Ben Shapiro’s ‘Primetime Propaganda’ Closes the Case on Liberal Hollywood
by Kurt SchlichterThere is a procedure in law called summary judgment where you can win your case without even going to trial because the basic facts are simply undisputed. Ben Shapiro’s new book, Primetime Propaganda: The True Hollywood Story of How the Left Took Over Your TV is one of the best motions for summary judgment I’ve ever read. There can be no dispute over the facts because Ben presents them through the words of the leading lights of Hollywood liberaldom themselves – how he got the interviews he recounts here is simply beyond me (I count over 20 pages of footnotes). But what is clear is that the television industry is liberal-left through and through, and that it pushes its dogma upon its audience while closing ranks to ensure conservatives never get a chance to enter what Ben demonstrates is an insular, incestuous community of like-minded Democrats cocooned away from reality in an echo chamber of Obama-worshipping limo-libhood.
The half-hearted denials of some in the industry are belied by their own actions and their own words – and, surprisingly, by the refreshingly candid admissions of some liberals in television who not only admit its intolerance and stridency but even claim to regret it. Case closed.
Full disclosure – Ben’s a friend and my frequent “Hour of Hate” partner on Larry O’Conner’s legendary Stage Right Show. He’s also the rarest of things – a proud Harvard Law School graduate who is fiercely conservative and who loves television (By the way, Ben’s much-mocked predilection for wearing Harvard Law hats and other apparel makes a hilarious appearance in the book). But Ben’s no snob – he not only freely admits how much he likes television but insists that much of it is well-acted, well-directed and well-produced, its insidious pinko undercurrents notwithstanding. Moreover, Ben is a creature of Hollywood – he has family in the industry, friends in the industry, and he even flirted with entering into it himself, until he ran smack into the seemingly impenetrable wall that is the conservative blacklist.
As Ben documents in exquisite detail, the conservative blacklist operates both directly and indirectly. In some cases, television industry bigwigs simply refuse to hire conservatives because they hate conservatives – the late Bruce Paltrow comes off here as a particularly obnoxious jerk, which goes a long way toward explaining his half-wit daughter Gwyneth. But much of the reason is simply affinity. As Ben documents, the industry has always been a very small community of like-minded individuals who dwell not only within the physical confines of the same LA/NYC world but, equally importantly, share the same world view. If you are not one of them inside the bubble, they will never see you to hire you. Naturally, this leads to the kind of nepotism that explains the rise of overrated no-talents like Gwyneth Paltrow – many of the people who hired her had known her since she was a weird-looking little kid and besides, it couldn’t hurt to do a favor for a guy with the pull of her father Bruce.
Ben shows how this direct and indirect phenomenon also applies to the content of the shows themselves. Some industry players make no bones about it – they seek to directly influence the audience with outright propaganda. What’s interesting is that this is rarely successful – audiences hate being hit over the head with unadulterated lefty agit-prop and quickly turn away when it gets too heavy-handed. A good example is Ellen, an innocuous little comedy series that did okay until the star and her on-screen doppelganger came out and made the show all lesbian, all the time – and not hot lipstick lesbian but whiny, crunchy, let’s-do-macramé-and-other-crafts lesbian. No one wants that.
But the indirect approach is the most effective, and Ben presents an airtight case that much of the liberal normalization promoted by television is the result not of a conscious desire to change the world but simply by a desire to reflect “reality.” Of course, the “reality” of liberal Hollywood types is not the reality of some nuclear family with 2.5 kids and a minivan in a suburb of Kansas City. Hollywood’s “reality” reflects its own freaky, dysfunctional lifestyle; this bizarre anomaly is the image broadcast to America as “normal.” Sadly, too many Americans accept that image and internalize it – a quick examination of statistics on any social pathology is going to show a correlation with the liberal long-march through the television industry that Ben so thoroughly documents.
And document it he does. How did he get these interviews? Don’t these people have minions to Google the guys who want to talk to them? Ben speaks to dozens of Hollywood players, from out conservatives like Big Hollywood contributor Adam Baldwin to hugely successful (and therefore largely liberal) TV executives, writers and producers like Brandon Stoddard, Fred Silverman, Leonard Goldberg, Abby Singer, Larry Gelbart , David Shore, Marcy Carsey, Tom Fontana and Marc Cherry (the Desperate Housewives creator who is a rare Hollywood Republican).
