My Obligatory Inauguration Obama-is-Great Post (And Why He is)
by John RidleyConsidering all the price gouging going on with hotel rooms in DC, Obama’s inauguration is apparently history in the making. But as we observe this epic, monumental, never-been-done-before achievement, what exactly are we celebrating? If Toni Morrison is to be believed, William Jefferson Clinton “white skin notwithstanding,” was our first black President. As Morrison’s got both a Nobel and a Pulitzer, I for one am not going to argue with her. And Obama, being bi-racial, is only black in the strictest sense.
It’s not even correct to say that Obama is the first minority to hold the highest office in the land. Every white guy ever elected is co-owner of that distinction. As far back as the first census in 1790 white men were just 41 percent of the population and have been trending downward ever since (thirty-two percent in 2007).
So, if it’s not really about race or minority status, maybe the big deal we feel churning in our collective guts is something as bold as this: that Barack Obama is our first truly American president.
Can you have a heritage more American than Obama’s? The literal marriage of the immigrant and native. Born in our most diverse state. One without an ethnic majority, but where people of mixed race make up some 20% of the total population. There is nothing about Obama’s background that isn’t truth to the tired saw of the American melting pot.
And can you have a narrativea more American than Obama’s? In the most Horatio Algeresque fashion he lifted himself up from a swamp of food stamps, went on to study at the best universities. Despite his Ivy League pedigree, Obama skips his shot at easy millions, becomes one of those much maligned “do nothing” community organizers, bucks the system, fights the old school and ends up president. Hey-day Frank Capra couldn’t commit to film a more finely tuned ode to Yankee gumption.
And would it have been possible to have had an election more American than Obama’s? One that put the exclamation point on our long, slow crawl to civil rights. Not arrived to – as in decades and centuries past – through the righteousness of passive resistance, the threat of violence or the lever of those darn “activist” judges. It was just people by their own free will choosing to shut out the white noise of racial bias and flip the switch for the person they thought was the best for the job. Surely that’s as American as mom’s apple pie or dad’s buddies buying you a baseball team.
Every president to hold office has espoused some version of Americanism; the truths that we hold self-evident, even when those truths are not always in evidence. But for all their grand rhetoric and mostly good deeds, none was able to seal the deal on the trifecta of equality, plurality and socioeconomic ascendancy. Obama has. Obama is the more perfect union. He is a house united. Obama is the New Generation and the hot light of a dawn that goes way beyond clever talk of morning in America.
Quite simply, quite plainly, just by virtue of his being, Obama is America. The first true American to lead our nation.

“Quite simply, quite plainly, just by virtue of his being, Obama is America. The first true American to lead our nation.”
Quite simply, quite plainly, the most stupid sentence written in the short history of this site.
Wow…the lever of “activist” judges is somehow an agent of progress and change? And to say with such confidence and conviction. This is gonna be a loooooooooong 4 years.
John,
Glad you’re enthused, but will you guys please stop acting like the front row of the Ed Sullivan show when the Beatles first performed? Obama is a POLITICIAN. I know you think he’s so much more, but when you type ridiculous stuff like “the first true American to lead our nation”, it gives credence to the notion that you guys represent a cult and think of this politician as the black Jesus.
I have high hopes for our new Prez & our nation. Notsomuch for his Tiger-Beat followers in the media, who are downright ignorable.
BTW, a “true American” would’ve gotten up and left Trinity Baptist church when the reverand went off on an anti-American screed. Just sayin’. Put down the kool-aid.
Drivel. Did I accidentally hit Huffington Post on my way to Big Hollywood?
So, um, the previous 43 presidents weren’t “true” Americans?? What utter poppycock.
I hope you someday look back on what you wrote and realize not only how silly it is, but also how highly offensive and insulting.
Of course, Ridley did forget to point out that for the first time in US History, NEITHER the President or Vice-President are White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants. That’s a huge leap forward for this country, in my opinion.
As for the idiot whining about the birth certificate, congratulations GOP, you’ve found your very own 9/11 Truth movement equivalent.
One of the first acts Obama ought to do is to prosecute those in the military that perpetrated the cover up into Pat Tillman’s death. If John McCain had been serious about being a “maverick” he would have said something about that. Tillman was from his own state, for crying out loud.
