Has Liberalism Jumped the Shark?
by Leigh ScottThe term “Jump the Shark” has been with us for a while. The clever metaphor is used for the moment when something of cultural significance begins to lose its luster, and descends into lameness. It is a reference to the T.V. show “Happy Days,” specifically the episode when Fonzie water skied over shark infested waters. This is the precise moment where the show began to decline.
Republicans and conservatives are dancing with glee every time a new poll comes out showing Obama’s poll numbers going down faster than a Hilton (Perez or Paris) after a nice dinner and a couple of cocktails. The support for things like Universal Health Care, closing Gitmo, and Cap and Trade are sinking even faster. Yet, that’s not the whole story. Something else is going on here. Something that begs the question: Has Liberalism “Jumped the Shark”?

Ehhhh…
Over the last sixty days or so, we’ve seen some amazing things. We saw a “wise Latina,” a self-described “affirmative action baby” claim that her statements were taken out of context or merely “meant to inspire,” and that race has nothing to do with her job performance. The White House has re-branded the $787 billion “stimulus package” a “stabilization package.” Our Vice-President, devious genius that he is, stated that we need to, “crazy as it sounds,” spend like lunatics to avoid bankruptcy. A gay blogger and gay civil rights champion called a black guy “the worst thing [he] could think of…a faggot.” We saw our government allow Iranian protesters, who peacefully challenged a rigged election, get shot in the street. Concurrently, we demanded that a tin-pot dictator be reinstated after his government got wise to his schemes and legally booted him.
All of these little vignettes, as well as countless others over the last month or two, do not bold well for our little leftist friends. They are examples of liberalism in action, naked and unfiltered. They are the equivalent of an “unforced error” in tennis. There is no opposition baiting these mistakes and revelations. This is in their own voices, not through the analysis of a Rush Limbaugh “teachable moment,” a Glenn Beck meltdown, or Hotair.com “quote of the day.”
It is liberalism unplugged, on display for all to see.
Identity politics, when viewed in its purest form, is racism. Keynesian economics, when distilled to its basic concepts, flies in the face of common sense. Re-branding political policy doesn’t change its ultimate effectiveness. Hypocrites are hypocrites regardless of the causes they support, or claim to champion. The U.S. should not be about “nuance” when it comes to foreign policy. We must always stand on the side of freedom and democracy.
For the first time in a long time even a casual observer can clearly see what modern liberalism is all about.
In an episode of “South Park” the boys encounter the Underwear Gnomes. They are a society of magical little creatures who steal your underwear in the middle of the night. When the boys ask the Gnomes about their motivation, they explain that they are doing it for “profit.” The first step is to steal underpants. The third step is profit. When pressed about the second step there is only silence. The Gnomes don’t know how to transform the stolen underwear into profit, but they continue to steal it anyway. They work tirelessly, stealing underpants in their quest for profit. But without that second step, they will get nothing. Hmmm, what does that sound like? Great goals, but no solid plan of getting there? That’s modern liberalism. It’s an ideology that lacks principles No step two. To make matters worse, most of the very mechanisms of liberalism (unions, racially segregated interest groups, attacks on capitalism) act counter intuitively to its goals.
I say its “jumped the shark” because, without a strong set of timeless principals to guide it, this political ideology is a fad. It’s had a lot of great, good looking, and popular spokespeople. Last November it had an awesome ad campaign (one so good, Pepsi apparently felt the need to steal it). It’s all style and no substance. And like the Spice Girls, Beany Babies, Cabbage Patch Kids, and the leisure suit it is destined to fade into obscurity.
Young people, you know those folks who haven’t lived as much as you but know better than you, have always been the bread and butter of hippie liberalism. But they have a very short attention span, especially the kids today. During the election, they were all about it. But now they are really into Adam Lambert and “Twilight”. Obama and Co. had hoped that the kids would stay in the mix, using the twitter and the Facebook to keep it real and spread their positive message of nationalization of private industry and wealth redistribution. Sadly, the kids have chucked Obama into the virtual trash bin, right next to the video of the Ally McBeal dancing baby.
Troll traffic on conservative sites is down. Look at Facebook, MySpace, YouTube etc. The number of political postings supporting hippie liberalism is almost non-existent. Even more remarkable, the message boards and postings on non-political sites is trending libertarian and conservative when political topics come up. Perhaps most humorous of all, the State Run Media has failed to make any recent conservative “scandals” or “revelations” stick. People just don’t care to hear it. They want results not more talk. Bush isn’t the president, Sarah Palin resigned, Rush Limbaugh isn’t backing down. Dare I say that people want to “move on”?
Make no mistake, they aren’t going to evaporate right away. Even “Happy Days” went on for 100 episodes after the infamous moment (and we got two seasons of “Joanie Loves Chachi”), but the end is nigh. At some point in the near future (probably in the lead up to the 2010 mid-terms) the pundit class is going to have to ask “can the Democratic Party relate to voters?” Can the party of Howard Dean, the Daily Kos and Keith Olbermann remain relevant?
With the kids bouncing onto the next big thing, and without any real successes to point to, the hippie liberals are left with their usual crew: trial lawyers, race hustlers, and unions. There are a few hard-core ideologues out there, but the true, honest liberals who are all about those lofty goals will soon abandon the freak show assembled in Washington.
With hippie liberalism “jumping the shark”, people are going to need a new fad. It has to be bold, fresh, and at least on paper, original. A new form of “pop politics” will emerge. The good news for everyone, is that the Republicans “jumped the shark” at some point in 2005. We are heading towards a whole new era in American politics.
Hopefully it will be more effective than this whole Pepsi, I mean Obama thing. I wonder what it may be….

Nice job summing up the current form of liberalism.
Does Obama want everyones underpants
/Hahahaha
Excellent posting!
I've noticed this too, leftist troll traffic is down wherever I go too. Now they are going to have a disaster and can't blame the conservatives, and many of the youngsters that were so gung ho on Obama are finding out exactly WHAT they voted for. This is a good life lesson for them, that they're not babies any more and that they do have to have a hand in their own lives and future. Independence is a wonderful thing, isn't it?
Obama and the Democratic Congress and Senate are leaving that jumped shark far behind by now, so it should be an interesting mid-term election. NOW I have hope.
I would would vote for Hillary right now
/
Indeed, liberalism can not stand scrutiny, and now they find themselves where they don’t like to be fully exposed. A true conservative party needs to emerge with true American ideals, of freedom, small govt./low taxes, love of family/country, …this is an opportunity if the dim-wits in Washington don’t screw it up to vanquish ‘60s radicalism once and for all. Yes I believe liberals have, “jumped the shark,” seize the moment.
I have said for years the left would die by the sword of identity politics, that sword had been unsheathed.
Ya' know, I've thought of that myself.
I was thrilled watching Hillary lose in the primaries, just because of my intense personal dislike for her and her so-called "husband". Be careful what you wish for…

does that mean hillary gets a thrid rate show after we cancel obama's?! her socially awkward side-kick is north korea.
Okay, I'll say it. Sarah Palin.
Yeah. And the reaction from our leftist friends in D.C., to the slow awakening of America, is to throw unconstitutional rules tantrums in the House, trying to enforce speech codes on the opposition. More brutal hypocrisy, as the cookie crumbles. Sigh.
NOTE TO DEMOCRATS…………..
Sometimes when you win…………you really lose………………..2010.
One thing that would help: the currently seated Republicans need to take the gloves off and start using the "S" word.
Yes, that's right. Socialisim. Let the Dems explain the difference between, say, "Universal Health Care" and "Socialized Medicine".
Let them explain why saying, "It's good for everyone to spread the wealth around", is not the same thing as, "From each according to his ability to each according to his need".
Let them explain why a 60% controlling interest in General Motors is not "government ownership or control of the revenue producing industry".
We have a socialist president. We have a socialist congress. Why be so polite about it? Who is it we're afraid of offending?
Right on. It seems that Obama in particular has "jumped the shark" I believe he doesn't realize that it was pretty much in the cards, so to speak, that he would be President and therefore misread America as a whole. Personally I think that this is the fault of the MSM, but nonetheless, IMO, Mr. Prez may one day realize that, *gasp*, he does have very different ideas, and most do not agree with said ideas, that aren't good for our country and the American people as a whole. That is if he isn't too full of himself, but I doubt it.
you are talking in circles to the dems…they will never understand this. "i win BUT i lose…how is that possible?!"
I hope Mr. Scott is right about the future and his points are faultless. However let's be clear about what we are dealing with here. The Dems have the White House and large majorities in both houses of Congress. They have powerful and devoted allies in the media, academia and the permanent government bureaucracy. They are also utterly ruthless and willing to put political gain over national interest every time. They invert Clausewitz's maxim and see "politics as war by other means." Right now the Left is floudering because they finally have to face the realities of the adult world. But when election time rolls around they will beat the same old drums about "fat cats" and "the selfish rich" and promise (and promise and promise) the voters everything for nothing. Conservatives have to have the fire in the belly for such a fight.
Don't misunderstand me: I like Sarah Palin. I wish she hadn't been thrown under the bus by our Great American War Hero and his campaign managers. I wish she hadn't been caricatured by the media so that the average American thinks she's an idiot.
In retrospect, I wish she'd had better personal judgment and said "No" to McCain and spent the time prepping herself for her own national campaign.
I wish I'd hit the Powerball…

