Bush had “people banished to a free speech gulags”
by Kathryn Jean LopezA lot of you here in Big Hollywood live in the real Hollywood so maybe you have a map to this alternative reality Steven Weber lives in? As I saw the last eight years, whether it was at a convention, in Crawford, on the Mall, or even in Iraq, there were always people speaking freely and often crassly (or with shoes) about the president. And right until the end — George W. Bush was shamefully mocked this morning at the Capitol. Perhaps his Wings allow Weber to travel to Stalin’s Russia or Hitler’s Germany, or, contemporarily, Chinese Laogais. Otherwise, his reality is a mystery to me.

Can’t K-Lo be sentenced to The Corner? I thought that Big Hollywood represented something fresh and unorthodox.
Come on Kathryn, you know the liberals don’t have to prove that something happens/ed… they just have to say it did/does.. and VOILA, Ipso facto (or whatever the actual phrase is), it did!
Funny you should post this, Kathryn. I was trying to get into the spirit and went over to Huffpost to see what happiness was like today. Weber’s headline caught my eye, I opened it….and that’s the last time I’ll visit that much hate for another few weeks or so. Talk about the clustering of like minds developing extremism.
I know what alternative reality he’s in: The one where Islamic terrorists didn’t fly 2 planes into the WTC; where Saddam Hussein is still alive, sharing all of the petrodollars that Iraq is earning on the open market with his people, preparing for free and open elections; where Usama bin Ladin is managing the construction sites for his family’s business; where the Democrat Party didn’t crash the US Economy through mismanagement of GSEs and forcing banks to loan to borrowers who were obviously unable to prove income, job or assets; and where Air America has a 20 share every day, in all parts.
Oh, so “Free Speech Zones” don’t exist?

Yeah, three building with two planes. Was that some sort of fancy carom shot or was there more to the story?
Steven Weber – Yet another has-been who never quite was who has to say something anti-Bush to get noticed. Pathetic.
We interrupt this post for an important message from Steven Weber -
“Me am Steven Weber! Me am smart and talk good English! You peephole knot make phun ov wot I wright else I boar you more with idoit statemints bout X-preseedint Gorge Bush! I show you then! Sew there!”
Thank you, Mr. Weber – Ladies and Gentlemen, that was Steven (does anyone even care who I was) Weber, boy genius and one of the great minds of the 20th Century.
@Terry – Like the cages at the Dem conventions?
Critical Matt –
What I’m trying desperately to do is get people to wake up. The point is valid about free speech. The blame placed on Bush doesn’t mean it isn’t also to be placed on the same people who chose Obama for us. There is no real difference between these two – they are hand-chosen by the same select few elites running the show. You will get more of the same with Obama – probably far worse considering the undeserved adulation this guy is getting.
Oh Steven, I’m so disappointed. Did Lowell help you write that? No, it couldn’t be Lowell. There was no mention of cousin Beevo. Maybe it was Roy. No, wait. Roy is too busy looking for Lowell in the hangar. Perhaps it was Helen. Nah, can’t be here. She seems like a Republican, to me. I think it was Monk. Yeah, it was the foreigner. They all hate Bush, just like Hollywood.
[...] Free Speech Guglags? Well, Hollywood; what don’t they [...]
Steven Weber, last seen dating someone young enough to be his daughter on Desperate Housewives. Of course, what so bizarre about that on that show (or in Hollywood).
Oh, that’s right, I watch Desperate Housewives.
I loved the prequel movies (see user name). They might have been looking at the wrong doorway, but I think the principles are accurate (see today’s events).
Quote Terry: “What I’m trying desperately to do is get people to wake up. The point is valid about free speech. The blame placed on Bush doesn’t mean it isn’t also to be placed on the same people who chose Obama for us.”
Terry, so you voted for McCain then?
Steven Weber? The gay guy that played the hetero womanizing younger brother on some schlocky sit-com? THAT GUY?! Kinda the reverse Eric McCormack? I can see how the role musta been a stretch for him. Yeah, seen in that context, the HuffPo and his snarky whine are a perfect fit. You GO, Girl!