Congratulations, Pete, you’re an identity-politics race hustler. Let’s hope the new administration pushes your ilk – which has had the megaphone for many decades – to the back benches of his cheerleading section.
Perhaps the GOP would be more successful at attracting black voters if in the future avoided some of the following things:
1. “Barack the Magic Negro” – come on, was that really a bright move by the RNC
2. Rush calling Obama a “Half-rican American”
3. Calling the Obama’s “uppity”, which that nimrod Southerner said, claiming he didn’t know the phrase had a racial connotation.
4. Most importantly, enough with this “secret Kenyan Muslim commie usurper” idiocy. When Republicans constantly imply that Obama just isn’t “American enough” it sends a terrible signal to black America.
No offense, JIC, but “trutherism” ISN’T a part of the mainstream left. It’s considered to be an extreme fringe belief. It always has.
Cam, buddy..you’re missing the point. Given that America is in fact a “melting pot”, then it should go without saying that not every President should be from one specific subset (WASP) for its entire history. That’s not “race-hustling”, that’s reality.
For instance, given that the current GOP is dominated by southern evangelicals, I think that it is highly doubtful that you’ll be seeing a Catholic Republican as your party’s nominee anytime soon.
JR, perhaps while basking in the glow of the American story, you missed the following comments:
“God damn America!” –Rev. Jeremiah Wright
“We need a revolutionary communist party in order to lead the struggle, give coherence and direction to the fight, seize power and build the new society.” –Bill Ayers in “Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-imperialism”
Of the many suspensions of disbelief in which we were asked to engage during the past election cycle, one of the most notable was that Obama’s long and close associations with people like Ayers and Wright had no bearing on his suitability to lead this nation.
With respect sir, it seems evident that you have drunk the Kool-Aid.
Why is this guy given a spot to post on Big Hollywood? We can get this nonsense on the Huffington Post or any other newspaper in the country.
BTW, Obama is far from a great politician or a great man. He gives a good speech, but is far from a great debater and doesn’t do that well in sit-down interviews. He isn’t even as qualified to be President as Sarah Palin, who isn’t qualified herself.
“Of course, Ridley did forget to point out that for the first time in US History, NEITHER the President or Vice-President are White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants.”
Wow, who knew JFK was NOT catholic. Stopped reading that goofy comment after that.
Ridley, yes, Obama is the first “truly American president”. Um, not really. He’s an American man. A smart American man. A smart American man who leans way to the left. We’ll see how it plays out, but this post was truly vapid. Congrats.
Its too bad the melting pot is an old saw. It was intended as a place to put aside our differences to find the common good, you know, e pluribus unum, that old saw. But now, we celebrate and reinforce our differences and grievances.
If you read the comment closely, it’s factually true that for the first time in US history, neither member of the Presidential ticket is a WASP. Yes, Kennedy was a Catholic, but LBJ most assuredly was not. Obama obviously isn’t a WASP, and Biden is Catholic.
And, yes, Jindal is going to have problems overcoming his Catholicism in the eyes of the nutter evangelicals that currently hold a disproportionate sway over the GOP nominating process. I think that’s actually a crying shame, but very conservative Protestants still think the Pope is the anti-Christ.
obama is a criminal. He blames the United States for 9/11
He is a socialist. His grandparents were admitted communists. They believed in communism that has killed over 100 million people.
He is personal friends to William Ayers (involved in 4 murders, planned on killing 300 soldiers and their dates at a dance with a nail bomb – went off prematurly and killed Ayers girlfriend), Tony Rezco (convicted felon) and Nadmi Ahmed (Saddams friend – was involved in a 1959 coup together – bought weapons for Iraq, used oil contracts to bribe european leaders)
That mansion of his was bought by Rezco & Ahmed.
Friends with PLO terrorist Rashid Khalidi (was at a party with him praising him – LA Times has video but refuses to release it).
His wife is a criminal as well – accepting over $200,000 in bribes from the hospital she ‘worked’ in (1 of 18 vice presidents…in a hospital). She received the bribe on the very day obama became a US senator. The hospital later received over a million dollars in taxpayer money from obama.
