood industry model collapse: imminent
I watched King Vidor's 1928 silent movie "The Crowd" last week on TCM. When Robert Osborne introduced it he noted that Vidor hid cameras in crates, etc to catch New York City in its natural state. Since I really enjoy historical stuff such as this I watched the movie, not expecting much (silent movie, having to read a bunch while being distracted from the image, overacting, etc.). I couldn't tear myself away from the movie for an instant. With this simple technology and minimal text Vidor evoked humor, pathos, strong interest in the characters, and he kept it moving. A truly outstanding movie.
I also watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall last week. I tried really hard to like this movie but alas, I failed miserably. Is the writers' strike still going on? Is there also an editors' strike?
I was angry enough that they would make a movie out of this, even angrier that they would make it a comedy – the TV show played it straight. I can't tell you how disappointed I am that this piece of will ferrel will make money.

He fell off the beam when Gene Siskel died, and completely converted to monnbat.
Ferrell is yet to make a movie that is even remotely funny or entertaining. If the charge to see one of his movies was only a nickel, it would still be four cents too much, the same applies to Jack Black, two no-talent, vulgar hacks trying to pass themselves off as actors.
Bottom line is that the ratings are bunk, and parents shouldn't use them as the basis for allowing their kids to be exposed to a film. That is why I like websites that give parents guidance on movies based on CONTENT!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
You owe me a keyboard…..
Jack Black has got to be the most annoying person on the planet. After about 2 minutes of exposure to his antics I want to climb a bell tower with a deer rifle.
That being said, he was hilarious in Tropic Thunder…..
Ferrell's unfunny, left-wing prattling in the form of his recent Broadway show has forever alienated him from conservative or Republican Americans, representing at least 40% of potential movie-goers. This must be factored by you Hollywood pinheads next time you think about bank-rolling another piece of dreck starring Ferrell. Drop dead, Will.
Occasionally we are given a rare glimpse into the future. Like all parents, I'm sure you have wondered what kind of man your son will be, and now you know. He will be a leader.
You should have asked for your money back because this is the only way the theater gets feedback.
Regardless, a PG-13 movie should not contain the F word. Perhaps the MPAA needs to be sued for allowing this film a PG-13 rating. I have friends in the industry, and in order to get a rating they have to sign contracts with the MPAA, and are liable for changing content once a film has been rated.
I think Will Ferrell has become what Chevy Chase was in the late 80's and early 90's; if surrounded by a good cast, with a good writer, he can bring teh funneh. But, on his own, the man is T-Rex excrement
So Joef asks questions that were already answered and gets 3 points.
Buck wheat calls him on it and gets dinged.
Artboy says Buck should chill out and let the guy's opinion go and gets 3 points
and buck defends himself by sticking to his opinion and gets a negative score.
what's up with that?
I accidentally took my kids to this movie when "Up" was sold out. I figured it was based on the old TV show–hey dinosaurs, cool. Wrong. It was horrible, and worse than inappropriate for children. Bad language, drugs, sexual jokes and innuendoes…. There was nothing in here that was appropriate for kids, nothing at all. What age range was this movie trying to appeal to? It was too stupid and juvenile for adults, too adult for children. I'm still angry I wasted my money on this junk.
Actually, the LOTL remake is bombing at the box office despite heavy marketing
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big_picture/2...
So, expect Ferrell latest to be on DVD in a month.
Plus 1, Hank!
He has terminal BDS.
Which coincidentally, the longer the Won is pres, I am finding easier to understand. I haven't made up my mind whether or not I will descend into a full blown case of ODS, or trot it out as a strategic weapon from time to time.
yeaaaaaaahhhhhhhh…GITTER DONNNNNE!!!!
Who told Will Ferrell he was funny?
What, everyone's forgotten about how wretched my films were? Oh yeah…
