‘Green Zone’ Brings to Cinematic Life All the Left’s Desperate Lies About Iraq
by Leigh ScottIn the comments to Big Hollywood’s recent post about the box office catastrophe that is “The Green Zone,” one frequent poster, and noted leftist, gave us a “teachable moment.”
In a nutshell, this poster said that the antithesis to “The Green Zone,” and diatribes of that ilk, would be some dim witted, cheer leading, Michael Bay style action movie where the Arabs are sneering villains and the American G.I.’s are square jawed pretty boys out to save the world.

Where does one begin?
His post reinforces the primary myth that drives all debate in our country. The central conceit is that leftist ideology is “complex,” “educated,” “nuanced” etc. Conservative and libertarian ideology is “simplistic,” “black and white,” and often times driven by superstitious religious beliefs and not “hard facts and science.” To suppose that the “conservative” version of “The Green Zone” is a movie like 1986’s “Delta Force” misses the point…big time.
As a quick side note, Menahem Golan’s “Delta Force” kicks ass. I recommend it highly.
What is silly about this narrative, especially in the discussion of “The Green Zone” is that it not only knocks conservative ideas, principals, and factual evidence down a few pegs, but it elevates leftist ideas far beyond their merit.
“The Green Zone” is based on a leftist fantasy. The film’s plot is rooted in a conspiracy theory that is no more factual or logical than 9/11 Trutherism. The fact that publications like the New York Times, major news networks, and supposedly respected leftist bloggers reinforce and repeat this fantasy does not make it true. The fact that leftist film critics have embraced this film as “speaking truth to power” is laughable and should discredit these individuals rather than give credence to the film’s plot and supposed revelations.
To embrace the ideas behind “The Green Zone” is to indulge in simplistic, blinded, poorly informed, and historically detached information. There is nothing “educated,” “nuanced” or “complex” about the idea that the United States government lied to the world to depose Saddam Hussein in an effort to steal Iraq’s natural resources. To believe that requires a lack of intellect and critical thinking, not an elevated amount of intelligence.
All conspiracy theories tend to fall apart when you analyze the facts and examine the motivations. Toss in the fact that it is difficult to keep even a few people quiet about things, and the possibility of grand conspiracies becomes even more remote.
Most “factual” accounts of the theory behind “The Green Zone” start their time lines after 9/11. Bush wanted to invade Iraq. It was a foregone conclusion they say. Regardless of the evidence, the administration wanted to invade Iraq and would do whatever they could to manipulate the facts to support their plans. Of course, this would mean that Bush had many accomplices, and that the plan began far before 9/11. In fact, the plan would have to begin before Bush even took office or was elected. Throughout the 1990s there are tons of interviews, articles, news reports, etc. that addressed Iraq’s WMD program. Rove, Cheney and Bush would have had to recruit a bunch of other politicians and world leaders to lay the ground work for their nefarious plot. People like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and John Kerry must have subscribed to the plot years before the invasion, for all of them believed that Saddam was packing heat and that he posed a threat to the world.
The WMD story predates Bush and is a global narrative, not one cooked up in Dick Cheney’s secret bunker.
Of course, Saddam himself could have put an end to the speculation by complying with the weapons inspections that were a provision of the peace agreement he entered into after the first Gulf War.
The biggest ally in the Bush/Rove/Cheney/Simon Barsinistar plot, it seems, was Saddam Hussein!
What about the motivations? Again, examining the facts reveals less about the dark hearts of the Bushies and more about the ignorance of the educated and enlightened left.

Letfists don’t understand money. This is a well documented fact and a fact that they seem to reinforce daily. Read any Paul Krugman op-ed and you will see what I mean. With that in mind, how much money would Bush and Co. make off the war? Who makes the money? And how much money would individuals make compared to the money that these individuals already have? Sure $500 million sounds like a lot to the average person, but is that worth the risk for a multi-billionaire? And these supposed oil, war, and reconstruction “profits” are all being paid to publicly held companies. Those profits are offset by costs, and then those dividends are divided amongst shareholders. So, a billion dollars paid to a company results in a few hundred million in “profit” that then is reduced to millions when it filters back to the executives and high level shareholders. Is that enough motivation to risk the consequences should one person start singing like a canary? Besides, no one who subscribes to this mythology has ever provided a distinct money trail, choosing instead to offer nebulous anecdotes about oil companies, Haliburton, and other generic Texas residents who’s net worth is over a million bucks.