It seems like this whole scenario was arranged in order to teach OBAMA a life lesson. Sure will be an expensive one.
And I don't think he is listening.
His racism showed this week, and he's getting an unexpected slap-down in the polls over it. But there are none so blind…..as those who are never wrong.
Liberalism HAS jumped the shark.
Dems are now reeling in sand shark Barbara Boxer after her two recent disastrous performances.
All true except that what you're speaking of isn't and never was "liberalism". Maybe we can even take back the true meaning of the word in a few years. I would hate to see "liberal" go the way of the swastika. A perfectly good thing co-opted by crazies, its meaning twisted and forever out of bounds.
Your post is right on- makes me think about that turncoat Lindsey Gramnesty again. Who was that wuss afraid of offending? Sotomayor? He has let us down before with that amnesty bill and several other things I could mention. No guts- period.
Sadly, I agree with most of your points. What I see in the day-to-day is selfishness, greed, laziness, ignorance, and a sense of entitlement. All around me. People who want something for nothing tend to skew democratic.
Working for a living, taking care of your own family and accepting the responsibility for your own choices and actions are quaint virtues.
We have a perfume salesman in the White House, and most of the people I know are still quite content with that.
Great article. In fact it inspired me to send Obama a weeks worth of my dirty underpants complete with exhaust burns. They couldn't be any more smelly than the crap the Democrats and Obama have been fouling the atmosphere since the election. Now, if I could just get that stimulus check and buy more…..
Here is something that is being missed.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti...
Boxer and Kerry are treating her comments as NEEDED to be refuted. If she is not that powerful or that uninteresting to the independents then B and K could ignore her.
Personally, I think the reason Obama wants his agenda on healthcare passed next week is Sarah will start to move about the country.

Now that that is out of the way, I'd like to see what some of our more thoughtful left wingers have to say.
Al dente anyone?
The one thing I can't agree with here is the claim that liberalism lacks a fixed ideology. It has ideology coming out the ears and is very simple: all people should have the same amount of "stuff" — whatever stuff happens to be the issue: money, power, health care, you name it. Liberals are levelers and they don't care how much misery they must inflict to bring it about. In fact, the last thing they care about is prosperity.
At bottom, liberalism is about serfdom: you must work to support the government. You get to keep only what the government lets you keep.
This is what people need to see. Otherwise, in a few years, the liberals will recover and make yet another comeback.
Too bad the rope didn't break and Fonzie slowly sank into a messy situation… But perhaps you're right. One of the portents may have been Barbara Boxer's inane act of bringing race into a Cap and Trade session. She was slapped upside the head by her own style of race card identity politics – and rightly so – but I still don't think she gets it. I hope the new wave will be more Libertarian than Republican, with a conservative movement that resists the urge to do what the left does – inject government into every stage of our lives. There have been too many Republicans who say they want to minimize government, but when elected, trip over themselves in enacting their pet restrictions.
Did any of us EVER THINK we would see the day when we could even consider Hillary as a viable option??
Maybe there really is Global Warming…….
I don't really understand that guy at all. Maybe he keeps his ear that close to the ground in terms of what his constituency thinks. I watched some of his speechifying (read: "questioning") during the Sotomayor hearing and he sounded pretty good. Made some good points. Then decides to vote for her?
As I recall, he did much the same during Clinton's impeachment.
Liberals can't jump my shark. I eat'em for lunch. I have been getting quite a few lately. But they taste bad and are less filling. I bet we will see the rise of ODS very soon and it won't be the conservatives suffering. The mental liberals are going to start a run on antidepression drugs. 2010 will be declared the Year of Therapy for 'progressives' after the midterm election.
A friend of mine says that most people he runs into don't have ANY political ideology at all, they just have that laziness, ignorance, and sense of entitlement you were talking about. They don't want to talk politics, they don't want to think deep thoughts. The American population, as it stands, is a Washington bureaucrat's wet dream.
Ahem: It's "bode well", not "bold well".
It's also telling that, the majority of people I talk with don't actually know what socialism is, they just think it's something vaguely "bad" and so, therefore, Obama couldn't be one of those. Because, they voted for him.
Ewwww…have you been chewing on someone's underwear?
OK, I just thought of about half-a-dozen different things to say in response to that, none of which are suitable for family viewing.
I guess "Jumping the Shark" is the liberal slogan and the right wing movement uses "KICK IN THE NADS" There has been a HUGE jump to the left for the entire country becuse of ONE ADMINISTRATION….. this country still has NO idea where we are headed and the MASSES WILL NOT READ ANYTHING THAT PUTS the MESSIAH down, the bad thing is MOST americans still read PRINT media nd that is where the crux of this issue lies… IMHO, the press has pushed this more then the MESSIAH himself,…. we have NEVER had a BAD article regarding this man in 6 months and I am sick and tired of it…. they give this man a HALL PASS on what he has done and what he is trying to do……Prime example, MOST PEOPLE STILL THINK THAT THE ECONOMY IS BUSH'S FAULT!!!! what type of idiots are they???
"I say its “jumped the shark” because, without a strong set of timeless principals to guide it, this political ideology is a fad."
Well, I don't think it is a fad – in fact the term "left" and "right" came from the time of the French Revolution when those of more conservative beliefs sat on the right side of the parliamentary hall while those of the more liberal….
Of course even the term "liberal" became perverted over here. A true liberal is libertarian.
There will always be left and right – they ebb and flow though. I do believe that this country will be in a real mess by 2012.
Does this critique of liberalism contain anything new?
"Liberals can't jump my shark. I eat'em for lunch."
yes but then you choke on the Liberals' waterskis and die. And then get eaten by the shark. too bad for you!
Yeah…there were some underwear jokes.
Most far left Liberals aren't smart enough to use waterski's. The few that do, can't keep them on their feet. I like to start at the head and eat downwards anyway. It's more fun to watch their brain explode, first.
Very good. I agree the events of the last couple of weeks don't, ah, bode well for the lefties. Good points, too, about the questionable strategy of relying on the attention-span-of-a-butterfly types as a base.
Even though modern "liberalism" is strikingly without solutions to its perceived problems, I think you're missing the point that Leftism has been nothing more than grievance-mongering since the days of Diderot (rich) and Voltaire (aussi.) The Great Unwashed have never been anything but cannon fodder for the battles of the privileged, which would otherwise be only vicious hair-pulling conducted in faculty lounges.
The current "We gotta fix it or we all gone die" crowd gained its everlasting mantra when Karl Marx (upper-middle-class child of privilege) penned the immortal Das Kapital (which may as well have been titled Eat the Rich – Kill Your Parents,) wherein he posited "In the Brave New World of Socialism, the Little People will take over the means of production, and then….and then….and, uh…..a miracle will occur! Or something."
The contemporary crop of imbeciles is the inevitable result of 40 years of public "education" in leftist platitudes at the expense of basics like reading, spelling and history. I agree that the ultimate solution for "liberalism" is exposure of its true nature, and the necessary ridicule that would hopefully ensue. What worries me is that there may not be enough of an audience left.
Nope. Some things just don't change because liberals are still full of the same old crap. That is what is bound to make the fad die out.
I agree that the candidate for 2012 hasn't emerged yet, but if Obama, Inc. continues on their current path, the speeches for the candidate are writing themselves. I think the momentum is building for a conservative canditate who would say any combinations of the following:
"The United States is the greatest country in the world, offering a model of freedom that citizens of other countries yearn for. The very best of our citizens have bled and died around the world in the cause of freedom throughout our history, and I will not apologize for the United States of America, and shame on anyone who does."
"The personal liberties of our citizens must be protected at all costs. Rights are not granted by the government, they should be protected by it. Health care is not a right, and the government should not be in the health care business. What I propose is tort reform that will bring down the ruinous costs of health care in this country."
"The era of politicians who come to Washington "to do good but end up staying to do well" should end. I propose term limits for Congress."
"You cannot spend your way to prosperity. We are in hard times, as we have been at other times in our nation's history, and together, we can work our way through them with common sense, limited government, and cost cutting."
I'd vote for someone like that.
Just have to post in order to compliment you on the "underwear gnome" anology, great stuff Leigh!
Don't underestimate the State Run Media's ability to regroup and repackage the message in order to trick the idiot class into (once again) supporting Democrats for the 2010-2012 elections.
Never let your guard down. We must keep running hard THROUGH he finish line!
Keep your eyes on Senator Jim Demint. And keep him in your prayers.
No, but that's all he's going to leave us with.
that is a whole differnt direction. I'm tired of using "Al Fresco" but my new one is forever ruined. Thanks lol
that is a whole different direction. I'm tired of using "Al Fresco" but my new one is forever ruined. Thanks lol
it's "bode well," "principles," and "it's" (9th paragraph). Friendly editing: they were clearly honest mistakes, but I get irritated when over-educated/under-intelligent liberals dismiss an entire position because grammatical mistakes somehow mean the writer doesn't know what he's talking about. Argumentum ad grammaticum, so to speak. Best defense is to not give them an opening.
Aren't you presuming that there ARE thoughtful left wingers?
Somehow or other, I got signed up for the Democrat newsletter. This one was about Senator Jim DeMint's campaign to kill the health care reform. Instead of calling for open debate on the issue, Jen O'Malley Dillon emailed asking for donations in order to stage an advertising campaign to smear DeMint. That's the majority party for you–you know, the one that promised an end to "politics as usual" and "partisan bickering".
The fatal flaw of liberalism is summed up by the parable comparing a house built on rock versus a house built on sand.
Liberalism is built on a foundation of lies, which will never stand the storm of Truth.

