Seeing the Duke in a Whole New Light
by Mary Claire KendallFor navel-gazing Republicans, in the throes of a full-blown identity crisis, the 30th anniversary of John “Duke” Wayne’s passing this June 11th, couldn’t come sooner, reminding us of what it was like when giants were in our midst.
The Duke, still ranked Americans’ all-time favorite film star, whose popularity only increases with time, was an “extremely close friend” of Ronald Reagan, said their close mutual friend, longtime Paramount Executive, A.C. Lyles.
Both “Duke” and “Ronnie” shared a clear moral vision concerning America’s greatness-only using force to liberate not conquer, as President Reagan characterized it five years, almost to the day, after Duke’s death, in his poignant tribute to the “Boys of Pointe du Hoc” on June 6, 1984, commemorating D-Day, in which, Lyles said, “he just spoke from the heart.”
“Here, in Normandy,” said Reagan, “… the Allies stood and fought against tyranny, in a giant undertaking unparalleled in human history.”
“When people saw (Duke) on the screen” in movies like The Longest Day, about the Normandy Invasion, Lyles said, “they always wanted to be on his side because they knew that under (his) leadership… they were going to be on the winning team. He was Americana.” Like Reagan, “he made us all proud to be Americans.”
Sadly, Duke Wayne, who stumped on the campaign trail for his friend, helping him reach the pinnacle of American politics, left the stage before Reagan assumed the presidency.
There Reagan would effect in the present what Duke re-enacted in motion pictures.
But, he didn’t do it alone.
Reagan soon became friends with someone who cut an even larger figure on the world stage with whom he shared the same simple, yet large values, based on safeguarding the dignity and rights of man, which Fascism and then Communism had brutally undercut.
His friend-none other than Pope John Paul II-became, according to Nancy Reagan, his closest friend, sharing with him the same vision of defeating Communism without firing a shot. Indeed, as Martin and Annelise Anderson reveal in their new book, Reagan’s Secret War, his ultimate goal was to rid the world of the nuclear threat, which is now more relevant than ever.
While Duke’s artistry brought to life hard-fought victories over Fascism, Reagan and the Pope engaged in this epic battle against Communism as history was unfolding.
Amazingly, Reagan-having helped liberate oppressed peoples behind the Iron Curtain-died almost 25 years to the day after Duke passed away.
Both represented a continuum of values evoked by Reagan’s words, speaking of the “Boys at Pointe du Hoc,” many in the audience, that “It was faith and belief, it was loyalty and love” impelling them to scale those Normandy cliffs.
“All of you loved liberty,” continued Reagan, and “God was an ally in this great cause.”
They were willing to die to “protect and defend democracy” knowing “God would grant them mercy on this beachhead, or on the next.”
“Do not bow your heads,” Reagan said, repeating Colonel Wolverton’s plea to his parachute troops the night before the historic Invasion, “but look up so you can see God and ask His blessing in what we’re about to do.”
Now that America confronts an enemy every bit as daunting as that President Reagan faced, the question is, which Republican-and there can only be one-will look up and provide that continuum of morally clear, strong leadership today and in 2012?
Who, indeed, will speak from the heart?

Navel-gazing Republicans? Really?
Kudos, Mary.
A moving tribute to two great Americans. Thank you – now, if only the GOP could emulate or channel some of The Duke's and the The Gipper's patriotism and conservatism.
for some middle aged Republicans (like myself), our navels are getting easier to gaze at.
ok, time to start running again now that summer's here.
next to the Gipper, and Maggie Thatcher, Pope John Paul II was absolutely instrumental in bringing down Communism; his behind the scenes work, including Lech Walesa was key in fomenting the internal dissent that was needed to topple the Politburo..
Not that in his own way, Marion Michael Morrison from Waterloo, Iowa didn't have some input as well. Hundreds of millions, maybe billions- saw his portrayal of the Rugged Individualist and said 'what a country!'