The combination of the clintons and obamas will I believe result in many more terrorists attacks on this country. I hope that Isreal will bomb Iran and set back Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. obama will do what he can to see that Iran will get the weapons
I hope that obama will do what he has done as state senator and US senator and vote ‘present’
I hope obama fails in every aspect.
Pete,
The most recent veep nominee was a northern female. And, you’ve already been corrected on the JFK omission (no biggie, I needed a reminder, as well). I took offense to your tone, as it put forth the notion that somehow it’s BETTER if someone is of a certain color or religion (or, better yet, NOT of a certain color or religion). Which, is exactly what you posited.
Given the opportunity, I feel confident in saying that the GOP voters would’ve preferred to have Palin on the top of the ticket.
Of course, that item of the “melting pot” went against all that is true and pure among the left, thus she had to be destroyed.
Perhaps the GOP would be more successful at attracting black voters if in the future…
….you could name a single black Republican who isn’t or hasn’t been called some sort of Uncle Tom or Traitor to his race or handkerchief head or some facsimile thereof within 10 minutes of their proclamation of ideological choice. Y’see, that’s part in parcel of this site’s necessity: a black who isn’t a Democrat is as demonized as an entertainer who doesn’t spout the leftist articles of faith. There are fewer things more biting to someone who is black than to be told by their own bretheren that they’re not ‘authentic’ because they’re Republicans.
Not that I don’t blame the GOP for not attracting more black voters. It’s pretty difficult to see how the DNC could screw over that group any more than what they’ve done over the last few generations within the inner-cities (which they’ve completely controlled for decades). If Robert Byrd were still a member of the KKK and wanted to destroy the black community, he’d have envisioned majority black areas being run by local-machine Democrats. Or, in short, exactly what DID happen. But, that’s a subject for another day. Today is for worshiping the first “true American” President. Or, so I’m told.
My obligatory Obama-is-a-politician and get off of your knees John Ridley reply. (and why you look silly)
Your idol worship of Obama is typical, although no less disturbing. Just like every Obamaton that has been born in the last 2 years, your basis of Obama’s “greatness” is based off of absolutely nothing.
Can you have a heritage more American than Obama’s? Yes, easily and if you knew what defined us as Americans you’d realize how stupid that question is. I refuse to even address this non-point.
And can you have a narrativea (sic) more American than Obama’s? Again, methinks you need to study a bit more. You seem to think there was so much “racial bias” that was overcome to win this election, when the reality is that the racial aspect of this election was put forth and perpetuated entirely by Obama’s own party. We saw him as a Democrat candidate, while liberals couldn’t see past the fact that he was a black candidate.
And would it have been possible to have had an election more American than Obama’s? How about election coverage without media bias? How about truly vetting the background of your messianic candidate? How about an election based off an educated voting populace making decisions based off of something besides flowery speeches? How about an election not tainted by Obama’s ACORN minions driving the uneducated masses to vote based on their own whims?
I submit to you, sir that if in your eyes Obama is America: Your geography is quite flawed.
Unlike some other posters around here though, I hope you stick around and write often. It’s enlightening to be exposed to this simplistic mentality you portray that is representative of so many of Obama’s supporters.
…soooooo pretty much the opposite of “not by the color of [his] skin, but by the content of [his] character” eh?
Obama didn’t “lift himself from food stamps,” his bank-manager grandma did.
————————
“shut out the white noise of racial bias and flip the switch for the person they thought was the best for the job”
Or…since no American was given any evidence at all that he was in any way qualified for the job, it was the “white noise” of racial bias that got him elected.
Are we playing “opposite day” today and no one told me?
“Its too bad the melting pot is an old saw. It was intended as a place to put aside our differences to find the common good, you know, e pluribus unum, that old saw. But now, we celebrate and reinforce our differences and grievances.”
Indeed.
Mr. Ridley, what you wrote today is so offensive it isn’t even funny. That you chose to write it about this man is proof positive you know nothing of what you speak.
I was always taught that race was irrelevant, and character was everything. The Democrats are teaching a powerful lesson that race is still very much important to them.
Yes, Cam we are BETTER for breaking the monopoly of WASPs in the White House. You can’t claim to be a “melting pot” society if only one ethnic group is ever in control of it. And Palin wasn’t an ethnic or religious trailblazer, sorry.