Part of Obama's problem is that he still thinks he's on the campaign trail.
Someone should tap him on the shoulder and tell him that the election is over…..
The thoughtful libs are rapidly shutting up, and the hateful ones are either shutting themselves off entirely because they know they can't defend what's going on or they've jumped ship. And the irrational few continue to spew bile, but there are always those few.
I think the smart ones are getting mighty tired of "We Told You So" everytime something happens that we swore would happen and they swore wouldn't.
Hey…I'm a cook. That's the only context I have for "al Dente".
I wish I could be as optimistic as the author, however, liberals rarely if ever are capable of seeing their true selves or the long term results and unintended consequences of their actions/causes, etc. As far as liberal troll traffic being down, this is because as far as they are concerned right how, they hold the ball. Liberals are not defenders of anything, they are attackers. Their guard is down. Once conservatives come back into power the trolls will reappear.
You can't be surprised, they are using the Alinsky method after all….
Senator Bumpkin, er, Graham, does nothing other than what McCain tells him to do. He represents the worst of politicians – someone in it for his own benefit without conscience or concern for the good of the country or of his constituents.
He has lauded himself for his "principled compromise", and I don't think he's even smart enough to understand the contradiction in itself.
He is a discrace to his country and to his state.
Neither one of you could possibly be serious about Hillary. Same wolf, different sheep costume.
Gosh I hope liberals have jumped the shark. I made the mistake of wandering over to a liberal blog last night, and after reading a few posts, I was literally sick to my stomach. To see these social, moral and idiotic ingrates basically urinate on everything that is good, and right and true is nauseating. It's like a poison that creeps into your entire being. I'm ratcheting up my efforts to defeat them any lawful way that I can. I've never felt the need to be more politically active in my entire life.
Except the Franking Commission won't let them use the words "government run healthcare" to refer to the reform plan.

As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, and later the advisory committee to the Senate, he voted for impeachment of Clinton, and that is one of the reasons people supported him when he ran for Senator.
But as power corrupts, he has become wholly corrupted once he gained power as McCain's deputy in the Senate.
At least in the upstate of South Carolina, there are a lot of people outraged with him. He didn't even win Greenville County in the 2008 election, but sadly, won the rest of the state.
Had the election been McCain v. Hillary, I would have voted for Barr. But the Big O was just too much of a threat to spend my vote that way. But between Hillary and McCain, I saw very little difference.

Well, campaigning for higher office is the only "job" Obama has ever had. Aside from his "community organizing".
It's really about all he's qualified to do. He looks more and more like a clueless dilletante, selling a "plan" that has to be written by somebody else.
Thanks to President Obama, most of the Democratic Party has jumped the shark. Their policies and broken promises are on full display and it's not pretty.
Salma Hayek is ignoring you too, huh?
"Left" and "right" are European political constructs that are or should be innappropriate to American policitcal discourse. Left is more collectivist/socialistic/communist and Right is more fascistic/dictatorial in Euro-speak. In the US, it's better to use Conservative and Statist or Liberal/Classical Liberal and Statist. In the European spectrum, either end winds up with total government control. In the American spectrum, you should be moving between anarchy and total government control.
I never read the liberal blogs, unless you count ABC News online.
The funny thing is that no one's actually writing a plan. It's like they're just waiting for something to happen that will magically fix everything.
It's going to be really interesting once the love-fest with this administration is over and Obama has to answer for his mess….
in our glee at Mr. Obama's downfall- let's not forget that it was conservatives that gave us Bill Clinton's second term. 1-1/2 years into his term, you couldn't find anyone who voted for the guy; then in '94 conservative Republicans were elected in a landslide, went about fixing things…Clinton got most of the credit…we got Clinton, term 2.
Very close – liberalism is about servitude to the state. If you can get more by influencing those in power to give more to you after taking more from someone else, well, then that's okay.
Otherwise, well stated!
Hey everybody, this sums up everything!!
http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/010944.h...
But, they've retreated into their echo chambers for the most part. They aren't as busy out posturing about how defeated and broken we are like they used to. Heck, I haven't even been taunted by my thoughtful lib friends about "The party of 'No'" talking point they used after Specter went to join his ideological buddies.
I hear that. After some of the things I read last night, I feel like I need to warn him about his own personal safety as well.
Sadly, this is true for me as well. It hurts me every time I think this thought, but I can't help but think there needs to be an intellectual qualification to vote. I know the problems with this, who gets to ask the questions and all? But it just annoys me to no end that the majority of people that voted in the last election were hopelessly naive and did not know the basics about anything economic, political, or otherwise.
It should not be a popularity contest, and this last election was just that. It boiled down to a choice between the "Cool, hip black guy" and the "Rich, stuffy, old white man". That is what the election boiled down to for the vast majority of voters. And now we reap the consequences.
Exhaust burns? LOL! Never heard that. I'll have to remember that when I try to SHOUT those out of the family laundry!
I think that is something that the Republicans have to realize–they can't just keep saying "It's socialism" and expect that the majority of Americans are going to be appalled. Most of them have absolutely no idea what that means. We have to draw the picture for people, and the Republicans have been doing a singularly lousy job of doing that.
I don't think that the author is saying that liberals will come to their senses. Rather, I think he's saying that all the people the liberals fooled into voting for them by misrepresenting what they really are will come to their senses, because they will see the results of liberal polcies, and that they will see that liberals don't govern as they campaign.
And I thiink he's right about that.
If there's a decent opponent in 2012, all that will have to be asked is "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?".
I've been to some liberal blogs and tried to bring up an opposing view (I was civil, I SWEAR!). The flood of venomous responses was immediate and vicious. and when I tried to refute the one individual that did respond with civility, I was kicked off.
This was at DailyKos, I've gone there since to see what has their panties in a bunch on any given day. I would swear the average age of the posters there is around 13…..
Well, I am only in the sense that I believe she would have been more of a pragmatist, and therefore less purely ideological in her agenda, than Obama has now shown himself to be.
I don't enjoy it, believe me – but I feel compelled to keep up with what the evil little buggers are up to. Not meaning this literally of course, but what movie was that that asked, "if it bleeds, we can kill it"? I've also found quite a few useful links from the useful idiots that I can actually use to countermand them.
They need to take that message to the people in a public forum. Who cares about the "Franking Commission"?
The thing I keep reminding myself is that Obama won the popular vote by only seven million votes. Now, I know that the popular vote doesn't matter (unless we're talking about the 2000 election). But that still means that there were a LOT of people who didn't vote for Obama.
There IS a base there – and it's one that CAN be tapped.
Personally? I think our own Andrew Breitbart should run.
Obviously not the Congressman who's already leaked it to the media.
Well, from my point of view it was Bob Dole who gave Clinton "term two". What a horrible campaign he ran. It was frighteningly reminiscent of the horrible campaign John McCain ran last year.
That's why I said earlier that we need a viable national candidate to rise up and seize the opportunity presented. It isn't enough for the dems to just blow their lead in the polls.
Oh, I hear you. The policy of the blog I visited was that you can NOT be censored merely for a difference in ideological thought, but that is bull. You can be as polite as pie and IF you get the comment posted, you'll be piled on. Others, can call for actual violence – as was inferred in the case of DeMint, or actually refer to Michael Steele as a "lawn jockey", the post will stand, and they'll be backslapped, faved and fanned by the plethora or morons who post there. Eye-opening, actually, if you can bear it.
Great find, Hank
or Leigh Scott…..the dude has some serious hair…..if a nice smile can get Obama elected…..just sayin……
I'm just wondering why this didn't surface during the campaign.
because someone doesn't agree with obama's policies, a liberal will attack with " YOU'RE RACIST " !
where as a smart conservative would have an articulate eloquent conversation and discussion. the liberal who has no brain capacity to calmly discuss will pounce with "YOU'RE RACIST" !
It's the equivalent of clapping your hands over your ears and shouting LALALALALALA
It's juvenile and silly….
The term “Jump the Shark” has been with us for a while. The clever metaphor is used for the moment when something of cultural significance begins to lose its luster
Much like articles that wonder whether <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&num=100&q=has+%22Jumped+the+Shark%3F%22&cts=1248460739149&aq=f&oq=&aqi=" title="">something has jumped the shark.
Unfortunately, there are still many who actually believe that Obama CARES about them. Some are smelling the coffee, but many are still asleep and ripe with delusion.

