Mainstream Media: The Devil Wears Pravda
by John T. SimpsonFrom the riots and chaos of the 1960s to the anti-war rallies of the Bush years, the American Left’s revolution has been widely televised. In fact, the Big Three and Dead Tree Press played a major part in that revolution. From negative field reporting during the Vietnam War to negative reporting on McCain/Palin and the beatification and election of Barack Obama, the MSM has been marching in lockstep and waving the banner for the American Left all the way. RatherGate, anyone? Doesn’t get much more lockstep than a reporter trying to subvert a presidential election to the Left’s advantage.
But there’s another revolution underway in America today, and you sure as hell won’t see it televised or reported on by our new fourth branch of government. It’s not in their interest to do so. Nothing new there. For a long time now, political corruption has been rampant in the Leftist ‘mainstream’ media. In 1998, Matt Drudge made his big mark breaking the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which Newsweek had buried to protect President Clinton. Think Obama’s Tiger Beat would have done that for Bush?
It has only gone way downhill since into Soviet-era Pravda territory. The MSM’s modus operandi today is identical, and I don’t say that lightly. But having listened to Radio Moscow broadcasts on ham radio for years during the Cold War era, combined with some Naval Intelligence training and research into the subject, I deconstructed the Soviets’ propaganda MO down to five simple canons. All five are in direct violation of every principle of objective and unbiased journalism there is:
1. Always make the State and its political leadership appear infallible.
2. Promote the State’s ideology and official policies wherever possible.
2. Demonize political adversaries and dissidents as enemies of the State.
4. Suppress news that reflects poorly on the State or its leadership.
5. If bad news cannot be suppressed, attack and discredit the source.
Those canons apply to any totalitarian dictatorship’s propaganda machinery, really. Just ask the Green protesters in Iran. I referenced the Soviet-era Pravda because I know it all too well. Example. All five canons were applied in the days following the KAL 007 shootdown by Russian fighter jets on September 1, 1983. There was nothing from Radio Moscow for days, then a terse statement of how Russian fighters encountered KAL 007 before it “continued on to the Sea of Japan.” That’s verbatim.
Finally, when the big news and damning facts could no longer be suppressed, Radio Moscow went on an all-out offensive, blaming the Americans for their own rash action in shooting down a commercial airliner and killing all 269 passengers and crew. They even insinuated that the flight number, 007, proved that it was on a spy mission. Don’t expect reason or sanity from propagandists.
Now, take a look at those five canons again and compare the MSM’s response to the Van Jones, Yosi Sergant/NEA and ACORN video sting scandals, all stop-the-presses headline stories. Van Jones, a presidential ‘czar’ whom we discover is a radical racist, self-avowed Communist and 9/11 Truther. Yosi Sergant, communications director at the NEA, an independent federal agency, politicizing NEA by coordinating with the White House and artists nationwide to create art promoting Obama’s political agenda, a direct violation of NEA’s charter. And all with our taxpayer dollars.
Last but not least, six ACORN workers in three different field offices, all most willing to perpetrate housing and tax fraud to facilitate the establishment of brothels with illegal alien child sex rings, and all on our dime. Makes you wonder who they’ve placed already. I can just picture Pinchy doing a Dr. Evil-like “Ssssh!” on that last musing at a Times editorial board meeting. Given the Paper of Broken Records’ non-coverage of Van Jones and Yosi Sergant, I’d say Pinchy has a whole bag of “Ssssh!”
The Pulitzer Committee should add a new award category for Best Non-Coverage of a Major News Story. It would be an Oscar-like Battle for the Gold the first year out. It’s tragic to bear witness to, having been weaned on great American investigative journalism that seems almost nonexistent in the MSM these days. Very sad state of affairs, but We The People need to know who and what we’re dealing with here. This now-endemic political corruption in the MSM goes way beyond just reporting or not reporting the news. It violates the sacred public trust We The People have put in our media watchdogs to investigate and report the truth on our behalf so we can make informed decisions.
That political corruption also introduces severe conflicts of interest when ideology trumps major front page news stories, which has happened far too often lately. Our government should be fearful of a free press, not worshiped by it. That’s more apropos for North Korea, not America. A truly free press is supposed to keep public officials honest and on their best behavior, regardless of party affiliation. Unfortunately today, in Animal Farm-like fashion, our MSM pigs and government farmers are all gorging themselves at the same table and berating all the other farm animals who don’t fall in line.
In closing, I’d like to leave you with some schocka headlines from today’s wild British tabloid-like Pravda that you will never see in our ‘mainstream’ press in this Golden Age of the ObamaMessiah:

By stark contrast, our own MSM has reversed roles with Pravda in through-the-glass-darkly fashion and morphed into the Dear Leader Soviet-era version. All major MSM outlets suppressed the Jones story until it was no longer feasible, then attacked and discredited those who would dare expose a self-avowed Communist presidential appointee, all the while omitting key elements of the story and praising Jones despite it all in order to make Jones look good and his political opponents nefarious. That’s all five old-school Pravda canons rolled into one story, and that’s just Van Jones. As an American citizen, how much does that suck? Orwell had days like this. Da Svidaniya, Comrades!

Folks, this fellow is spot on. That the left will not or cannot recognize the sedition they practice through the MSM's collusion has left us on thin ice. How many of you can point to any/any real attacks on what the left has wrought in our body politic from our traditional opponents? Aside from the occasional ridiculous barbs from Hugo and Ahmed, there are none. That's because they are secretly applauding what the Axis of Weasels in the majority on Capitol Hill and in one other branch of government is doing to weaken us with massive budget deficits. Where do you think the future cuts are going to come from? Not Social Security or Medicare but Defense. If Putin et al were really upset about how things are unfolding here, they would be attacking us in their press as energetically as the old Soviets did with Reagan.
They're suspending operations in many offices. Now ask yourself, why? Unless they themselves had an inkling of an idea of the sort of people they employ, and are now scared of anyone walking through the door being a "mystery-shopper."

The alternative New(s) Media, Fox, Drudge, BB, Beck et al, is where the truth will be found.
Other sources would include the foreign press, with neither agenda nor axe to grind, reporting the more accurate assessment of the crowd size of the 912 rally in DC.
The former sources of news that now constitute the Obama propaganda machine will keep making noise, and nothing else. They are now as useless as a spare tire without air, and equally as worthless.

I mean you would think that once it started effecting their bottom line profits they would wise up and not be so blatant. I'm wondering just how long "Pinch" Sultzberg (sp? Sorry!) can hold on to the bag of "Sssh!" It has to be getting heavier by the hour, by the day, by each not reported story, to say nothing of the stench that I'm pretty certain is wafting it's way out of said bag. Those Pravda articles are… bizarre. As much as I support not rhapsodizing over how perfect the One is, it's clear that Pravda (and by extension Russia) views American values as evil. It wasn't so much Obama they're trying to tear down as America and we shouldn't forget that. What's worse is that we have a president that will try to appease Russia without understanding that they will never be happy as long as we have military supremacy. I think Obama's attitude toward Russia is naive. But then again, given Obama's agenda, maybe I'm the naive one…
This is not about ideology, all this is planned, check who owns all these networks.

If you want to know your future, observe your enemies. Thirty years ago the USSR had Pravda and ITAR-TASS spoon-feeding stories such as you tell. I noted about fifteen years ago that our press was trending fast in the direction of the USSR. With Obama they have officially arrived, though they were effectively there at Rathergate.
That our press should have gone the way of our enemies, and out government trend so sharply in that direction, is not necessarily karma; it may be also the result of two generations' work by the ACLU, the KGB, Saudi oil money and just the lefties who pulled us out of Viet Nam all growed up and infesting government. For whatever reason, we have become like our enemy.

The MSM so desperately wanted a black president, they invented one. He obviously is bi-racial. He is not black. He is not African-American. He is bi-racial. I'd even accept mulatto. But constantly referring to him as black and the MSM does is intellectually dishonest.

