What if President Obama Were a Republican?
by John T. SimpsonIn my Big Hollywood post of April 27th, I decried the media’s acting as a cheerleading fourth branch of government, in which the MSM has not only assumed a Dear Leader-like reverence and awe for our new president, but attacks any and all critics with slander, ridicule, and even intimidation, and discounts any real concerns by the public as right wing extremist rabble-rousing and racism.
Given my love of true reporting and Woodward and Bernstein-like investigative journalism, which is really nowhere to be found in this Messianic Media Age of Obama, it was a very depressing piece to write. But after the recent flyover of New York City by Air Force One and F-16 fighter jets, which sent half of the Big Apple fleeing for their lives, it occurred to me.
How would the Left report the news if Obama were a Republican, i.e. an Uncle Tom, as many on the Left call now-GOP Chairman Michael Steele? Eureka! That’s it! See, it’s one thing for me to point out the obvious, as I did in my media slam yesterday. But what if we walked GOP President Obama’s media coverage through the mirror darkly, as was SOP for President Bush?
NOW we’re gonna have some fun!
Let’s start with MSNBC’s ‘Countdown’ with Keith Olbermann, on Republican President Obama’s electoral landslide victory in November, and his 96% sweeping of the black vote.
KO: “It would seem the sinister and morally bankrupt Republican ploy of taking the White House with a totally inexperienced and faux minority candidate has been the most resounding political success for the GOP since the Reichstag Fire. Could African-Americans not act more self-destructively than in their rush to the polls to elect this Republican wolf in Martin Luther King clothing?
“Do they want to go back to slavery? For this abomination and slap in the face of freedom-loving Americans everywhere, and which has condemned this nation to yet another four endless years of war and jingoistic right wing fascism, I hereby declare every African-American voter who pulled the lever for this Republican Omar Bashir as the Worst Person in the World.”
Next up? Susan Roesgen of CNN, wandering through the crowd at a Democratic Chicago Tea Party.
SR, pointing to a protester wearing an Obama as Hitler/Satan mask: “Over here, we have a President Obama look-alike.” SR turns to a man in top hat holding a child. “What is your issue with the President, sir?” MAN: “It’s bad enough President Bush put us on the verge of bankruptcy. It appears the ObamaHitler is intent on finishing the job.”
SR: “Do you really believe President Obama when he tells us the City of Chicago will be getting fifty billion in new aid?” A protester wearing a KILL OBAMA tee shirt interjects: “No way! This is all for his and Darth Biden’s warmongering lobbyist friends in Halliburton and Blackwater! We’ll never see a dime of that money! KILL OBAMA! KILL BIDEN!”
Death chants rise in unison from the crowd. SR turns to the camera, smiling. “There you have it.”
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, on Iranian hostage Roxana Saberi.
WB: “It has now been nearly three months since Roxana Saberi was arrested in Iran, allegedly for buying a bottle of wine, and with no concrete action to free her by this administration. Even worse, since Ms. Saberi’s kangaroo court conviction on trumped-up charges of espionage, which is as common for reporters in Iran as citations for jaywalking are here, she has gone on a hunger strike, and her condition is worsening by the day.
“I cannot help but be reminded of murdered Iranian-Canadian journalist Ziba Kazemi, who was beaten, flogged, raped, her fingernails pulled and her skull fractured in Evin prison, ironically for the crime of taking pictures of protesters outside Evin. How many more journalists have to come out of Iran in body bags before this President will act?”
Markos Moulitsas of Daily KOS, on Air Force One’s low flyover of New York City with F-16 escort.
KOS: “The scariest thing for me out of this whole episode is how easily the ObamaHitler managed to arrange a Boeing 747 to fly low over New York City with nobody knowing, and I mean nobody! Is it really much of stretch to believe now that the BusHitler couldn’t have arranged the same thing on 9/11 with remotely-controlled commercial airliners?
“I can’t help but wonder. Was this a test run? And why this time? To accelerate the rush to war with Iran? The only questions that remain for me are these: When? And which American city does the ObamaHitler and his Halliburton buddies plan to turn into a bombed-out crater next, in order to get another round of war profiteering off to a Grand Old Start? Call me a tinfoil hat paranoid NOW! I dare you! I double-dare you!
“The ObamaHitler. Brand new color. Same old warmongering right wing fascism. Screw ‘em!”
Al Franken, America’s most popular radio talk show host, on President Obama’s political targeting of him from the White House itself.
AF: “It would seem President Obama and his fawning Reichminister, Rahm Emmanuel, don’t like my rousing nationwide success in calling them out for who they really are. This attempt to target me personally, a private citizen, from the White House, with all its authority and power, puts on display for all to see that the BusHitler’s self-groomed replacement’s ambitions exceeds even that of Darth Rove and his fascist leash-holder.
“Not only did that Hitler-like persecution of me personally not work, it has backfired badly. My nationwide listener numbers on Air America are skyrocketing. I suppose it’s time now to implement the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which President Obama’s Reichstag-like stooges in Congress are pushing at this very moment.
“I find it particularly disturbing that Republican House Speaker John Boner, spearheading this shredding of the Constitution, finds no fault with FIX News, Goon Beck, Shill O’Reilly or Bum Rush Limbaugh, all of whom ragged us as ballsuckers during our Tea Parties and implied we would become violent, but finds plenty wrong with NPR, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC and especially my Air America. Talk about Brownshirts calling the kettle black!
“See you in the Gulag, Keith! The Countdown is on!”
Michael Moore, on the controversial DHS Left Wing Extremism Report and DHS Fusion Centers.
MM: “After reading this incredibly vague and exceptionally broad DHS report on Left Wing Extremism, can anyone really say this isn’t an attempt by the Obama Administration and the Republicans to silence dissent in this country once and for all? Individuals who protest the war, support abortion, favor tougher gun laws, the rights of undocumented immigrants, even those who oppose the federal government itself, are called out as potential terrorists!
“My next anti-war film could land me in jail! I’m sorry, who are the extremists here again?
“Even the DHS Civil Liberties Division objected to the broad language of the report, which Obama’s Himmler-like DHS Secretary Janet Nazipolitano seemed to be in a hurry to rush out the door, and just in time for our nationwide protests. Coincidence? I think not. It is quite clear to me what this report says: “You are either with us, or you’re a terrorist.”
