So, Now You Tell Us?!
by John ZieglerI have always been fascinated and frustrated by the phenomenon in our public dialogue that when we get new information after a “debate” is deemed to be over, that the original dispute is never “reopened.”
For instance, when Barack Obama threw Rev. Jeremiah Wright “under the bus” a month after he was praised lustily by the media for not having done so in his famous “race” speech, the history of that event was never rewritten. Similarly, the dramatic positive impact of the surge in Iraq never came close to altering the media’s premature conclusion that the war there was a “disaster,” and the most recent data on the global temperature drop has done next to nothing to change the notion that the debate of global warming is “over.”
In the past week we have seen two classic examples of this quirk in the unwritten rules of media history.
The Obama/Oprah led flameout for Chicago’s hopes to host the 2016 Olympics certainly fits in this category. Much has already been said about the disastrous nature of this development from the economic and political perspectives. However, not nearly enough has been stated about how this event seems to prove that one of the basic foundations of the argument for Obama’s election was a complete lie.
It was just over a year ago when Obama choose to go to Europe for his grandiose victory lap for having won the Democratic nomination. Hundreds of thousands (allegedly) of enlightened ones flocked to the streets to see and hear the new Messiah promise to bring the now hated United States of George Bush back into the good graces of the “civilized” world.
The message was clear. We elect Obama and the rest of the world will instantly love us again (as if they ever really loved us to begin with). The media hammered this point until even the people who literally couldn’t find Europe on a map (you know, the ones that actually decide elections in this country) understood how vitally important this was.
Well, based on what happened in Copenhagen, how in the world can anyone conclude anything other than that whole concept was just simply made up?
Never before in modern history had a U.S. President needlessly put so much prestige on the line in front of the world community and been so roundly rejected. The fact that Chicago didn’t even get out of the first round eliminates any real ambiguity about what was really happening here and exposed the theory that Obama’s election did anything to elevate our country in the eyes of the world as being completely bogus (keep in mind that all it took for golf to get in 2016 Olympics after a century long absence was for Tiger Woods to appear in front of the IOC via videotape; once again proving that Obama is no Tiger).
And yet, very little has been said that even questions whether we were lied to about this audacious promise. Instead, some have laughably tried to blame the Bush hangover for the embarrassment even though Chicago somehow made it successfully to the final stage while the evil one was still President.
This episode is reminiscent of the Cambridge police flap where Obama’s words and action totally destroyed the obviously phony narrative that our new President was a different kind of black leader and was going to be “post-racial.” The evidence could not be more overwhelming that we were lied to about this as well, and yet (due mostly to rampant media malpractice and conservative wimpiness) in the consciousness of the average American, that slam dunk case is still largely unproven
The other incident which followed this same pattern involved the revelation that David Letterman has apparently had numerous affairs with members of his staff.
This one is particularly personal for me because I somehow found myself at the forefront of the Fire David Letterman “movement” after his inappropriate “jokes” about Sarah Palin and her daughter. At the time, it seemed pretty clear to me that Letterman had “issues” and that the basis of his obsession with Palin and her family was obviously sexual. After all, Letterman had continuously referenced Palin’s attractiveness in a creepy sort of way and had even invited her on his show while urging her husband Todd to stay home.
But when I went on Fox News Channel to discuss this issue and referenced my theory, I was almost mocked by anchorwoman Megyn Kelly.
Now, based on these most recent disclosures, how can you conclude anything other than I was probably right? Heck, even Letterman himself seemed to back up this conclusion when he seemingly bizarrely (though in the context of my supposition perfectly understandable) “apologized” to Sarah Palin in the middle of begging for understanding from his fans and wife for his indiscretions.
This is on top of the numerous previous statements and “jokes” that Letterman had made about Palin just before and after his original “apology” was so eagerly accepted by the news media which cast great doubt about the sincerity of his efforts to make amends.
But has there ever been any reevaluation of what was really going on in the Letterman/Palin flap which, at the time, actually was outrageously a net gain for Dave? No. Instead much of the media focus has been on how Letterman is a “victim” of an extortion attempt as well as how strongly his fans appear to be backing him on this.
I realize that what is about to happen or what may occur in the future is far more exciting and ratings friendly than what has already occurred in even our very recent past, but are our collective attention spans and memories really all so short that we can’t at least correct the record on these significant incidents?
Our side needs to understand the incredible importance of the narrative and when the facts allow us to win these skirmishes (even after they have seemingly been previously lost), we need to take advantage of that. Fortunately, based on recent history we will get plenty of similar opportunities in the future.

On the subject of Letterman I gave up watching him years ago. He is no longer funny. He is just an angry older man with many personal issues that bleed over into his broadcasts. John, once again you got it right on! I was waiting to see when you were going to weigh on on this and it's good to see that you make a reasoned and well supported argument. When it comes to the MSM I always remember the scene in the original Star Wars when Luke and Obi Wan Kenobi ride into to town and are stopped by the stormtroopers and Kenobi lays the "these aren't the droids you're looking for" line on them. It's the Jedi mind trick day after day.

What happened to all of the 'outraged' feminists and other liberals, who denounce employer's who have (and even demand) sexual relations with subordinates? Letterman turned out to be one of these jerks, yet it's a wink and a nod. If a division manager of a large corporation did this, he'd be out on his butt, and a slew of sexual harrassment lawsuits would be filed against the manager and the company. It goes to show you that liberal hypocrisy has no boundaries.
Even when Letterman was considered cutting edge comedy, I though he was a vicious man. Am glad to see that that what goes around, comes around.