Hmm, well-mannered black guy revealed as worthless, versus shrill white woman known to be worthless. Yup, tough call…
I happily salute anybody who can illustrate their point with something from South Park.
Leigh Scott appears to have borrowed the "underpants gnome" analogy from a Wall Street Journal editorial from May 26, 2009 titled "Obama and the 'South Park' Gnomes." He really should've given the WSJ some attribution.
Exactly right! That's why I wish more Big Hollywood writers would proofread before they post. Simple mistakes make even the best work look poor. Witness many years of Scott Kurtz's typos in PvP, which ruined many strips before he became more conscientous!
It's not Leigh's idea-he stole it from a May 26 WSJ editorial titled "Obama and the 'South Park' Gnomes."
I am lobbying for a spell checker here as well.
"Begs the question" actually means "avoids the question".
It does not mean "prompts the question", no matter how many times it is misused that way…
Leigh stole the analogy from a May 26 WSJ editorial titled "Obama and the 'South Park' Gnomes." And this site is going to delete this post because I'm pointing it out. Very lame of you to hide Leigh's plagarism.

Google, find out that is related to some Fox show I have never seen, due to a posting on DemocraticUnderground thus I now know what "DU" stands for, which makes two more things crowding out valuable knowledge in my brain I may need some day, like the theme song to Beverly Hillbillies.
And I also found this example of unabashed capitalism combined with ego. Wonder how he voted.
I don't agree that liberals want everyone to have the same amount of "stuff." From what I've seen, it tends more to 'take what the Haves have and give it to the Have-Nots.' Because the Have-Nots have not had for so long, they're entitled to the prosperity of others. The prosperous, then, should be required to learn first-hand what it's like to go without. It's not equalization so much as role-swapping.
Our platform will include guaranteed hair care for all Americans. I think good hair is a fundamental right of all Americans. Now, let me be clear, we will have a public option for haircare as well as inspiring better quality and lower costs in the private hair care sector. Right now, at least 47 million Americans have bad hair. That's unacceptable.
"The clever metaphor is used for the moment when something of cultural significance begins to lose its luster, and descends into lameness. "
Hmmm….seems like an apt description for….the phrase "jump the shark"! Especially on this web site. Please stop using it so much.
The thing that worries me is these people (Obama Administration) are not stupid. They rushed that "stimulus" bill thru, but have only spent 5%. I think they are biding their time until we are closer to 2010 elections and then dump all that spending at once to give some timed boost to the economy to help the Dems keep their seats. Don't misunderstand me -Paul Krugman and Keynes dead wrong about government deficit spending being the way out of a recession. However spending 700 billion dollars over the 6 months running up to the 2010 elections probably would give some illusion of economic growth. Therefore, in addition to stopping cap & trade, health care, card check, we need to get the stimulus bill cancelled before these dolts blow it all. I do hear some talk about this very thing. Next teaparty I go to I will do my best to promote the recall of the the porkulus bills. As my hero Glenn Beck would say. "I'm just sayin'"
READ THIS: We all forget that a mere four years ago libs couldn't win an election and that it looked like red states from sea to shining sea. Then a series of critical conservative mistakes – the war wasn't adequately defended, social security changes weren't adequately defended by Bush, Basuh wasn't adequately defended by Bush, and the mainstream media went into hyper kill Bush mode, with no reaction from the White House. The critical issue is the ability of the mainstream media to marginalize conservatives – as conservatives our reaction to that has to be to AVOID mainstream media – avoid traditional network television, Hollywood, Time mag, Newsweek etc. The leftist media is out to destroy America as we now it so we have to destroy the mainstream media by avoiding it. By the way, "Happy Days" was declining long before Fonze jumped the shark – the shark jumping thing was like the nail in the coffin. I ama die hard conservative, but in a secret place in my heart I did want OBAMA to succeed and bring us together but he is Carter/Dinkins/Peolosi rolled up in one. And we have three and a half more years of this guy?
I tink all in all a goiod summary but I have a different take on the MSM. You can't really avoid them – millions of people don't listen to talk radio or surf the web – but you can't develop alternative channels. For the life of me I don't understand why Bush didn't defend himself – the MSM used him as a Pinata.
As long as the Soros millions are funding the media empire of liberalism, the libs will keep on fighting back – they have the means in the media, and the money – as conservatives we cannot go back to sleep once things get better and WE have marginalized the opposition. There will always be plenty to do – how in the heck are we going to clean up the mess that polticians on both sides of the aisle have caused? How will we pay back the debt that has been amasssed? And how are we going to create a new media to destroy the mainstream media that is bent on constantly ressurecting this monster – liberalism? Why can't the wealthy conservatives buy some entertainment companies and put out entertainment for conservatives – capitalism is about fining a need and filling it – well how about it you capitalists? An Australin figured it out (Murdoch) Conservative media sells!
The old lesser of two evils adage aye? As much as I dislike the Clintons I have to give credit where credit is due. Hillary is vastly more intelligent than Obama. Granted she's borderline "retarded", but even with this handicap she is still brighter than Barry. It's a choice between a "Bag of Rocks" (Obama) and a "Tick" (Hillary)?
I'd vote for The Tick anyday…..oh, you mean Hillary's a tick.
I thought you meant my favorite super hero
VERY very correct – the mainstream media will go into hyper drive around election time like the last two elections and they still have plenty of power. As conservatives we have to avoid mainstream media – just stay away from it – I wish that our talk radio people would just drop the left's media people from the conversation. They have no ratings so bury them in silence. Only four years ago we had red states from sea to shining sea – now we see how easy it was to slip away. So get active or we lose it all. Telephone, write, talk to neighbors, volunteer for the cause – it's all we do – plus put the money where the mouth is.
I'd rather have Hillary.
Maybe that should be a bumper sticker?
I think you have completely missed what the liberals really want. They don't want everyone to have the same amount of "stuff", they want power. They see giving poor people stuff as a means to that power. If you notice, the decission making is always in their hands.
Take health care. They could make it tax deductable instead of only the amount over 7.5% of your income. They have choices other than making it a government run entity. But they exempt themselves from having to use it and want to make choices about who gets what and how much. Its always about them gaining control.

