What Will Hollywood Do If Obama Fails?
by Lewis FeinWhat will Hollywood do if President Obama fails? Forget simply preserving the status quo or making marginal improvements for this agency or that constituency, but fails to even remotely square the difference between the promise of his administration and its actual performance. This is not to wish failure upon our – yes, our – new president, since I actually like Barack Obama the person (not Obama, The Messiah™) and have no desire to see the economy worsen or Islamic terror gain additional traction, but should this presidency be a stillborn effort to suspend politics-as-we-know-it and have us wave our ploughshares in an impromptu chorus of “Yes We Can” — don’t expect a single film to even criticize President Obama, or use him as a metaphor for military defeat or political impotence. The future decade will simply vanish, a missing gap far wider than anything Rose Mary Woods could accidentally erase. How do I know? Because there isn’t a single film of any repute, during or after the presidencies of Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton, that addresses the (many) failures of these men.
In the case of Carter, the films of the Seventies – and let it be known that I venerate this fabled period, like any good cinephile – are a smorgasbord of dramas about Vietnam and Watergate, with customary attention paid to the machinations of evil corporations (Pakula, Alan; see films of) or faux populists (Altman, Robert; see ”Nashville”). Content with attacking Richard Nixon, or using him as an all purpose villain who might as well have been Lee Harvey Oswald’s accomplice, Jimmy Carter simply . . . fades away, Hollywood’s forgotten man who nonetheless managed to reap a whirlwind of economic ruin and humiliation in the Middle East. But it is Carter’s facade of honesty – “I will never lie to you” – that insulates him from nothing more biting than a few sketch comedy acts on ”Saturday Night Live,” with Dan Aykroyd as the pious Southern governor who kept George Washington’s honesty and traded the cherry tree for a bag of Georgia peanuts.
There is no oblique or transparent critique of Carter’s presidency, for Hollywood accepts this period as (at best) forgetful or (at worst) another dark chapter in the Nixon White House, any successor to the Oval Office having been made seemingly irrelevant by the actions of ”The Man with the Five O’clock Shadow,” a trespasser in the home of Roosevelt and Kennedy.
The memory hole is even worse with Hollywood’s approach to Bill Clinton. The adulation for Clinton takes shape in films (“The American President,” “The Contender”) and TV (“The West Wing”), an alternate universe where the president has all of Clinton’s presumed smarts – and a Nobel Prize, too! -without any of the bimbo eruptions, or mean-spirited conservatives who seek to leave one third (at least) of the nation ill-housed, ill-clad and ill-nourished. The Clinton of the movies is more charming and handsome (thank you, Jeff Bridges) than his real-life self, a man beset by hapless foes or outrageous hypocrites. Always eloquent and slow to anger – the cinematic Clinton is justifiably righteous in his indignation – this fictional president never overlooks the plans of jihadists or others who want to harm the United States. Thus makeup artists apply powder to Clinton’s nose, costumers give him better tailored suits and his Southern accent becomes a rich baritone — voila, I present you Ronald Reagan without conviction.
Hollywood now finds itself in love with The One – and that infatuation, which rivals the sort of hysteria that citizens normally display in totalitarian countries, will never dissolve into criticism. Disappointment, perhaps. But that disappointment will be the lament of what-might-have-been, a debate over the promise of the Obama administration’s efforts to return to Eden. Before the Republicans attacked. Before our innocence died. Before we came to our senses.

Obama is too big fail.
The question of what Hollywood will do if Obama fails is easy to answer…nothing. Absolutely nothing. Except, of course, for blaming the right for the failure.
The thing is, Obama can’t ‘fail’. His goals are to imprecise to measure, and the media (and of course the libceleb crowd) let him get away with it.
For example, he says he’s going to ‘create or save 3 million jobs’. What exactly does that mean? It means nothing at all, because it’s not measurable. Imagine if Bush said such tripe. What would the media have done then?
Oh and for the record, I too will create or save jobs this year, except I’m raising the bar. I’m going to create or save 100 MILLION jobs! You can’t really disprove it, can you.