John Ridley:
My 2 cents? Change the channel, please.
And Palin wasn’t an ethnic or religious trailblazer, sorry.
Obama is only an ethnic trailblazer. His religion is pretty much the same as all those dastardly WASPs you’re so tired of.
Much like Mr. Ridley’s proclamation that Obama is great (simply winning an election must do it, since no one can point to any accomplishment or legislation that he’s been a part of that makes him ‘great’), it’s all about his skin color. Which is fine, don’t get me wrong, slavery is the greatest stain on our nation’s soul, but to deny the obvious is a bit much. That’s identity politics. Like political correctness, its shelf-life is wearing thin (thank goodness), lest many be left pondering how to retort a Palin/Jindal ticket.
I’m prepared to give Obama the same support and respect the Donks and moonbats gave President Bush. Therefore, I have recently attached a “Not in My Name” bumper sticker to my car and created my own version of “Chimpy Obama” and “Barack HusseinHITLER Obama” and “Impeach Now!” posters for use at the first protest.
I was excited about this site. And then I read this.
This site just started and we’re already going liberal? I’ve pushed this site to tons of friends! I love it! And now I’m reading more messianic projections. This is getting tired. C’mon Drew. Lose this guy already.
I voted against him because he is a socialist and friends of terrorists and other assorted criminals. His “blackness” meant nothing to me.
okay, John.. I’m confused… I’m honestly missing what the point is on this one?
Can you have a heritage more American than Obama’s?
HUH? How about everyone in this country that is American? Heck, I’m sure you’ve got a lot of european/african ancestry in your blood too? So are you less of an American than President Obama? (now that it’s the 20th and he’s been inaugurated, I will use the correct title (Thank God, no more of this “office of President-Elect” talk (that never existed!))
And can you have a narrativea more American than Obama’s? …
OHHH… Ok!! Now that that i got to the next paragraph, I have to admit, now I think I get the point of this post (of course, I could still be reading it wrong, but I’m pretty sure I’m not now)… I think I’m brain-dead from the miserable happenings in the office… (Too bad they won’t let me have a bottle of beer in the office… It’d have gotten through my thick skull sooner!
John. I’d like for you to elaborate the following quote more:
“And can you have a narrativea more American than Obama’s? In the most Horatio Algeresque fashion he lifted himself up from a swamp of food stamps, went on to study at the best universities. Despite his Ivy League pedigree, Obama skips his shot at easy millions, becomes one of those much maligned “do nothing” community organizers, bucks the system, fights the old school and ends up president. Hey-day Frank Capra couldn’t commit to film a more finely tuned ode to Yankee gumption.”
I didn’t vote O because I knew nothing more than what the News Media force down my throat, which is nothing about what he’s done or stood for (I don’t mean for the poor and under priviledge). What were the specific goals, other than raise taxes and spread money around. Maybe this will help ease my mind. Really.
“The first true American to lead our nation.”
Bwahahahahahaha.
What Obama is…is our first affirmative-action president. If he was a white dude and a community organizer from Chicago with a name like Barry O’Brian he would have lost in a landslide.
He is NOT the fulfillment of MLK’s dream. He was not judged by the contect of his character…he was in fact judged by the color of his skin. If he had been judged by the content of his character he would have been judged a nutjob…jeremiah wright, bill ayers, baby’s are “punishment”, “spread the wealth”, Rezco, Odinga, “the waters will recede, the land begin to heal” as so on.
I wish he was the fulfillment of MLK’s dream, but he is, in fact, the exact opposite. And MLK was a Republican, as was Jackie Robinson, if anyone cares.
Dude….?
Ken, I dunno… after reading the post a second time, I got the impression (and this is where my comment about “getting the post” comes into play.. so if I’m wrong, I’d love for JR to correct me), that JR was going over the top intentionally to imply that all this “special attention” Obama’s getting by the left/left-wing/liberal establishment is just that… leftist ‘diatribe’, pretty words thrown together to make Obama something “special” when he’s not.
Something, anything that makes him truly ’special’/'different’/'on a higher plane than you or I’… Whereas we know, there is nothing that makes Obama “more American” than you, I, or any of the people of this country.