“No surprise there. And how ironic, considering the right wing extremists in the Hitlerite Obama regime are the real terrorists. Today’s Grand Old Party is not the party of Lincoln. It is the party of Hitler and Mussolini. Given the present occupier of the Oval Office, perhaps Idi Amin would be a better analogy.”
“By the way, you may want to look into DHS Oberfuhrer Nazipolitano’s so-called fusion centers. There are seventy of them around the country now. One fusion center in Virginia declared all of the state’s universities ‘nodes for radicalization.’ Another in Texas warned about the terrorist threat from the ‘International Far Left.’ And Nazipolitano calls them ‘the wave of the future.’ This nationwide politically-motivated DHS network is called ‘The National Fusion Center Coordination Group.’
“Anyone else thinking Einsatzgruppen besides me? That’s what Hitler called his Special Action Groups. Who’s going to head those up? Obama’s radical right wing extremist preacher Jeremiah Wright? Or his Timothy McVeigh-like pal Bill Ayers, who knows a few things about throwing bombs and killing innocents? You DO see where all this is going, don’t you, people? Should be as plain as the Swastika flag flying over the ObamaHitler White House!”
The Guardian/UK’s Charlie Brooker, just prior to President Obama’s GOP landslide.
“On November 4, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Obama loses. And Sod’s law dictates he’ll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. James Earl Ray – where are you now that we need you?”
Protest sign: “Obama. The only dope worth shooting.”
Air America’s Randy Rhodes on the air, likening President Obama to Freddie Corleone.
“Do they let black people into the Mafia? No? Well, I think they ought to make an exception for President Obama. At least long enough to take him out on a boat like Freddie Corleone and phuw!” (GUNSHOT)
Democratic Underground, on the current Swine Flu pandemic.
“Like Bush intentionally withholding aid from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in order to foment misery and violence, the ObamaHitler seems content to sit back and let this flu pandemic rage unabated. DHS Secretary Nazipolitano, who is such an idiot she doesn’t even know border law, has yet to close that same border in order to stem the flow of possibly infected Mexican nationals, even though clusters have now appeared as far north of the border as Queens, NY.
“Is this criminal negligence and malfeasance also intentional? Like Obama’s Republican lackeys in Congress rejecting nine hundred million in new flu pandemic funding? Who stands to suffer the most? I have no doubt the rich, and all of the ObamaHitler’s good buddies in Washington, will get the best treatment they possibly can. Just as they did lining up for Cipro during the BusHitler’s black bag job anthrax attack on the mail system, which Der Fuhrer staged in order to invade Iraq.
“But what of inner city minorities, who stand to suffer and die the most should this pandemic explode beyond control? Makes me wonder if they knew ahead of their flu pandemic funding vote that this would happen. Or worse, even started the epidemic themselves by injecting illegal aliens being deported to Mexico. Why else would Army samples go missing?
“If true, not only does this make our new Republican ‘multicultural’ Fuhrer in Washington a mass murderer, it makes him the greatest race traitor of all time. He would be guilty of nothing less than genocide. Just like his mentor, idol and BFF Omar Bashir in Sudan. Welcome to the American Darfur, courtesy of the ObamaHitler. Feeling better now?”
The moral of the story? Despite how rough of a ride it has been at times for President Obama, Democrat, he can thank God and his lucky stars he is not a Republican.
Now ask youself. Why is that?

the idea of Al Franken as America's most popular radio host is disturbing to say the least.
We just have to wait for the MSM to collapse, and in the meantime we have to be diligent about getting plenty of information out on the internet, and by talking to our friends of all political stripes. The press and TV are hopelessly, madly in love with this snake-oil salesman, and that is simply not going to change. He is their dream, let's not let him continue to be our nightmare.
"Now ask yourself. Why is that?"
Because he would end up like Judge, Clarence Thomas or Allan Keyes or Micheal Steele or Walter Williams or Condie Rice. All traitors to their race, according to the opposition. Which believe diversity is only deserving of their party.
That was fantastic. My goodness, I can almost hear it!!
You may not have to wait long. Understand they are selling their offices in Wash DC and leasing back. Apparently, cash flow is a bit soft.
Pity.
If Obama was a republican that was against torture, anti-war, and supported healthcare as a right for all Americans, people would still like him and he would have still won the election in a landslide.
What you righties don't understand is that it's your policies that are unpopular. Stop with the whiny victim mentality. As long as your policies are unpopular and unAmerican, you will continue to be ridiculed. This is a democracy after all.
Music to my ears!
If obama were a Republican the wannabe liberal fascists would be calling him an Uncle Tom and a sellout. Liberals aren’t too fond of those that wander off the plantation.
The MSM collapsed with Woodward and Bernstein. Anyone who thinks those two got it right, are wrong. They created a source, so they could go after Nixon. "Created," a source is what they did. There was no journalistic ethics on their part. They were the Jayson Blair, of their day, before Blair was even born. Who do you think he was trying to emulate when he started "creating" his stories and false interviews?
The MSM has been in the tank for the left since Watergate. That's just how it's been. But we need to change that. And with the mess the country is in now, financial crisis, pandemic of epic proportions, global financial crisis, et al., we need reliable info, and it's not to be found in the talking heads on tv, websites, radio or newspapers. Where can you turn? No where. It's like anything else…get a second opinion, then a third, maybe a fourth and come to your own conclusion.
interestingly enough, Obama ran as a center-rightist on the surface with a stealthy left wing subtext. People want affordable health care, not the NHS from Britain. The war in Iraq was more unpopular because it wasn't being waged agressively enough than any anti-war leftist fiction. Now that Obama has won (or been annointed, if you prefer) at some point in time he will have to govern.
Then we shall see whose policies are more popular…
=== What you righties don't understand is that it's your policies that are unpopular.====
Hilarious. You know you’re not supposed to drink the bong water.
Yeah, Americans want higher taxes, rationed healthcare, limits on free speech, groveling to our enemies, nationalizing industries and a weak foreign policy.
I hate to break it to you moron but if the media had a shred of credibility and professionalism Barack Hussein would have never made it out of the primaries. If you think America is reflected in the drivel and claptrap that you see on CNN and MSLGBT and other leftwing outlets than you’re far more delusional than I thought.
not quite as disturbing as Senator Al Franken (D) Minnesota…
You are still hallucinating from last night's drugs. Obama didn't win by a landslide, he won by a decent majority. His margin of victory was about equal to the additional votes he got by lying and having the MSM swear to it. Ronald Reagan won by a landslide. You use logic like you bake pie. Which reminds me. Where's the pie?