So now you know why Ben Affleck and his boy pal Matt Damon just don't cut it…

Yes we are all enjoying Raygun-omics now, aren't we? Globalization sure is a great thing now, isn't it?
Go re-negotiate the terms of your mortgage — sorry it's in JAPAN! The destruction of financial markets AROUND THE WORLD is Ronnie Raygun's legacy! Very sorry to tell you, Obama cannot un-do 30 years of perfect storm financial manipulaton by the GOP in his first 150 days in office!
The Crapper destroyed all of the five Basic Institutions in his glorious career of B-Movie presidency as well:
> Only Republicans can be Christian, as long as exploiting faith gets votes. > Schools are a mess. Kids are not getting any smarter, safer or HAPPIER. Testing is skewed. >Financial ?? Read the headlines. Read Lee iacocca's book on the demise of Chrysler, blaming the GOP. > Political – Why are politicians mentioned on Big Hollywood – because this site is not about Hollywood, idiot! > Social – rReagan's sneaky Media conglomerates removed news REPORTING ….news is now just REPEATING (and endless Commentaries from Mary Claire Kendall, a babysitter.
Right. Barnie Frank and Chris Dodd should be thrown out of the republican party for what they did to housing and banking. In that 30 years not one time did the democrats have power.
Good Article Ms.Mary. John Wayne and Ronald Reagan had more Masculine Americanism in their Breath than 3/4 of these questionable self-involved Fops in films and Theater to-day .There's No Business Like Show Business…I guess so I just witnessed The Tony's…..Hello!
really…i don't get that either…there must be some better description…i am 51 and i don't gaze at ANY navels!!
"Both “Duke” and “Ronnie” shared a clear moral vision concerning America’s greatness-only using force to liberate not conquer"
Stateside.
all i have to say to you is you MUST be an idiot…you live in some kind of world that i don't…the ONLY reason you say what you do is so you can ALWAYS blame someone other than the bozo who is making this country into a laughing stock worldwide and trying to make all of us what a bunch of lowlife teetsucking dumasses want…to sit around doing nothing but making more kids and take handouts for which others worked…
you need to move to korea or iran…
That made sense. Not. Reagan left office in 1989, idiot. And I bet you enjoyed the two decades of growth and low unemployment we owe to him. Oh, I forgot … you were born yesterday. Education and the media are not controlled by conservatives. Neither are financial markets. Maybe you should read more than just the headlines.
> Education – Liberal education and indoctrination processes removed critical REASONING…education is now just REPEATING (and endless Commentaries from liberal trolls, who need babysitters.
it must kill you inside that Reagan remains as popular today as he was then,. just rankles you no end, to have so many think you are, just .. wrong.
ROFL – hilarious! No need to heavy-bash ignorant liberal trolls, a simple tweak is enough. Their eyeballs begin to bulge and they hyperventilate if forced to face pesky facts, like GW Bush isn't the spawn of Satan after all and the Democrats actually have a tiny voice in Congress. Wouldn't it be great if the Democrats ever had a president in office? Wow, imagine how cool that would be. Then the worst American financial mess in decades that we're plunging through today could be fixed… oh, wait… oops, never mind.
Wonder which era those sheeple liberals consider to be our nation's most prosperous ones? They have disqualified all eras of recent Republican presidents… maybe Jimmy Carter is their hero? Damn, unless unemployment is high and GNP is low, those liberals are not happy at all, are they? Misery enjoys company. Well, they must be nearly quivering with ecstasy now – Obama's numbers are dropping like a stone and will definitely drop a whole lot more. Hallelujah – Obama is ruining the economy!!!!!
See Gordo, liberals determined that people weren't buying the whole "It's George Bush's fault!" thing anymore so they decided to switch tactics and go after Reagan. They did this because frankly most of their most rabid followers are too young to remember much about Reagan so they can tell them what to think on the subject more easily that way. I actually have read posts waxing poetical about the policies of Carter of all people. It's a strange and surreal world we're living in.
