A very wise man once told me, "There is no such thing as bad music, only music you don't like."

I think it's a fairly ridiculous thing to say that any music is a rip off of a forgone band or singer because all music is an amalgamation of past influences, interpreted their own way and served up to the current generation. To dismiss an entire 'movement' in favour of older bands is either narrow minded or petty and akin to your parent saying the immortal line "Music was better in my day!"

Power pop in probably an easy target due to it wearing it's influences proudly on it's sleeve but I'm fairly sure the bands that have been cited as influences would be rightly proud that they managed to influence the younger generation.

Of the above - I liked fun. Paul Steel and Lamar Holley the best but the others have some appeal as well. If you like power pop then I'd also suggest listening to: Silver Sun - Silver Sun, Brendon Benson - Alternative To Love, Secret Powers - Explorers Of A Polar Eclipse, Jason Falkner - Presents Author Unknown and (for me) the best of all: Jellyfish - Spilt Milk

Enjoy the music, smile at the influences or just snub it out of hand, listen to you old 'better' albums in defiance and admit to yourself you've stopped growing as a person, find nothing interesting anymore and are ready for death. I'm happy with the former.

PS. Thanks to jonnyrancher for suggesting Cheap Trick, nice album :)

Might have put Grand Atlantic from Australia on that list...their new album is pretty damn fine. Otherwise, agreat lsit and no issues with The Shazam at #1...

Mike love your list but seriously missing the best of the year, Minster Hill's "Capturing Clouds in a Bottle" and the great new Orange Peels "2020"

A Power Pop list without the new Cheap Trick album is not a valid list. The Wildhearts are criminally unknown in the States.

Thanks, Mr. Baron. Good stuff. I like the suggested songs by the Fun (catchy name; pure talent) and the High Dials (again, cool name; calm tunes). I agree that Cheap Trick's "Latest" is worth a listen.

Agreed. Can't stand the lyrical quality (or lack thereof) in most music that is released these days.

Cheap Trick's 'The Latest' is the best power-pop album of 2009. Any list, of best power-pop albums of 2009, that does not have CT on it, does not have much credibility. Most of the albums mentioned here are lame. Wildheart's Chutzpah and Weezer's Raditude are good too.

I have definitely let my subscription to College Music Journal slip! Power-pop greats like The Replacements, Material Issue and Marshall Crenshaw still present lofty goals for today's groups.
