What’s President Obama’s Script For Iran?
by John T. SimpsonYou know, people, I really wish I knew what the story was regarding President Obama’s puzzling diplomatic approach to Islamist Iran. Inquiring Minds Want To Know. This ain’t no movie, and I really don’t like the storyline to date. Haven’t since 1979. So what’s the script? White House Productions seems to be holding the storyline in blackout mode, and at this point I’m ready to put former FOX reporter Roger Friedman on the job of rooting it out. He sure did a bang-up job on “Wolverine.”
To be fair, I actually gave the President credit in this March 26th opinion piece entitled “Is President Obama Turning The Tables on Iran?” See, it occurred to me that the President might be undertaking a very brilliant strategy toward the Islamic Republic. If the President offers the Iranian regime nothing but carrots and gets nothing but sticks in return, then the regime is exposed as the hard case it really is. Nobody could say the President hadn’t tried every means at his disposal to make peace.
The BusHitler isn’t around for the regime to hide behind anymore. Just the opposite, in fact. President Obama has gone out of his way to accommodate the regime in Tehran, and it is unacceptable for the Iranian government to only respond with continued contempt and hostility toward America and the Obama White House. They then become exposed for all the world to see what they really are: a hard-line extremist dictatorship with absolutely no interest in diplomacy.
Yet if exposing the regime were the President’s goal, it has long been achieved. In the case of Roxana Saberi, the regime promised to release her ’soon’ on March 6th, a day after Secretary of State Clinton’s demand for her release. But instead of a timely let-go as promised, the regime not only continued to hold Roxana in Evin prison in defiance of international law and simple human decency, the charges against her escalated from buying a bottle of wine to reporting without press credentials to trumped-up charges of espionage, for which Roxana was sentenced to eight years in Evin prison in a fifteen-minute lawyer-free religious tribunal kangaroo court.
I’m sure many liberals and lefties consider the Iranian regime’s release of Roxana Saberi as a magnanimous humanitarian gesture and a hopeful sign, an opinion the President himself expressed. Yet there was nothing humanitarian at all about Roxana’s months-long unlawful detention in Evin. I remember the psychological deterioration. The hunger strike. Fears for Roxana’s safety, health, and well-being. The torment of Roxana’s parents throughout the ordeal, never mind for Roxana herself. The worldwide condemnation and outrage.
If Iran has been magnanimous here, it is only in the way an armed robber in Boston was once merciful to me as a teenager, taking everything I owned at gunpoint, but leaving me a dollar so I could catch a train back home to Cambridge instead of having to walk ten miles. And don’t think the regime released Roxana because they’re nice guys. The heat on the regime to release Roxana was nuclear. If there’s one thing dictatorships despise, it’s bad PR. Ruins their image.
For fascist dictatorships like Iran’s, as with Hollywood celebrities, Image Is All.
But Roxana was not the only glaring example of the Islamist Iranian government’s hostility and intransigence. After President Obama personally approved visas for the nine members of AMPAS and their historic cultural and diplomatic mission to Iran, Team Oscar was met fresh off the tarmac with heated and unreasonable demands for apologies and submission, even with complaints that thirty films currently in production in Tinseltown did not meet Mad Mullah standards.
Civilized nations don’t act like this. Olive Branch #1 slapped out of the President’s hand.
On March 20th, even as Roxana was still being held in Evin despite SOS Clinton’s demand for her release two weeks earlier, President Obama sent a video message of peace to the Iranian people. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, perhaps the most powerful official in Iran, responded to that diplomatic outreach by throwing Death To America rallies to remind the Iranian people that the Great Satan was just Under New Management.
Meet the new bosses. Same as the old. Olive Branch #2 slapped out of the President’s hand.
And on the day North Korea set off its second nuke, President Ahmadinejad reiterated that the West would receive absolutely no cooperation whatsoever regarding their shady nuke program. The President has since stated that Iran has a right to nuclear power, yet that is not the question here. Every nation should have the right to nuclear power. Even Japan, which has a ‘no nukes’ clause written into their Constitution, is currently operating 55 nuclear reactors for their energy needs.