He won the popular vote by 3 million votes in CA, 2 million in NY, 1.2 million in IL, and 800k in MI. All of these states have something in common – they are failing economically. There are your 7 million votes. 124 Electoral Votes in those 4 states. We let people who cannot run their own state choose our next President essentially. Great idea.
Yup. You are 100% correct on that one.
Yeah as much as you want this to be the case, it is not…Obama still has what are considered OUTSTANDING POLL numbers in a time of financial crisis brought on by the free spending ways of Reagan and the Bushs'!!! Even his 70% "trusted to address the needs of Americans" blows away the 40% number pulled by Palin.
To borrow a quote, "The rumor of Liberal demise has been greatly exaggerated" by you and those of you that wish, hop and pray for the failure of our President and our Country.
I thought Hillary was already a third rate show? I guess she could go lower though. She could get a job at CNN or MSNBC…………….
Get out of college, start "community organizing" to get noticed in the local political scene, then start campaigning for higher and higher office, putting as few comments on record as you can and only voting on things you can call a notch on your belt. Finally you get the top prize, and then? All he knows is campaigning. He is 47 and peaked in his career, with a job he does not know how to do, and nowhere to go.
Maybe that explains the worldwide apology tour. He is campaigning for UN Secretary General, last stop he can think of.
The Spice Girls will never fade into obscurity thanks to YouTube! *rocks out in desk chair*
Hi Scott – I have to apologize to the good readers of BH for my sometimes dyslexic writings – in rereading my original post to Demhater "can't avoid alternative channels" is of course "can"; in spite of it all you got my meaning
Yes; you are right – you can't avoid media you don't like (Bill Maher and Chris Mathews and exception?) – the whole point of Andrew Breitbart's view on "change" (good change of course) is to engage them in their own venues – but going on Bill Maher's show – that takes some real cojones
I like yours better! The big blue guy would definitely be a better President than those two…………………
True that. Double true!
Ah gee, and here I thought troll traffic had gone down so far because school was out and the weather was nice. It finally sunk in that they are no longer getting class credit for "political activism" so they might as well hang out at the skate park instead.
Or maybe, (*gasp!*) they got summer jobs and realized they pay taxes too. Perish the thought!
Excuse me, are you the designated troll for this site? Because, really, I think you got a bum deal on this assignment. All the cool liberals are over at HuffPo right now. Go check it out!
Hopefully this burst of liberalism is just a dead cat bounce.

Great piece. I am inclined to think tht we have, in fact, reached that tipping point where the truth about Modern Liberalism — that it leads its brain-dead followers to INVARIABLY and INEVITABLY side with evil, failure and wrong over the good, right and successful.
Immediately after Obama's election I turned to a wise political pro I know and said "What do we do now?" He said "nothing, keep our fingerprints off of this coming disaster so the American people will know who is to blame."
Actually the double quotes in that URL screwed up the HTML tag.

