Will Hollywood Allow Us Heroes Again?
by John Scott LewinskiThe new Stephen Sommers-directed G.I. Joe movie headed to theaters this summer kicked the U.S.A. out of the bunker and put “The Real American Hero” under international command. The thinking at the time by Hollywood execs held that the U.S. was hated by the rest of the world and could no longer be seen as heroic.
Superman Returns screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris shortened Superman’s call to arms to just “Truth and Justice” because “The American Way” was supposedly not worth fighting for anymore. They then proceeded to transform The Man of Steel into a simpering, self-absorbed drama queen.
Why has Hollywood worked so diligently to remove well-focused, admirable heroes from American movies? The primary reason was George W. Bush’s presence in the White House and the primary focus of his administration — the war against Islamic militants.
To the hard left in Hollywood, 9/11 and subsequent struggles in Afghanistan and Iraq were caused by the U.S. The bad guys had no say in the matter and were merely reacting to circumstances thrust upon them by Uncle Sam. Naturally enough, fighting terrorists anywhere on the planet merely added to America’s crimes.
That astoundingly naive world view grows out of the primary philosophy of anyone on that hard left: “The strong are always bad, and the weak are always good.” Morality and philosophy play no part in this global vision. If A has more than B, A is evil. B could lie, cheat, steal or fly commercial airliners into skyscrapers, and it’s all justified because simple math unveils inequities.
If you impose this philosophy onto movie stories, you can see how difficult it is to create compelling bad guys for movies. If no one in a weakened social or political position can ever do anything wrong, all you have left is wealthy, Western business men to plot society’s downfall — and that’s who perpetrated most of the foul deeds in movies during the Bush years. That leaves a rich cesspool of villainy untapped. But, once you admit that there’s evil in the world that must be fought in your movies, it becomes that much more hypocritical to rail against the war in Iraq at your next yoga class or macrobiotics party. Hollywood painted itself into a corner from where it couldn’t admit to the existence of evil and maintain its political stance.
Unfortunately, when you remove compelling villains from stories, you take the teeth out of our cinematic heroes. Offer a hero no truly dastardly deeds to fend off and no evil foe to battle, and you give an audience less to invest in and enjoy. We’re left with the one perfect hero for the anti-Bush era, Jason Bourne. Think about it. He’s poor. He’s sick. He battles middle-aged white men in Washington. And, his one great desire in life isn’t to defend the innocent or fight for justice — it’s to be left alone to his own brooding self-absorption. Sure, those movies made money — since audiences were starving for anything resembling a true hero.
Then, a strange thing happened as Bush was headed out the door in 2008. Heroes made a massive comeback as Iron Man, The Dark Knight and Gran Torino featured men sacrificing their own comfort and desires to fight genuinely evil men. They didn’t sit around contemplating the inequities of Western culture or exploring their feelings. They risked their safety to fight threats to the innocent — and only Iron Man featured a remnant of the “evil rich guy” villain (Jeff Bridges).
More importantly, these movies were successful — in the case of Dark Knight, immensely successful. And Dark Knight had the audacity to make all that money while including Michael Caine’s seminal, “Some men just want to watch the world burn…” speech (thus far, the most perfect dramatic explanation of why we’re fighting terrorists across the globe).
Hopefully, the success of these films will shake Hollywood out of its navel-gazing, passive-aggressive political statements and force it to present some interesting heroes and heroines again. Audiences crave them. And, since a Democrat is president and it’s safe for Hollywood to support America’s wars again, there’s reason to hope for such a comeback.

As far as GI Joe is concerned, one wonders how many of these people in charge of making the movies ever played soldier. Being brought up on Barney instead of Sgt Rock has to be a cathartically emasculating experience. But it put them in a position to understand their feminine side ( maybe a little experimenting), appreciate feng shui, and buy into moral and cultural relativism. The cocaine probably confirmed it . And in a late night discussion ( they always call them that, regardless of how many people are or aren't there ) relativism sures beat responding to logic.
As someone old enough, yet young enough to have had a GI Joe- mine was the first model with full WW11 battle regalia including M-1 Garand rifle… it's still around somewhere wearing his scuba suit. Over the years the toymakers
fiddled with the action icon and tried to take the US military connection away; remember the kung fu grip?