It's pretty pathetic. Even more pathetic is how many times over the past week or two I've seen "Ronnie Raygun" or some variation on that theme, it wasn't all that funny the first time someone said, it let alone almost 30 years later. What's next, Flock of Seagulls hairdos and signing off their posts with "Gag me with a spoon?" Calling Sarah Palin "Grody?" Hell maybe they'll invite Wang Chung to the White House to play for one of the cocktail parties next. Nah that would actually be kind of cool.
I grew up with John Wayne, setting the path to what it was to be patriotic, something I still believe he was right about. The movie he did that the left should watch is the Horse Soldiers,. and better still, The Unfogiven.
The premise, was even after the bloodiest chapter of our history, when brother went against brother, father against son,. after all that,. in the end, we're all Americans, and need each other to succeed. We are joined by much more than what separates us.
Why when having won the election, having virtualy all the power, are the American left, so bitter, so hateful, so partisan, so divisive and so ugly in manner and speech to one half the country?
Don't bother with the usual,..but but but,. I read somewhere that Rush said,……. On his worst day, he has never been as fullbore evil to other Americans as the left is on a daily basis,.
my question is,
why?
Blah blah blah Yak yak yak…………..We get it Obama is the next best thing since sliced bread……..
And for Christ's Sake would someone point this idiot in the direction of some typing classes……..
The guy hasn't been President for 21 years. You're blaming him for the current financial crisis?
Were you there back in 1929 watching Franklin Roosevelt on TV explain the Banking Collapse with Joe Biden? What did Joes say….a guy has to know what he is talking about.
The Gip and the Duke lived in a different world. Even in their prime, I don't think they could find work in today's Hollywierd. They just wouldn't have fit in. Today there are very few movies extolling the America they supported and with which they were familiar.
This ("GOP is dead too") is the Perfect Storm resulting when a high school education, a union job, and regurgitated Olbermann converge.
"Republicans exploit faith"–tell that to the Reverends Sharpton, Jackson, and Wright, not to mention the Dear Leader, who stopped attending Church after election day.
Schools are a mess due to Reagan"–nope, the AFT and NEA's refusal to make teachers accountable for what they do has nothing to do with that.
"Reagan (twenty years out of office) ruined today's economy"–the prosperity of the '90s was due in part to Bill Clinton adapting Reaganomics in practice (welfare reform), though not in rhetoric.
I have no idea what the "politics/Big Hollywood" comment even means.
Best of all, the media tilts RIGHT???? What color is the sky in "GOP is dead's" world?
You absolutely gotta love Duke. Was he the greatest actor who ever lived? Of course not. He basically played himself every role. What he did do was make good movies and be the prototypical movie STAR. Although he was not nearly as prolific, Kevin Costner kind of reminds me of the Duke in that regard for today's movies. Not a great actor, but he made a lot of really good movies; good American movies, and you had to just like his characters.
Wang Chung! I had mercifully forgotten.
They are a herd. Young imbeciles who all of them regurgitate what they read on the same blogs: what to think and whom to hate. Last year there suddenly appeared lots of trolls who claimed that McCain was unfit to be president because as a pilot he had been in five crashes. That doesn´t make any sense unless they are all drinking from the same fetid well.
Delicious irony: complaining about the education system when he can´t spell. Must be the fault of those damn conservative teachers!
Obama: "Nobody messes with Joe"
And they all had a good laugh.
OMG, both Reagan and the Duke would roll over in their graves if they could see what is happening in their beloved nation. How sad! We have to replace every corrupt career politician in Washington, on BOTH sides of the aisle and start over……………………with term limits. The longer they stay in the cesspool that is DC, the more corrupt they become. 2010 will be the turning point. Either we step up and take back our country, or we will be doomed to Marxism/Socialism and Big Brother!
This post is for "GOP is dead too"….
I'm paraphrasing a woman's question and an answer from Jack Nicholson in the movie, "As Good As It Gets" –
Woman: "How do you play a Democrat so well?"
Nicholson: "I think of a Republican. Then I take away reason and accountability."