Yet Japan does not find it necessary to place anti-aircraft missile batteries at their nuclear facilities, as Iran has at their nuclear site at Natanz and elsewhere. Nor has Japan, or any other nation, been caught with its pants down trying to use the New York banking system to finance the smuggling of bootleg nuclear components that have no peaceful purpose whatsoever.
The President has given Iran until the end of the year to comply with international demands to open their shady nuclear program up to inspection. Yet famed Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau testified to Congress on May 19th that Iran may be within six months of getting a nuke. At that point, the horse is out of the barn.
This takes us to yet another common talking point among liberals and lefties. If the United States and Israel can have nukes, why not Iran? The answer to me is very simple. When it comes to nuclear weapons, Sanity Matters. North Korea would sell nuclear and other WMD technologies to the highest bidder, and if Al Qaeda wins the auction, ka-ching! And Iran’s extremist leaders have sworn up and down that Israel is radioactive history just as soon as they get theirs.
Funny thing about libs, lefties, and Iranian nukes. If a radical Christian nation were racing to build illegal nukes, while at the same time promising nuclear Armageddon on a Muslim neighbor, they’d all be excreting bricks. But even all this is only scratching the surface of the horrors of the Islamist regime in Tehran. At home, they stone and hang women and young girls, murder bloggers, execute minors, hold mass hangings (as recently as May 15th), and hunt down and exterminate LGBTs.
Outside their borders, they fund and arm their terrorist proxies Hamas and Hezbollah to the teeth, and supply heavy weaponry to both Shiite extremist militias in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Iranian EFPs alone have killed hundreds of American and British soldiers in Iraq. Yet even despite this evidence of Iranian complicity in the spilling of yet another ocean of American blood, the Obama Administration invites Iran to the Afghanistan Conference in The Hague to discuss security with the regime that is backing all the killing, and undermining every allied effort to stabilize the region.
As a bonus, Iran has now successfully exported their own anti-gay pogrom to Iraq, much as Hitler exported his to Poland. Am I the only one seeing all this? Again, what’s the script? How many times do you have to be beaten and bloodied to realize that the storyline to date just ain’t working?
For those who think the upcoming elections in Iran could bring a new era of peace and democracy to that troubled nation, should a wave of so-called ‘moderates’ win hands-down, you don’t know Iranian politics. Moderates are routinely disqualified from the election process by Supreme Leader Khamenei and his Guardian Council of Mad Mullahs. Party Members in Good Standing only.
Example. Conservative reform candidate Mohsen Rezaei, now running against Ahmadinejad, is wanted by Interpol for his involvement as an Iranian ‘diplomat’ in the worst terror attacks in Argentina’s history. That warrant was issued on May 22nd. That’s the reform candidate? And regardless of any election outcome, the theocrats rule supreme in Iran, and can overturn any government decision or ruling by the Majlis, Iran’s Parliament, if deemed ‘un-Islamic’ by the Mullahs.
No separation of church and state in Islamist Iran. The church, in fact, IS the state.
No Hope for Change on that score anytime soon. Yet despite all the hostility, all the belligerence, all the horrific human rights violations, all the arming and funding of Hamas, Hezbollah, the Taliban and our mortal enemies in Iraq, which is impeding our desire to detach ourselves from that mess, as in Mosul, where Iranian-funded militias are causing all sorts of bloody mischief, the President continues to consider Iran a worthy diplomatic partner. Based on what evidence, I ask you?
And now, he invites them to Fourth of July parties. What does he hope to accomplish with that? Reciprocal invitations of American diplomats to Death To America rallies in Tehran? Hell, the regime’s idea of the Fourth of July is lighting up the night sky with burning American flags and setting off fireworks on the US!
I really just don’t get this story at all, people. The Obama Plan For Iran seems to me a not well thought-out, incredibly naive, and ill-advised production that appears to be headed for a very tragic ending. Though no one in their right minds would advocate war with Iran, the President’s rose-colored glasses approach is leading us straight down that path. You don’t stop crime by taking all the policemen off the streets. You only invite chaos.