So, it comes as little surprise something called 'G.I. Joe' has nothing to do with real G.I.'s. And it is profoundly sad, because think of the little guys out there whose dads (and moms) are away doing their third tour but somehow making acceptable action figures out of them is politically incorrect as well as unmarketable. This movie will come and go with little or no cultural significance.
This will not let up. The 'one worlders' out there despise US 'exceptionalism', and the world's greatest combat force
is emblematic of such. That is, of course, until their unrealistic idealism gets them into another scrape.
And who are they gonna call?
The film version of G.I. Joe isn't based on the version from the 1960s, it's based on the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra line of action figures that was introduced in 1982. G.I. Joe is more military fantasy now and has been for more than 25 years.
Two more movies (GI Joe and Superman) I won't be seeing. Unless we make them pay in the wallet they won't ever listen to us.
My husband told me that the "International" re-visioning of GI Joe has been scrapped to go back towards the original source material. In other words, I think GI Joe is American again.
so true… and so sad. one suspects a poitically expedient motive to it, just like Nick Fury- starring the overexposed Samuel Jackson is not going to be th 'Howling Commandos' but the lame 'Agent of Shield'
stuff. Sure it's part of the iconography, but once again not pro U.S….
You can't pay me enough money to see GI Joe unless some one I trust goes and tells me that Real American hero is in the movie. GI Joe was born out of the World War 2 soldiers. Our guys in uniform right now are GI Joes. For crying out loud why the heck do these twits in Hollywood have to push their own sordid bs views into places their views don't belong. If they want to have their own upside down amoral mythology I invite them to make up their own. Instead they go out of their way to deconstruct what is right. One wonders were all of these idiots skinny losers who were stuffed into gym lockers in high school? Are the guys celebrated in culture like the John Wayne's, Clint Eastwoods etc. that threatening to these people that tehy have to foist Matt Damon on us as our ace of spies? PULEESE! The fact that these people waited to give us what we wanted is proof positive they put their ridiculous naive politics ahead of what makes good story telling. This deconstruction of celebrated cultural mythology is what killed Rome and Greece. Time it stopped now.
You guys seriously need to research G.I. Joe vs. Cobra. You have no idea what you're talking about.
I'll be skipping GI Joe. It just looks bad in general. The teaser trailer is a typical modern action movie CGI fest. Cobra Commander is being played by the kid from "Third Rock from the Sun." Marlon "White Chicks" Wayans is playing one of the Joes. The female Joes are being played by models turned actresses. And the team is going to be an international one because, as we all know, if there's one dream shared by the British SAS, Russian Spetsnaz, and German Kommando Spezialkräfte it's a desire to be confused with American GIs. All signs point to Fail.
Politically motivated? The G.I. Joe vs. Cobra line has lasted longer than any other incarnation of the Hasbro G.I. Joe brand. It has a backstory and multiple characters that lend themselves to film.
Yeah, GI Joe. All press canceled for ShoWest. I wonder why…
I think the Studio's PR department is already out enforce. Sighhhhhhh. I really don't like being told what I should and shouldn't like by someone who didn't grow up with the cartoons. GI Joe is part of cultural mythology, the icon of the American soldier and pop culture. The fact they changed it and there rumors with no serious factual evidence that they went back and redid the thing makes me and many others highly suspicious.
Two things:
1. The classic GI Joes are still available, they just don't have any underlying story; the other toy line did.
2. Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., is almost as old as the Howling Commandos stories, and for years, both series were published at the same time. Readers had written in to Marvel asking what Fury was doing in the present, so Stan Lee created the Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. stories to satisfy them and cash in on the 1960s spy craze.
I fail to see how either of these things aren't pro-U.S. The small G.I. Joe toyline is still "A Real American Hero", and S.H.I.E.L.D. is an American agency, albeit a fictional one.
[...] Hollywood Killed the American Hero March 12, 2009 Posted by Jehuda in Uncategorized. Tags: Entertainment, Film, media bias, News, Politics, The Arts, TV trackback At Big Hollywood: Will Hollywood Allow Us Heroes Again? [...]
