Obama’s Leadership Deficit
by Joseph C. PhillipsAppearing on CNN with Anderson Cooper, film director Spike Lee implored President Obama to infuse his handling of the Gulf oil spill with more emotion. Demonstrating the astute analysis we have come to expect from the director, Lee implored Obama to “one time, go off.”
Perhaps he is of the same mind as Bill Maher, that the authentic black man is one who is always armed and resorts to violence and loud-talking when things do not go his way. (Note to self: On the way home from the liquor store, I must pick up my Glock from the gun shop.)

Both Lee and Maher seem to share the opinion of a great many progressives that emotion is the same as leadership and that problems are most easily solved by decree. It is no mistake that following criticism by Lee and others, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was declaring to the media that he had “seen rage from him [President Obama].” Apparently, when Obama gets angry, he clinches his jaw.
Soon after the Gibbs press conference, the President showed up in Louisiana, walked the beach in shirt sleeves and then, with clenched jaw, he spoke of growing up in a culture where the water was sacred. The administration meant this to be a demonstration of leadership. However, in some quarters, this is also known as street theatre.
Still seeking to enhance his “street cred,” the president then appeared on morning television, lowered his pants down below his buttocks, flashed his gold teeth, and announced that he was looking for some tail to kick.
In the meantime, the oil continues to gush from the well and the resulting slick is now the size of a small state.
As it turns out, sending the attorney general to Louisiana and ordering BP to “plug the damn hole” and then “going off” on national television didn’t solve the problem.
If the poll numbers are to be believed, it would also appear that Americans are not impressed with how much booty a president can kick, especially if it is not accompanied by decisive action, which actually addresses the problem. Over the course of the last two months, the president has had several opportunities to take bold and determined action–to be a leader. He has dithered instead.
A few of the missed opportunities:
Fire-booms that were supposed to be a part of any oil-spill response were missing in action. When they were finally located there were too few to do much good.
In the event of a major spill, federal responders had pre-approval to begin burning oil. They waited more than a week before doing a test-burn and then stopped. Experts have suggested that had the burning begun right away, 90% of the oil could have been burned away before it spread.
Thirteen countries have offered the United States the advantage of their technical skills. To date, the Obama administration has declined to take advantage of all of this experience and expertise.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers delayed the building of protective sand-berms until they could study the issue. The administration finally approved six berms, but only agreed to pay for one of them. Government officials say they want to first see if they work. Of course, by that time building more berms won’t do any good.
Two months into the crisis, Admiral Thad Allen, the U.S. official in charge of the Gulf of Mexico crisis, (or is he?), is still talking about asking Congress for a waiver of the Jones Act, which would allow foreign vessels involved in the crisis to operate in American waters. However, that may not do much good. Louisiana boat owners who have volunteered to aid in clean-up efforts are complaining that bureaucratic red-tape is keeping them out of the water.
On a positive note, the president did create another government commission.
Leadership of the statesman variety–as opposed to the shirtsleeves and furrowed-brow-look-of-concern variety–would have the president with a large pair of scissors cutting through the red tape. A leader scours the private sector for the most knowledgeable folks he can find and asks for their help. He gets on the phone with our allies and says, “Yes! Please send me your experts!” He says to the governors of the Gulf States, “Tell me what you need.” Leadership is putting aside political agendas and mobilizing the power of the executive office in order to solve an immediate crisis.
Leadership doesn’t always need big speeches or street corner bravado. Leadership can be quiet; it can be cool and determined. But if it isn’t focused and it isn’t active, it ain’t worth the price of admission to a “Spike Lee Joint.”

All true, but you must understand that a man who has this visionary project to totally and permanently rearrange our politics and economy cannot be bothered with day-to-day crisis management. He is an intellectual, not a stupid fireman. But when it is done – cap & trade, national health care, the VAT – and he has transformed America into a proper European state with no growth and high unemployment but fair, then you, the little people, will be grateful. Yes, you will. Yes, you will. Chant it. "Yes, we will". Louder, maggots!
President Zippy is an empty suit. Every time he opens his mouth he reinforces this. By now only the true die hard kool ade drinkers are buying what he's selling; unfortunately among the true believers are a majority of the media, who are only too happy to clean up after him.
Spike Lee and Bill Maher voted for a Hollywood president. They picked the guy they thought was the best actor and fit the part. Ability had little to do with it. And now they're looking at their guy and wondering why there are no retakes.
There's a lot of Ayn Rand points in this piece, most noteably, for me anyway, is you can't just tell some one to fix something. It takes a person of talent, education, and ingenuity to fix or create something, but when you tax the living daylights out of those people, those people tend to go away and the only ones left are the one who can pull a lever or push a button. Same thing with the application of force – no amount trashing, smaking down, putting your boot on someones' neck, or putting a gun to their head will solve a problem requiring talent. Leardership – the art of influencing people to do something you want them to do, is something this President has no concept of, has never seen, wouldn't recognize if it stood up and barked. And is thus, something he will never attain.
Hey, shouldn't Biden and Pelosi be missing their heads too? Sorry, I guess it's just wishful thinking that all three be headless.
They can erase the heads of Biden and Pelosi too.