Correction. This is a Republic.
That's what all you lefties don't understand – the Constitution. Regardless of popularity, the Constitution lays out specific powers of the Federal Government. Republicans and Democrats have overstepped the boundaries set forth by the framers, and it is high time this course was reversed. We are endowed by our Creator – life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our government has no right to take those away, however, each day as more private enterprise is nationalized and freedom of choice is being taken away (read nationalized health care among others) we move further away from natural rights, and closer to government-provided rights. It will be our downfall.
In case you haven't noticed, there is no freedom of choice in our healthcare system. Course of treatment, doctor selection, even the type of catheters used are dictated by insurance companies who are trying to profit from these decisions. Americans can't choose their insurance because most can only afford group plans through their employer. Freedom of choice cannot be only for the wealthy, but for all Americans.
The hilarious thing is the nation has already swung back. Doesn't that make you break out in flopsweat, you HuffPo troll? People are already polling stronger for Republicans than Democrats. It took 8 years of Republicans to open the door for a marginal Democrat win, and you lost that headway in less than 100 days. You're pathetic.
Yes, the 60 seat majority in the senate is really making me break out in a sweat.
Do you ever write a post without referencing bong water?
dcase, Great Satan,Uncle Commie ans Kpastore, this is Auntie up there you're replying to. That red -85 is there for a reason. Namely, this troll lacks all reason. Better to stick to the pie question like Uncle Commie and forget about engaging in coherent discussion with Auntie.
Fed up with Obama? Check out this song at: http://www.myspace.com/rogerweber
You'll feel better.
once again incorrect assertions- there is freedom of choice; most systems include literally thousands of doctors and hundreds of hospitals/medical centers to choose from. It is true that insurers dictate costs to an extent, but what do you think a single payer government system will do? It will not only dictate prices but it will ration care. That is undeniable. Many self-employed have BlueCross/Blue Shield which is quite affordable. With government run health care there will be no choice for anyone- including the so-called 'wealthy'. One suspects that is the desired socialist outcome…
you bet. Still, not to rebut the assorted silly ravings would be derelict. Truth abhors a vacuum. Besides, we hate to admit as funny as the 'pie' thing is we don't know what the heck you all are talking about…
What I would like to know, Were there any campaign contributors on the Air Force One fly by of New York? Why hasn't anyone asked this question? Was this flight payback for campaign money? Imagine if that were the case. Oh, that's right, it still wouldn't matter because it's Obama's plane now.
Parent Corp. G.E. is waaaaay to vested in pushing the leftist agenda through their main mouth organs, NBC, MSNBC, and the business channel. They'll lose what ever it takes to get the Cap & Trade boondoggle passed and cash those big Treasury checks. We are being swindled right in our face, their smiling at us and will laugh all the way to the bank that we, the tax payer bailed out. This lunacy. I hope Specter steps in front of a fast moving electric car.
===Do you ever write a post without referencing bong water?===
Do you ever make a relevant point? By the way stupid, that's the first time I wrote "bong water."
The correct question would have been: "Do you ever write a post without referencing filthy degenerate green goose-stepping leftists?"
No.
I know Dom and I try not to feed the trolls but sometimes I'm just compelled to respond. The wannabe fascist is lucky the moderators don't have leftist tendencies otherwise he'd be banned.
They say "pie" to signal that I have won the debate. It's kind of like tapping out in jiu jitsu when you have been thoroughly thrashed and can't take anymore.
A fun article, well written. But I think we should stop spending so much emotional and mental energy on this exercise of "What would the MSM do if Bush had said that?" It doesn't do anything but raise our blood pressure, and probably distracts from putting those same energies where they might do some good. (Although frankly, I don't know what that would be either.)
Actually, yes it is – when you have your supermajority you won't be able to blame things on anyone else anymore. Look forward to the swing in 2010.
And since it is a Democracy, antifascist, at least until the next DHS RWE report, you will all continue to be ridiculed as well. Just as you no doubt ridiculed us for eight straight years. If you have a problem with that, check the First Amendment. While it's still in effect, that is.
Could it be you are really the anti-anti-fascist in anti-fascist clothing?
I know where you're coming from, patti, and I hate to disagree on principle. But IMHO, W&B were fine investigative journalists. Their book 'The Brethren: Inside The Supreme Court' gives you a fly-on-the-wall view of SCOTUS you just won't find anywhere else. Again, hate to disagree, beg to differ. Credit where credit is due.
No, you moron, it's a representative republic. Try reading the Constitution you wave around as a club.
The 'pie' thing is due to the fact that AF behaves like a crotchety old Lefty spinster and her name is therefore clearly a misspelling of "Auntie".
Tsadok, 10-4. This was a break from the usual high BP stuff I post. I got to spoof everyone! Black comedy perhaps, but comedy nonetheless. Uh-oh, black comedy. Can I still say that.
crochety spinster; ergo 'pie'… ok, then. Have to admit the threads are hilarious when you keep coming back to the bakery. Thanks…
I'm not a conspiracy guy…but then again, this isn't a conspiracy…it's real, one of the three biggest media outlets is angling for government money to stay afloat. Any liberal or American that trusts NBC news now is a corporate/government dupe.
It's true AF, since Obama ended the war in Iraq and Afghanistan stopped rendition, has no ties to the healthcare industry and won by a bigger margin than Reagan. Ooops…my bad he didn't.
Senator Obama would never have made it out of the primaries due to all of his radical ties.
What if President Obama Were a Republican?
That's easy! Because then it wouldn't be historic, because it wouldn't count.
Obama would be half-white, not black according to critics. Just like Colin Powell, who was berated for light skin until he turned liberal and suddenly got the Afro-American thing going on.
Never judge a man by the color of his skin, judge him by how liberal that skin may be.
Gee-Oh, You make a VERY good point! Wish I thought of that! What's your consulting fee
I charge $100 an hour, $200 a half hour, or $500 if you realize I'm not worth consulting at all.
Usually folks feel $500 is the best deal.