Indeed, if you understand money and government, you can devise numerous other, better schemes to make a ton of cash. After 9/11, Bush could have used oil resources as a signature issue. Bankrupt the terrorists and their Middle Eastern enablers. The Republican controlled Congress could have acted in the same underhanded manner as the current Congress to force drastic changes in environmental and oil policy. Bush could have forced drilling in Alaska, coastal California and other places, awarding no bid contracts to both construction and oil companies to develop the new sites. Couple that with some protectionist trade rules through executive orders that barred oil imports form specific countries or groups (like Opec) and within five to ten years the “Rethuglicans” and their evil cronies could have remade the world oil market and had more money than they could ever hope to siphon from Iraq.
This oft repeated conspiracy simply doesn’t add up. I can find more circumstantial evidence and better motivations behind the theory that Elvis is alive and living in Ohio than I can the drivel that masquerades as the plot for “The Green Zone.”
Those who believe these stories are not “smarter” or more “complex” than the rubes, like myself, who understand history and economics. Quite the opposite. Like Obama’s speeches, these narratives are juvenile, emotional, and partisan rants wrapped in big words and condescending tones. You can add as much faux sincerity and shaky cam as you want; it doesn’t change the fact that at it’s core “The Green Zone” is a sophomoric, under thought, and ignorant story.
As for the conservative Iraq movie, I would focus on individuals. Complex narratives start with the journey of a character, not convoluted plots. I personally know three Iraq war veterans and their stories of heroism, danger, tragedy and triumph could fill ten screenplays.
And not a single one of them would be about America as a villain. That’s just stupid.

Leigh – this is just a prime example of why there are so very few movies I bother to see, particularly if the military is being portrayed.
Leigh—-I am mailing this money quote to everyone: After 9/11, Bush could have used oil resources as a signature issue.
PERFECTLY STATED, but like Conservative views, "too simplistic" for the lefties to understand…..
Anyone can google "vertical perturbation strategy" and download powerpoint files the DoD developed for lectures to the public that provided detailed information why Iraq was invaded after Saddam broke 17 UN resolutions.
Look on the bright side: These clowns are providing cinema historians and serious historians decades from now a huge amount of fodder for theses with titles like:
"How the Film Industry Self-Destructed."
"The Liberal Actor as Unintentional Comedy."
"The Propaganda Geniuses: From Lili Reifenstahl to Damon, Clooney, and Obama."
"Why Hollywood Bit the Hand that Fed It."
"The Decline of American Industry – From the Rust Belt to the Disintegrated Celluloid Belt."
"Liberal Pathologies – Failure to Understand Basic Political Principles."
There is insufficient room here for all the possibilities.
Leigh, your post is important- a necessary counter to the misinformation and lies of the left.
This work of de-hypnotising citizens fooled by Hollywood propagandists is never done.
Appreciate your review.
So Saddam was in on it the whole time. I thought that guy I saw driving the lowered Escalade with gold-plated spinners looked familiar. Very clever how they "leaked" those photos of his fake execution.
In RE to Kit's money quote, Leigh, I think if we could have done this, the left's response would have been that we were alienating our arab allies and deliberately stirring up global conflict in an irresponsible, selfish attitude (or something along those lines). LOL, at any rate, there was no right course of action for President Bush to take in the eyes of the Left.
Good piece!
I know I've posted this link before but a good conservative counterpart to The Green Zone would be a movie based on this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Thieves-Baghdad-Matthew-Bog...
Fact: now WMD's were found in Iraq.
So how is the central conceit of Green Zone a lie?
"The Propaganda Geniuses: From Lili Reifenstahl to Damon, Clooney, and Obama."
Hey, don't forget Al Gore…he of all people deserves a special mention in this category!
Great read Leigh!
As others have said I love your quote, “The Republican controlled Congress could have acted in the same underhanded manner as the current Congress to force drastic changes in environmental and oil policy…”
We need to remember this starting 11/10, drill for oil everywhere, eliminate the EPA, DOE, the list is long, etc.