Let's go pick up that Glock buddy. I'll cover you with the .357 Blackhawk I carry in case the SEIU tries to start anything while we try to get around the ACORN picket line. >:-)
the difference between a leader, and a wanna be. the wanna be needs to ask who's ass to kick, the leader tells saddam, give up, dead or alive. can you see the difference?
Plug that damn hole Daddy!
This was written by someone with the handle = General Mayhem. It is his/her work, and I like it.
You're now entering a dimension beyond what hope'n'change has stimulated, not to mention spoiled and squandered.
It is a dimension as unpopular as Obamacare and as untimely as cap'n'trade.
It is a middle finger raised between platitude & lassitude, and between a campaign that never ends and sound bites forever blaming Bush; and it lies between spin to allay Gulf fears and photo-ops with tar balls, all capped off by an Oval Office speech touting wind turbines, solar panels, and "energy-efficient windows."
This is a dimension of flimsy obfuscation and of Jones Act and EPA waivers long delayed. Beyond it are other dementia— the distraction of hoops and bogeys, a declining dollar and an ever-dizzy Dow, plus dimwitted vicissitudes from McCartney and Calderon.
You've moving into a dimension of both denial and delay, of ideas ignored and logical things undone. You have seen the signpost up ahead— it reads, "It took a spillage"— and you're just crossing over into . . . the Obama Zone.
We will cheer louder and you'll be forced to listen and watch the change that is occur because this is our country now.
You gun nuts make me laugh.
Obviously you are uneducated in matters related to firearms. While my original comment is a joke, yours betrays a serious lack of understanding.
It is the firearm that saves a 120 pound woman from a 200 pound rapist. It is the firearm that stops a group of thugs from rampaging through someone's home and killing a family. It is the firearm that keeps a free people free.
"It is not merely the Right, but the Duty of Free men and women to retain and bear individual arms. Thus the weak can face the strong and the Free can face the Tyrant."
Those who fail to understand that truth become slaves.
That picture should be the official portrait.
It’s Day 60 – Crisis in the Gulf: A Crisis of Leadership… as in there isn’t any. Obama and Rahm Emanuel would love to change the subject.
This whole episode cries out for investigative reporting… but that presupposes an inclination on the part of the lame stream media to take an active interest in searching for the truth, wherever it leads. The Emperor has been naked for months now and the media can’t find an angle.
An absolute unmitigated disaster. A typical radical liberal. Has ideas that he's not sure of so he has to lie constantly. Totally devoid of any core character. He will go down in history as the most inept President ever. I have but one request; that is, PLEASE, PLEASE spend the rest of your one and only term on the golf course! You can't harm the country while you're golfing, just maybe a spectator or two.

If massive government spending is the key to getting out of the depression, then why are they against spending any Federal money on the gulf cleanup?

WASHINGTON – A White House spokesman says the United States benefits when President Barack Obama takes time to go golfing and "clear his mind."
————————————–
WTF!?!?! 'Clear his mind'!!! What kind of idiocy is this? I don't want him to clear his mind. I want his mind FULL of everything he is SUPPOSED to be thinking of and considering.
Or maybe not. Or maybe not.
What a buffoon.
An American Tragedy – the election and presidency of BHO.
What happens when a coward refuses to make a decision because he's afraid he'll make the wrong one, and someone calls out his inaction. ? He talks tuff; "I'll kick somebody's ass ! ". Deep down inside, Obama is a coward. An egotistical and arrogant coward, but a coward all the same. He's afraid of making a wrong decision himself, and he believes that he is smarter and braver than all of us, so what does that tell you about Obama's faith in our decision making ? Of course, the voters did elect his sorry ass.
Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Obama is not a coward. Maybe he is evil, and letting the oil pollute the Gulf for his own political gain.
So which is it, Barack ? Are you a coward, or are you evil ? There is a third choice. Maybe he's just stupid.
What, another Bastille Day ? http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGdGYQQSBM.1UAWp9XNyo...