Ben’s not one to just shrug his shoulders and sit there – every time we meet for lunch at a kosher restaurant (Ben takes his faith as well as his politics seriously; he also tolerates my unsuccessful efforts to score a cheeseburger) he is working on about a dozen ideas. Primetime Propaganda not only makes the case but offers solutions. The answer is neither confrontation nor retreat, but engagement. In fact, it’s almost a Gramscian “long march” infiltration strategy.
One more thing – Primetime Propaganda is not only an essential and irrefutable argument about the state of Hollywood and a battle plan for addressing the problem but a great read. Sadly, I had to wait to peruse my advance copy because my Hot Wife kept taking it for herself. Fans of The Stage Right Show are already familiar with how Ben’s mind works faster than his mouth – he has so many ideas he literally cannot talk fast enough to get them all out, though he tries mightily. On paper, Ben’s insights have a chance to come out slowly and in detail, but the same lacerating wit still shines through. There are zingers galore. You get the best of Ben – smart and smartass.
But a thousand-word review cannot capture either the full depth of Ben’s argument or the wealth of interesting facts behind many of our favorite shows, like how The Dick Van Dyke Show broke through racial barriers. He goes through dozens of shows in detail – it’s fascinating and alarming all at once. Best of all, while this is an important book for conservatives who want to know why TV is what it is, reading it is not a painful duty – it’s a pleasure.
Primetime Propaganda presents an open and shut case – the charge is that television is a liberal enterprise that acts directly and indirectly to impose its worldview on its dwindling audience while simultaneously acting to exclude conservative voices and views. And there can be only one verdict after reading this damning indictment: Guilty as charged.

This is why I prefer to read books.
Her mother, Blythe Danner comes across as a self-important elitist.
She strikes me as a female version of Glen Becks Joe Klein impersonation.
So the verdict is guilty.
The sentence is a large drop in ratings, a loss of profit and the loss of your viewers to better material or to other forms of entertainment like books, internet or computer games.
And why I quit watching network TV over 20 years ago…
Hey, an indictment of Bruce Paltrow! Who'd have thunk it?
As a rule, I try to avoid being a hater, but this time I will make an exception: Shapiro's output here at BH is the kind of work that fits perfectly into a liberal's stereotype of what a conservative is. It is so off-putting it dramatically reduced my time at BH. At best, it's misguided due to age, at worst it wanders between the gray areas of ill-informed and absurd. The last time I spent a few minutes with a Shapiro piece, I noted that it appeared he hadn't actually watched a movie he was commenting on (Blue Valentine, as I recall). And let's not forget the exercise in futility that was his overrated director's list. And so on. Good luck with the book sales, but I'll read Mamet's book and get on with my life.
As for GP – she might not have deserved her Oscar and her site might be as pretentious as anything on z'net, but as an actress she's not a no-talent anything. She got her breakthrough with nepotism, sure, in the ultra-low-budget Paul Thomas Anderson film Hard 8. In her twenties, at least, she was gorgeous on screen, something that can't be taught or learned (Great Expectations, Se7en and Emma seemed to be the height of this). I wish GP hadn't married Chris Martin, moved to England and turned publicly into a pretentious jackwagon, but it doesn't change the fact that she's played a lot of good roles in a lot of good movies.
Tori Spelling – that is the ultimate example of nepotism IMO.
It sounds like an excellent book and I hope it educates people. I live in the heart of LA, and I’m depressed enough as it is. I see and live what this book describes every day. I’m afraid if I read it, it will leave me feeling totally hopeless.
Same thing applies. Many many years ago, I started to compile snarking asides and lefty non sequiturs in books, but I soon realized that I couldn't afford to buy so much paper and ink, so I had to stop — ditto movies.
As for TV. In the past we'd let an occasional snark pass, but they became an avalanche, so now a program gets deleted from the DVR at the first sign of a deviation from the center line.
I'm always disappointed with the "stars." I love their acting in TV and film, then they have to go and open their mouths. After that I just cannot watch them in anything. They have, in one fell swoop, turned me off of them forever. Well done!
The thing is, we really should actually feel sorry for them. I know I do. You see, they actually believe that because they are creative and talented, that they are qualified to stand in as politicians. While they may play one on the screen convincingly, this doesn't make them a REAL politician and they just don't get that part!
Further, they are unable to make decisions for themselves. This is evidenced by the 'I believe what they said' attitude they have, and their ability to open their mouths on issues without any fact checking whatsoever. It is my belief that their PR person smacks down a speech for them to say and they just speak with blithe ignorance of any issue thinking to themselves, "Yeah, what (s)he said!"