The derived benefit of all these anti-war movies is that only liberals are going to them and since Obama will have to keep boots on the ground in Afghanistan for his whole term (and ideally in Iraq), Hollywood is just reinforcing to these liberals how evil war is. Sooner or later, the anti-war automatons will turn on The One because he is still using the evil war machine to exploit all of these innocent countries. Bonus!
Does Howlingwood really not realize that it's domestic bank ain't made on the coasts? Flip the bird to flyover country (where military enlistees come from) if you want, but please don't get all pissy when we ingnore you.
Scott – looks like a great book, although it would never get green lighted in today's Hollywood, I'd wager.
You got it exactly right Mr. Scott. Movies like Green Zone are pure leftist fantasy. I don't even know if Matt Damon actually believes all that crap, but like his idol Zinn, he must feel that pushing this "alternate" history is his duty or something. It's a joke.
I don't know what they're trying to accomplish with this cinematic excrement, but it ain't workin'……
The Republicans did not control congress in 2001 or 2002. Jumping Jim Jeffords saw to that. In fact Bush only had majorites for four years and then just barely.
I'd tell you what I think of it, but a lot of my posts are being deleted. Matt, eat fecal matter and expire.
I have read that we(the US) have killed around 1 million since the Iraq invasion(that was based on lies),even if we dismiss those numbers as being derived from leftwing,anti-war nuts,we have to assume that it is in the hundreds of thousands.
How in gods name can any of you gung ho types not see that we are viewed as the terrorists now?
We aren't playing some video game,we have probably murdered enough to fill 10 Vietnam wall memorials just in Iraq!.
This is one former Marine that sees thru the horse manure and fake patriotism that's used to justify this madness.
Great Post. Tx.
I think the most recent antithesis to the bumper sticker that is Green Zone was the T.V. program The Unit.
Sadly CBS canceled this smartly written show. In my opinion, when it dealt with the middle east, it painted a more realistic picture of the imperfect people that defend this country and the dirty, morally compromised decisions that have to be made in this struggle.
It's especially gratifying that this monster box-office disaster is subtracting a huge chunk of change from Universal, sister org of N-frickin'-BC and subsidiary (for the moment) of Jeff Immelt's crony-capitalist GE.
Hi all,
I've just recently discovered Big Hollywood and I love this site.
I would like one member of the Devout Bush Lied People Died Church to explain why the evil Darth Bush didn't complete the lie by planting WMD's in Iraq? If only the Bush evil genius brain hadn't failed before the lie could become a fait acompli. Since Bush lied to get us into Iraq, why didn't he lie and plant WMD all over the place so that our GI's could have found it and justified Bush's Iraq War? Just imagine, Bush plants the WMD, the world is shocked that Saddam was a genocidal maniac and hail Bush as the conquering hero saving the world from the Silent Rain pouring down on their cities.
I would watch The Devil's Brigade ten times before I would ever dumb myself down and view the Pacific or Green Zone.
Hey MATTY, if I see it I WILL PIRATE the VIDEO FOR FREE…… A leftist farce that just loves to BASH our great country… go get lifts in your shoes…..
Liberals lie, soldiers die, fanatics multiply.
This film, will be seen, across the Middle East. It will recruit more terrorists than Guatanomo Bay.
Actually, you can't. Mind giving us a link?
I find this whole thing to be a good laugh, what goes around comes around. They spit on soldiers and America in general and then they get mad that we don't go see there movies!, Well what goes around comes around. I bet if they did a Movie about the heroic life of Sgt Smith of the third ID, they would do gang busters at the box office, but they will not. Nor would they do one about the Horse Soldiers of Oct -Nov 2001 where three SF teams and some locals on horses took back a country. Nope, not in my life time, I am closer to 60 than 50 now. I don't go to the movies like I did, thou I did make and effort to See the Stoning, The hurt locker, The Wizard of Oz, and two of the three Sandra Bullock movies this year. It sad, there was a time not long ago, when I would go to the movies at least once a week some time twice or three times if there was something good. At some point the people who fund these movies will wise up that Guys like Damon is box office poison. After all, a 100 million dollars is still a lot of money even thou the government is doing its best to devalue the dollar so bad its dam near worthless.