The SNL skits attacking Jimmy Carter were actually from the left, not the right (the most famous one, the “Amazing Colossal President” skit, went after Carter for his continued support of nuclear power after Three Mile Island). The same will hold true for Obama. If there are going to be any attacks from Hollywood (SNL’s actually a little better now in their even-handedness because senior writer James Downey’s a Republican), the attacks will come because Obama choses Clinton-Morris triangulation towards the middle over leftist idealism, and angers Tinseltown backers on the far left who feel the new president as sold them out.
In four years Hollywood may be telling their fnntasy stories through the eyes of the Chinese government….or Chavez.
Obama is too big to fail
If Obama fails-and he will, the crass, erotic, codependent, gushing relationship between him and his followers and buddies in Hollywood, the News Media and Academia will follow exactly what the Author wrote.
Well written Lewis.
He won’t fail – not that we’ll ever hear about at any rate. The next four years will be full of entertainment making sure we know how how Bush’s failures continue to plague our country and, well, hey! Guess what? Obamas next campaign will be all about needing four more years to straighten it all out! By that time we’ll be a broken people and won’t care who signs our checks.
People get the government they deserve.
What do you mean “if” he fails?
Naysayers — say what you want, pretend the “truth” is on your side. The Truth is that a liberal wanted to tell the story of the “Path to 9/11″ and Bill Clinton Stopped it Cold in its tracks. AND They caved! Michael Moore et. al. re-writes history all the time and the “Truth” is on YOUR SIDE?
Mr Blifil, seems to me your the poor baby on the left, that on day one, can’t handle the criticism. Maybe
Regarding “Primary Colors”: both Joe Klein, aka “Anonymous,” and Mike Nichols are supporters of Bill Clinton. I don’t consider either the book or film to be an attack against Bill Clinton. Klein went on to write “The Natural,” and despite the absence of Roy Hobbs, the book celebrates Bill Clinton. There is also plenty of criticism, but Klein doesn’t strike me as anything but a fan, a disappointed fan at times, but a fan nonetheless.
If he’s booted after four years, Hollywood and the media will write it off as a “voter temper tantrum” or something worse, probably along the lines of race. I vividly remember Peter Jennings and his “temper tantrum” comment in regards to the 94 election. In their eyes, Obama will do no wrong and they’ll do whatever it takes to drag him across the finish line. If you thought reporting was bad the last six months, just wait until this gets kicked into gear.
Who got us into the Mortgage mess? Who is really responsible for the current economic crisis facing this country? Yep the lefty Dems. I will say this for you and your ilk, you are cunning as foxes. For years your side got away with forcing the mortgages companies to do their bidding for the sake of political correctness and then turned around and successfully blamed the economic crisis on the Republicans when it inevitably failed. I blame the weak kneed Republicans and John McCain in particular for folding and allowing this lie to go unchallenged. The GOP had better grow a pair and get some brains in the next 4 and stop trying to be “Democrat Light” or we’re in for 4 more years of Obamalama.
When Obama fails it will be the story of a great leader pushing against the evil Republicans that still believe Galileo was wrong and when people are sick you need to let some blood. After all, didn’t Obama say something about science being ‘restored’ to it’s rightful place? All the smart people (and Hollywood only has smart people) know Obama and his ideas are what we need.
When we don’t wake up with our own unicorn in 4 years standing at the bottom of our very own rainbow it will the fault of those dumb Republicans. Obama even put the unicorns and rainbows in the stimulus package to show us how great he is.
Hollywood will make movies like Dave showing us how easy it is to do the right thing if only the president wants to.
When Obama fails, Hollywood, the media and the Democrats will blame Bush.
Hollywood will make movies about how horribly Bush “screwed up” the economy, the War on Terror and our international relations.
The media won’t report the failures unless forced, and when they do will always precede the story with “background” about how the situation was left so messed up by Bush that NO ONE could have been expected to fix it, but it would have gone much, much worse if Obama hadn’t been around to try.
Democrats will deny failure and throw more money at the problem.