I am going to have to check the dictionary on the definition of “censorship”. Maybe it’s changed. Maybe it now means being able to say anything one wants at any time and any place without interference from the government. Frankly, I would have giving my life savings if the left would have just shut up for an hour about Bush!
See, this is one of those moments where I think that cream pies in the face should be legal and free from criminal or civil prosecution. Weber just deserves a cream pie in the face…
Hey, props on inviting the lamest member of NRO to Big Hollywood. K-Slow is why The Corner needs an “Ignore” feature. Now, regrettably, so does Big Hollywood.
I’ve never heard of Steven Webber.
I think he’s
speakingsnortingtruthwhiteto power.powder.Kathryn and Jude (I still don’t know who the hell “Jude” is!):
Step aside, please. The grown-ups are in charge now.
Tim Robbins did tell Steven Weber that there was a Chill Wind® for all of those pure Hollywood souls who believe in anything that is just and right. Robbins even wrote an off-off-off-off Broadway play on this persecution.
A hearty second and full support to Paul’s statement – if there is one example of the Bush Admin stifling, legally, any dissent – bring it forward! Code Stink, the Kossacks, Herr Olbermann, the NYT, NOW, every Hollyweirdian from Rosie O’Hypocrite to the equally deplorable Roseanne Barr, Sarandon, Penn, Clooney, the “ladies” of The Spew, et al, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
They’ve all had their shots and as far as I can tell, none of them have been dragged of their hallucinatory “Gulag.”
They’ve all fully and muscularly exercised their full rights under the free speech protections of the 1st Amendment without persecution or prosecution.
Indeed, it will be more than interesting to see how the power Triumvir of Obama/Pelosi/Reid reacts to the dissent their Socialist/Communist/Progressive/Liberal (or whatever alias they’re now using) policies and Executive Orders will undoubtedly engender.
Sojourner – I would be interested to see the arrest reports on the alleged bunper sticker arrests.
Ditto with the alleged NY protesters “who happened to be walking in the area”. In the area of the broken windows and looted business? Those “walking around” people?
The “Fox News and MSM” allegations are hardly crimes – they have every right to challenge other opinions and consider them as “traitorous” and un-American.” Obviously, the only thing a Liberal/Progressive can’t tolerate is an opposing opinion.
FISA violations? Not according to the courts that decided them and found them having no merit.
Show me proof of a gag order on any “international” organizations. Does the word “international” have no meaning to you? It certainly doesn’t apply to American law – how could a gag order be placed on an organization outside the jurisdiction of American law?
The shoe thrower was an Iraqi – Iraqis will deal with him – not the Bush Admin.
As much as a it may be a shock to you, the Clinton Admin instituted rendentions because they didn’t posess the balls to place their battlefield captives, terrorists, in front of the American public as the Bush Admin did (for all the world to see) at Guantanamo.
YES, Sojourner – I need more. More sanity. More critical thinking. But, I need less Bush Derangement Syndrome and more appreciation for the fact the in the last eight years, ain’t none of you worthless traitors been blowed up by terrorists and STILL have the right to bitch about it!
Sourjourner, because apparently you’re the last person in the world not to know this, you may want to read this article about the Plame leak (note the author is not Karl Rove or George Bush or Dick Cheney):

Armitage’s Leak
By Robert D. Novak
Thursday, September 14, 2006; Page A21
When Richard Armitage finally acknowledged last week that he was my source three years ago in revealing Valerie Plame Wilson as a CIA employee, the former deputy secretary of state’s interviews obscured what he really did. I want to set the record straight based on firsthand knowledge.

Terry, if you consider wikipedia a reliable source of information, you are beyond hope.
You Do realize that any kook with a computer can add to wikis right?
I suppose you get your “News” from comedy central too huh?
Liberals are just Too Funny!
There’s a pretty funny musician’s joke :
How do you get a guitar player to turn down?
You put music in front of him.
Change guitar player to troll.
Change music to facts.
Am I to realize, only now, that “Big Hollywood” is just another big named cenosred site? As if “Big Hollywood” is any different from any of the other Hollywood sites? Can we call it “Big Santa Monica.com?”