"As a quick side note, Menahem Golan’s “Delta Force” kicks ass. I recommend it highly."
Lee Marvin. Chuck Norris. Every time you watch "Delta Force" a terrorist dies.
I'm mailing that quote around, too. If Bush really wanted to use 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq & take her oil, then why didn't he? He could have said right after 9/11 that Iraq was responsible & we're going to war. If he was lying about WMDs, then he could have just as easily lied about Iraq being behind 9/11. No need for the 18 month interval & war in Afghanistan. Heck, if Bush really did want to start a "war for oil", it would have been a whole lot easier to invade Mexico & take her oil resources, which are greater than Iraq's.
Work in "Queer Theory" somehow & you got yourself tenure!
Excuse me, uh "Green"..what's the name of theis turkey? Oh, what – "Green Lies"? Oh, ya "Green Zone"…
Isn't it still dying a slow death at the box office?
By the way, where's all that oil we stole? Maybe in Dick Cheney's basement? Because I could use a free fillup.
Jed –
I swear I read a recent interview (from the last year or so) with Col. Bogdanos in which he stated: a.) that WB was making a movie based on the book, and b.) that he was pleased with how they were going to do it. Other than that, I know nothing.
And oddly enough, I only know the book exists because someone wrote about it on the old Libertas film blog (which was a precursor to Dirty Harry's Place a.k.a. Nolte's old site) five years ago. Back then, Gale Anne Hurd (producer of Aliens and T2) was planning to option the book.
Yeah, Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris together is a perfect storm of teh awesome. They could have done a remake of "My Dinner with Andre" and it'd still be awesome.
Did you hear that they had to take that Lee Marvin brand toilet paper off the market?
It was too rough, too tough and wouldn't take s#%& off anyone.
The fact the movie's tanking as Alice in Wonderland soars makes this post even better…. the people speak, whether Hollywierd listens or not!!
Joe S. Hollywood native here:
BULLSEYE!!!
Here in Hollywood, I've been known to turn cocktail parties into Liberal slaughterhouses- I dismantle the "No Blood For Oil" meme of the deranged Bush Haters by asking these brainwashed pidgeons to point me to the American Oil Companies (let alone Texas-based Companies) who are gaining from Iraq Oil contracts???
They can't point me to any BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ANY. It's the anti-Iraq War Chinese oil companies who have walked away with Iraq govt. contracts. Okay . .
-So then the Lib-bots run to the Halliburton excuse for the war- only Halliburton sold off KBR (its subsidiary in Iraq) way back in 2004 (2003?). Umm . . next lie?
-So then the Lib-bots run to the Blackwater excuse (we invaded Iraq, spent 100 Billion-plus dollars so Blackwater could add a few hundred million dollars to its annual profits. (You can see how far down in the weeds the Leftists are forced to go to keep their Bush hater fairy tale going)
Well said. Everything the smug leftists are so angry about is based on fantasy. There's no arguing with them because the foundation of their beliefs is so convoluted and heavily layered with illogical suppositions that you have to go back to grade 1 history to straighten it all out. The leftists in academia have so tangled the truth of history that they've damaged the brains of multiple generations of students and the impact will be felt for decades.
I suppose that's one way to interpret "antithesis" but until I expanded the post and read on I was assuming that the quoted comment had inadvertently identified the simplistic nature of the movie Green Zone by saying that the conservative version would be similarly simplistic.
I noticed that, just like Spicoli, MHAAAATTT DAAAYMONNNN doesn't take questions or want to discuss his waco political beliefs with members of the press. This says volumes about how confident he is in them. I love thefact that this turd of a movie is loosing money big time. Serves them all right and I hope MHAAATTT DAAAAYMONNNN is getting a percentage instead of a salary.
This hack can't hold a candle to the likes of John Wayne. The Duke would kick his whiny Leftist ass all the while berating his anti-American crap. Where are the real Patriots in Hollywood?
You know… I wish more actors would refuse to discuss their political beliefs.
The Green Zone may suck rocks, but some stuff that Damon has done is fun and he tends to do the genre of movies that I like best. The fact that he has opened his mouth and said so many stupid things makes it hard to watch and enjoy the movies that he makes that don't suck rocks.