Everything is still going to be blamed on “8 years of Bush” unless something good happens. (gas prices)
The Left consistently gives us the presidents they WISH they’d elected (cf. “Dave” and “The West Wing”) rather than facing up to the steaming piles they generally deposit in the Oval Office.
No one has ever explored the Bay of Pigs, or JFK and LBJ blundering into Vietnam. They don’t WANT a “Black Hawk Down”-style exposé of the Iranian hostage crisis and disastrous rescue attempt, or the international fallout afterwards.
Let alone any of the multiple and serial shortcomings of a president best remembered for depositing his DNA on a blue Gap dress.
In short, their only consistent skill is the ability to experience – indeed, call forth on demand – intractable and impenetrable Alzheimers’ regarding the shortcomings of THEIR guys.
Expect nothing new now. They are nothing if nor utterly predictably in total denial.
C’mon now, Obama is The Greatest President in American History — that was already decided two months before he took office — so nothing he does will be seen as a failure. Everything bad is Bush’s fault, even the weather.
What will they do if Obama fails? Easy. Blame Bush. It’s what they’re good at.
I invite all bighollywood readers to educate themselves about Malignant Narcissism or Pathological Narcissism. It will provide you for a framework for dealing with most of the characters we see on this public stage. Sam Valkin’s writings are all over the internet.
If Obama fails, it will cause Narcissistic Injury, which will lead to raging and possible violence, probably against conservatives, Jews and Christians.
Actually, there’s a precedent. JFK blew the Cuban “Bay of Pigs” invasion. Instead of going full on with it or even canceling/delaying it for further study, he went with it but took away US air support. Thereby resulting in a debacle. When the Russians reacted by implacing missiles, Kennedy took the country to the nearest it’s ever been to complete destruction, finally backing out by secretly removing the missiles in southern europe to get the Soviets to remove theirs.
This was a blunder of monumental proportions, but was played as his greatest moment by the fanboy press.
I would expect something similar if/when OHB screws the pooch.
So, Hollywood won’t attack Obama. Big surprise. We need to use the tools of storytelling to tell the truth about this man despite what Hollywood does.
It can be done.

==What Will Hollywood Do If Obama Fails?==
They will make an anti-Bush movie and blame him.
If Obama fails, he’ll still be beloved by Hollywood. Look at Bill Clinton and how he was an adulterer, sexual harasser, and ultimately impeached. It doesn’t matter to Hollywood. It seems the more flawed the more admired a person is in that culture.
Easy.
Oliver Stone will make a movie showing how evil shadowy figures prevented Obama from realizing Hope and effecting Change.
And it will be embraced by many as the gospel truth, not only in America but also the world over.

In egalitarian collaboration with their benevolent comrades elsewhere, Modern Liberal Hollywood will intellectually exercise their “Liberating Tolerance” towards any such critical, theoretical failures.
Regardless, who are we judge what qualifies as an Obama “failure”?
CHRISTINA,
Don’t be ridiculous!
Enlightened Hollywood has — unlike the intolerant radical right neo-cons — a more nurturant and balanced view of the libidinal liberation (a.k.a., “Polymorphous Perversity”) benefits of Clintonian “Eros & Civilization”.

The question is “when” not “if”. Liberal policies always fail.
What a precocious picture. I think they’ll run the former Mayor of Malibu, Martin Sheen.
“Good Enough for West Wing, Good Enough For You!”
They can populate the cabinet with Charlie and Emilio’s kids alone.
Oh, Great Lord Obama…
WHERE IS MY FREE GAS, AND MY MORTGAGE CHECK?
The media won’t allow President Obama to fail. Plain and simple. They will cover up, lie, steal, cheat to do what is necessary for Black Jesus to prevail and bring their version of Fairness, Justice, and Peace upon the lands.
He is the anointed one not the Elected President, he has transcended the mere Highest Office of this land. He is simply The One of the World. Live it, love it or be buried by it and the media.
Obama won’t fail. The MSM, Hollywood, etc., control the narrative. They won’t let him fail. He’s too big to fail.