By acquiescing to Iran’s demand for ‘peaceful’ nuclear power, despite all the evidence to contrary, the President has practically assured war by leaving Israel no other choice but to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities out of pure self-preservation. Let’s face it, if Mexico were a fascist Islamist regime arming hostile neighbors who attacked us at every opportunity, was working on a shady nuke program, and was threatening our nuclear annihilation on a regular basis, what would YOU do?
President Obama now finds himself in the same position British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain found himself in at Munich in 1938, given all the glaring evidence. He can choose dishonor or war. If he continues to choose the former, he will get the latter. The Iranian regime to date has hit us with enough sticks to tell us in very clear terms that the carrots just ain’t working. Just like Chamberlain got pummeled. More pressure on the regime, not less, is what is called for here.
Hollywood Diplomacy isn’t working. Never has. Given the circumstances, I would even go so far as to demand the regime open up its nuclear facilities to international inspection and put an end to this impending threat of Iranian nukes once and for all, or cut off all their processed gasoline imports. See how fast nationwide gas rioting gets them moving in the right direction.
There are alternatives to war, like squeezing the regime until they cry uncle. But with each passing day, those alternatives grow fewer. You can practically smell the anxiety wafting over from Israel, and newly elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has never been one to sit by with his thumb up his ass as an existential threat grows on Israel’s horizon.
The history is clear. When the Osirak reactor posed a mortal threat to Israel in 1981, Israeli jets took it out (ironically, the Iranians also took potshots at Osirak during the Iran-Iraq War). They likewise took out a suspect nuclear site in Syria last year. And I can guarantee you, the Israelis don’t give one hoot about what Obama would think about it. This is a matter of survival to them. Would you?
Even further muddying the storyline here are President Obama’s recent declarations regarding America being a major Muslim nation, and revelations of his own Muslim heritage he found so necessary to deny during his presidential campaign. Just where exactly do his sympathies lie in all this? As an American citizen watching this bizarre story unfold, I think that’s a very fair question.
How will it all end? Who knows what plot twists lie in store? I could be totally wrong, and I hope I am. But I’ve seen enough productions like this in the past to know that happy endings are rare.
Again, I ask you, Mister President: What’s the script? Because if you want me to back this production, I want to know where this story is going. There ain’t a filmmaker or studio in Hollywood that would invest in a Cecil B. DeMille-scale venture like this without knowing the endgame. Israelis aren’t the only ones vulnerable to dispositions of intense anxiety. And if the story ends tragically, like Michael Caine in “Dark Knight,” it will bring me absolutely no joy to tell you, “I told you so.”
But I already read the book.

President Obama wants Iran nuclear for so-called "peaceful purposes." It's a folly's gambit.
So, ummm… can we infiltrate the Iranian government and take it over from the inside? That would be a good story! A really long one, but a good one!
Unless I am mistaken, Obama's script for Iran is:
Plan A: Shine his messiah light of goodness upon them, and all problems will fix themselves.
Plan B: Frown and wag finger.
Plan C: Blame Bush for leaving him this situation.
Plan D: Repeat Plan C.
we could have- if given the will. But now that The One has apologized for the CIA involvement in the 50's 'helping' establish Shah Reza Pahlavi and the hated SAVAK (Iranian intelligence) any other such interference is now impossible… so, they ahve dedided a nuclear Iran is a counterpoint to Israel and are proceeding down that track as counterbalances…
We'll see what the Israelis think about that.
"Correctomundo!" – The Fonz
Great summation, Mr. Simpson.
I can answer your question, I believe. When you are raised, as Obama was, to believe that the greatest evil in the world is the United States of America, then you a hero if you bring that evil down. William Ayers believed that he could defeat the United States by bombing it. Then he realized a better way; destroy the school system, destroy the country from within. Eventually, get a radical as President and complete the process of tearing apart the great evil that is the United States.
Those of us who actually studied history, those of us who understand what is being done, we have a different opinion about who is evil and who is good in this story. But to Obama, he is the One, the hero.
Now I'm going to go vomit a little bit in my mouth.