===In case you haven't noticed, there is no freedom of choice in our healthcare system.===
No, I haven’t noticed, but then again I’m not trippin’ on acid all day. I buy my own healthcare through Kaiser and I have hundreds of doctors to choose from. Maybe you have no choice because you’re a lazy unemployed bum who’d rather live in his parents basement lounging around in his obama underoos eating cheetos and watching Sesame Street instead of working. I’ve worked for several companies and had insurance with all [except when I opted out in my early 20’s] and I had many doctors to choose from; and I paid less than $100 a month. If you had a job you could have the same plan. Being self employed I pay $350 a month for an equivalent plan. You think many employees have it tough? Try being self employed.
You can also thank the ambulance chasing eunuch, John Edwards, and other criminals with law degrees that frivolously sued hospitals and clinics into financial ruin, for the increase in health costs. If you want better and more affordable healthcare then socialized medicine is not the answer; ask a Cuban, Brit, Canadian.
People criticize Republicans for their naive economic theories and generally bad ideas. If Obama had been a Republican, we never would have heard of him because Republicans castigate any clear thinkers in their party as RINOs and drive them away. Like most contemporary Conservative commentary, this is little more than a paranoid fantasy. It's entirely speculative and demonstrates how little its author comprehends what is happening in the country. By working diligently to perfect its irrelevance, the Republican party accelerates its death spiral. Because the country is better off with two viable parties, one hopes a new centrist or center-right party emerges to fil the vacuum.
Great Article John !
Wickedly funny and scary all at the same time.
I'm not really sure what can be done to combat the psychotic dual personalities of most in the MSM.
Watching some of these news outlets go out of business reminds me that the free market still works even though it's been poorly maintained.
It's a spoof. Lighten up Francis.
And that scary scary 61% job approval/81%(!) personal approval rating he got from that poll the communist Wall Street Journal put out. Yeah, we liberals are really quaking in your boots.
Much as the level of intelligence in this piece makes me more certain than ever that Republican deadenders are not to be feared.
Also, maybe I'm missing something, but Randi Rhodes (who I don't like anyway) and Al Franken (who I do) haven't been on Air America for kind of a long time. At least in Al's case, I'd think you'd notice. Also, Markos Moulitsas as far as I know never called Bush Hitler. (And doing so at Dkos will likely get you ridiculed on behalf of Godwin's Law.)
Anyhow, antifascist, what I'm trying to say is ignore these people. I don't know what most of these people are like in real life, where they come from, etc, but from reading their posts there is a pervasive meanspirited idiocy here, not unlike what you see from Mr. Breitbard himself. They are really and truly not worth your or my time.
Put down the bong, and go bake us some pie already.
Yeah that's way, way more disturbing.
Who's Francis?
Perhaps it was a spoof, but one can't help thinking the author and many of his readers believe it. It has the same flavor as most recent Republican/Conservative comments.
I'm just sorry to see the Republican party dying after a century and a half. Having lost the mandate to set policy, they might help craft and shape policy. By instead holding their breath, whining and throwing tantrums, they force the adults to step over them to get the job done.
If Obama were a Republican:
He wouldn't be such a great speaker, even if he never had to use a teleprompter and didn't sneak in "uh…uh" every fifth or sixth word.
There would have been at least a dozen separate SNL skits about him already, probably harping on his cocaine use.
The clips of him trying to walk through a glass door and hitting his head on the plane would be seared into the consciousness of even the blind and deaf.
News coverage of his half-brothers living in grass huts and raping teenage girls would make the Bristol/Levi gossip look insignificant.
Bill Maher and other assorted comedians would milk the entire "promiscuous mother with a mandingo complex" diatribe in a particularly brutal fashion.
Katie Couric would have won an award for stumping him in an interview by inquiring how he could only win elections by ripping open his opponents divorce records and shaming them into dropping out.
No need to continue. You get the idea. But please feel free to add more.
It was our way of saying "don't feed the troll, let him/her/it feed us–with pie" He/she/it resolutely refuses to make us pie, but sometimes we can't help ourselves and feed him/her/it.
Right. You win, every time. So there is no need for you to go on. Enlighten your friends at the Daily Kos and Huff Po, and let us eat our store-bought pie.
The party isn't dying. We do indeed want a center-right party. We know that we have extremists on the right just as the Democrats have extremists on the left. Their extremists are in charge, ours never will be. And I suspect that you may not realize that most of us center-rightists consider RINOs at best center-left. Their me-tooism and willingness to advance the socialist program won't destroy the party, but it could very well destroy America. A Republican party that is Democrat lite is not worthy of winning elections.
Are you serious??? You're just wrong. Even with the limitations you prescribe there's a million times more choice in our system than in a government run plan. By the way when you understand that profit is the best way (though imperfect) to bring forth fairness then you'll understand why we're conservatives and that we are pro good healthcare and pro the little guy.
Talk about an echo chamber. But, this article is really
repugnant.

He didn't win by a landslide… 47% of the voting nation did not vote for Obama. You will sorely be paying for this soon enough….
If Obama were a pro-life Republican, I’d thank Ann Coulter for converting him to Christianity.
cdw, the author of the article, John T. Simpson, is right above you in the thread. Did you actually read the whole thing and notice that? I think you are a Leftist Troll who needs to bring us some pie.
As far as the comments on this site, I find the overwhelming majority to be rational, fact based, and good humored. Of all the sites i have visited, Big Hollywood's contributors and commentors are some of the best. I am a history buff and I am constantly impressed by the knowledge of history displayed by many on Big Hollywood. Also, that many average Americans out there understand the Constitution and American's Founding Principles is very inspiring to me.
Loving America and loving the Movies is why I LOVE BH.
You said it, so I only have to second. The Al-Frankenstein Monster should be allowed nowhere near the Senate, but the Minnesotans who have most likely "elected" him should be allowed nowhere near a voting machine in the future. Perhaps he'll run for president in a few years with Krusty the Klown on his ticket.
Sideshow Bob would have a more coherent policy than Franken would. Crusty, I'm not seeing much of a difference really.
It seems to be a matter of perspective. Today most Americans would probably consider Specter, Snowe and Collins to be center-right and the remains of the Republican party (only 21% will now admit to that label) as essentially far right (DeMint, Limbaugh, Palin, Gingrich, Cantor, Steele, et al) or ineffectual (Boehner, McConnell).
They would also say that the Democratic party was center-left (Obama, Lieberman, Emmanuel, et al) and that the extremists (moveon.org, et al) were in the minority.