Have you ever wondered why the present Hollywood elite hate the US military? None of them have ever served their nation in any way and the Men and Women in the service have shown they have the courage to go into harms way to protect this nation and the people they love. Few of the boys and girls in Hollywood have ever been there or shown this courage. They are jealous of these Men and Women that serve. A few of them go do shows and I thank them, but Bob Hope and his people did shows where the bombs were going off and the bullets were flying. Back then Hollywood believed in freedom and this country. They even had a USO the biggest stars would go to talk with the troops and let them know they cared. Is that still around?

Well come on Lon! take us to School us! What in the "Back story" will take this from being just another crapy film into something heroic and worth watching
A team of military specialists fighting a terrorist organization.
If you want to blame something blame Star Wars for changing the way toys and action figures are produced. That's why G.I. Joe shrank morphed into an elite team of different characters to fight an evil team of different characters.
G.I. Joe was what a lot of those 80's kids grew up with…and COBRA was the primary enemy. 'Joe was and must always be American, and american only. If they want to make 'Joe international, then turn to Tom Clancy and his Rainbow 6 group. They are international. Leave 'Joe alone; they are profoundly AMERICAN and AMERICAN only (except Zartan, he was some deranged redneck-hillbilly-chimpkilling-backwoods-KKK-change-color freak from the lost hills of Kentucky…now how many INTERNATIONAL figures are you going to be able to find that have all that associated with them? hmm, redneck-japanese….backwoods-french…yeah, doesn't exist except in good ol' USA!)
Another great example of Hollywood's unwillingness to see evil is the Vampire V. Werewolf saga UNDERWORLD. Even Kate Beckinsale in tight black leather couldn't save those films. The bad guys in that picture shifted so many times that at the end the only people you hate more than the vampires AND the werewolves is whoever wrote and produced the crap.
I'm glad the hero is back. So far Liam Neeson in TAKEN is my favorite this year, but I still have hope that whoever that alien dude that's in the STAR TREK trailer will destroy the UN chartered Enterprise, revealing the final twist that the whole thing was a parallel universe, or perhaps the fevered dream of an aging Bob Newhart.
*Playing the GI Joe theme song on my mp3 player*
"G.I. Joe is the codename for America's daring, highly trained, special mission force.
Its purpose: To defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world."
If the people making this movie have any balls at all, they'll stay true to the roots. Heck, from what I remember from the tv show, COBRAs minions all wore masks or helmets that covered their whole face, and had desert hideouts. It should be a stretch to put 2 and 2 together and get "Allegory."

Classic GI Joe didn't need a 'story'.. He kicked butt and left the bad guys dead
PS: The cartoon/hasbro 3" figures had nothing on the 12" action figures that we went out and had "Seal Hunting Bad Guys".. we made our own stories (and usually ended up in fistfights afterwards )
How can anyone mention heroes and not include Team America! Seriously, I never got into the GI Joe thing once they miniaturized them, but I do assume that having a multicultural metrosexual Commander in Chief will bring a return of Hollywood 'Patriotism' like never before. Only "Simper Fi" will replace "Semper Fi".
it was more about expediency than pure ideology- these are safer alternatives, at least to the PC crowd…
Wolfman, why are you complaining, the Lycans (werewolves) ended up being the "good" guys!?
I liked Underworld, no small thanks to Beckinsale's outfit. Ditto the sequel, though the writers didn't seem to know what to do with the super-hybrid. The third prequel, sans Beckinsale, was a mess. Beckinsale proved herself to be a libtard, but she sure looks good in those outfits.
Mr Mark's got his game face on… we knew the 'backstory'- it was "C'mon men! Take that hill!"
yeah, some of the squabbles were settled on the field of honor. He knows what that means, too…

Remember this?
that's "It shoudn't be a stretch.
The omission of "The American Way" In Superman Returns sickens me. The film, however, had strong Christian imagery, and was bent on showing the importance of the individual. It even froze a shot on the Daily Planet's cover of the day the Berlin Wall fell, and showed Superman holding the globe on his shoulders before "shrugging" it off.
As for G.I. Joe: I grew up on the Larry Hama/Marvel comics, which had many conservative elements to them. In one issue, a convenience-store owner monologues about the evils of gun control.
The dropping of the "Real American Hero" from the film is hard to swallow, but at least the Joes are still an American special-forces unit.