Of course, the risk of that is that while we're doing nothing, they'll do just barely enough so that if conditions stop bottoming out, they'll be able to take credit for it and shout us down. As someone mentioned up the thread, less than 5% of the stimulus money has been spent at this time; it wouldn't surprise me if they were to dump it back into the economy next summer, to trick the American public (just in time) into thinking, "Wow, the Democrats were right and the Republicans were wrong, the stimulus really DOES work!"
What about redistribution? Will it be patriotic to give up some of our own hair to share with those who don't have hair?
Actually the economy today, with the largest 3 month growth rate in over 10 years is the result of Obama….The $10.7T deficit he assumed from W and Reagan (Carter + Clinton = $1.4T of the deficit, Ronnie + the Bushs' = $9.5T), the $700B Wall street bailout was signed into Law by W on Oct 22, 2008…The Recession we are in is documented as beginning in December 2007, 13 months before Obama took office…
So explain how these events that occurred a full year to two years prior to Obama taking office are a result of his actions, since I am such an idiot?
As for what the Media says about Obama, how would you know? Do you read or listen to anything other than State Run Media (in this case the State is not Russia, but the GOP)? At least I can go to Huffington Post 2 or 3 times a week and find a story bashing Obama…Can you go to Townhall or the Wasington Times and find ANYTHING opposing the Conservative line?
As an erstwhile Conservative who shot Communists long ago, in the service of my country, I walked away from Conservatism when Reagan sold arms to our enemies in Iran. The problem, folks, isn't Liberal Ideology, however misguided it may seem. It's harder to be a Liberal: all Liberal causes are embodied in manifestly horrible people like Rodney King and Gitmo detainees. Being a Conservative is easy: get government out of my life, pay as you go, personal responsibility, don't screw up what works — but society changes faster than mankind is evolving.
Don't kid yourselves, people. I'm an old man and I feel like Roy Batty in Blade Runner. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. The Liberals haven't jumped the shark. The Conservatives, (read the GOP) haven't adapted. Still the same old mugging for the rubes: Jesus Christ, if the Conservatives only did what they said they were going to do, they'd still be in power. But they didn't, and they never do, in fact, they do the exact opposite (can you say "Nation Building" boys n girlz?) every time.
Reality bites, folks. Campaigns are all flags and torchlight parades and songs and poetry. Governance is the dullest of prose. The Conservatives, when they were in power, refused to govern as Conservatives, that's why they got voted out.
To be clear, the 3 month growth rate I reference is with respect to the Dow and NASDAQ…
Of course Liberals don't taste as good, Cons have all the fat that adds flavor! But thank you for acknowledge that Libs have brains!
What will Republicans look like…..nothing more than–> "hey, we're available to pick up the pieces"?
As bad as current Obama/Democrat policies are, voters are still confronted with what appears to be a Void in Conservative politics. Conservative politics IS the business of the Republican Party, or it is nothing at all but existing in the shadows of 21st century socialism in America.
And do we get to choose WHERE on the body that hair comes from?
"I had hair implants with hair taken from my privates…now, every time I see a pretty girl, my hat pops off."
It's the Shut Up Doctrine in action.
Your starting off with a 10.7T defecit and you blame that on Reagan and Both Bush's? you have to be kidding me…. what was the size of the SO CALLED spending bill that OBAMA PUSHED through?
I read your post about three times and honestly cannot and will not reply to anything…. your blaming BUSH's and REAGAN for what is going on now? man, that is HILARIOUS!!!!
Yes. We need to take those "rich" with hair and have them spread it around to those who are bald. For too long in our country, those with luscious locks have exploited those who are follically challenged.
When pressed to answer whether or not I will shed my locks I will dodge and duck the question.
Excellent post. I've been thinking the along the same lines. I just finished Rules for Radicals and one of the 1st rules is not to get caught up in dogma. The left is stuck to the dogma of identity politics and nanny government. If conservatives follow another of Alisny's rules, hold them to their own rules, it will soon be proven that neither identity politics or big government can work.
So now the Dow and NASDAQ are the indicators of economic growth. When Obama's election forced the Dow to tank, we heard that either A)he has nothing to do with it or B)that the stock market isn't indicative to the overall economy.
This post exemplifies the simple fact that liberals do not understand economics. I once spent three hours explaining to an "educated" liberal that the oft talked about "Clinton surplus" didn't mean that he had erased the national debt, just that we weren't adding to it.
So the Dow grows BACK to within 5,000 points of where it once was and this is heralded as an achievement? And yes, this return is due to Obama, it's due to the fact that his policies are starting to fail and the financial sector is starting to allow their hope to translate into action.
Do yourself a favor and make a little graph that shows you how the stock market and Obama's approval ratings and perceived success are inversely proportional.
Leigh — Great post. Incisive, compact, insightful. You are now officially on my list of top BH contributors.
Leigh your first paragraph states it all…. Obama said that the dow was NO INDICATOR of how the economy was doing…. I just love how the liberals can blame this all on REAGAN or the BUSH's… being that we are at this… why not blame it on themen that started this country for being a capitalist society…..Thanks for giving me some levity today!!!!
Good point. Obama is going to get his reparations one way or the other.
I hope and pray that you're right, Mr. Scott.
We still lack one thing: an electable national leader for 2012. I'm looking, and I don't see anyone at this time.
<edit>
Someone will show up any minute now and say "Sarah Palin". Sorry, but I don't see her pulling any independents or otherwise apoliticals. She's still popular among conservatives, but that won't be enough to unseat an incumbent President.
I'm going to have to agree with Quek.
The ends justify the means. They know best how to keep the world working if we would just give them the authority to run every aspect of our lives. Name one government run entity that anyone looks forward to dealing with.
just to spite him, i'll go commando…
Old Tom, you are so correct, Bob Dole couldn't have won a one man race, the choice between Obama & McCain was "do we want the cool, black liberal, or the old white liberal". Where's RR when we need him?
(maybe wearing high heels?)
In the sixties, the liberal left took drugs to "deal with life" and make everything "far out" and now they want to dope up America to make us all "normal"? That should be an indicator that something is seriously wrong. As for liberal ideology, it is not about uniform ownership of anything but of power and control by the state over the masses. There will always be two classes of people even in the "socialist utopia" they want to condemn us with. The new royalty will be anyone with a government job and the rest of us will just have to learn to sacrifice and live without so that they can enjoy the benefits of being part of the ruling class.
As for conservatives, they have much more in common with more libertarians than they do with republicans these days … and while I can only speak for myself, I do not doubt the veracity of this statement for a large number of other conservatives as well.
The biggest problems we face are the social welfare class who have been brought up into a family who has made a multi-generational career choice of living on the welfare roles without ever having contributed to society. For those that foolishly believe this is a racist statement, I grew up in the Appalachian mountains where we have very few ethnically diverse anything and the welfare roles remain high from generation to generation. These people will gladly give more and more power to the government in order to make sure that they have a paycheck next month. In addition to this, the ignorance and apathy of such a large portion of the American population and the degradation of the educational institutions (indoctrination centers?) has led us to an increasingly un-educated populace incapable of competing in our society, much less in the global society that we are rapidly evolving into. When you toss in the other social ills, modern liberalism is just the expression or the result of what has been building up for so long.
"You can take them to the Gulags, line them up against the wall and still they will not understand."
A virtual hero cookie for the person who can name the individual who said that.
I believe the opposite: It's EASY to be a liberal, and it's HARD to be a conservative.
Liberals largely deal in "feelings" whether it be guilt, charity, or empathy — everything is relevant to them.
Conservatism is an intellectual pursuit. We strive to understand our Founders, and what they intended. We strive for a country that still values self-governance and personal accountability, and we look for ways to keep that integrated in our day-to-day life.
No one can argue that conservatives in power lost their way a bit. But we lost power because the voters are largely ignorant to the current events. The Democrats caused the economic crisis by creating the sub-prime mortgage crisis with the Community Reinvestment Act and redlining. They infused it all with a racial element, making it taboo for any politician to attack it.
George W. Bush AND John McCain saw these problems, but refused to blow the Dems out of the water for it when they both had the power of the podium.
Obama's ascension was powered by a perfect storm of wimpy conservatives, and a celebrity-obsessed culture.
I like Scott's piece here because I too felt liberals would eventually jump the shark, and that it's good to get this process out of the way sooner rather than later.
Yes, I believe you're right. Another voice of "it doesn't rise to the level of impeachment" mantra. And, he's always stuck close to McCain, author or co-sponsor of bills like amnesty for Illegals and McCain-Feingold, if I remember correctly.
It's time for Graham to go, and he can take a bunch of his buddies with him.
He may want to consult Sotomayor the next time he speaks…
It appears as if that may be exactly what he did
Enough Is Enough For President 2012!
That's a lot to fit on a bumper sticker
How about this for a bumper sticker:
"I never thought I would miss the Clintons"
Haha. Clearly you weren't around for the 1950s and 1960s. I was. The people taking the drugs were the housewives. People used to drink in the office. You don't remember Miltown or all those horribly addictive sleeping pills. Get a grip.
Want to live in a Conservative Utopia? Come to Guatemala. I live there, have been there for 30 years, own businesses there. The military runs everything, servants are dirt cheap, taxes are low. Of course, I also have a three meter wall around my property with electrified barbed wire and broken glass embedded in the concrete on top. Kidnappings are frequent and deadly.
What you don't get, and never will get until you've lived in a Conservative Utopia, is that the rich are scared to death of the poor. The reason we don't live behind three meter walls in the USA is because we're not scared of the poor, they aren't /as/ poor.
No attribution necessary. Back when the Dems were first discussing the "stimulus" package, the first thing I thought of was the Underpants Gnomes.
I think it is perfectly reasonable to assume others would come up with the same connection.
Well, campaigning for higher office is the only "job" Obama has ever had. Aside from his "community organizing". He's been a legislator, so-called, but what legislation has he ever written?
Campaigning is really about all he's qualified to do. He looks more and more like a clueless dilletante, selling a "plan" that has yet to be written by somebody else.
You get points for pointing out the misuse of "begs the question", but you lose points for incorrectly defining it as "avoids the question".
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begs_the_question:
"Begging the question (or petitio principii) is a logical fallacy in which the proposition to be proved is assumed implicitly or explicitly in the premises."
Here's an example:
Sarah Palin is dumb because she is so stupid.
If you are correct, then why are you wasting your time talking to us?
In many ways, the best way to defeat liberalism was to put them in charge of everything. Now, they have no one but themselves to blame for the results that their governorship produces.
BTW, I always felt that the Republicans foolishly "jumped the shark" when they wasted all of their political capital on the Terry Shiavo case. What a waste…
ive heard the term skid marks, bacon strips but never that LOL
Well running for the shelter of their mother's little helper was a theme for the Rolling Stones but oddly enough, I never personally pictured Keith Richards and his followers as being the "Housewife" of old.
As for your Conservative Utopia? Have fun in Guatemala, y antes yo vi\\via en Chiapas entonces yo se como es por alla y por eso me fue. Translation: And before, I lived in Chiapas (Which is actually in Mexico on the border) and I know how it is there which is why I left.
I now live in the Philippines and have for the last six years. The people are much poorer here than they are in most parts of the US though I seriously doubt that you have spent any time in the Appalachian Mountains as the poor there are equally as poor as many in Mexico and here in the Philippines. I live behind no walls with no fear for my life here. I drink beer, gin and eat with the locals on a regular basis. I am not called derogatory names due to the color of my skin. Mind you, that may be because I too am poor and actually live with the poor and not behind some protective shelter that divides me and sets me apart from them. The poor here do rebel but against the government and not against the people. (Though there are some religious groups in the Southern Philippines that make an exception to this rule)
Looks like you have discovered your conservative utopia behind the comfort and security of your walls separating you from the people while I have found what most closely resembles any "perfect" situation given the state of society by tearing down those walls. The differences between us are more than just ideological in nature it would seem.
Jake, thanks, but I misspoke slightly. We were discussing legilsation and legislative maneuver given what was then a 59 seat majority for the Dems. I do think that we continue to speak out as the (loyal) opposition (loyal to America, not BHO) and to use our energies to make it difficult for the Blue Dogs to do anything other than stand with us.
This is the problem I have with Hill: she is more of a pragmatist and so would be that much better at pushing her agenda through. And so America would continue to slowly drift in the direction of becoming more and more statist. (And, although I voted for McCain, I fear the same thing would have happened with him.)
It's far too early to say yet, but it is my hope that Obama overreaches himself in a way Hill would never do, and the country reacts by giving itself a colonic in 2012.
But, yeah, it is worrisome that we don't have a Reagan waiting in the wings. I like Palin, but gee, I wish now McCain hadn't picked her. A few more years of competently running Alaska and then bursting on the national scene would not have made her more loved by the lefties, but remember that Reagan had put in plenty of time running California.
Sounds more like "jump the land shark".
Hmmm, today Rasmussen reports that Obama's disapproval rating is 51% – the same as Palin's. And Palin has had almost year's worth of slime dumped on her, while the MSM has been kissing BO's behind from Day 1.
Nice to see liberals care about our Country -for now anyway. I predict your patriotism will vanish as Barry's numbers continue to fall.
Yeah. A LOT of sophomoric name-calling and blatant hate and venom from the movement that promotes "peace", "love", and "coverage for EVERY American" (and apparently illegal alien). Nauseating.
there are some who work hard at pointing out their view, and while I am rarely convinced, I do appreciate it when anyone attempts to raise the level of discourse above that of the childish name calling.
If they are respectful towards me, I reciprocate.

No, just the usual facts.
What in the jumping Joe Bidens are you talking about?
Um…no. The show's creators made the analogy. It is widely understood to be a metaphor for socialism, liberalism, elitism or acting without a plan.
The entire episode is about capitalism. It details the efforts of a small business owner who makes crappy coffee who tries to use the children of South Park and a bunch of lies to stop the construction of a Starbucks.
For the record, I hadn't read the article you mentioned until you just pointed it out. Additionally, I googled "South Park gnomes" and found a wikipedia page for them. It contains this little fact:
"Paul Cantor, a literary and economic professor who uses South Park episodes to teach courses, said "no episode of South Park I have taught has raised as much raw passion, indignation, and hostility among students as 'Gnomes' has. I’m not sure why, but I think it has something to do with the defensiveness of elitists confronted with their own elitism.""
So the episode is being taught in classes. Does the Wall Street Journal owe that professor a nod? Or do we all owe a debt of gratitude to the geniuses Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
I think "great minds think alike" may be a better assessment here opposed to "another conservative plagiarist caught red handed".