While government involvement in the financial and auto sectors may appear socialist, it was mandated by the failures of bush economic policies and the failures of those sectors to manage themselves, and it should be temporary.
It's interesting to see that so many consider themselves to be centrists and others to be extremists.
"This is a democracy after all."
You fire-breathing retard. You are a threat to everyone around you simply by drawing breath. Do you seriously believe this?
I challenge you here and now, and promise you one full month's pay from my occupation (a fairly substantial amount) if you can locate in the US Constitution the provision that creates a democracy in the United States. You will NOT find it. Nor will you find any provision within the Declaration of Independence justifying the creation of a democracy.
As for un-American policies, cite an example. If you do not support your asinine statements you forgo any claim to relevance in a political discussion. I'd suggest though that your government education has afforded you a minuscule enough knowledge about the federal system our Founding Fathers created to debate intelligently on the topic.
Now with respect to anti-American behavior, let's discuss a bow to the crown head of a foreign regime, failing to give response to another regime which conducted a missile test in defiance of UN directives (the same which has recently demanded apologies for condemnation of its tests with threats of nuclear and missile tests), spending at an unprecedented rate which threatens to send our deficit as a percentage of GDP to an unsustainable rate by the end of the next decade, and association with a known domestic terrorist. Once you have addressed these issues and have tried to explain how those are in any way "American" in nature we will proceed with the next round of issues.
I can do this all day.

Why? What's so wrong with examining from various angles to expose what is perceived as hypocrisy? Is this any more repugnant than Janeane Garofalo's characterization of Tea Partiers as racist rednecks or Anderson Cooper's sexual innuendos?

Auntie has a friend, how cute. Since we know Auntie can't make pie, and you're just a sidekick, would it be too much to ask for something really simple, a pop tart for example, or are you incapable of that too?
I regret that I did not recognize Mr Simpson as the author of the article until after I had replied to his comment. I did read most of his article, which I think exaggerates common misconceptions regarding media bias. You cannot determine bias solely from looking at favorable/unfavorable ratios; better performance should receive more favorable commentary.
Obama does receive somewhat favorable coverage because he is doing a much better job than his predecessor, who was often criticized because he was usually wrong (exporting jobs and technology, enriching China, negligent regulation, immense deficits, a failed economy, clumsy foreign policy, inattention to the strategic and financial costs of excessive dependence on foreign energy sources, among other things).
Are you serious, "Who's Francis?" Down thumb just for not knowing that.
But as to your actual point, well edge, dull edge at that, how exactly does the party help to craft or shape policy when the Democrats in Congress' idea of bi-partisanship is allowing a few Republicans in the room while they tell them to shut up and forget about having any input. Gee thanks for letting a couple in the room when you trash the entire party and ignore everything it says. Which adults are you talking about here? That one I'm actually seriously wanting to know the answer to.
Who would want to be a centrist? People in the middle of the road are the ones that get hit by traffic.
Indeed, there are some awesome people here. Hell thanks to Andrew and Lawhawk I've even revised my opinion that all lawyers need to be shot. They're the exceptions that prove the rule, but hey you know how it goes.
And of course some trolls. The trolls need to make with the pie soon too, I'm starting to get hungry again.
If Obama was a Republican he never would have tingled Chris Mathews' leg.
If Obama was a Republican Keith Olberman wouldn't be in love with him.
If Obama was a Republican he never would have been elected by the main stream media.
If Obama were a Republican, he would probably just be a law professor at some East Coast University where he had to hide his political opinions from his colleagues.
Odd, your name is antifacist – but you're a lefty…weird. Facists are leftists.
Anyway, that aside; hey dipstick, when is the left going to figure out that healthcare is not a right – it's a benefit, a privilage and always has been.
If you can't afford to have a doctor treat you – you get sick and you friggin' die and the world is better off because there is one less person in it.
@CDW – If you haven't seen the movie "Stripes" you wouldn't get it. SFC Hulka rules!
Francis was otherwise known as Psycho in 'Stripes.' Oh, and cdw, when the Republicans ruled supreme during the Bush II and Reagan eras, I could have declared the left wing dying, its massive protests against Reagan and Bush its death throes. Didn't turn out that way, did it? The GOP will evolve. Getting rid of RINO's like Specter is a very good start! So is everything Obama and the Congress are doing now. I expect major victories in 2010, just like in 1994. Oh, and again…

I think if the "Minnesotans" who didn't actually live in Minnesota had been kept from the voting machines, this might not even be an issue. However, the same goes for the :Ohioans" that voted for Ubama.
Or as my father used to say… a centrist politician is someone who doesn't have to lie as much to get people to believe what the politician want.s
John, I was shocked to see you left off any mention of the North Korean missile and the "Response".
Well it seems O's policies aren't particularly popular either. Just look at that CBS/NYTimes poll from the other day. Yes, his PERSONAL ratings are high, but check the internals and you will clearly see widespread dissatisfation with his policies.
Here's what your people running the show seem to not understand right now: The American Eagle has two wings: one is one the left and one is one the right. One is the wing of unrestrained government and high-flying ideals; the other is the wing of tradition and liberty and pulls to the right. When the wings work together, the Eagle flies to the middle without too much freedom leading to anarchy and without too much unchanging tradition leading to stagnation also without too much unrestrained government leading to tyranny and too much unrestrained change leading to the destruction of society through the implementation of poor ideas. Right now, the right wing is being stifled entirely.
No,fascists are rightwingers. Just because Goldberg wrote that book doesn't make it so. I'm sure you never heard of fascism until that book came out.

You can tell because of all the spaces that were used. Trippy.
Krusty would have Mr Teeny before he would Franken… “Franken- that hack? he was at the comedy club 6 years ago and stole my opening… the guy's meshug!”
makes sense; wasn't sure if it was an even more obscure code… you people are darn clever. So, pie it is!
You're waiting for the MSM to collapse so that it can be controlled by right-wing idealogues who only allow nice things to be said about conservatives and condemn dissent?
Sounds a lot like the totalitarian regime all far-righters dream of, where the wealthy get what they want, when they want, the middle class must stay in their place for fear of reprisal by the governmet, and the poor are kept in a government-mandated state of controlled poverty.
Does "1984" ring a bell?
Are you that far gone? What’s in it for you? Why do you love government so? As a free American how can this be? People in Sec:8 housing are there by choice, poverty is a choice in America, work 60 to 80 hrs. a week and anybody will become a success in the USA.