Maybe he finally figured it out… he's making action adventures, hero movies, and pissing off your audience is dumb, no matter what your politics are. Still, too little too late I think. Hard to take back all the previous stupid things he's said.
hahahahha!!!! To compare Norris to Damon is beyond laughable. Not only is Chuck Norris a man's man, and 100 times a better person and American than Damon could ever fathom being, but he's an actual action hero, and a believable one at that. Damon's action attempts look more like Will Hunting with a stick up his ass while having an allergic reaction.
I'm fairly new myself. It's an excellent site. This and Drudge help get me through the days, LOL!!!
Great point. I forgot all about that
Am I the only one that finds Damon more believable as a retard Angel in 'Dogma' than a U.S. loving badass solider?
"The Unit" is now aired on Sleuth, channel 308 (I think) for those of us with Direct TV. Kinda suprising, as Sleuth is an NBC affiliate.
I will not spend money see a movie with Matt Damon in it . Green Zone propaganda will cost the lives of American Military personal and others.
Excellent article. I've done a good amount of reading about the accusation "Bush lied, people died" and I've read many comments and posts on blogs regarding it. And I've never had anyone be able to counter the fact that, as Leigh pointed out, for Bush to have planned this, the planning would have had to begin in the 90s and involve quite a few people, including Clinton.
It's all bovine feces. I'm glad this movie tanked. It reminds me that the only reason why Avatar did so well was the Special F/X, which is also why it didn't get the ultimate prize – Oscar for Best Picture.
I would LOVE to see an Iraq War movie done by a conservative. We need that. I need that.
Personally I think he was more afraid of the Kurds and Shiites in Iraq. He used the WMDs once to put down a rebellion (thoroughly promoted by Bush the elder, who promptly turned his back on the slaughter).
If they knew he'd passed them off to some one else, what would have stopped them from rising up again?
I found the site through instapundit, which I try to read daily. I also like American Thinker and Hugh Hewitt.
There are certain actors I won't pay to see out of principle. These are the actors that use their position and wealth to try and influence American policy and have views that I strongly disagree with. I do believe that the vitriol of the Hollywood left during the Bush years hindered our efforts in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I also find it interesting that these same people are no longer fired up about stopping these wars now that one of theirs is in the White House. I pray for our military men and women and for victory in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Hmm, what happened to the price of oil when the war started? As I recall, it skyrocketed, and it's never come down to its pre-war levels. Lot of people making alot of money off that.
Have you ever met either of them? No, of course not.
MATT DAMON!!
I've never met any of my elected leaders or representatives either, yet I still support, or oppose, them. Your point?
Welcome to scarcity. When sabers rattle in the Gulf, Oil goes up. Sad but unavoidable, and most of that comes from the Iranians threatening to sink everything in the Straits of Homuz.
And that is STILl a far cry from outright stolen oil, which is what was alleged.
How about 'The Late Great California State.'?
I've said it before and I will say it again.
It's not about making a hit movie, or money making movie. It's about making a revisionist movie and having it taken as "what really happened".
To underscore my point I would just like to add:
MATT DAMON!!!
Thank you.
As usual Leigh, you're right on target.
I'm so tired of hearing the buzz that "Green Zone" flopped because of "war movie fatigue." It is typical of the Progressive Manichean mindset that the only conservative movie they can envisage is a rah-rah shoot-em-up.
There are thousands of compelling stories out there–simply giving any one of Michael Yon's posts from the field a cinematic treatment would be a masterpiece. Or how about the defense of the first democratic elections in Iraq?
Wouldn't it be interesting if the – conveniently unnamed – "noted leftist" Mr. Scott paraphrases had never been "noted" as a "leftist?" Especially if that someone had negatively reviewed "Green Zone" the day it came out?
I mean, I'D be interested, anyway…
One would think, but I'm not so sure. Of course the really hard core ones have already turned on Obama. But the vast majority of the left is still in the tank.
Because on the left, their actions aren't driven by their values, but rather their values are driven by their actions. In other words they aren't anti-war and anti-GOP because of their values, but rather because they attribute those actions to republicans and Bush. Once Bush and the GOP are side lined, they really don't have much of an opinion on war. Hence, no visible demonstrations.