And some of the people on this site actually work in Hollywood and are trying to change attitudes within. As someone who'd like to work in the biz one day (and I'm sure there are several others here with the same goals), the whole AVOID posture doesn't really help, as sincere as it might be. Better to ENGAGE or CREATE. And as the reviewers on this site have noted, there have been plenty of good (non-political or non-left) films in the last several years worth watching (Dark Knight, Taken, etc.). Otherwise, the bad stuff will simply rise to the top.
I think it's a mistake to assume that Obama's declining polls means liberalism is a fad and that the Right will make its come-back soon. A lot of the left is upset with Obama… because he's not strong enough with his liberalism. He hasn't done enough to come through on his promises, and things are still going badly.
Not that Conservatives won't make a come-back — they surely will — but it's a mistake to see it here. A lot of hard work is needed yet.
Don't know about you StlDan, but I for one am enjoying watching my Liberal friends squirm. Things aren't going quite like they planned and there getting very nervous. It's so funny watching them try to explain Barry's actions! It always seems to end with the question not being answered and them stating "Well he's better than Bush"! Really? (Insert laughter here!)
Your right though, the sword has been unsheathed, I just hope they don't fall on it to quickly. This is just starting to get fun to watch…………
Fun? Yes, such as the guilty pleasure it is.
You are absolutely right. The glitter on Obama has faded, but he's a long way from 'finished.' In any case, Leftism is a perennial modern heresy. It will NEVER go away.
We need to fight for freedom in every generation. Not just our heroes on the battlefield, but the rest of us have to fight. And we have to preserve and defend our heritage, pass it down to our kids.
I am going to say "no" because every ten years or so the liberals claim that conservatism is dead only for temporary life to be brought back… Something tells me it's a 2-way street.
The whole country has jumped the shark…look at the news the last two days: a police officer does his job and a sitting President belittles him publicly for it. Forget Joe DiMaggio, where have you gone Thomas Jefferson? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I believe you meant to Reply to Chris' post and not mine. I was defending you.
Ditto.
If not McCain, I could live with Hillary in the White House. Anyone with eyes and ears could see that Obama was not good for the country in a big way. McCain and Hillary wouldn't have been all that great either, but I think both of them would have stood up to Iran, Russia and North Korea more than Obama.
We also found out that BO is delusional — "We can add 50 million new people to Universal Healthcare without a penny of added costs and nothing to add to our now Trillions of deficit" in the latest national press conference. And that Susan Boyle bumped THE MESSIAH from the time slot he wanted!
I agree with the theme of the article. I think what we're going to see in the first full year of BHO is basically an entire oligarchy-style take over of just about everything, and even if the Dems lose every seat in both houses in 2010, most of that theft will never be reversed. Love the South Park reference! Keep it simple, right?

I would like to see David Petraeus as the next Republican nominee for POTUS. Anybody know his politics?
Excellent column!
It sounds good but I think YOU ARE WRONG. Wrong to the extent that these people, some call them Liberals, Statists, or whatever term you want, are generationally relentless. This idea of destroying the US Constitution, has been going on for over 100 years now. If there is anything we can learn from history is that certain people have no greater goal than to rule over other people. Even if the Liberal (a misnamed agenda) is beaten back here, they will regroup and come back. Keep in mind that if Obama and Congress pass any of the horrifying legislation, (cap and trade, nationalized health care, amnesty of illegals, etc) liberals can be institutialized for years. CONSERVATIVES BEWARE. The battle is not over. Don't get cocky.
Jindal would make an outstanding president. He's well-spoken but a straight talker. He understands conservatism and how to enunciate its virtues in a way that people can understand and relate to. He is electable, but I don't see too many other who are.
There's plenty of time before 2012 for someone to step forward, but I see a real opportunity for real conservatives who voted against the stimulus in the upcoming 2010 races.
You had me until I hit that sentence after the South Park clip with not one but two spelling mistakes in it. If you can't get "it's" right, stop wasting my time.
Ward, I enjoyed this little exchange between the two of you. Also, thank you for providing a link to your website. A very interesting place to visit. Seems as if you've carved out a good life for yourself.
As for the Gulag quote, would that be Sharansky?
Indeed. Thanks for the backup!
God, what a bunch of silly mediocre douchebags you people are. You talk your little talking points at each other and think you're doing anything other than falling right into line for what others wish you to be – dollar signs for a bunch of super rich assholes like Rupert Murdoch with multiple mansions, private jets and 80 million dollar yachts. You've been buying it since Reagan, and you're still a bunch of poor, doomed white guys.
Well, they say that when you argue with a fool, you become a fool too. So I won't say anymore because I know you're all hopeless dummies. Pathetic. And so boring.
Hello, I don't normally get involved in these kind of discussions particularly importantly because its not my country (i'm from the UK) but this article is really bugging me and the comments that i've read.
I think its probably just a transatlantic difference but generally speaking, none of what Leigh Scott has referred to as liberalism, I would personally describe as liberalism. Is the term just being used to describe the democrats ideology?
A couple of other questions that I have in my head at the moment would be that do people actually genuinely believe that Obama is a socalist?
And my final one, and i'm not trying to stir anyone up with this. I read a lot of politics, mostly american because generally I find it quite fascinating but i've always wondered is the level of vitriol and hatred that you see on almost all the blogs (on both sides of the aisle) also in real life??

Word to the wise or so they think…life is not about right or left, good or bad, liberalism or conservatives, rich or poor, life or death…we are all heading towards a journey of failure. 5% of the word populations is were they need to be, the rest of us are walking a fine line. For there is always a opposite believe system, there are pros and cons to every situations. Inform yourself about the world, read different books so that you can be informed. Most of us are not aware about what's going on in the world. Stop reading other people's view points, watching televisions, and new reports. Go to the library and read, then seriously… sit down and think about the future with no influences, what you think. A wise man once said…
"I would hate to see 'liberal' go the way of the swastika." Interesting … didn't expect to find that one! An excellent bit of commentary!
That makes sense … after all, why bother having open debate. The main point of their agenda is to draft lengthy, overly complicated bills and make sure no one has a chance to actually read them before voting on them!
Three more years of this guy … yeah, that's about right. With everything he's trying to jam into the first 6 months to a year, what's he going to do with the rest of his term? Play golf?
Wow, Matthew … bitter much? Talking points? Look who's talking! Why is that the only group in the news that CONSTANTLY reiterates the SAME points using almost EXACTLY the SAME language are the lefties, who basically regurgitate the Democratic party's talking points memos practically verbatim. I'm not saying conservatives are entirely right about everything … nobody is, but at least they're creative enough to speak for themselves, on camera or in print.
And don't give me that "dollar signs" rubbish (though it is better than the usual liberal "talking points" that blame Bush, or what's been inherited from the last eight years, etc.). Government isn't and never has been the answer to our ills, redistribution of wealth may look good on paper, but wait until it happens to you, and if you think healthcare costs too much now, wait until you see how much it costs when it's free (P.J. O'Rourke).
Robert G, what is called "liberalism" should more accurately be called "leftism" as actions really do speak louder than words.
Do not confuse the modern progressive or liberal with a classic liberal as they are incompatible in realtime. Today's conservatives are closer in ideology to the classic liberalism of our Founding Fathers and today's "progressives" are closer to the oppressive King George. Bizarre times we live in? Indeed!
"Identity politics, when viewed in its purest form, is racism."
This entire article is "Identity Politics". What does that make the author, hm?
Step two is the same as step one -destroy traditional value capitalistic America, taking the people's freedom and putting uit under youor control. I could care what it's label is liberalism, progressivism, Marxism, fascism, socialism wtc. it is alway tyo its core evil and decitful as to its intent.
Touch my underpants at your own risk, shoud have been the South Park kids answerf.