So, is it safe to assume that we're looking at a "Megaforce" re-make with more marketable branding?
Thanks for an excellent article, though I certainly feel like there's much more ground to be covered yet on this topic. I've recently gotten into several discussions with friends about how bored I am with all the movies featuring anti-heroes. I just have no interest in films where the main characters are so deplorable that I am unable to sympathize with them. I don't mean I expect flawless goody-two-shoes, but who really wants to root for the most pathetic examples of humanity? Why can't movies feature characters to whose traits we should aspire? It's infuriating, even more so if you're looking for decent heroines, as truly strong female characters are far and few-between. In fact, I think the only good heroine I've seen in any movie in the last few years was Queen Gorgo in 300 – that chick was AWESOME. I wanna be her. I do not want to be the characters featured in such things as "Sex and the City." No thank you.
So you mean, it's like the US Military vs. Islamic-Fascist. Only in this version, nobody gets killed. Right?
What Tripe!
No it's based on G.I. Joe vs. Cobra.
The mini-versions were the only ones I'm old enough to know, actually, and I had a good collection that I wish I'd held on to, for the nostalgia. (Same with my original Kenner SW stuff and Battlestar Galactica geegaws. My Cylons actually fired torpedoes, before they sold future editions with the torps glued into the launchers so nobody could rig them to shoot twigs or rocks at each other.)
Funny true story – I usually used them to play football, rather than war, and that was BEFORE William "the Fridge" Perry got his own mini-Joe figure. Destro's helmet was the football. Snake Eyes could shed tacklers in a way to make Lombardi himself shed a manly tear.
Lon,
The 1982 version…heck all versions have been as American as Apple Pie, even the theme song boomed "GI Joe a real American hero" and the credits always ended with all of the characters standing in front of a fluttering American flag. Yes it is military fantasy undoubtedly but it has always been American-centric but now I imagine we'll get some politically correct "international" casting. It's just lame that Hollywood feels a need to destroy everything even remotely American.
Lon,
What are we wrong on? GI Joe "The Real American Hero" is what this is based off of which is what most of us grew up with. It would be a different matter if they were basing it off the uber lame and utterly ignored GI Joe Sigma series.
Personally I think they need to break out the GI Joe Vs Transformers like Marvel did back in the 80's. Maybe in a sequel.
Holy crap!! Apparently not only is GI Joe not an American group anymore but apparently they are located in Europe. Look at this garbage:
Directed by Stephen Sommers the movie centres around a unit of special operatives located out of Brussels known as G.I.JOE which stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity. The JOE's take on COBRA, an evil organization led by the notorious Cobra Commander.
That is a heaping pile of bovine scatology if I've ever seen one. Commie-wood has apparently decided to cut America out all together.
I keep seeing posts referencing WWII, the original action figure, comments about the REAL military, etc. It seems like a lot people don't realize that G.I. Joe is now supersuits (which will be in the movie), science fiction and stunts. I'm against "internationalizing" it as much as anyone but it seems like people are making other criticisms when the things they are criticizing have been around for more than 25 years.
Hasbro debunked that ages ago in a statement:
"Message to G.I Joe Fans
Hasbro’s G.I. Joe Team wanted to take this opportunity to clarify some of the facts regarding the G.I. Joe live-action movie that we are developing with Paramount Pictures.
First and foremost, we are not changing what the G.I. Joe brand is about. The name “G.I. Joe” will always be synonymous with bravery and heroism.
The G.I. Joe brand has enjoyed a successful 43-year history, spanning two key generations. The first was the line of 12-inch “realistic military” figures that were popular with kids in the 1960s and 1970s.
The second generation, was created in 1982, and is based on a cast of fictional heroes and villains that make up the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” fantasy. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their “fight for freedom wherever there is trouble” against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series.
This movie will be a modern telling of the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the “Pit” as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.
G.I. Joe is a very important property to Hasbro and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiasm. Without all of you, the brand would not be where it is today.
Thank you."
Then why did the 12" line die in the mid-1970s only to be born again stronger with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra line? The answer: Star Wars
The international casting won't be the result of political correctness, it's the result of the casting directors being unable to find a single American actor who doesn't look like a f__king wuss.
We can only hope.
Well, nobody ever said supersuits, science fiction and stunts can't be patriotic.