True, but no new episodes, just re-runs.
If you like those web sites, check out this one two.
http://online.wsj.com/article/best_of_the_web_tod...
James Taranto is one of the editorial writers for the WSJ. He lives to find and comment humorously on MSM mistakes.
If Matt Damon says it, it must be true. He is such a cool guy and very smart. Did you forget Good Will Hunting. He is very smart. Why do you people attack him. Both Obama and Matt are very smart. I have heard many people on MSNBC and CNN tell me that so it must be true. My God he figured out those math equations at Harvard, even the ones the professors couldn't. Matt is very smart and very honest. You must believe me, because I said so.
America just plain sucks anymore!!!! Americans just stupid people.
I've never bought for one second that Gitmo recruited terrorists. The only recruits that ever generated were democratic voters.
I have tried posting links twice and they keep getting kicked off. I suggest you look up Thomas P. M. Barnett. He does a lot of work on this type of strategy. Sorry I could not get the links posted.
Okfalls check out FORGOTTEN HEROES http://www.forgotteheroesthemovie.com
Bad, check out the only film that honors the Vietnam vets FORGOTTEN HEROES http://www.forgottenheroesthemovie.com
I have always said, the man who can explain things for everyone to understand is often much smarter than the man who explains everything so that only he understands. It shows that this person knows what they are talking about and understands the material, while guy #2 is just blowing smoke.
Pretty vapid considering the driving force behind Bush's actions were money (and there is MUCH more money in war than in doing something productive) and Zionism. The whole thing was planned by PNAC which even called for a terrorist act to kick it all off.
Thanks for the link. Interesting article.
This quote from Steny Hoyer I find very offensive:
The Washington Times quotes Rep. Steny Hoyer, Pelosi's No. 2: " 'So what,' says [sic] the American people. What they're interested in is what resulted. 'What did you do for me and my family to make my life more secure and better and greater quality.' And that's what we're trying to do."
I do not look to the government for happiness or quality of life. It is not the job of Steny Hoyer to provide Americans with happy little lives. I also don't see how gov't health care makes me more secure.
I guess the dems may as well toss out that JFK quote that starts "Ask not what your country can do for you…" Looks like the new mantra is "Ask what your country can do for you."
You wouldn't now if they were profiting from oil or not. Explain how you would know. Secondly, you think somehow Bush would be looking out for "Americans" ANYTHING? Let's take a gander at his record, eh?
- Massive immigration flooding of the country (despite opposition from Amercans and DESPITE 9/11 where we were attacked by immigrants……supposedly – does that add up?)
- Banker bailouts – US tax dollars going to supporting foreign banks.
- Support of a foreign country that murdered Americans: Israel
- Support of a NORTH AMERICAN UNION
Bush doesn't consider himself an "American" and he laughs at people like you. He is an elite "citizen of the world" globalist loon.
"HIS" oil companies profited – whether they are "American" or not doesn't matter.
Obama explained things better than McCain therefore he was smarter. Well, maybe that is a bad example because just about anyone is smarter than McCain who is so rich (from marriage) and stupid that he doesn't know how many homes he owns. Take it as read that Obama would leave the impression that he has explained things to more people. What you are missing here is the AUDIENCE. If you have a dumbed down audience that doesn't make the guy smarter and if they hear what they want to hear (cue video of Black mammy saying "he gon' pay fo' my gas an' my house.")
So, I think there is a flaw in your theory. It lets charlatans off the hook. Granted that is more of an ethical thing but I don't think you were planning on a test that is made to be gamed be sociopaths.
Took me a few but…
The plot of "Saint?" All the heating oil was hidden under Moscow… somehow.
There are so many stories of heroism and bravery in wartime that you could base a hundred movies on them instead of fabricating something. I can't believe that some idiot is actually thinking of doing a movie on Valerie Plame. Who the fuck cares?
I think you got lost on your way to DailyKos. Go play in the shallow end of the pool. You're in way over head.
[...] ‘Green Zone’ Brings to Cinematic Life All the Left’s Desperate Lies About Iraq from Big Hollywood by Leigh Scott [...]