A contrarian view here. Saw the movie last Friday night (after hearing net chatter that it wasn't the lame family adventure film the previews were selling, anyone remember the dismal Lost in Space film?) I thought it was well above average for a teenager flick. The f-bomb is pantomimed and possibly one of the best uses of the word in movie history. CGI, puppeteering and set design work wonderfully to create a fun to watch fantasy world. All three of the leads do great work. I guess to me this is a true PG-13 flick, unlike the Dark Knight's nihilistic fantasy world or the oversexed and weird Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist the film does little real harm and pokes fun at things teenage boys are already thinking about with gleeful aplomb. Trashing this when the truly harmful Bruno is coming around the bend enticing young kids to check it out seems a waste of effort. Go see this movie if you still look through joke books or find flatulence has its place in society.
Big deal…I'VE alienated more Republicans/conservatives than that Will Ferret or any liberal pinhead could HOPE to!
I have seen the reviews: I didn't think this would be good from the trailers, and this just confirms my first impressions.
It's interesting that even bright children can see the "T-Rex" excrement that seems to be a Ferrell Film.
Regarding the T-Rex scene…..isn't it interesting to see that even a dinosaur can't stomach Will Ferrell?
(Sorry, I couldn't resist
Chevy Chase has been more worthless than GM stock since the 90s…
Plus 2, Hank!
I loved the campy "Land of the Lost" and when I saw it was being made into a film, I was pleased. But I never go to a movie without first visiting Big Hollywood and one of the reviewers here said it was as awful as this article suggests, tho' not for the same reasons.
Will Ferrell. I've never seen him in anything that I thought he was even passable save once and I can't remember the movie, only that he had a cameo in which he was a prisoner in the slammer. His cameo in "Wedding Crashers" was embarrassing to watch. The film was a hoot and I laughed my head off, but Ferrell was so bad he brought the film to a crashing halt with his performance. Once he was off the screen, it took off again.
Exactly.
They panicked when they realized it was a retread of a forgettable series and turned full control over to Ferrell.
What you're seeing here is what he is.
Emptiness.
That's when I turned off the movie, too. I just couldn't take it anymore. That movie was nothing but pure garbage. I haven't seen anything of Ferrell's since.
I gave Buckwheat a plus one for sticking to his opinion. Gotta respect that. Plus I like pretty much everything Buckwheat has written. I just didn't think Joef came across as troll-ish or combative.
Much love to BuckwheatPicard. Happy?
Everything in your post was exactly what I was thinking. My boys wanted to see the movie- I told them I don't give my money to Bush haters like Ferrell- but I broke down because I remembered the TV show. Like you I didn't check the reviews. What a total piece of garbage! I wish I had the wisdom to leave. This just reaffirms everything I believe about Hollywood and Ferrell. It's sad because everyone I know thinks I'm a nut because I don't want my kids to see this stuff! Why are people so stupid? Popular culture is such garbage!
"(Ferrell is) in danger of becoming the comedy equivalent of George Clooney, someone who enjoys a great deal of goodwill but who isn't actually a real movie star."
That is THE classic definition of what's wrong with Hollywood right now. It genuinely believes ITS 'goodwill' is the same as the audience's. Meme to Hollywood – you're as 'lost' as Ferrell's movie. Good riddance to the both of you.
My thoughts exactly…ferrell can only play one part…ferrell. It's always the same joke again & again. He was funny the first time, and never again. Now I just pity both him & the audience
The multiplex managers are usually low level managers In large corporations, with very little say as to what movie is shown. I doubt making a point with the manager would have done much good, as they have very little power to change things.
Excrement…the same part ferrell always plays…
I like Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies as well. I'll stick to watching the last episode of that and hope she's soon in a movie I actually want to see.