I concur. Superman's not a global character. As the Elseworlds comic Red Son points out, Kalel would have turned out completely different if he'd landed somewhere else. Being raised by Americans tends to have an effect on you.
Define "Stronger"
More kiddified maybe… but stronger? NEva!!
More than 25 years of continuous sales, multiple comic book series, two animated TV series, an animated movie, several direct to DVD animated movies, a soon-to-be-released live action movie, other merchandise besides toys, like statues, lunchboxes, apparel, etc., devoted collecting community, conventions.
Most of Hollywood has been trying tokill American exceptionalism for years. They have been telling us for a long time that everyone in the world has a right to be proud of their culture, except Americans. American culture has been deconstructed by Hollywood to point out only the bad , never the good points. All cultures have good & bad, but according to Hollywood, America is always at fault.
Absolutely right about "truth, justice, and all that stuff" as it was so obnoxiously put. You were wrong about Superman being a drama queen. The "drama" part was unnecessary verbiage. The franchise I'm thinking about is "Mission Impossible." On TV, it was smart, clever, brave agents risking their lives and their very existence to stop evil worldwide.
By the time we got to the movies, we ended up with a pretty boy cult member who can't act as the star, fighting the very people who had been the Mission Impossible team and its leaders. And how did it come to this? Well, in the producers' and writers' liberal minds, the secret war against the threat of communism and international terror was phony, and when the Team ran out of phony communists and terrorists to fight, where else could they turn except to becoming criminals and terrorists themselves. Aw, ptooey! So for GI Joe, I'll wait to see what the New York and L.A. Times critics have to say about it, and assume the opposite is true.
Lon,
I've seen that statement from back in 2007 but things from as recent as 2/21/2009 are saying otherwise and that it will be based in Brussels and stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity as opposed to being an abbreviation meant to represent the American soldier. I'm hoping you're right though Lon and hoping they are true to their word.
Though this still doesn't explain the casting of Marlon Waynes…nothing could justify that.
Yeah I don't agree with Marlon Wayans either.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1046173/synopsis
according to this, they got enough Negative responses that "GiJoe is once again "A real american hero", not an international UN type organization according to Hasbro-"
"Navel gazing?" I think they dived in.
Your piece is speaking directly to me and many others who not only want to see these type of stories, but who are working on them.
'Throw them into the fire they started.' – Pigman, the jihad's worst nightmare.
No one in Hollywood ever played soldier, or airman, or sailor, or Marine. The evidence is there for anyoen to see. Just watch any "military" movie and wait for the first salute. There's the proof.
SO true! I watched a film the other night called "The Hiding Place" about Corrie tenBoom and her family's story of hiding Jews in a secret hideaway in their home during WW2, getting caught by the Nazis, carted off the Ravensbruck concentration camp, most of the family dying for their honor of protecting life, and then only Corrie being left alive to hear the excitement in the camp that the YANKS were on their way! Indeed, who is the world going to call when evil facsists are on the loose? America is the last great hope for truth, justice and THE AMERICAN WAY. We used to be the protectors of all that was right and good. Thanks to the libs for destroying our reputation in the world.
"That astoundingly naive world view grows out of the primary philosophy of anyone on that hard left"…naw, that view comes from reading history books. Give it a try sometime.
That's less a commentary on the merits of the older GI Joe line than on the power of Saturday morning marketing.
I had several GI Joes in the 1970s. I remember being disappointed one Christmas at not getting the offical obstacle course set; one of my brothers helped me make my own with a big piece of cardboard, markers, kite string, Lincoln Logs, and an Erector Set.
Not only are most of today's Hollywood "stars" sniveling liberals but none of them deserve to do anything but kneel in the memory of many of Hollywood stars of the 30's,40's and 50's. Eddie Albert EARNED a Bronze Star at Tarawa, Gable and Stewart and others that flew combat missions in Europe and were among the many that contributed to the war effort. Todays pampered posers are but a thin, pasty imitation of the real men and real stars of days gone by.
Thomas – back then Hollywood appreciated that those folks kept them safe and free – and they repaid them by bringing happiness and a taste of home to boost their spirits. Nowadays Hollywood (like much else around us) is the product of people who have spent their entire lives dodging responsibility, encouraging professional victimhood, and declaring everything to be Someone Else's Fault. The military operates on a bedrock of everything alien to this mindset: accountability, and truly shouldering other people's burdens.