Letterman was certainly extorted (what a moroon was that 48 hours producer). And he is certainly a serial slut using power to get women (I thought he was already married, oh well). If I owned CBS, he would be fired this time and there's undoubtedly something in his contract to allow that to happen.

Speaking of the Reverend Wright, I think he is getting the biggest kick out of all of this. As our President is
being exposed more and more as an empty suit, a hollow man, I picture Wright and his sly, knowing smile.
The man who was a member of his parish for twenty years was a known quantity to Rev. Wright. The reverend
helped build him up, took Obama as far as he could, and watched as the American people bought into this

What people fail to realize is that morality doesn't come into play when it comes to people like Letterman and Jon Stewart and Bill Maher. They can (and often have) behave like complete scumbags and they get away with it because the MSM refuses to hold them accountable. Groups like NOW remain silent until a conservative acts inappropriately.
We're playing on an uneven field and it'll stay that way until everyone is held accountable by the same rules. Just look at Polanski. The guy is a child rapist and the silence form victims groups and Hollywood is deafening.

My take is when the jaws of life are removed and the glass is swept away from the Ed Sullivan Theatre so will go Letterman's ratings. I would venture to say at least a half dozen New York attorneys are conferring with ex employee clients before the plethura of complaints begin. I could be wrong but I know attorneys and I know disgruntled employees especially ones that were and no longer close to the power. Any way one wants to slice it Letterman’s journey down this road has just begun.
It really only sucks for someone who cares about who he is with, and I highly doubt Letterman is such a man.

When people like Letterman, Olbermann and Matthews were young, they no doubt believed that all the hot chicks were on the left. Thirty years down the line, they've found the hot chicks on the left have aged, and the new hot ones on the left are almost inevitably air-headed celebrities in the Jessica Alba mode, while the ones who venture more into the actual political field tend to be far less pleasing to the eye.
It's why they get irked at all the hot Fox News babes, let alone other pundits like Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter and Laura Inghram, and a large part of the reason why Palin drives them crazy. Conservatives seem to have the hotter female spokespeople nowadays that you can actually carry on a conversation with, and that's not the deal they bought into back in the 1970s (it's also why there was so much bile vented at Carrie Prejean earlier this year — not that it's hard to do the usual "beauty queens are dumb" thing, but they left also wanted to make her dumb-and-evil, which required them to also portray Perez Hilton as the shining beacon of truth and virtue. No amount of media spin on this or any other planet is going to get that done).

I was an NYU student with two friends that worked on Letterman's show back in the 1990's. Even back then he was known as 'Mr. Hands' to some of the staff and interns because he would inadvertently touch some of the women a little…'too much' on the shoulder, back or hands. To say that the writing staff and production staff felt 'comfortable' is ridiculous. That show has been a toxic atmosphere for years. Women that slept with Dave got more 'on air' time than those that did not and plum writing assignments were given to his 'favorites'. The only reason there aren't law suits against him is because the entertainment industry, as everyone knows is all about reputation and power and those who complain get black-balled. Dave is a slime. Frankly, I hope a group of former employees come out and sue his 'worldwide' pants off. It's about time some of the widely accepted protections that exist in other parts of corporate america against sexual harrassment were to apply to the entertainment business where it is SORELY needed.

When the planet cools instead of warms, when the ice builds instead of melting, when polar bears thrive instead of dying off, and when Mars heats up at the same time as the Earth – these are called inconvenient facts and are most often ignored by those who claim the issue is resolved. The debate isn't over and issue isn't resolved, only them being in positions of power and able to take steps to impose their cap and tax makes the issue "resolved." The issue will remain "resolved" until 2010 and 2012 when the voters again demonstrate they aren't stupid and are now awake. It will take time to undo the damage.

What we are seeing is a desperate attempt of the once very funny David Letterman to get ratings … at almost any cost. So he had sex with consenting women in his staff, while he was living with a "main squeeze", later his wife. By Golly, how u n u s u a l! The applause in the room, upon his confession, indicated, that the attendees of his shows are not very spoiled anymore, when it comes to the entertaining value of the event. And I don't want to limit that observation to the CBS David Letterman productions. Qualities are going down almost everywhere, it seems. Plus, do we really need Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, all trying to outdo themselves and each other in being funny, every night?
I would love to see an episode of "Nightline", with Ted Koppel, again. Maybe someone should try to introduce unusual guest hosts . . . famous entertainers, media personalities, book authors, astronauts, doctors, even journalists and politicians (once in a while). Having to see exactly the same guys each night on the same channels is torture, in my eyes. Someone surprising, something uplifting, informative, though-provoking. Maybe even John Ziegler. Once in a while.

Well, the phenomenon you mention is due to cognitive dissonance. Once a person has espoused an opinion, they have a natural resistance to changing that opinion, especially publicly, because it would force them to cope with two contradictory cognitions: the realization "I was wrong about Obama" with the deeply-held belief "I am a smart person". In other words if you spent all of 2008 praising Obama to your friends and neighbors, it's hard for you to come to terms with the fact that Obama's an idiot, because it means that you yourself might have been one.
Two implications of this are (a) people who don't express strong opinions find it much easier to change their minds, and (b) first impressions of a story are easy to shape and quite resistant to being re-shaped.

Considering the invitation was made after Letterman had joked about Willow Palin being raped at a Yankees game, I think Letterman meant Todd should stay home in the interest of Letterman's own personal safety.