Nonsense, Sojourner! First of all, Plame’s “identity” wasn’t classified in the first place. Secondly, Cheney said no such thing. Richard Armitage was the source of the leak to Novak that started all this and HE was certainly no friend of the Bush Administration. In fact, he opposed almost everything the Bush administration did. He was just another Clinton retread that Bush failed to get rid of when he took office…to his everlasting regret, I’ll bet.
“Free speech,” like every other enumerated right contained in the Constitution, is NOT an unfettered right. You may not commit slander or libel, for example, without severe and serious consequences, and you can’t defend slander and libel by pleading your “free speech” rights. It SHOULD be illegal for someone to disrupt a speaker by shouting obscenities and rushing the podium as liberals are prone to do any time a speaker that they even THINK disagrees with leftist dogma is preparing to speak. It’s not, but such idiots are routinely ejected from the venue when the hosts of the speaker insist on hearing what he has to say. Too often, colleges and universities look fondly on such disruptions and do nothing. Bug-witted idiots are even prone to throw pies (or bricks) at conservatives on campus because they know they’ll get away with it. Where again are these “gulags?”
Don S: Good question. BTW: How come very few of the Big Hollywood twits on this site are on TV at all?
Sojourner – Some anonymous “spokesman” from the CIA has made the assertion that her job was “classified.” That doesn’t make it so. I’ve read the law. What she was doing was fairly low-level intelligence analysis. Those within the CIA who have jobs, the revealing of which constitute a criminal offense, are FIELD agents and under cover (or those who WERE undercover field agents within the previous 5 years). Ms Plame was neither. She wasn’t a field agent and she had NOT been for over 6 years, in point of fact. Therefore, the “leaking” of her name as working for the CIA was NOT a criminal offense to begin with. Secondly, it wasn’t Scooter Libby who “leaked” her name in the first place. It was Richard Armitage and the “special prosecutor” admitted that he’d known that almost from the first week of his “investigation,” but he thought he saw a way to “get” someone high up in the Bush administration and continued his “investigation”…even though he knew who the “guilty” party was before he’d even SPOKEN to Libby. It was purely political and as phony as “I did NOT have sexual relations with that woman….Miss Lewinsky.”
Only a complete bugwit would assert that it should be “legal” to shout down a speaker that hundreds of people had come to hear. What about the right of the other people in the venue who want to hear what he or she has to say? Do YOUR right to disrupt and shout down a speaker trump their’s? I don’t think so. You may have the right to free speech–to a degree, but you do NOT have the right to deny others their right to free speech, too. While you have the right of free speech, there is no law that says you have to be given a VENUE to speak, nor is there a law that says you have the right to be heard. If you don’t like what a speaker is saying, plug your ears or leave and go somewhere you can’t hear. Our campuses, which SHOULD be places where all points of view should be heard and considered, have become places of supreme INtolerance of anything that disagrees with leftist dogma. Professors who deign to teach from a conservative perspective are shunned by other faculty, harassed unmercifully, denied tenure and essentially run out of academia. Student organizations that are conservative in nature are denied meeting places by university administrations, denied certification and even cut out of access to student funds…merely because they are conservative in nature. One NEVER hears of anything similar happening to leftist student organizations, teachers or guests, or, if one does, it’s the exception that proves the rule–such as that idiot in Colorado who lied about his own ethnicity to achieve his position and tenure and then used it to indoctinate students with the most vile, hate-filled crap until even the leftie administration had had enough and ran him off. “Little Eichman’s” my ass!
Why is it that those of Mr. Weber’s faction are so keen to shout “censorship” and throw around terms like “gulag” and “fascist”, but have so little to say about *actual* repressive regimes in the world?
I attended art school through much of President Bush’s second term, and there was an astonishing hate-driven industry of political artwork produced by the students there, all directed against the Bush Administration. There was even a poster hung up in a window urging the freeing of Saddam Hussein during his trial. Yet, amazingly, no one was arrested or shaken down by cops or federal agents; no one’s home was invaded by jackbooted thugs; no one was ushered off to a re-education camp; no one was beaten in the street; no one’s family was threatened… It was almost as though the students were exercising their freedom of speech without government reprisal.
Honestly, has anyone remained silent over the last eight years? Because *somebody* sure was making a lot of noise. If it wasn’t the American Left, I’m really curious as to whom it was.