That's also why their rejection is so puerile and emotional – these poor overgrown middle-schoolers have never learned how to stake a position and argue it from evidence and reasoning. Bellyfeel is all they've got.
And THANK YOU for your service, Sir. We must never forget, no matter what our self-styled "cultural elite" tell us.
very interesting points, all- as someone who was playing with the real things when COBRA was the bad guy, perhaps my take is somewhat dated. Still, why 'international'? Listen I'll keep my powder dry until the film comes out but have little hope that it will be anything other than PC dreck. And I do not recall 'Nick Fury doing dual duty- by the late 60's all comics started moving away from WW11 themed stuff. All I know is Ahnold, and then Bruce Willis were going to do the 'Howling Commando' thing- and Baywatch boy has already done 'S.H.I.E.L.D….
Good call–history books are becoming increasingly agenda-driven.
I felt the Same here, about the omission of 'The American Way' in Superman Returns. Their need to not have it in the film was excused by them because in their mind, Superman is a 'global character'. Really. He crash lands in America, lives in America, works in America, loves an American woman, etc., etc.
looks like another movie that has been pimped to the democrat wussy tastes
and another that I will not be wasting my money on
Did any of thesse jerks making these new movies in hollyweed ever listen to any real patriotic songs like STARS AND STRIPES FORVER,STAR SPANGLED BANNER,YANKY DOODLE DANDY,DIXIE, or were they too busy getting their minds turned to mush listening to crap like AGE OF AQUARIUS,MUSKSRAT LOVE,DOG AND BUTTERFLY,LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS,WINDMILLS OF THE MIND and other hippy freak songs SCREW THEM they skipped watching JOHN WAYE movies to watch PEE WEES BIG ADENTURE
I know there are many people who want to politicize the removal of the term, but back in the '40s Superman cartoons, the opening says he fights for "Truth and Justice", no mention of "the American Way" even in the midst of WWII. It came later, I'm not sure exactly when. Then the phrase "American Way" was omitted again many years later ('70s or '80s?) as a corporate decision. I don't know the exact reasons why, but I assume it was 1) A desire not to alienate overseas audiences 2) a decision to make Superman less "parochial." After all, as someone who has traveled through the depths of space and time undoubtably has seen civilizations both better and worse than the U.S.
As for Red Son, didn't Kal El, at the end, rebel against the U.S.S.R. when he became aware of the atrocities they were committing? Seems the point to me was that he wasn't completely different, but held true to the values of "truth and justice" despite his upbringing.
Oh, and I thought Superman Returns was an awful film as well. I don't think "Superman 90210" held any particular values, and the idea of him having a child was just ludicrous.
I am reminded of the scene in BAND OF BROTHERS when the C-47's are taking off for Normandy. The thought that occured to me and brought tears to my eyes was "The Americans are coming" It was a mantra that was repeated in Europe and Asia for the next year. And when these ungrateful asshats have thier backs against the wall with Islam, they'll repeat it again. And we will come. Because that's who we are.
Americans.
Here's a thought… movies are made to turn a profit. Do you guys think movies gross more money here in the US or more everywhere else on the entire planet? It should be obvious as to why they made them an international fighting force. Some people would just rather just scream out O'Reilly talking points because labeling and attacking an entire sect of people is so much easier than applying the slightest bit of logic to the situation.
Personally, I think the term "Hero" has been cheapened. It seems that all you have to do to be a (military) hero today is to just join the military. Then if you are accidentally killed you may even get a medal. It cheapens it for the True Heros!
Google "Sgt Buddy James Hughie" and see our true American Hero.
http://mssc54.wordpress.com/our-american-hero/
This article makes stupid connections that offer up really crappy pro- Iraq War reasons. Lame.