Obviously, art isn't too important either, or why would they be remaking a goofy TV show like LotL?

In the right hands, there's a lot of potential in the source material. A family travels to and has to survive in a land filled with dinosaurs and other, unknown creatures. Throw in the old "the family was falling apart until they bond in the Land of the Lost" if you must (but, please don't). Sadly, this movie will kill any chance of a good, respectful film being made from it.
Wow, I have fans! (?)
I feel like Sally Fields at the Oscars.
I have told my wife she has poor taste in men, I cant help but think you guys suffer the same malady. (problem for those of you in Rio Linda)
lolz
as it was said in another BH thread, as long as he trashes Bush, Hollywood and Broadway will still give this idiot work.
My mom gave me the ODS tag today. She might be right, but I seem more reasonalbe than any BDSer.
That's the thing with Ferrell. His films that he doesn't do the "will ferrell" character, he does better at. They just don't do as well at the box office.
No, Ferrell's career will go on. Becasue of the success of Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and John Belushi, all former SNLers will be given a chance at a movie career. The only one who has totally failed at it is Jimmy Fallon. But now he's stinking it up on Late Night.
This movie was roundly panned. You are in the majority this time. It was rated PG-13 and aimed at boys-13 year old boys (of all ages) will find much to laugh at.
I'll second the screenit.com recommendation – the site's outstanding. And you aren't getting someone's opinion – they list it all out for you – the bad language, sexual innuendo, bad behavior, everything.
If you don't register and pay for premium service, you have to wait a week to access new movies, but everything you'd want to know going in, they tell you.
I thought the whole second half of wedding crashers was a turn for the worse-the first half was some of the best filmed comedy in some time though…Honestly this is one of those films that seems to universally accrue ill will for no good reason. Have you ever seen My Science Project or any of those fantasy-comedy hybrids the 80s seemed so potent a breeding ground for? If you liked those this is a good movie. I wonder if everyone here would be trashing Gremlins for its trouncing of Santa Claus if the clock was wound back…Though to keep this on track- not for young children-! PG-13 suits the film fine though
With apologies to those in the business I must ask :LAND OF THE LOST??? Are you kidding me?? And Wil Farrell: Now there's a guy with a tremendous amount of class (sarcasm engaged)! Unfortunately, it seems that in order to sell films mainstream Hollywood has decided to push all envelopes when it comes to taste. I think it's entirely possible that you should have asked for your money back. Eventually things like people asking for their money back make it back to the studios. They lose money, they don't make those investments in the future–maybe! With Obama bailing everyone out, who knows–but that's another post.
I have been using http://www.screenit.com for years and have appreciated it. It's so much better to walk into the theater knowing what to expect, or better yet knowing to avoid a movie altogether.
If Will Ferrell in it it isn't worth watching. His childish mental illness is disgusting for a full grown adult.
I totally disagree. He might luck into it with a good cast, directors and writers (Bewtiched had it and it was a big old bust). But the movies that make (or as of Land of the Lost, MADE) money is the Ferrell as a moron movies.
I'm sure that I've seen Ferrell in something funny. I can't remember what, but I'm sure that I have. What has happened to him?
And what were they thinking? Those of us who are the right age for LotL *nostalgia* are in our mid-forties. And while I'll cop to thinking "Don't Mess with the Zohan" was mostly funny, potty and sex humor is generally for a younger crowd. And from the sounds of it, they missed the target for kids who might be brought to the movie by parents who remembered it and who might like the adventure as well.
What does that leave? Older teens and mid-twenty males who have never even heard of Land of the Lost?
(disclaimer : I didn't like Land of the Lost when I was a kid because it was too scary.)
[...] Walk out. Don’t go. It’s gratuitously sexualized crap. [...]
If I had to guess, I'd say WF was enjoying some herb on the side–in addition to phoning in his performance. His work was uneven. This whole movie seemed about as smoky as a Cheech and Chong movie.
You took the words right out of my mouth Jed, or fingers.
I can't understand how ferrell is where he is at today, he has ZERO acting talent and always plays in the stupidest movies.
LOL..Priceless..
Will Ferrell ruined Land of the Lost
http://michellemalkin.com/2009/06/09/will-ferrell...
Son of a beach?
Eh, Will Farrell is good for his intended audience.
The dumb part is that this movie should not have ever been aimed at Will Farrell's audience. His audience is all about crude humor and dumb jokes and they'll eat that stuff up, but that's not what Land of the Lost was ever about. It's like sitting down to a remake of Psycho and having it be a campy drama starring the Olsen twins. Just…no.
Really just a bad use of a license more than anything else.
If you want to know exactly what is in a movie (like curse words, blasphemy, nudity, whatever) do what we do and check out plugged in online. Not only do they review movies, but they tell you what bad words are said. Its been a great resource, but it means that we rarely see movies these days. Not a loss in our book though.
The only movie I think Will Farrell did a good job in was Stranger than Fiction and that only because it was a straight man role.
If he would quit doing comedy he might be a good actor. His comedy work however is like cat urine strained though radioctive pus from a horse's ruptured rear end pimple. But I don't have any strong feelings on the subject.
No, I haven't! But I probably will! Thanks!
I have an 11 year old son as well, and I could feel your pride when reading your article. Your son sounds as grounded and wholesome as my own, and it's so reassuring to know that not every child has succumbed to the stupidity shoved down their throats by the entertainment industry. Keep instilling values in those kids!

Man, I thought Will Ferrel may have finally been in a decent movie. I love the old LOTL show. A bit bummed out, but thankful for the heads-up.
please tell me WHY you would take a 11-year old to a PG-13 movie? These ratings are there for a reason. I do agree that the marketing for this movie appears to be aimed at the younger than 13.
sounds like your kid is a loser and just wanted to bail from the movie because all of his friends were making fun of him and he was embarrassed by his parents.
I'm sure its a terribly stupid movie. That being said, I am not sure how all things crass are disrespectful to women.