Their so-called positions on issues work just like the slimy lobbyists in Washington. They get a nice extra paycheck from various groups to publicly side with them. Remember when Lohann was in court that time with the FU fingernails. She was talking about how she was "working" when she was doing something for charity. "Working," she said!!!
Besides the fact is that they don't know how the real world works while they lounge their away in their beautiful mansions, they don't know real friendship either.
In the end, they'll grow old, be unable to get work then become has-beens and no one will remember their position on anything. No one will care.
For all of that I pity them.
Sheesh, when I get old, I'll be unable to get work and no one will remember my position on anything, but the "stars" will no doubt end up with more money than I will have."
Disappointed with the "stars?" They are actors/entertainers and that's what they should be taken for, nothing more. That you're disappointed beyond that says more about yourself than about them.
Bruce Paltrow was an intellectual and political bigot, case closed. He openly discriminated against a great American, Dwight "Howlin' Mad Murdoch" Schultz who documented this painful occurrence on this blog. His dopey no-talent daughter married a talented, but misguided, pretentious Socialist dilettante. They called it "progressive, socially conscious" television (The White Shadow, St. Elsewhere). Yeah right. How 'bout leftist agitprop garbage which will never get my attention in the world of reruns.
Personally I thought it was a great read and that it doesn't fit their caricatured bigot stereotypes at all.
Sounds like a good reason to move to one of the flyover states! Seriously, that move alone may give you some hope for mankind.
I'm shocked to discover artists put their own personal feelings, thoughts and opinions into their works. I was under the impression that the best work came from people dispassionately and mechanically putting out things they didn't care about.
Yes, my experience and reactions exactly. All books used to be grist for my mill. Now, I research the author (usually the dead giveway is right on the back fly cover). I won't even have them on the shelf anymore, so previous purchases that have now been revealed in all of their progressivisms are sent on to the book dealers in the sky.
Yes, a snark here or there was ignored for years with just a crinkle of the brow. Now it is an avalanche, and we have also deleted much formerly watched TV from the DVR. No more Law and Orders. And will not watch the Criminal Minds that thought it "smart" to insert Garafalo as a character. Do they really think we will watch her prance around like a real person when we have seen and read what goes on in her mind?
I thought Dwight Schultz was on the Office, no?
Entertainment first. Selling cars and feminine hygiene products second. Art a distant third.
Largely agree, though you have entertainment and selling things out of order. I also do find your specification of feminine hygiene products oddly specific in a juvenile fashion.
[I'm shocked to discover artists put their own personal feelings, thoughts and opinions into their works.]
LOL!
"Artists….?'
Puh-leeze!
It's a multi-billion dollar *industry*, my friend, and as an industry should have to follow rules on "diversity" and "tolerance" that all of the other industries do. Hiding behind that "artist" moniker is a cheap and transparent way to try to get out of the same crap that the Hollywood Leftists try to foist on everyone else.
i'm sorry GOC it's hard to read what you say when you have boxxy as an avatar.
you bests not be trollin'
Where do you see fear? The only point made in the review which I assume is a part of the theme in the book is the preponderance of bias or overwhelming one-sided effort in TV land. Perhaps you are the one who is sensitive if that offends or disturbs you. Fear would lead to silly things like a boycott. Boycotts like Democrats.com is leading against advertisers on Fox News. Talk about fearing different ideas!
People said that of William F. Buckley.
Not that Shapiro is akin to Buckley, but you know what I mean.
It sounds like you missed most of the person's comments. That's not quite what Mag-South said.
"Lighten up, Francis."
It is a product, is what WP is saying. Cars and stuff.
So, to be clear, your big divide with Shapiro is over the opinion of who is or isn't a good actor/actress? Really?
Sure, nepotism is everywhere money and power exist. I mean, look at politics. But the fundamental points here relate more to bias and progressive agendas than who is or isn't a good actor/actress. But from your words, I'll infer that you are content with a personal smear versus any meaningful counterargument against Shapiro simply because you have an affinity for Gwyneth Paltrow.
Seems petty more than thoughtful. Just my OPINION.
Well as usual, the only thing one picks up on by reading an article by Kurt Schlicter is that Kurt Schlicter is a giant, gaping, smelly, a**hole. The rest is just his faux-macho, regressive, emotionally retarded and arrogant Reaganite twaddle. And his analysis of films like Heat and the Matrix are pathetic and half baked.
And how about this little nugget?