Well then why isn't every film made in Chinese then since they have more money and people than any other place? Your argument is missing the point. They took an American fighting unit (GI Joe) and took the American out of it. Snake Eyes is now French. It is just not acceptable. Hollywood is ashamed of America, and they prove it in their actions.
the 80's — My (female) cousin still goes by Jinx in certain circles & married a guy who'd been "Snake Eyes" as a kid. After school cartoon Joes were GREAT! Def. American and patriotic… Duke was WAY cool! And knowing's half the battle…
[...] has “inherited” Iraq and Afghanistan. Big Hollywood’s John Scott Lewinski notes that “since a Democrat is president and it’s safe for Hollywood to support America’s wars [...]
Ken,
According to your theory, The Dark Knight should have flopped since Bruce Wayne's butler is the only character not born in the USA. Yet, the global box office of the latest Batflick eclipsed that of every other 2008 movie. Iron Man and Indiana Jones 4 also did extremely well despite having American heroes and being steeped in American culture.
So, an unapologetically American GI Joe flick can make a major profit overseas as well as in the States. It's only liberal Hollywood that can't seem to accept this truth.
I should have identified myself as "Fred2," not to be confused with the other Fred.
I read Aussie writer Stuart Beattie's screenplay for G.I.Joe, in which nearly all the heroes were non-Americans. "Snake Eyes" was French (!), "Breaker" was Mediterranean/Arabic, and Marlon Wayans' "Ripcord" was the wisecracking hero who won Scarlett's heart. The team's Pit HQ was buried under Egyptian sand.
Although the character names matched the 1980s characters, all of the details had been bastardized thanks to left-limo ass-dweeb producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Doom, Constantine) who insisted that the original Cobra terrorist organization was too silly and "stupid" and therefore needed to be re-invented by Hollywood experts.
Director Stephen Sommers (Van Helsing) spent $175mil, yet thus far the released Joe footage is embarassing – Snake Eyes has rubber lips, Storm Shadow's dressed like a DJ cowboy, and Duke's cyborgish exoskeletal powersuit looks like a plastic RoboCop Halloween costume. Dennis Quaid said in an interview that his version of Hawk is akin to a Hugh Hefner version of Chuck Yeager. Channing Tatum initially refused the Duke role because he didn't want to participate in a movie glorifying war (after enthusiastically starring in the unrealistic anti-military agitprop "Stop-Loss" costarring Joseph Gordon Levitt).
The toys from the Joe movie were previewed last month at the NY Toy Fair and looked as chintzy as the 1993 era Eco Warrior line. In order to pacify fans, Paramount paid Larry Hama to endorse the film, but i haven't heard what if any changes were made from Beattie's script. The new toy Pit is a greenish gray RV/boat-looking carrycase.
Lon, you seem to have some reason for promoting the bastardization of G.I. Joe as a Saturday morning cartoon, toy line, etc. Exactly why is it important to you? To me, removing America from G.I. Joe has always been insulting.
Apparently, America and its Constitution are not worth preserving? The original G.I. Joe was unapologetically about AMERICA. Just because Hasbro decided back in the eighties to water down its focus on America in order to appeal to the foreign television market doesn't make it any more acceptable to me.
When I had originally read about the U.N.ization of the G.I. Joe brand in the upcoming movie, I wrote to Hasbro. I let them know I would not be watching the movie, nor would I be buying anymore of its products because of the insulting revamp.
Now, on this forum, I'm reading that Hasbro is not going that route. Bully for them. I don't know if public pressure influenced this decision, or if they were ever really going to go the Euro_Weenie route to begin with. Either way, they can keep their re-branded version of G.I. Joe.
As for the latest Superman movie, I was pissed that the line was changed to "Truth, justice, and… all that other stuff." WTF?
Those hollyweird hacks that turned Superman into supermetrosexual did bastardize that "Truth, Justice.." into that casual toss aside. But I recently rented out the classic Max Fleischer animation films of Superman and noticed that the lead in for introducing Superman was only Truth and Justice.
I'm guessing that "The American way" must of been introduced for the tv shows or comic books, but the first filmed Hollywood production of Superman was the animation shorts. I'm satisfied with just that, because he stood for what was truly important. Being an American tops the cake too.
And I always knew in my heart that the Cobra captured in every episode where taken to a remote island and waterboarded for info!…
I kid! I kid.. they're probably just gunned down off camera while a Joe explains to the little kiddies what lessons they've all learned that day.

Please Hollywood do not make a Sgt Rock movie, I don't think I could stand it. Just leave him alone and untarnished.