Boycott anything and everything with a leftist bent. The stupid MSM are messing their own beds, never a good idea to piss off people that actually have money to make a purchase. There advertisers are easy to find and let them know it.
Gotcha, Mark! Problem is, North Korea has been a minefield for every president since Truman. I used Roxana Saberi and Iran to make the point you indicated. Besides, Obama has caught hell even from the liberal media over the launch. The UK Guardian called Obama "The rabbit in North Korea's headlights." How can I top that? Done other pieces on that subject, BTW. But your comment was most welcome. You made a very valid point
srswart, Thank you! I could ask for no higher compliment. I know now my article was a smashing success! Got under your skin, did it? YAHOO!
Please feel free to come back anytime. Would love to see a lot more of you
If we're not worth your time, why are you two lovebirds posting here in the first place? Shouldn't you go scurrying off to DailyKos and laugh about how you got those evil right-wingers good?
Right, so a guy who votes for abortion rights, embryonic stem-cell research, only intermittently supported the war in Iraq and who voted for all this stimulus crap is supposed to be center-right. Forget what most Americans would consider Specter to be; the voting record is what decides if he's right-of-center, and he's not, just as Obama is in reality a leftist ideologue (and Lieberman would be just as bad if not for his support of the Iraq war)–there's nothing center-left about it. Anyway, since when was it so great to be a centrist? Show me a moderate and I'll show you someone who can't make up his or her mind.
Wow, the trolls are really coming out of the woodwork today. I think that media spoof blew their minds and they couldn't take it.
ooh.. i missed the "Rabbit" comment… I'm still sticking with the Guardian's other comment for him.. "President Pantywaist".
The hell you say, Billc. The last time I looked, it belonged to the citizens of the United States. PERIOD!
You do know "1984" was written as a warning against the repression of a left-wing totalitarian regime (left-wing totalitarian…now there's a redundancy), don't you? And why would right-wing extremists decrying big government suddenly turn around and call for a government regulated socioeconomic structure? (I think I know the answer, but I'll just wait and see if you can "enlighten" me.)
Now if only we could keep him from killing Bart…
If obama were a Republican, I'd have to seriously consider becoming a democrat. (and then commit seppuku)
Krusty is a republican….never happen…..

@ CDW
"Republicans castigate any clear thinkers……."
I suppose the thrust of that statement hinges upon your personal definition of a "free thinker". I might venture a guess and say that your definition is anyone who unquestionly follows the dictum of the liberal democrat constituency. There is a distinct difference between one who blindly accepts any pronouncement from those in high positions, be they political or philosophical, and one who hears, thinks, and then and only then, forms a cogent opinion. Just because you do not believe that any of the "thinkers" in the Rep/Conserv movement bear any credability does not make it so. Your statement is therefore fallicious. Name any five "thinkers" in lib/left politics or policy, and I'll match, and exceed, all of them. Be careful, you're against some pretty sav vy guys!
Sideshow Bob is also a republican. LONG LIVE KELSEY GRAMMER!!!!
http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Springfield_Republ...
Bingo on the war not being fought aggressively enough, dcase
Can we apply "freedom of choice " to schools as well?
Please list for me the criteria by which fascists are designated as political rightists.
Or more simply, answer me this: Aside from the genocide (giving you the benefit of the doubt), with what actual policies of Hitler's N*azi party do you disagree?
Would it be:
- The concept of a "living wage"?
- That all work should benefit the community, not the individual?
- The abolishment of "unearned income"?
- The abolishment of war profits?
- The nationalization of all trusts?
- The demand for profit-sharing in all industries?
- Generous old-age pensions?
- The communalization of stores?
- The expropriation of land for "common purposes"?
- The "maintenance of the middle-class"?
- Persecution of those detrimental to the "common welfare"?
- The abolishment of a "materialistic ordering of the world"?
- State organization of a cultural system, including State-funded education?
- The prohibition of juvenile labor, and compulsary health regimentation?
- The central authority of the State, and its "unconditional authority"?
- Or above all, the concept of "common good before individual good?"
Sounds like pretty boilerplate Left-wing ideals to me . . .
Very clever. All the idiocies JTS wants to mouth about the Prez he puts in the mouth of others under the pretext of engaging in a hypothetical scenario.
It is clever I admit but when JTS also gets to call for the assassination of the Prez and VP while engaging in this ploy it graduates from clever to diabolical.
Mr. Simpson, I'm sure you are very proud of your piece of satire and liken yourself to a modern day Twain. Yet, I cannot help but feel the juxtaposition and concentration of clearly delirious, outrageous and ignorant statements by the far left actually suggests you own latent irrational feelings. You, and your apologists will of course deny it. Though I can't help but wonder why you would feel your article successful based on it's rejection by a couple of readers and simple minded applaud of the rest of your audience. I suspect on that point — you are not being truthful. Then again; I'm guessing you've been praising yourself since you typed the last sentence. Now ask yourself. Why is that?
Wow Stan, are you really that naive? Have you ever been to Section 8 housing to ask the people there if they're there by choice? You'd get a rude awakening.
Believe me, government is nothing to love, it's an entity, a "necessary evil" as Thomas Paine once put it. But it should work for ALL the people not just be a tool of the rich (can someone say Wall Street)
Lastly, that 60 to 80 hours you talk about is a joke. Have you ever actually worked 60 or 80 hours? You sound like you leave work promptly a 5 p.m. and complain about doing overtime. I personally know people who work more than that at more than one job and are still struggling. When do they get a break?
Not that I've got anything against hard work and meeting a challenge, but I don't see why the working man has such a hard time seeing the fruits of his labor in this country. Leave it up to guys like you, and only the wealthy should have a say in this country's direction.
Perhaps you feel that only the rich should vote.
it was never really close; about 3 to one over pulling out…
Jae. I agree. JTS likely thought about this when he wrote the article. Perhaps the Secret Service should pay him a visit. Since he's asking for it.
Jae. I agree. JTS likely thought about this when he wrote the article. Perhaps the Secret Service should pay him a visit. Since he's asking for it.