"A good example is Ellen, an innocuous little comedy series that did okay until the star and her on-screen doppelganger came out and made the show all lesbian, all the time – and not hot lipstick lesbian but whiny, crunchy, let’s-do-macramé-and-other-crafts lesbian."
What a sexist, homphobic, a**shole. In other words the perfect right wing, reaganite, turd and supporter.
Shapiro is simply insufferable and no longer worth mentioning.
And this idea that liberals have unorthodox family styles is stupid and absurd. It's obvious this bonehead either has never been to the northeast or simply likes to lie a lot. Probably the latter. Because if you've ever been to blue state NY or NJ there are millions of democrat voters with stable nuclear families.
Preordered Ben's new book on my Kindle over the weekend. Can't wait to start reading tonight!
Is there a chapter on Rowsdower? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJd3g6LGSFc
It's just all part of the Right Wing talking points. Liberals are anti-God, anti-American, anti-family, baby killing, Granny killing (but apparently not Grandpa killing) anti-Semitic, gun-hating, Constitution hating, Fascist, Communist, Marxist, Socialist, Muslim loving, lying lazy parasites who want to destroy this country and steal all the money from the God loving hard working REAL Americans.
Did I miss anything?
As people in our young 20s, my wife and I watched the Ellen show regularly. It wasn't great, but there wasn't anything else worth watching during that time slot. And it was a decent show until she came out. Why? Because the purpose of the show changed, and everything else that defined the quality of the show up to that point in time went out the window. The characters were no longer important, the the preaching was.
So you're for more government regulations of industry, then?
Nope. Looks like you hit the main points.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head as to the definition of liberals. Makes me wonder why you just don't move to Cuba, or Iran, or N. Korea, or anywhere but here.
You forget to point-out that most progressives/liberals are faux-educated putz's.
Reflect much?
That would be "forgot to"….oh, well-educated one.
It really is rather easily understood and is even just as simple to explain. It's called "leveling the playing field." If oil rigs require so much regulation, then so should the Hollywood industry.
Apparently you had trouble understanding my comment above just as you have understanding ShapBlade's here. If I need to bring a down to an even lower level to explain it to you, I'll be happy to oblige. Just let me know.
That's why I read Tom Clancy. One of his best quotes was in no book at all, but on TV just after 9/11. I can't remember the quote exactly but he said something like the difference between conservatives and liberals is that conservatives will do something about it like build bridges but liberals will just build a memorial.
Man I wish I could remember how it went.
Edit: Woohoo I found it! It was when Tom Clancy was on the O'Reilly Factor a little over a week after 9/11.
He said, "The political left, they deal in symbols rather than reality. The general difference between conservatives and liberals is that liberals like pretty pictures and conservatives like to build bridges that people can drive across. And conservatives are indeed conservative because if the bridge falls down then people die, whereas the liberals figure, we can always build a nice memorial and make people forget it ever happened and was our fault. They're very good at making people forget it was their fault."
I know in my heart that if I weren't a conservative, I would be the biggest star of stars. But the casting agents, producers, directors, actors, camera and art departments, all are against me because I'm conservative. They are depriving America of my great talent. It's not fair. No no no no no no no. Boo hoo.
If I had a dollar for every disagreement I had with someone who challenged the now proven theory Ben puts forth in this book…
How did he get those interviews? Aside from being the Westside Jew who attended Harvard – way too easy – the arrogance of Hollywood and the Progressives is now ALMOST post-parabolic.
Their arrogance won't ever dissipate. The outwardness of it will. Now that's kosher.
I get the game here, but the final analysis is that you want MORE government regulation. And "leveling the playing field????" Sounds very socialistic to me. You ARE a socialist just a little bit, aren't ya. Admit it?
No, actually, I'm not. Leveling the playing field is by far, no admission.
Nice try though.
I'm for these people to stop getting all these crooked tax credits from the government. Sever the enterainment industry's financial ties and dirty dealings with the Cali state government, you'll see a lot of this crap go away.
on my list to read !
I hear Dwight Schultz covering for savage and he is great one of my new favorites, loved him on TNG
It's too bad because both Danner (in her day) and Gweneth are quite nice to look at. Oh well….can't win 'em all!
I can't wait to read this book. Seems to be causing quite a stir already!
I agree with you about Gweneth Paltrow, but also a lot of what Shapiro has written. But much of that is merely artistic taste. We've all go it. I will say I did not agree with most of his 'overrated' lists, but there were a few that struck chords with me (I happen to think Terrence Malick and Sam Mendes' collective works are grating as hell….I would have included those guys knowing that it would piss a lot of people off).