Let us hope that like the Fonz, Obama jumps the shark on Iran.
For all his faults, Bush understood how those who wish to destroy us think, and played the game accordingly. Obame fantasizes that he controls the game, or at the very least, can bluff his way out of this dilemma. He and his advisors suffer from the thinking error of superoptimism; my teenagers sometimes exhibit the same characteristics as they go through the maturing process.
I've yet to hear a cohesive statement of just what Obama will do at the end of the year when (not if…let's be realists) Iran still hasn't lived up to international demands regarding its nuclear program. By then, the mess will be even more difficult to clean up. My children act at times as though a maid lives at our house, willing and ready to clean up after them (granted, a messy room doesn't have the same far-reaching impact as a nuclear Iran). Kids don't always want to grow up; terrorist states from Iran to N. Korea now understand that US leadership doesn't want to either. It's embarrassing to think that we expect Israel to provide maid service on an international level.
I can't see the Israelis letting this farce continue. Their lives are at stake in the game that The One is playing.
we believe you're right- and that a shooting war is coming before next spring. The Dems are so painting themselves in a corner by this triangulation theory. Iran poses an existential threat to Israel, going back, oh, say 3,000 years or so. This dispute goes back to Moses and the promised land of Caanan, to King David and Uriah the Hittite… so to expect them to do an Itchy and Scratchy 'Porch Pals'
thing just because The One is so damn charming is the biggest hoot of all time…
except we're not laughing…
Iran has been at war with us since 1979. Obama is simply the latest in a distrubing amount of people in power that are in denial about that. Unfortunately he is also armed with a sympathetic congress of fools that will allow him dangle this country over the shark tank.
The dynamic that has changed this issue is the nuclear issue. In the past, Iran did not present a true "serious" threat to Israel because Iran just had no way to get their troops to Israel (excluding proxy militia). But now a nuclear bomb suddenly means that Iran can do an unimaginable level of damage to Israel. The democrats don't understand how this changes the equation. Israel has no choice but to act, just as you or I would act if someone was coming at us with a knife. They can't wait to see if Obama's magic talking powers can calm the Iranians.
you're right- they think that a USSR-US nuclear standoff is the resolution. However evil the Empire was they weren't suicidal, and didn't believe in the 12th Imam… so this logic is horribly flawed. Iran can, and will use the 'nuclear option'. We predict an Israeli attack late this year.
The question is what will we do? will assistance be offered- or more likely, a Bay of Pigs scenario where we pull the pin at the last minute and hang Israel out to dry…
Erm, Shah Reza Pahlavi was 'established' in 1941 when his father abdicated and he inherited the Peacock Throne. In 1953 he was declared deposed by the dictator (yes he was) Mossadegh and the royalist Army revolted.. Yes, with CIA/MI6 assistance, since Mossadegh had invited the Soviet military into Iran (usually overlooked in all the lefty bleating over Anglo-Iranian Oil).
Oh, and SAVAK? A nasty bunch- but in three decades they tortured and/or killed around 2800 people- less than a tenth of those buthchered by Khomeini in his first year alone.
When I see Obama returning from Egypt with that big grin on his face, I keep seeing Neville Chamberlain returning from Munich to smile and wave a white paper that will give England 'peace in our time'.
There's only one problem. The enemy Chamberlain appeased could only send his warheads across the English Channel. The one Obama appeases can send them around the world.
The prophet Obama will fail and sadly, we and perhaps Israeil will pay the price. Jimmy Carter looks tough as nails next to this Toad.
And if it works, he'll do the same thing for the convicted journalists in North Korea. Until Obama came along, Bushitler's disapproval gave Kim his opening to be defiant. But with the Messiah in office, his reasonableness will shame North Korea into behaving. Those journalists will be free in nothing flat. And if you believe that, I've got this big orange bridge in San Francisco I'm willing to sell you. Well, back to Plan C.
agreed- we didn't mean the Shah hadn't been the titular leader; it was the removal of Mossadegh, a Red sympathizer that we were referring to. And SAVAK was a nasty, but not evil, bunch… bordering the Soviet Union was a daunting task and the Iran/UK/US nexus was hugely important.