Given current circumstances all over, it begs the question: are we seeing Iron Curtains rising across the planet? Or one big mothering Iron Blanket? Scary stuff. I've been wondering if I'm paranoid, but Putin seems like the kind of guy who would be happy to go back to the old Soviet Union. I get a feeling that Russia is looking for its old prominence and that they'll go about getting it any way they can. What really worries me is that Obama isn't Reagan and I'm pretty sure Putin knows it and is taking advantage of it. I don't know enough about Medvedev .. Putin still seems to be the one in power as far as I can tell and he's a thug.

It disheartens me that after 12 years of me preaching this that so many new articles are popping up now about something that was so clear and evident so long ago. But the part that makes this the most distasteful is writer after writer and so many of these blogs and internet sites that now are recognizing the left wing state run propaganda media, is they are still not using the page or monitor it is being read on. This is a time for all of you writers not to finally recognize the obvious. Wow the lights are on and people are being awakened all over the country, the world in fact. And yet you waste your typing skills and the fees of the internet to be redundant. How about making your skills useful. The cure is easy. Boycotts work. That is history. People vote with their cash. Work strikes bring governments to their knees. I don't see any organizing, I see no calls for boycotts…I see no leadership. I see a bunch of intellects 12 years behind the loop.

I would give anything to contradict the 'Pravda' charge on our media. But I can't. As someone who grew up in the 50's, that is too frightening for words. How did we get to the point where now our media is Orwell's pigs – we can't tell them apart from the bad guys?

It took alternative media to unmask the latent bias and the MSM reacted by being overtly biased. We conservatives understand what their agenda is and it's downright comical to see these elitists made irrelevent by the informed right. Unfortunately they are enabled by the ignorant and gullible, of which judging by who is the POTUS, are in abundance.
The thing that really infuriates, is after pol after pol shows them we as a people see the leftwing bias, and no longer believe them automatically,.. their response is pure Axelrod.

The President's Sunday news show blitz proves Mr. Simpson's point. President Obama will appear on just about every news show Americans watch except Chris Wallace's show on Fox News. No matter how badly the President wants to change the minds of those Americans who oppose his healthcare reform plan – many of whom watch Fox News – he won't go where he won't be provided with the "soft pillow" he gets from most of the MSM. The result of this strategy is that more and more Americans are losing faith in a President who behaves more like a petty, weak and vindictive politician than the bipartisan unifier he represented himself to be during the campaign. Instead of being a leader who rises above all the ideological bickering to serve the people, he lectures and scolds those who don't agree with him, while fawning over those who do. It is his un-Presidential behavior as much as his liberal policy that 's causing his approval rating to fall and with all that Ivy League "genius" surrounding him, it's amazaing no one, including the President, has figured that out.
But nobody really hated Clinton. He was kind of like the slightly shady uncle who you wouldn't leave alone in a room with your teenage daughter, but who could be likeable and charming, especially with a few drinks in him.
Also, he wasn't an extreme left-wing ideologue.
I've asked this question of card-carrying democrats many times, and I have yet to get a coherent answer:

Well, in contemporary American society it's become conventional to view mixed race offspring as "black". Although this seems to me like a peculiar form of racism, there is no stigma attached.
What I find fascinating is that Obama doesn't share a single thing in common, genetically, culturally, or historically, with the 99% majority of American blacks, whose ancestors were brought over from the animist tribes of west central Africa, whereas Obama's father comes from an east African muslim tribe and only briefly visited America in the 1960s on a student visa.
The only connection Obama could possibly have to the common American blacks' heritage of slavery and oppression is through his white mother.
And yet, nobody cares. Heck, Vijay Singh (the pro golfer) is way blacker than Obama, and he's from Fiji.
But if you mention any of that stuff, you're a "racist"…

Hey Tom. I believe Clinton to be a consummate politician, his first two tears were as looney left as they come. His ideological wings were clipped in ’94 with Newt and “the Contract with America.” He then hires Dick Morris and started his “Trianglization Strategy,” and ran the country from the middle. Barry, is a true ideolog and will probably go down with his beliefs and unfortunately the country to a degree.
Never assume that the Past Tense Media knows that it's actively trying to slant the news in favor of Obama and the Democrats. Always remember that liberals believe, really honestly believe, that anything conservative is Evil with a capital E. In their minds they are not slanting anything. If a liberal believes something is true, it is true.
They can't recognize their bias because they don't know they are biased. They are the truth tellers.