AH yes…when Bush41 was responsible Hollywood cared about Saddam's treatment of the Shias & the Kurds—remember 'Under Siege' & 'Three Kings'?
crickets chirping…..
I'd love to see a movie about Michael Yon, but he seems too humble to allow that. I'll bet he could suggest a few really good events/people to do a good movie about, though.
Michael Yon is a great American and I wish there were more war reporters like him.
I remember back at the start of the Iraq War, the only good news out of Iraq came from the internet. If I had only watched the MSM I would have missed the reports about Americans building schools and sending books and other items to Iraqi children. Reports of our military helping wounded Iraqis and even one report of a soldier who had saved the life of a dog.
The Hollywood left can't make positive movies about Iraq because it would show how misleading and wrong they have been about Iraq. They would have to admit that Murtha was wrong about the Haditha marines, that some WMD (not nukes) was found, that the surge worked and that Fallujah was an example of our military at their greatest.
I hope it costs a lot to make, because I think they will lose money big time on this one.
No way will I watch this film because I'm sure it will be a fantasy film about Valerie's Bourne like CIA adventures and the evil Bush administration that "outed" her.
I stand corrected!
tl:dr
Noted to me, MovieBob is different than "self-described" or "professed". True, you may not have proudly taken on the mantle of "leftist" commentator, but that doesn't alter the substance of your prolific contributions.
I also wanted to keep your identity separate from the post so I could focus on the substance of the issue and not on personalities. Making it personal is such a leftist technique. It degrades the substance of any argument.
Hey its teh Fonz…!
As for as the genius of the Obama…what Hawaiian earthquake…?
I'm sure many people would love to muddy the waters and call us "terrorists". Changing the definition of terrorist or droning on about "cycles of violence:" works really well to justify immoral activities. Why not talk about the cycle of violence between police and criminals? Because that is what you are essentially saying.
Not sure how someone is "gung ho" when they simply understand that military action, no matter how distasteful is somehow the only rational decision. You should spend your time and energy focusing on the dictators and tyrants who use mass murder, rape and theft to achieve their selfish aims instead of focusing your ire and the people who sacrifice to stop them.
Nope…
"The Public Response to Hollywood Politics, or, On Biting the Hand that Starves You"
This internet-thingy is pretty great, isn't it?
The best paragraph contains this sentence: "Bush could have used oil resources as a signature issue. Bankrupt the terrorists and their Middle Eastern enablers. The Republican controlled Congress could have acted in the same underhanded manner as the current Congress to force drastic changes in environmental and oil policy." And so on. This idea would make a great "alternative" history novel (ala "The Guns of the South," or "Fatherland"). That course of action would have spared us the TSA, Homeland Security, and Obama would never have been elected; in fact, he would have been content to stay in Illinois and had rap sessions with ACORN and Rev. Wright. But, Bush was no bag of goodies. He was a pragmatist who believes Islam is a "religion of peace."
The Dirty Dozen with Bronson, Marvin, Sovales(?)
John Cassavetes and Clint Walker come to mind…great one as well.
Gary Sinise comes to mind…but there are sadly few others.
I can hardly wait to see what perils lie in store for someone who moves paper around.
Nasty paper cuts are so yesterday…
"The Unit" rocked harder than the last 5 Oz-Fests combined.
Some male conservative actors like Adam Baldiwn, Tom Selleck, Jon Voight, etc. are too polite to kick some liberal butt unless confronted personally. Female conservative actresses such as Angie Harmon and Victoria Jackson, on the other hand, will kick liberal butt anytime, anywhere.
Didn't Hanks already do 'Charlie Wilson's War" and wasn't that a big enough lying turd? HBO plays that piece of crap about 4 to 6 times a month lately.
Fantastic article Leigh, the "Bush lied, people died" narrative on the absent WMDs is one that hasn't been brought up in awhile. On the press junkets Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are acting like this narrative is fact, and if you see it as anything else you're living in a fantasy world, and they hide behind the military personell they used in the movie to justify it.
I always love Leigh's posts and never miss them when they are on Big Hollywood. Thanks
Yep. Why the hell do we see a movie about how corrupt Congress is and then laugh it off and go about our daily routine?
At some point this ought to stop.