No longer…
I am constantly astounded by the depth and breadth of Obama's brilliance. Until now, I just thought he was being a wuss. Now I know it's all part of a grand plan to confuse Imadinnerjacket and the Iranian leaders. Once the Obamassiah has finished shaming the rulers for their intransigence with his Gandhi-like pose, the people will rise up, the leadership will be thrown out, journalists will be released, and there will be peace on earth. Next: Kim Jong Il.
To: President Aquavelvajacket – please don't cause me any problems right now. I am singlehandedly dismantling the west. When I'm finished, you can just take what you want. Isreal schmisreal – never heard of 'em. Love and understanding, BHO
I think you guys are right. And don't forget, Iran has no reason to think that anyone will actually drop the bomb on them in retaliation. Israel would retaliate, if they could. But if they can't, will we?
And if the Israeli's don't retaliate immediately, what happens then? "The world" (i.e. the appeasers at the UN) will fall all over themselves just to demand that everyone be calm.
[...] What’s President Obama’s Script For Iran? by John T. Simpson [...]
this plays out Gasbag Joe's prediction about the appearance of"getting everything wrong- be patient with us- spine of steel", statement. It is very possible this scenario can and will play out, with the concommitant horribly wrong reaction, dithering, and posturing- you'll see it all. So will we, unfortunately…
I had no doubt that Slow Joe was right when he said that. And so far he's been right about almost every single policy Obama has undertaken — I've never seen how they've been right yet.
in a strange way Joe is the gift that keeps giving… you're right he has been correct on just about everything- we've never thought him dishonest, just not all that bright.
He just said there is corruption extant in the Porkulus bill- that it basically can't be helped in big spending programs such as this- no surprise, but at least he admits it… and every policy initiative (economic) postulated by this lot has been from bad
(GM) to horrible (health care, etc.) so his little digs are actaully quite refreshing.
We do want to know what The One WILL do without his 'prompter…
AUTHOR'S UPDATE: There is an illuminating ABC TV interview with Roxana Saberi on Breitbart TV. She was guilty of nothing, unlike her interrogators. Also, the Iranian regime responded to Obama's message of hope from Cairo as an opportunity to remind everyone how hated we are. Is it any surprise only 29% of Iranians in a recent poll don't hate America?
The Death To America rallies seem to be working. Hey, if it worked at Nuremburg, why not?
John,
I understand that we are actually quite popular in the underground over there — and with the young. I guess it's just a rebellion thing.
What’s President Obama’s Script For Iran?
Apologize, then surrender.
That is a big Hallalula and AMEN!
Isn't "Death to America" the full length flick, doing boffo boxoffice all over Iran? It did so well in limited release that Iraguzahmided Bros. may get behind it with a big as campaign including some live be-headings! I think it may be Clooney's best work since…since…well, EVER! Oh well. I'm at a internet cafe in Genoa, Italy and the cast of characters in here looks like the bar scene from "Star Wars". The various languages range from some African dialect to Spanish and Italian to who the hell knows what…this Euro-keyboad is so wore out I'm getting a headache trying to "type" on it. Dom, I'll e-mail you soon, school is over and I'l now wandering Euro-land. If you all like tiny cars and and a general I-don't-give-a-damn attitude this the place for you!
When Iran goes nuclear, I am certain Obama will blame President Bush for it.
I thought that the arrest and prosecution of Roxana Saberi was a brilliant maneuver by the Iranians. It was a bench test to determining how the Obama government would respond to a direct provocation involving supposedly cherished principals of free expression and free press. The answer was "not much." The Western media gave a collective yawn to the story (even though she was "One of Our Own") and she was released after she had served her purpose. I guarantee the next provocation will not be quite so benign. As has been stated by many the clear intent of the O administration is to keep foreign affairs at arm's lengt, no matter what the cost,h while it carries on it's revolution at home. Hail Oceania!
President Obama's responses:
1) Blame President Bush.
2) Threaten to sic the United Nations on North Korea.