Of course, I could be COMPLETELY Off the mark, and JR truly believes what he wrote in this post, but I just honestly can’t see that being the case.
On second thought…if you’re serious about this, then have fun.
If you’re punk’ing us, then well done.
The first true American to be president? Bizarre assertion with a weak argument.
Was that capital S you were staring at when you wrote this piece on a Superman costume, or were you trying to redefine Stupid?
“He’s the first truly American President.” Really? Truly? Truly truly?
I’m glad this site offers opportunities for balanced discourse, but I’m sure we can do better than this.
“The first true American to lead our nation.” Did you just say that every other president wasn’t a ‘true’ American? Do you want to re-think that?
So, now, you are definining who is a ‘true’ American and Pres Obama is the only one who fits that description? With all due respect, I think you need to look up hyperbole in the dictionary. And then look up all the related words in the thesauraus, on google-dictionary, etc and etc. I am happy, no, delighted to see the first African American president sworn into office. I am, however, embarrassed by the degree of gushing I see in some of you. I mean this respectfully, so please take it in that fashion: GET A GRIP.
Seriously, why not just shorten this op-ed to – He Is Risen?
David.Brock.
People like you are so stuck on the superficial it is no wonder this country is being taken to the cleaners. Obama’s membership in CFR and friendship with people like Soros and Brzezinzki make him anything but a typical American or even an American at all. Oh, he went to one of the finest HIGH SCHOOLS in the nation while his mother was ripping off the welfare system.
“The first true American to lead our nation.”
Pure Garbage.
I wont say he is Less of an american than any one else, but he certainly is not More of an American either.
Yesterday was Martin Luther King Day. MLK said he dreamed of a time and place when a person judged NOT by the color of his skin but by his merits. I looked at B HUSSEIN Obama and did not see skin color…but I also did not see any merit that would qualify him as a President of the United States. B Hussein Obama has failed America already because he asked us all to look at his skin color and dared anyone to vote against it.
Remember – Dissent is patriotic and I consider the Oval Office empty now. Empty suit, empty office. May God confound the Marxist!
I could agree that O’Bama is great if he’d show us his accomplishments, his true birth certificate, his medical records, and his school records. Change is just not an accomplishment. Until he does, I consider him an illegitimate president. This has nothing to do with his race. There are quite a few black persons who I’d be thrilled to vote for. However, each of them has a record we can read up on and make decisions on. Not so for O’Bama.
Without exception, the most imbecilic thing I have ever read in this short-lived forum.
So, Obama, from a wealthy Kansas and Washington banking family and a wealthy Kenyan family, then adopted by a wealthy Indonesian, rose out of food stamps? No, he did not. Once his mom moved back to Honolulu from Indonesia, they lived in my neighborhood, but he didn’t go to Aina Haina Elementary, whence I rode my bike; he was driven far away to Pounaho, the elite private school in Honolulu. I don’t seem to recall them having a special “Food Stamp Mama Scholarship”. My family made ends meet on dependent benefits as near to our Dad, in Vietnam, as we could be, so that we might be closer when he had leave.
Funnny, I don’t remember my same-aged neighbor, Barack, struggling up the hills delivering the Honolulu Advertiser before school. He’s a smart man, but ultimately an empty vessel into which well-meaning ignarami pour their aspirations.
I am ordinarily inclined to be nice to the simpletons that put this con-artist in office, for they know not what they do. However, there is a limit to my tolerance of ignorance.
This guy Ridley needs to post more, if only to keep up the humor-quotient that attracts me to Big Hollywood.
Oh, John. Stirring up trouble wherever you go. Come back to the WGA! All is forgiven! (This crowd does not to nuance or poetical thinking. Better to stick with the red meat.)
Oops; preview! “ignorami”
Was this supposed to be satire? LOL, you know it’s bad when it’s hard to tell if something is satire or not based on the ‘all adulation all the time’ network coverage. I mean, when you have an inagural poem that reads like bad undergrad poetry (this is for you Harley)
“Benediction at Obama ’s inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery: ‘Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around… when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right.”
Now, that’s satire, right?