John Wayne….
(sigh)
Such a shame he isn't around to put some people in their place.
The "Duke" was popular for one simple reason…..
He was an example of what was good about America….
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them."
He was what every red blooded American boy wanted to grow up and be.
Yes, there has to be a person with a clear vision. BUT at the same time, by waiting for the hero on a white horse to save us, we reveal a great weakness that the enemies of liberty are exploiting. While we wait, they are building VAST shadow organizations that are infiltrating every part of society and government. Once upon a time this was the realm of conspiracy nuts, but not anymore. It is real. Ever wonder where The One got 750 MILLION to buy the election? Ever wonder how crazy laws and regulations just appear from nowhere without bing voted on? Open Society, Tides Foundation, Center for American Progress, Shadow Government, Moveon. These aren't made up fantasies, they're real groups who really hate having that pesky constitution standing in their way. Go to DISCOVERTHENETWORKS.ORG. There are HUGE sums of money being poured into subverting the constitution. To use your movie metaphor, this isn't The Longest Day. Its Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Even a legend like the Duke would be helpless unless we're prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and speak the truth about what is happening.
Wow, more liberal bitterness. Why are you people so mad – you won everything? I love the name calling too – real class. Ronnie Raygun – how original.
Silverado is one of my favorites. Kevin Coster wore that silly looking hat.
If you want to insult the last great President of the United States, that's okay. That's free speech, your right (at least until the current administration suspends it). The Bushes were fair, Clinton was cover-to-cover CYA, and don't even get me started about BHO. In less than 6 months they've nationalized the banks and half the car industry. They're giving business to their best supporters, the unions (which caused the GM demise in the first place). The proposed immigration reform, health care reform, and environmental ("cap and trade") will wipe out small business, and then all that will be left is government and your favorite coffee shop (after they get THEIR bailout).
But get your economics straight. Carter #1 was so bad at economics that economists had to create a new term: "stagflation", a mess that Reagan cleaned up. Carter also instituted the "Community Reinvestment Act", the REAL cause of the financial crisis we're in. CRA was expanded under Clinton (Fannie and Freddie) and forced on banks by groups like ACORN or pushed by bank execs like Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson (Dems who also worked for Fannie/Freddie AND served in Obama's campaign). Hmm … see a pattern here??
That's right: a liberal re-distributionist housing scheme wrecked the world economy, and Reagan, Wayne, Lincoln, Washington, and all the other great American patriots are turning over in their graves. Carter #1, Clinton, Dodd, Frank, Schumer, their Socialist lackeys, and now Carter #2 (BHO) are the culprits. Keynesian spending is not going to correct the market, but it's a great way to help your buddies stay in power. Hopefully BHO is only Carter #2 (more stagflation and gas shortages) and not Roosevelt #3 (new, new, new deal), which left us with the 1930's. Additional "stimulus", bailouts, and these disastrous planned bills could set us back for a decade.
Get your head out of the liberal blogs and read some real facts. Thanks.
Great post! If only their moral leadership were commonplace today instead of just a nostalgic memory. If only character, honesty, and integrity were valued instead of special interests, political prowess, and the ability to pull the wool over the eyes of America's sheep.
Maybe one day (hopefully in 2012) such a leader will step up, relieve us of Carter #2, and once again lead America to greatness and class.
Current day conservatives are intimidated by the very greatness of their idol, Ronald Reagan. Who can measure-up to Reagan? Answer: No one. Who can better articulate the conservative message than Reagan? Again: No one.
Who can inspire the hearts, minds and souls of everyday Americans to take pride in themselves, their family and their country better than Reagan? Well.. you know. The vexing question remains: who will be the next Reagan? Sadly, the answer is no one. At least not anytime soon.
Is there a Ronald Reagan web site out there that runs his speeches to inspire a new generation of conservatives (or even to re-inspire the older ones)? If not, there should be.
- Bill Williams
Because by & large they are just immature, narcissistic b!tches.
