I never really thought much about how that affects personal possessions, just vicitmization of people. I guess as long as it is on public display, that's better than some Nazi's heir hoarding it. However, I guess that leaves open the problem of which country should hold them, like the Elgin marbles controversy. But then, in art history, just about all of these issues are pretty messy. I remember a class I took that discussed the embarassing way the building of the Parthenon was funded. Should we knock it down because funds were misappropriated three millenia ago? There's often nothing so simple in life, unfortunately.

Reparations were made. Here is part of an article by Benedict Mokeiri on allafrica.com

'Nearly 200 years ago, America's fifth President, James Monroe, found himself facing a national crisis over the question of slavery to which descendants of the black race had long been subjected.

Owing to social pressure, these black slaves were getting freed, but where would they go? As a compromise, Monroe accepted that freed blacks could be repatriated to Africa.

Under the auspices of what was then called the American Colonization Society, several dozen former slaves arrived on Africa's west coast from America. They named their tiny stretch of land Liberia -"Land of the Free". To show their gratitude to the man behind this move, they named their capital city 'Monrovia'. They went further: They fashioned their constitution after the USA's and embraced virtually every aspect of the so-called "American dream" - freedom, democracy, prosperity, liberty'. http://allafrica.com/stories/200707261219.html

Reparation Plans are nothing more than an effort to further divide America. Once reparations for slavery are allowed how can any other reparations be denied. The world is full of injustices. The only answer is to remember and move on, something that even Martin Luther King advocated as he knew it was divisive.

Will the government pass the bill onto Europe which started the practice of slavery in the America's. How about asking Europe to pay the bill for liberating Europe in 2 World Wars. Taken to the extremes all non-native Americans should get on ships and move back to their ancestral home lands, Of course, the problem with that is they wouldn't take us back. Hail to the ultimate in stupidity - the US boat people.

John,

You replied to the wrong site. But I have replied and also reposted the comments on my blog Black entertainment USA.

Again I invite you to review all my posts on this subject, which likely covers every aspect of any objection you may have, and then ask any question of me you wish.

Thanks vic. This is precisely why I write fiction - if I go off on a tangent and nobody comprehends, they'll say the book sucks, and they won't buy it. Our friend, Jay continued his drive-by insights on almost every post on this thread, babbling on about unfair wages and sticking it to "the man." I can't tell you how many times I was abused by "the man", and failed, until I finally figured it out and became one. No hand outs, union help, just hard work and the willingness to better myself - the very spirit of free markets that is under attack.
...And Conyers is a douche bag.

I say just drop it and let's move on. Did anyone happen to see Dave Chapelle's parody on reparation's? Well it might have been a comical take on the behavior of blacks if they were to recieve them, but it was a very true one! I can roll an entire book of names of people who that money would not do anything for but make them even worse people than they are! Some of them will even end up dead. And let's not talk about the arrogance and false pride it would seperate us Black Americans with.... HUH? This really is a racist idea that was put into the heads of Black Americans just like the CIA put crack into our neighborhoods of Black Americans! Mental degradation? False hope because it will never happen... And that in itself is enough to cripple a race of people. All it is is another scheme being used by the ones who are in power to cause even more division among ALL people not just Blacks! Let's move on with our lives as God has allowed for us to live them. My Black people, God gave us a birth right of being the most visually diverse, genetically diverse, creative, beautiful, rock hard, people in the UNIVERSE! Let's take our lemons and make a Lmons and make one of grannies lemon pound cakes, put some Blue Bell ice cream on it, eat it and GLOAT for being who we are! Money comes and it goes but it does not make us who we are......

My ancestors were maid indentured servants on their own land because Cromwell killed half of them and gave the land to a Scottish Lord. Where's my reparations? I'll accept sterling pounds

Are African-Americans worse or better off than West Africans? Since, if their ancestors had not been slaves, they would still be West Africans. Should they be forced to pony up the difference in average income? Since they were generally enslaved by other Africans, should the descendants of those Africans pay reparations?

Slavery was noxious. It was also abolished almost 150 years ago. It is as silly to pay reparations now as it would be to charge African-Americans for their gain in not being West Africans.