“Nuance and poetical thinking”? The vortex of moral inversion widens, as the correctly and piously hackneyed becomes the nuanced. This is how it is, and how it will become, in our age of the “orthodoxy-sniffers.” But otherwise I agree: Yes, go back to the WGA.
Ridley, you are setting yourself up for a big disappointment as well as most of the other supporters of President Obama. Even after voting for George Bush twice, I never put him on a pedestal. Also, drop the “Barack pulled himself up by the boot straps”…he’s had more handed to him than most white boys I grew up with.
Correction: offspring of an exchange student and a native. Barack’s dad didn’t seem too enamored of the American Dream, nor too eager to meld himself into the American population. Seems he just came here for the low-cost education.
I think that may have left Barack with daddy issues similar to Bill Clinton’s. I hope that’s the only similarity.
You asked, “Can you have a heritage more American than Obama’s?”
Uh, actually, I do. My earliest ancestors arrived here in the 1600s. My most recent, from Ireland in the late 1800s. They all worked their asses off to achieve success and did extraordinarily well without sticking their hands out and demanding anything. They weren’t interested in what the government would give them at the expense of their neighbors. My grandfather worked on the railroad to put his brother through Stanford and then he worked to put himself through as well. He didn’t whine about foodstamps or bitch about having to work while he put first his brother and then himself through school. Obama is American by birth but not by attitude.
Hey…that OTHER Nick M is NOT me…I’m just saying;
So, in fairness, I checked the author’s link, “…for more perspective….” This is his larger perspective:
“…And would it have been possible to have had an election more American than Obama’s? One that put the exclamation point on our long, slow crawl to civil rights. Not arrived to – as in decades and centuries past – through the righteousness of passive resistance, the threat of violence or the lever of those darn “activist” judges. It was just people by their own, free will choosing to shut out the white noise of racial bias and flip the switch for the person they thought was the best for the job.
Quite simply, quite plainly, just by virtue his being, Obama is America. The first true American to lead our nation.”
So, obviously, satire.
I too have been recommending this site to my friends. Aside from the fact that you have been far too generous with the trolls (Teh Stupid), I had mostly seen conservatives and libertarians expressing ideas from multiple viewpoints. But that mix should define the parameters of this site. I can read (and do) multiple blogs that have lefty viewpoints. I didn’t recommend this site to friends to have them informed that they are not true Americans because they aren’t the right ethnic mix. If Obama is the first true American (by any definition other than racist leftwing propaganda)to lead our nation, then every friend I have is not a true American, including all my grandchildren of mixed German/Irish/Hispanic mix. As for the 30% white male nonsense, as with all ethnic and racial separatist garbage, it is both foolish and irrelevant. All eight of my grandchildren are by leftist definition “Hispanic” simply because of their surnames. Since the boys can’t be white, they can’t be part of the shrinking white male category even though three of them have fairer skin than I do. They’re my grandkids. I love them all. But by your writer’s definition, they are ipso facto more American than I am simply because my ethnic background is entirely German. Phooey. I don’t need this crap. And I don’t want to continue reading it on what I thought was a conservative/libertarian site. Leave the race-baiting for other sites, please. And if Obama is a true American, I guess I’m glad I’m a fake one. I still have the scars and the metal pin in my leg from my sojourn in Oxford, Mississippi handed to me by a segregationist bat-wielder in ‘64. I was always proud of those scars and broken bones. And now I have to read this young punk telling me I’m not a true American? No thanks.
John, I consider you a good writer, but this was “searching” for reasons to like Obama, and frankly is more like pandering.
As a staunch Black Conservative, I see nothing to celebrate in Obama’s “Ignoration”, which people called an inauguration. He is the epitome of style over substance, and propagated the myth that Blacks are always looking for the short cut…the hookup.
Well he got it! He is without a doubt the least experienced president in modern history, and that lack of experience will mean that he “overshoots” in policy. That paired with his wish to appease everyone will be his undoing.
When I consider Black “firsts”, I recall that they always were at the top of the heap, and eminently qualified…Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, Lee Elder, Tiger Woods, Jack Johnson, and many more, I think of the tradition of excellence. It sets the stage for Blacks to come. And when I consider that when Blacks needed “the best” the most, we got Obama.