Actually, srs, libtards are as easy to parody for me as Hitler was for Moe Howard and Charlie Chaplin. In fact, they BEG parody! Are you telling me KOS didn't say Bush engineered 9/11? Or Jeremiah Wright didn't accuse the Bush government of injecting black babies with AIDS? Or that Republicans are all racist? Turn on a TV! You guys are so outrageous, I have trouble deciding which outrages to choose from! I could have written a book here on all the deranged hatreds libtards have for righties! Now ask yourself. Why is that?
I know, T-Rav. Ain't that grand? Was the whole point, really. The truth hurts, doesn't it
Mr. Simpson, you and I both know that mockery is easy. Did someone on KOS say this and marginalized reverend say that. Sure — and fair minded people, President Obama included, rebuked them for those statements. Your straw man argument with a does of hyperbole is unlikely to convince anyone. Except of course those immune to common sense.
Boy! I REALLY got under your skin, huh, swarthy? This is AWESOME! You ever see the movie Private Parts? "Fans of Howard Stern listened to his show for 90 minutes on average. Most common reason given? They wanted to know what he was going to say next. Howard Stern haters listened to the show for an average of two hours and twenty minutes. Most common reason given? They wanted to know what he was going to say next!" Glad to be your Howard Stern, S! Hope to see you on my next BH post! And don't forget to visit our advertisers
Wow, that’s sweet Joe. Do you live in Sec. 8 housing?
A lot of experience with government there Joe. Can you say Community Reinvestment Act. Do you aspire to one day be a rising apparatchik in the Politburo?
I’ve been in business for almost 30 yrs, 60 hrs is a short week. You also have to work smart, and people concerned about breaks are generally losers. Breaks are real important to you, huh Joe?
Vote if you pay taxes. So, what’s in it for you Joe?
FYI, Dave, You may already know this, but 'wickedly funny and scary at the same time' is actually a screenwriting technique called comic relief. My two favorite examples are when Shrek and Fiona were fleeing the dragon for their lives in Shrek 1. FIONA: "You didn't slay the dragon?" SHREK: "It's on my to-do list!" My second favorite was from Sir Anthony Hopkins in HANNIBAL: "Bowels in or bowels out?" What do I do? Laugh or scream? Welcome to comic relief, D
I was speaking of Republicans so I would define clear thinking Republicans as those who do not blindly follow the dicta of right-wing orthodoxy. I agree that blindly accepting any pronouncement from those in high positions is a bad idea, whether the pronouncements be liberal or conservative; we should all think for ourselves and be willing to look beyond simple doctrines to see the real world consequences of theories that may sound good (eg, we have it on good authority that we should turn the other cheek but some of us suspect this may not work well in all cases).
I've not been making lists recently, but Obama is clearly offering better ideas than anyone else on either side and Paul Krugman and Robert Reich, to name two, have better ideas than anyone on the right. I realize this is my opinion and that you may not agree.
Fortunately, the nation recognizes that the right has failed and better ideas are now ascendant. It was the right, not the left, that put george w bush in office; it will take a long time to live that down.
LawhawkSF (just above) said "We do indeed want a center-right party."
Your middle of the road analogy is rather weak. Those in the middle of the road make much better progress than those in the ditch (on either side). A bird with one wing flies in circles, if at all.
If Specter voted to keep big government out of private family decisions and in favor of scientific research supported by Nancy Reagan, those would be libertarian votes, not left wing.
Many people not often called left wing, such as Neal Boortz and Bill O'Reilly, considered the Iraq war unwise.
While few people wanted to do the stimulus (letting the economy stall out), the alternative was worse. Taking the problem on and fighting back was more American than sitting on our hands waiting to see what would happen. The crash was a Republican (ie, bush) achievement; Obama had to clean up the mess he inherited.
Specter just voted against the budget and says he will oppose EFCA, positions that are more right than left.
Moderates are perfectly capable of making up their own minds. Indeed that is what they do. It is the left and right wing robots who march in step to an agenda set by others.
Thanks for the clarification, John.
I think the difference between the Dems then and the Rs now is that the Dems moved back to the center to expand their voter base while the Rs are trying to purge all centrists. They're down to 21% now and they've pretty much lost the Northeast. Between VA and ME they have three (of 24) senators; they'll probably lose NH in 2010 and they may drive the two ME senators away. Writing off the Northeast means they have to win two-thirds of the remaining seats just to break even.
The Rs lost in three of the four big states and they are losing Martinez in FL fivethirtyeight.com, which predicted the last election better than anyone else, shows that of the eight senate seats most likely to change hands in 2010, seven are now Republican; the eighth seat (#5 on the list) is held by Dodd in CT; that's a pretty blue state and he has 18 months to turn it around; even if Simmons wins, he is a moderate.
…continued…
I don't think the Rs realize how unattractive their hard core philosophy is to most Americans. Their strategy seems to rely on converting other people to their point of view rather than embracing the views of others. The results achieved by george w bush aren't helping them close the sale.
When the top receivers and running backs don't have the ball, they get down field and block for the guy that does have it; they don't wrap themselves around his ankle. To date, the Republicans have been trying to replace Obama's ideas with their own. America looked at the results of their ideas and voted for Obama. Instead of trying to block or obstruct progress, the Rs should look for ways to improve the policies that Obama is advancing, ways to have more impact, ways to avoid wasting money, ways to accomplish more with the resources available.
The last several presidents have failed to address problems like energy, health care and government waste and we are now paying a heavy price for their neglect. Those who are confronting the problems are the adults; those who are impeding them are not. One way or another, the adults must find a way to marginalize those who are trying to prevent us from solving these problems.
Specter's epiphany has provided Republicans with an opportunity to become participants. But this means they need to accept that they are no longer in charge and start making a contribution. If they fail to find a constructive role, their role will probably diminish.
Thanks to John, I have now seen the relevant clip.
I won't belabor your first two points, although I do find it amusing that Specter could be labeled as a libertarian. After all, he did just say he found his philosophy to be more in line with that of the Democrats than that of the Republicans, which these days is hardly a libertarian statement. As far as the economy goes, you're ruining what would otherwise be a rather plausible case with your special pleading. While it might be considered American to face a problem head-on, ever-expanding government intervention in the economy is generally not–at least, not traditionally. If you look at the historical record, there was no real intervention during economic downturns in America until the Great Depression, and they each lasted 2-3 years at most. Since the Depression, downturns have generally been longer. Therefore, it is at best dubious to claim that the alternative to the stimulus was worse, or that Obama was in fact "cleaning up" what he inherited.