Remember too, writers are there to help make us think, to provoke thought, and therefore be provocative.
But listen, you're entitled to your opinion, and if you can't stand what the guy has to say, then that's valid, provocative or not.
I could say the same thing to you, puppet.
1) Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but when you're starting out, it's a good idea to keep them to yourself.
2) It may not be a meritocracy, but the fact is that Hollywood is not a Blue State or a Red State, it's a Green State. Convince them that you can help make them money, and they'll hire you. Make it clear that you'll be a distracting pain in their ass, and they won't.
3) The last thing people want to hear from you is why you're so smart they'll be working for you someday. So rubbing their noses in your Harvard Law degree might not be the brightest move you could make.
BigBart – ESL – Speaking in present tense, as I was, I'm correct. However you are probably still in 8th grade or perhaps a grad student at Columbia. Oh well…
Why don't we just agree that the reason there are more liberals than conservatives in the entertainment industry is because in general, the liberal mind is much more creative than the conservative mind. They're funnier, they sing songs that tell people things they want to hear like how great they are, and they make movies with lots of TnA and raunchy good fun.
This is why I always say liberals are good for one thing: Entertainment. And most of the time, they aren't very good at that.
But this stuff reeks of the worst kind of paranoia. There are plenty of conservative dollars working in Hollywood. They have power, and they have ability. If they're so concerned about being Blacklisted or Discriminated against, they can create their own entertainment. Hell, any kid can become a You-tube sensation in an instant. You're telling me that conservatives can't break through the Hollywood wall? Then build your own Fn wall if that's what you want. If you hold your conservative ideals to such a high standard, you wouldn't want to work with these officious boneheads anyway.
Well. Would you?
Yeah! ME TOO. WAUGGGGHHHH!
Actually, I'm a senior at Oral Roberts University and there's something I still haven't figured out yet. When you hear God speaking to you, does he communicate in YOUR voice, Charleton Heston's voice, Morgan Freeman's, George Burns, or what? How will I know it's really him and not my own hallucinations?
I don't quite get your point…? Since you asked, God speaks to me through the wonders he performs each day in my life and the lives of others.
As a fiscally conservative, socially moderate, libertarianesque person, I cringed at the Ellen remark, as well. However, I do remember being a fan of the sitcom when it was on the air, interested about her and her character having the guts to come out, then absolutely disinterested in the sitcom because it *absolutely did* become a show about a lesbian. As a hetero, I found nothing interesting in the show anymore and nothing in common with the character so I stopped watching, though I still thought Ellen (the person) was brave to come out as she did.
Out gays and lesbians are so common these days, we forget what a pioneer Ellen was at the time, not only for actors but for everyday people, too. However, for example, her talkshow today is so popular because she is just Ellen and *not*, aside from a joke about her sexuality here and there, about her being a lesbian.
Nail on the head with the arrogance.
They think that their intolerance is ok because they think so highly of themselves that they can't comprehend that anyone, anyone worth anything, would think differently than they. Coupled with their coccooning themselves in their groupthink mini universe…could there be anything other than a blacklist for conservatives?
No, I mean how do you know it's him? He speaks to one and tells one to do something. How does said person know it's really God?
Actual True quotes from Bachman:
'And from there, my husband said "Now you need to go and get post-doctorate degree in tax law." Tax law? I hate taxes. Why should I go and do something like that? But the Lord says: Be submissive, wives, you are to be submissive to your husbands.
And so we moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and I went to William and Mary, to law school there, for a post-doctorate degree in tax law, and I pursued this course of study. Never had a tax course in my background, never had a desire for it, but by faith, I was gonna be faithful to what God was calling me to do through my husband, and I finished that course of that study.'
And now God is calling her to run for President.
And He's calling me to vote for her . . .
To someone like me, a conservative who wrote screenplays for ten years, the blacklist is undeniable. But when I read some of the comments posted here, I can only shake my head ruefully.
Unfortunately, I fear that the people who most need to read this book won't.
There you go. How do you know it's not Lucifer talking to you?
Lucifer and I are not on speaking terms these days. Besides, Lucifer votes a straight Democrat ticket anymore. He's been doing it for years.
As former long-time theater actress and aspiring film/tv actress who is also conservative… and black, Shapiro's book both frightens and inspires me.
OMG! That totally undercuts his argument! It absolutely supports *your* argument!