Why would there be the F-bombs & crude sexual jokes in a PG-13 movie? These would qualify the movie to have an R-rating in the past. If you read the article, you would know the answer to your rhetorical question.
I can only hope that one day I'll be able to raise a child with such sensibility and respect for himself, women, and his parents. Instead of being discouraged by the overwhelming moral decline of our society, I am heartened by the small victories I see in people like your son.
What do you mean "I'm losing"? Are you a parent or not? What kind of men do you want your sons to become?
I mean, there's too many sources out there. I can't hover over my kids 24/7. While I can certainly choose not to take them to a movie like this, there's still TV and the internet…and school…and friends houses. I live in reality…not a vacuum. What I can do is talk to them, reiterate what's appropriate and what isn't…and turn the station when I can. I just can't be there all the time…it's not possible. Kids aren't stupid…at least mine aren't. Trust me, my boys will be fine men…

I agree totally with regards to WIll Farrell. When he is given too much rein he is nothing but a foul mouthed moronic 12 year old.
As to the forgettable series I have to disagree, this movie has a lot of talk when the word came down they were going to start production, Many of the Movie sites and blogs were excited about revisiting a series that a lot of us remember from the late 70's, myself included. But the moment they announce Will Ferrell was involved all interest was dropped by the die hard Land of the Lost Crowd and hopefully the ticket sales will refelct that.
You get a free f-bomb in a PG-13. Any more, they make you R. Most any PG-13 any more has one, to be "edgy."
That your 11 year old thought it was disrespectful to his mother is outstanding, and I give you that credit. Thanks for raising him the way you are. Perhaps you write a comlumn about what you're doing right, so some idiot parents can take note.
My boyfriend and I were talking about seeing this movie as we faithfully watched as children. I will be suggesting we not go see this one, especially after reading this.
I don't doubt the movie stinks. It's probably just not funny, and that would be true even without the swearing and sexually-charged scenes. (I must admit, however, that an "extended homoerotic drug scene. . . featuring Chaka" sounds brilliant on paper.)
What boggles me about the offended father is that he claims he should have checked movie reviews before taking his 11-year-old son to see it. Yet, apparently, he couldn't even be bothered to the check the movie's rating on the marquee before walking in. Hasn't greater tweaking of the ratings system been specifically a preoccupation of conservative audience members, like Corallo?
Yet, like a good Republican, he uses his review to not only dress down the starring performance of famous W-lampooner, Will Ferrell, but to play victim to the Hollywood smut factory. He makes it sound like he was tricked into screening the film. "What the heck is this rated?" he gripes. Then he tells us: PG-13.
Isn't the "13" part of the PG-13 rating exactly the thing that should make an uptight parent like Corallo wary of taking his not-yet-13 kid into the theater, regardless of whether he's had time to read Michael Medved's cautionary appraisal?
Jeez, imagine he was raising his boy in the 1970's, when the now-sanitized PG-rating was often bestowed on movies that featured the bare female breasts that would have disrespected Mr. Corallo's son's mom.

Wasn't Land of the Lost "ruined" to begin with? Quit trying to claim 70s camp junk like this is somehting sacred!
Why don't you go to your home on WHORE ISLAND!!!
Will Ferrell ruined Curious George. No surprise they would pick him to ruin Land of the Lost
I watched Land of the Lost as a kid. What as shame that a fun Saturday morning kids show has been remade into this garbage. What's next for Will Ferrell, the erotic adventures of Pufnstuf? (Oops, better not give him ideas.) Anyway, good for your son.
I had a similar moment taking my 12-year-old daughter to the most profane movie I've ever seen: South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut.
We stayed through it, though it was painful. If I hadn't been with my daughter, I probably would have liked it.
You could have walked out the second you or your family were offended. Instead you chose to stick around for the duration? You got something out of that movie alright, even if only a false sense of superiority and some fuel for your dull right wing outrage. This article is as pathetic as Will Ferrel's acting chops. Feeble.
I have to agree with Joef.
I know the point of your post is that you are an idiot for not checking the reviews and content first but … you are seriously an idiot for not checking the reviews and content first.
And have you been living under a ROCK since PG-13 was introduced as a rating? PG-13 doesn't mean "Come on in if your kids are 11!" It is a rating that is only used to get more viewers in to see borderline R rated movies. "Parents Are Strongly Cautioned." You can't tell me this is the first sexually suggestive PG-13 movie you have ever seen. You can't tell me you haven't heard the F-bomb in a PG-13 before. I love it when parents try to blame Hollywood for their mistakes Maybe you should all go see the PG-13 Year One this week and blame Hollywood for how awful that is for your kids too.
Come on. Do your due diligence, people. Remember, Pixar and Disney are in "Hollywood" also.
LOL … Bush Haters. You mean there are still people who think he was actually good for the country??
lol. that was a funny read. The need for some people to be above things is amazing. How "dirty" language is somehow wrong is beyond me. Sure the movie was crap, but just reading this review and how the father gets home to check out the newspaper is hilarious. Just plays into this huge stereotype.
I have to say that the minute I found out Ferrell was in it, I lost all hope for a trip down memory lane. The man is not funny, just an idiot.
I'm really disappointed to hear this because I grew up on Land of the Lost and was excited about the remake, that is, until I saw Will F starring in it. Don't get me wrong because I enjoy some of his movies BUT I had a feeling he wasn't right for this one.