3) Hillary Clinton has already said the United States is ready to place North Korea as a rogue nation once more on the Terrorist Watch List.
4) Ignore it & hopes Kim Jong Il stops long enough for Obama to transform the USA into the USSR.
Woops, I'm thinking North Korea–not Iran.
Obama will have a similar response to Iran.
Barry’s script for Iran = weep and grovel and appease if that doesn’t work then, weep and grovel and appease, then, BOOM!
jhshub, Anyone who knows the Iranian regime knows Roxana's captivity was a key test, and they all failed it Big Time. The White House, State, the press, everyone. In fact, they tried to sweep Roxana under the rug like she was bad press for the Obamamessiah. This link should give you an idea of just how bad it was. But good call. On the ball! PS this linked story's up over 8000 hits. Best readership of anything I've ever done.

I can picture Obama doing the Crocodile Dundee with the water buffalo with Iran and subdue them. But it won't work here. They don't have a reason not to continue what they're doing. He's talked to them semi-sternly and gave them the evil eye. Scares me, but I'm thinking it won't make much of a difference with them or North Korea. One can only hope.

The associate rector at our (conservative Anglican) church spent many years in Jordan, even raised his children there until a year or so ago (he ran a school for missionaries to come and learn Arabic). He love the Arab (his term) people, has a real heart for them and their culture. He held a series of classes on the differences between Christianity and Islam (which is completely and totally grounded in the Arab culture). The main difference between the Arab world and the Western world, according to him) is integrity vs. honor. In Western culture, we value integrity: honesty, admitting when you're wrong, keeping your word, etc. The Arab world values honor: getting respect, saving face, strength associated with authority. Our assoc. rector says that lying is acceptable behavior in the Arab world because they do not value integrity. If lying will help you save face, you lie. Bullying is acceptable behavior. If bullying someone else will get you respect, it's OK to bully them. And the goal of most of the Arabic/Islamic world is total world domination by Islam.
(Continued from above..my post was too long) Unless or until our current regime understands this, I'm afraid we are in for a very rough road ahead. There is no appealing to their 'better and/or more human side." They don't think the way they do, and it's a deeply imbedded cultural mass think. There are only two options in dealing with the Arab culture: (1) kowtow and try to appease them or (2) overpower them. The first option, clearly the choice of our current leadership, will only serve to show America as weak, and mark my word, they WILL capitalize on that. The second option is the only choice that can keep the Islamic jihad at bay.
I just spoke to one of the techs who just loaded Obama's script for Iran into the teleprompter. My understanding is that it goes something like this:
"And I ran.
I ran so far away.
I just ran.
I ran all night and day.
I couldn't get away."
I tell ya – there are more miscommunications surrounding that teleprompter…
Actually, Mr Obama reportedly said, "America is the largest Muslim Nation" In Obamaspeak that is true. America is a large nation and America has some Muslims ergo in Obamalogic and hyperboly that means America is the largest Muslim nation. No matter what approach he takes towards Iran it it destined to fail. Iran wants nothing from the west (the Great Satan). We are anathema to their way of thinking. They play by rules so outrageous we can't believe our eyes. Ahmadinejad is an outrageous liar, I assume a character trait of Iranian politicians and bureaucrats. Therefore, whether it be Barack Obama or Dick Cheney responding to the Iranian challenge, eventually this must turn out badly. Only if Iran sheaths its saber will swords not cross.
Mr. Simpson, you're not alone on this one. Mr. Ledeen's been on this case for a long time too. But we need alot more speaking about this. Iran's not going to take over large swaths of the world like the axis did. But the craziness in the brains of their leaders is more than enough to take this threat seriously. And I loved the point about SAM missle batteries defending their nuclear sites. Peacefull intentions? Me thinks they dost protest too much!
I tell ya – there are more miscommunications surrounding that teleprompter…
…and a flock of seagulls hanging around.
"Peacefull intentions? Me thinks they dost protest too much!"
Remember, it's perfectly acceptable to lie in their world, as long as they are getting what they want: power, respect and the spread of Islam, by force if necessary.