Fascism is attributed best to Benito Mussolini who was considered the real thinker of the movement. He also was the first to come to power taking over Italy. Hitler was impressed by the way he just took over the country without a fight Fascism was considered the "Third Way" the compromise between Capitalism and Socialism. In that way it had a Clintonian triangulation effect. Instead of removing all capitalist elements and starting over from scratch Fascism said, hey why not just have the government own all the corporations. Then changes could be made for the betterment of the people and you kept everything else that worked.
In reality it was just socialism and it led to the takeover of everything by the government. Everything was about "the State" Funny but we have our government taking over banks and auto companies today and everything is about "the State".
this idea has been nagging at me for a while, The Clintons were the first trial balloon of the 60's culture subverting the system from within. They were however, just a couple kids from the suburbs who never did have the super radical underpinnings to get the job done. They were, for all intents and purposes, hippie wannabe types.
Realizing that the wannabes couldn't get the job done, the true radicals needed to have their own candidate. Who better than a product of a broken home, without a father figure to mold them. Someone to take under their wings, indoctrinate, protect, and give a false sense of being one of the cool kids. (Is there anyone of us who was not flattered to be noticed by the older kids in school? and would we not have acted against our own best interests to keep that status?)
The only way that the true radicals could be able to ascend to the top was to have someone with no easily discernible ties to the machine, not tied by age to them, who could play to the lowest common denominator of the Democratic party, white guilt. Beloved Leader is this guy, every radical puppetmaster's dream.
You can get another perspective reading the British press. I had not really read any opinion pieces or national (British) government reporting. BBC America has panels that become really liberal and at times I change the channel because I am just not interested. The Financial Times seems to detail fact about American stories that the New York Times for instance would downplay or not report. Perhaps they miss the memos about what is orthodoxy here in America, I don;' know.
What do you think is the "slant" at the British press? I think it may have different agendas – good article by the way.
Jaynie, Good points all. Yet the apparatchiks of the Soviet-era Pravda and other Russian propaganda organs like Radio Moscow may have also believed that anything not Soviet or Communist was evil. Or maybe it was just self-preservation. Take what job you can from a totalitarian oligarchy. But it didn't mean their ideology didn't have to be fought tooth and nail. As I fight here.
If what you say is true, then then major MSM outlets are entitled to their erroneous and biased perceptions. In fact, they can ride them like Zorro into bankruptcy, history and the ground. Which they are, unless they get bailed out too. Can't let that happen. There has been talk of it, you know. Though I do believe government paychecks would be a much more accurate reflection of which masters they're serving these days.

Dear Mr. Simpson: If you didn't know the cover you linked to in your second paragraph was a parody (and funny, too) done by the NATIONAL REVIEW crowd, you are as sloppy as the press you affect to despise. If you did know it and suppressed this knowledge because it made your point so well for you, you are no better than the DAILY KOS crowd you really do despise.

I find the Pravada articles boring with a smattering of a type of snobish redundancy that you find in many European articles.
Be that as it may it doesn't take a genius to see through what we have now as POTUS.
Watching George Stepenopoulas interviewing Obama today summed up what we have as our all powerful leader and that is a snake oil salesman, simple as that.
I admit that George actually gave a fair interview, which was surprising but Obama's responses were exactly as most people expected.
Elusive and twisted.Watching Obama attempt to twist simple statements into meaning something other than the obvious was amusing, watching Obama refuse to answer other questions was telling and of course watching him lie and lie badly is something we all come to expect now when he speaks, we don't really need Europeans to point out the obvious but they are free to enjoy the freak show the same as anyone I suppose.