Speaking of which, the roots of this particular recession go way back to the 1970s, with edicts from Washington (by liberal Democrats) that banks must provide loans to bad credit risks just because they were poor or minority. This policy came back to bite us all last year, as the spark that set off this whole collapse. The only thing Bush can be blamed for is the federal spending he pushed in response, something I and most other conservative Republicans criticized him for.
Now, as for your comments about moderates, I am an unabashed right-winger. I am not a robot. It might surprise you to know that I supported Clinton in '96 and Gore in 2000. Following 9/11 and some careful analysis of the arguments on a variety of fronts (social, economic, defense, etc.), I threw my support to the GOP and have been there ever since. Moderates are, as you say, capable of making up their own minds. They just don't, most of the time. Their entire position rests on triangulating between two positions, which is often quite useful; however, it frequently is done out of a wishy-washy sentiment which just wants to avoid debate, a useful part of the legislative process. I would much rather have these issues publicly thrashed out and find out where everyone stood on it than have a bunch of centrists cut off the discussion by providing a compromise deal that just gives us half of everything and let's be happy. I'm just sick of it.
cdw, the American people are starting to realize they bought a shiny apple that looked real nice from the outside, but is rotten and worm-infested inside. Happened with Clinton, too. That's why Dems lost the Congress in 1994, and will lose it again in 2010. Don't discount those half-million people that hit the streets less than 100 days in. A lot more stayed home. And I do believe a hardcore philosophy is preferable to most Americans than Obama taking shite from Daniel Ortega for fifty minutes without standing up for America AT ALL! IMHO. See what happens. I feel good right now. Glad Specter's gone, too. All the RINOs need to go.
Get over yourself anti-facist. Democrats found a charismatic multi-racial candidate who won a popularity contest against an old white guy. Oh boy, we can all feel good about ourselves as we go broke! Clinton and the Dems got spanked for over-reaching. And Clinton wasn't intent on creating a socialist worker paradise like this administration. We will see if all the uninformed trendies who showed up for Obama will do the same in 2010 mid-term for a bunch of crusty boring old donkeys without the annointed one as a drawing card.
I wasn't suggesting that Specter himself was libertarian, just that those two votes were. It is true, however, that many libertarians reject many conservative social positions (drug policy, school prayer, abortion, censorship, and other big government ideas).
Recent downturns may have been longer, but many things have changed. A deeper analysis is required. The economy is far more complex, more inter-connected, more abstracted, more international, etc. When economists, politicians and executives who cannot even measure unemployment in a meaningful way conduct experiments from whose consequences they have insulated themselves, they create havoc with the lives of those to whom they have shifted the risk.
Naive free market economics does not take greed into account and the result is often similar to a system of aerodynamics that ignores gravity. We created a financial community whose leaders had no concept or right and wrong, and we have seen the emergence of a class of executives (with some exceptions: Jobs, Gates, Dell, etc) who have sacrificed stockholders, customers and employees to their goal of maximizing their own compensation.
More likely culprits are the pyramids built on Wall Street and the policy of shipping American jobs overseas (while enriching our enemies in China and India).
There is a tendency for those on the right to blame American homeowners for the mortgage crisis where in reality many of those homeowners had good jobs that were sent away by pointy-haired bosses who did not understand what their employees were doing and were later forced to cancel projects that were staffed by people who didn't know what they were doing either.
The massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to an over-compensated class over the last three decades had much more to do with our current woes than hardworking Americans who sought the benefits of home ownership, something we were able to accommodate very well after WWII.
I may be incorrect, but it seems to me that their is a long list of compulsory beliefs for right wingers (probably for left wingers as well).
It is not true that moderates cannot make up their minds. What you mistake for indecision is their rejection of both extreme positions. They simply do not accept that all solutions must be extreme. They recognize the good sense of Aristotle's Doctrine of the Mean. They are capable of seeing both the merit and the flaws in ideas irrespective of their origins. They are strong enough to resist the pressures of orthodoxy.
Yes I'm surprised, as you may be to hear that I never voted for Clinton or Gore and to my shame did vote for bush in 2000 (it was time to flush the toilet). I was a Republican until 5 or 6 years ago when I realized the Republicans were screwing ordinary Americans and had no interest in solving any of our major domestic problems (energy, health care, unemployment, broadly based individual prosperity, etc).
Forgive the delay, I had to catch up on sleep and schoolwork.
Now, as I said before, your argument would be much more believable if you didn't coat it with a bunch of neo-Marxist crap. Of course the economy is too complex to be managed by a bunch of technocrats without serious repercussions in people's lives. But do you know what that sounds like a refutation of? Keynesian economics, the cornerstone of Obama's fiscal policy! You're also wrong in imagining that free market economics does not take greed into account. Read Adam Smith sometime; you'll find that he vehemently denounced the greed of capitalists. His economic theory was based on the assumption that, as regrettable as this greed was, there was no getting rid of it, and therefore it should instead be turned toward the common good, with a bunch of greedy capitalists competing against each other in the open market, thus reducing prices and improving services for all in an attempt to get customers. Sometimes greed really is good.
As for this talk about the political spectrum, of course there are some more or less standard beliefs for people on both sides. That's what marks them as being a left-winger, a right-winger, etc. Now, you give far too much credit to moderates. You obviously consider yourself one, so it makes sense you would credit them with having superior intelligence. Moreover, as I said, there are situations where compromise is a good thing. But not now, not when the debate over things like financial bailouts and such is rooted in fundamentally different political philosophies–namely, between a (classical) liberal and a statist view of the role of government. Should the government be closer to capitalism or to socialism?
It's a good debate to have, but you have to remember that, philosophically, there's no halfway ground on this. Either you view government interference in and occasional management of the economy as a good thing, or you don't. It's no use to say, as Specter would, "Okay, I support government interference, but only a little," because that still amounts to a legitimization of interference as a principle. You cannot support these things and still rightfully claim to be a defender of capitalism, which Obama, his cronies, and so-called moderates like Specter have tried to do.
I couldn't be happier how much libtards are freaking out over this. It's AWESOME! BTW that 'idiocy' was already mouthed by the left right at Bush. Notice the links? Can't handle it, huh, LOL! Also, I phoned in a security vulnerability I noticed to the Secret Service AFTER Obama's election! See, we right wing extremists don't want ANY of our presidents assassinated. Unlike some people. Right, Mike?