Funny, I don´t hear a lot of cheering. But thanks for confirming that no growth and high unemployment are of no concern to creeps like you.
Is that your party membership number, 7768? Pretty low. Is it low because you are a lunatic fringe or did you join in 1933? Hey, could be both.
I cannot help noticing that Obama spends a lot of time clearing his mind.
Frankly, it wouldn´t make much of a difference how much time he spends golfing IF his administration did not get in the way of efforts to mitigate the consequences of this disaster and IF he didn´t try so bleeding hard to benefit politically from it.
President Bush gave up golfing for the remainder of his Presidency because he thought it was inappropriate to be seen playing while soldiers were dying. A purely symbolic act, and brought on in part by media criticizm, but even so. Class.
[...] Obama’s Leadership Deficit [...]
I'll go with evil; as in sinister, conniving, selfishly working all these angles to further his agenda. Just my two cents worth di da.
Would brainless work, cause it sure seems that way.
Not me, they make me sick. Asshats have no idea about freedom and if they did they would just want to get rid of it.
Every time Obama is doing something, it presents another problem. As Thomas Sowell puts it:
"Just where in the Constitution of the United States does it say that a president has the authority to extract vast sums of money from a private enterprise and distribute it as he sees fit to whomever he deems worthy of compensation? Nowhere. [...] Many among the public and in the media may think that the issue is simply whether BP's oil spill has damaged many people, who ought to be compensated. But our government is supposed to be "a government of laws and not of men." [...] But the Constitution says that private property is not to be confiscated by the government without "due process of law." [...] Technically, it has not been confiscated by Barack Obama, but that is a distinction without a difference."
We may be better off with this guy on the golf course. Then again, 20 billion is nothing. It´s not even close to a trillion.
Oh, give the bastid a chance, he'll find some way to harm America on the golf course.
Sorry. Can't really reply. Clearing my mind.
Yup, I agree, evil it is. I just can't resist calling progressives cowardly and dumb whenever I get a chance.
"the president with a large pair of scissors cutting through the red tape" you mean plowing under the entire legal process thru which fines, penalties, victim compensation, etc, are normally assessed to preemptively shake down BP for $20 billion doesn't count?
if ever there were a time that this expression was more appropriate, i sure can't remember it:
"LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!"
That photoshopped image is both creepy and accurate.
And y'know, for someone who's all about the "global community", you'd think he'd accept more of their help.
"We?" "Our?" And who might that be, little feller?
Well, it's pretty much a given fact that none of three have any balls.
How can Spike Lee, George Clooney, Oprah, etc say this man has any practical experience in leadership let alone cleaning up anything?
Face it, dems. You fell for the plot of a bad Hollywood movie. Your best man to lead is nothing but a mirage. In years to come, Obama might be known as the man who read from a teleprompter script and played a president on TV.
After 2012 he and Jimmy Carter can catch up, share war stories of what it is like to be a one-termer.
Well said, Mr. Phillips.
Uhhh…..In order to have a deficit, you first have to have something to be deficient in.
I'm not aware of even FUZZY math or logic that speaks to a deficit of nil, zip, zilch or nada.
To that end a special panel has been commissioned by Obama to study that issue and is expected to report their findings sometime after happy hour at the nineteenth hole.
Even at his best “going off,” President Obama isn’t a quarter the leader Black Bush was. “Shut. The. &%^#. Up!!!”
"Over the course of the last two months, the president has had several opportunities to take bold and determined action–to be a leader. He has dithered instead."
He extorted a ton of money from BP and has used the spill as an opportunity to shove his cap n trade down our throats. What more do you want? :p
Freud got one right!
Wasn't this overheard late one night from the Obama's open bedroom window?
Makes me sound like a loon, but stupid people don't become pres. & I am going with cowardly bully. He gets so Yosemite Sam when you make fun of his ears, or otherwise tic him off.
It's because his little mind fills up so quickly.
I understand. Just one more thing we can learn from Obama. He is like my sensei. Last night I thought about plugging holes. As a result, I couldn´t sleep. Then I blamed financial speculators and the old politics as usual, beyond which we must get. Next thing you know, I slept like a baby.
I'm employed so of course it's of no concern to me. In the end it all boils down to self-interest.
A fly on his face and he's just too kool to brush it away http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100622/capt.66491abceb...
No, they don't. You just say whatever you want so you can get some attention and make sure no one ever sees you as a decent human being, because that sort of thing is a sign of weakness to you.
I'm having trouble getting my black stereotypes sorted out. Now all these black conservatives show up. Keep the smart kids away from them. "Who sent you? We don't want nobody nobody sent."
D) All of the above.