"Can the party of Howard Dean, the Daily Kos and Keith Olbermann remain relevant?" Okay. Nuff said there.
"We are heading towards a whole new era in American politics." Well. You hope. And I hope. Great stuff dude. You know it's great stuff when all I do is quote you. LOL
We Americans – ex-the hyper-libs – have one last chance to make it right.
A very good article. I also think that young people graduating from college or high school are going to find "Hope & Change" unemployment not too "cool." Jimmy Carter did a great job in creating an entire generation of young conservatives which was helped by Ronald Reagan. Obama is a racist version of Carter.
Nice how Pepsico wh*res allowed Obama to take their Pepsi logo for the Obama hope and change logo. How original. Pepsi uses rot gut corn syrup for their sweetner that is far worse than Coca Cola's paint stripper. Avoid.
One would think come 2010, the GOP wouldn't have to constantly remind the 'swing voter' of the failures of the Democrats. But unfortuntately, attention spans are short and you have to combat the usual class-warfare tactics used to overcome their sins.
That was not a very wise comment. If you go to the library and read…books are written by people, so you are still reading other people's view points.
I think Obama is a Marxist. When he was first elected to state Senate he belonged to the New Party, a communist organization in Chicago.
"Can the party of Howard Dean, the Daily Kos and Keith Olbermann remain relevant?"
They will if the right foists another McCain as a candidate.
It may have jumped the shark, but it could still do a lot of irreversible things in the time it has left in power. No country that has adopted Socialized Medicine has ever repealed it. Once the population is dependent on such an entitlement, they are stuck, and the politics of that country moves permanently leftward. I have no confidence in changing anything in 2010's elections, since the huge Stimulus (Porkulus) is mostly spent in the first 6 months of 2010, and will provide a huge economic boost right before the election. More likely, the Democrats will get small House gains in 2010 and huge Senate gains, and will (wrongly) see that as a true mandate to go whole hog with Socialism. Eventually we will face the music of all this spending, but the day of reckoning can be put off for quite some years. And again – Socialized Medicine will never be repealed once enacted.
I'll second that – or, at least, he should be appointed chief speechwriter.
We'll know liberalism has jumped the shark when Ted McGinley joins the White House staff.
Keep in mind that Moderates and Independents decide elections in this country. They are the only people who will actually switch their votes from election to election. These voting groups are largely non-ideological, and still get most of their news from the MSM. Most moderates are primarily concerned with their own lives and have no time for anything other than 1/2 hour of TV news. They think about politics only during election season. Ideological conservative voters tend to use the more specialized media that expresses their views and keep the TV off. Liberals watch the most leftwing TV outlets and use their own web sites. As long as the MSM is firmly on the side of the Democrats, the moderates and independents will vote Democratic.
Yes, the Democratic Congress knew exactly what it was doing when it crafted the Porkulus. It is designed to get them reelected and even grab additional Senate seats – and it will work. The current economic stimulus we are feeling today was really enacted by Bush and financed by the Fed – it is called TARP, and the spending of 3/4 of a trillion bailing out the banks averted a second great Depresion.
I don't absolve the Republicans of blame in the Financial Crisis. It isn't all Barney Frank's fault. Greenspan kept interest rates too low for too long, and Bush's regulators enabled the insane risk taking by the investment bank industry and allowed them to lever up to 40:1. I don't believe that they didn't know what could happen, but they wanted the short term benefits, and hoped to kick the can into 2009 when they would be out of office. Greenspan clearly know he was fueling a bubble, and was even advocating ARMs in 2004. It is only because some players got too greedy that the subprime mess exploded when it did, and cut the party short early.
Its "bode well" not "bold well"
Her lawyer writes me all the time.
Hippie liberalism? Please…..
Actually I could see where you would come up with Natan Sharansky but it was actually a former Russian KGB Agent who was discussing why the former USSR spent nearly one third of their budget on Psychological Warfare and the destruction of the USA from within. He is Former KGB agent and Soviet defector Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov and he talked about how complete their brainwashing had been … in fact so complete that you could take these people and show them the prison camps (gulags) where their enemies were held and they still would not understand. In fact, he added that you could take them to the camps, line them up against the wall and only as they were being summarily executed might they realize what they had done, though it remained doubtful that they would. There is a series of videos from an old television interview he did in the seventies and it is very revealing. I remember only because my parents and grandparents were interested at the time.
So it didn't possibly occur to you that I might not have known about that? And is it really a matter of plagiarism if he illustrated his point using the same thing as someone else? I was paying a compliment…maybe you can use Obamacare to remove that enormous stick from your rear?
Again, use your brain.
Apparently this struck a nerve with you…bored much?
Stan,
I am not sure ideals will make a difference. I have come to the conclusion something happens when these dim wits get into office. President Bush had it all set up to truly promote some great ideas. But I knew early on we were in trouble when he presented an education bill (in conjunction with Ted Kennedy of all people) that gave the Dems everything they wanted (more money for the system) and did nothing to change the system (namely instituting vouchers). I have hope that the Dems can be defeated, but I have lost hope that anyone can go to DC and really change anything (it seems to change them).
You're obviously very important, then…perhaps you should stop wasting your time posting here and change sites?
Jon Stewart has visited BigHollywood, ladies and gentlemen!
Still smarter than you.
'All of these little vignettes…do not bold well for our little leftist friends.'
"do not bold well" – are you kidding me, did you graduate middle school?
I don't know if I would say liberalism has "jumped the shark", but in the past 2-3 weeks, it's reared it's head from mainstream politics. I would say the "Right" has been way out of mainstream and has horrible leaders and voices currently. Thus the democrats or "left" voices made more sense. I think the "left" has been on such a run, that they did the same as the "right" in defending anything that comes from their side. And lately, it's been turning me off. With Olberman out this week, Shuster was in & he was unwatchable. Everything was about trying to make fun of the "GOP", when they we're quiter this week (thank god) and the "left" were making buffoons of themselves or showing their true colors.
it's "do not bode well" (not "bold well")
As I said when the liberals were wetting their pants when Obama got elected and being very sore winners, enjoy it while you can because the victory dance is going to be short. Obama and the congress is all yours so you can't blame anyone else. All ready 2010 is looking to be a very good year.
Just curious… do you think that the lack of a viable candidate (McCain) at the top had an effect on the other races? Did McCain insure wins for Dems because he created no 'faith and trust' levels?
that's pretty much the liberal response to anything someone with an articulate, eloquent and informed tells them. I pretty much just give them the caveman routine as that is all they understand.
no, all i want is your souls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Liberalisn is not dead. I will win because I am, Iam!!!!!!
You little people, you understand noting. I will crush your lilly white asses and bring workers paradise to Amerika!!!!
I'm not racist, I hate ALL white people, not just some. I am half white, so how could I be racist?
Death to America!!! Skip Gates is rosa parks of today!!!
I need a smoke.
Yeah, fascist leftism jumped the Fonzi-shark a long time ago. VladLenin, JosefStalin, Pol Pot, the near-illiterate HugoChavez, and now Barack Obama stir the gullible mass into one more political kabuki: Let's-pretend-this-is-real-and-we-will-kill-you-if-you-don't-play-our-game: AS IF their threats of Death and ability to kill were a real BIG deal. "If our hope was only in this world we would be, of all men, most miserable." Kinda like AxelRham and their sockpuppet Obambam: all of their "hope" is flushed in the draught with their morning BM. Miserable Chicago-stockyard churls. Away! Away with the lot of ye!
Haha, do you even remember how badly you conservatives got crushed in the election?
Ecch, listen, I can't buy that Feelings stuff. Dude, I watched this country fall in love with that old lying shyster Ronald Reagan, who was about as Conservative as my Labrador retriever. You know perfectly well this business about Conservatism is an intellectual pursuit, an honorable pursuit. But don't kid yourself, what passes for Conservatism today is nothing of the sort. Want to be a Conservative? Read Edmund Burke. There's where the Conservatives need to go for inspiration.
The Conservatives didn't lose their way A Little Bit. They sold out to the highest bidder. Obama was elected on a bout of nausea in reaction to George W Bush, who wasn't a patch on his daddy's ass. I respected GHWB41, a good man, who did the right thing because that was how he was raised.
This economic crisis was created by deregulation, going back to well before even Clinton. I'm an old man, as I said, I've watched the Congress and the Administration try to blame each other for every failure and take credit for every success.
Get real folks, an honest Liberal is the best friend a Conservative could ever have. We require each other to make sense of the world.
I LOVE these posts by the lefties, they show me so much about how they think (or don't, however you like it). Look at their posts, " it's BODE well! not BOLD dum-dum! nah nah" , they contain absolutely no thought whatsoever. Even the "But 47 Millions of teh deds if we don't haz insurances!!!!! You heartless A=hole!!!! " is a dumb thing to say because it's obviously ridiculous. People who act in an independent and individual manner may seem like selfish no-goodniks (hehe) but they have an individuals concerns at heart. It's when you start thinking of the "GREATER GOOD" (Quotes mine, GOD I kick ass) that you begin to view people as assets rather than people.
