That Audi Commercial!
by Joseph C. PhillipsThe new Audi TDI ad was one of the more provocative commercials shown during the Super Bowl.
The commercial opens with an unsuspecting grocery shopper asking for a plastic shopping bag rather than paper. He is immediately taken into custody by the “Green Police.” As his head is being slammed into the check-out counter the green officer barks, “You picked the wrong day to mess with the eco-system plastic boy!” The spot ends with a long line of cars stopped at an “Eco-check point.” An officer spots the Audi. “TDI here,” he observes. “Clean diesel.” The officer then nods to the driver, “you’re good to go sir.” The driver smiles and then speeds past the traffic jam. The tag line reads: “Green has never felt so good.”
More fascinating than the commercial is the fact that certain environmental Cassandra’s claim the commercial speaks for them. David Roberts for instance, writing in the Huffington Post, argues that “the ad only makes sense if it is aimed at people that acknowledge the moral authority of the green police.” Indeed the driver never challenges the moral authority of the green police. To the contrary, the Audi driver is actually subordinate to that authority. The driver is only able to by-pass the eco check point because his car passes muster. The message of the commercial is that it is possible to be both stylish and eco friendly.
My question to those “that acknowledge the moral authority of the green police”: from where does that authority come? The question is rarely asked by the likes of Roberts because they don’t like the answer.
There are certain universal, objective and immutable truths to which all men are bound. These truths do not come to us through law, statutes or even science, but are instead the gift of divine revelation. It is in order to protect these truths that societies create institutions. The lengths through which our institutions go in conserving and furthering these truths can only be discovered through a process of rational and prudent deliberation. Science is but one of those processes.
We recognize for instance and all of society generally agrees that it is a good thing to arrest, prosecute and fine (or imprison) those that dump poisons into our waters and public lands (not specifically designated for such dumping). The commercial resonates because we tend to blanch at the idea of green police marching fathers from their homes for using incandescent light bulbs (the disposal of which, by the way, does not require that one open windows and don a hazmat suit). The left argues the moral authority for such “eco tactics” stems from the fact that curbing our production of man-made carbon will save the planet. Unfortunately, while the evidence of the dangers of poisons in our landfills is quite clear, the evidence that man-made carbon is causing the earth to warm – er uhm I mean the climate to change – grows less and less persuasive.
Far from recognizing the moral authority of the green police, as outrageous fantasy creeps ever closer to being a reality — (Note to Audi: it stops being satire when it is true)–the commercial perceives the opposite.
Consider that the British parliament is already considering something called, “Domestic tradable quotas” or personal energy rationing. Here’s how it would work: every resident would receive a carbon credit card containing an identical allocation of carbon units. The number of points would be reduced each year in line with the government’s carbon reduction goals. Each time a resident used carbon based energy he/she would have to swipe his card and have a number of DTQ points deducted from their card. Heavy DTQ users would be able to purchase extra points from low DTQ users and no doubt those unable or unwilling to purchase extra points would be fined and jailed. Because almost every activity we engage in involves some sort of carbon production – writing this column on my computer for instance, washing dirty clothes, eating meat.breathing! –it isn’t difficult to imagine the political shenanigans that will accompany a policy prescription that is gaining traction among environmentalists.
Recall that during the presidential election of 2000 Democratic nominee Al Gore was asked the question: “paper or plastic?” Laughter ensued as the climate guru struggled to correctly answer the very question for which the hapless shopper at the beginning of the commercial was arrested.
Thus what we learn from Audi is that the green police are more concerned with power over peoples lives (for power one appeals to politics; it is the absolute wrong place to go looking for morality), which is why it is politics not science, reason or sadly common sense that has driven the question of anthropogenic global warning.

freedom is slavery
OH, it was an eco-fascist commercial then.

This phrase has never been more true than now!
The commercial worked on me, I'll buy a Toyota.
I think Audi realizes that they were going to have to accept the "greener" way they would have to for their vehicles, so why not just mock it. Hard to say that Audi (or at least who ever did this commercial) was actually "for" what they were just mocking.
but if the green police are what is needed, i would like to make a citizens arrest of algore. for it has come to my attention, and moral authority that global warming is a hoax, so i want him frog marched in front of all those eco-extremeists, i need a speedy trial, as upon his conviction as a perpetrator of the hoax, he needs a long prison sentance. after that accomplishment, i will immediately abolish the green police!
Even "joking" about such a fascist application of green police is extremely disturbing. I'm sure liberals loved this commercial as they think they want to live in the "moral superiority" class of people. Only when it happens will they realize that they have become victims of their own hypocrisy by continually applying their platitudes only to others. Suddenly, the fact that they still have incandescent light bulbs in the garage and a gas powered mower will land them in the same "morally inferior" jail cell as those hapless conservatives that have realized since day one the anthropogenic global warming, and even global warming in it's purest form, is a complete hoax. http://www.redstatecommentary.net.
It was a great commercial. Some seemed to be confused with the message. What Audi did was beautifully pander to both groups, environmental bedwetters and regular people. The message: our car is so environmentally friendly that even the tree-hugging hermaphrodites that don't believe in toothpaste or soap approve of our new car.
This looks like an Ed Begley jr. wet dream. Natural fiber hand-cuffs, solar powered tasers, eco-friendly bullets and brain-washed imbeciles to carry it all out. Wonderful…
Mock Green, But Sell Green?
That ad is complicated. Did they intend to mock the Green agenda, just before telling us that their car was the perfect Green vehicle? That is contradictory.
I agree. Audi is selling cars to an audience that does not see the Green Police as too much control. Their buyers would like to enforce all of the restrictions in the ad. Motto: "An enforcement program to be wished for, and a car that meets all the requirements."
Audi shows this is the perfect Green auto after supplying pleasant enforcement images to the intended buyers.
The brilliance of the ad is that it supports the views of its potential customers, while suggesting to many of the rest of us that it mocks Green policy. Everyone finds a way to like the ad.
The joke is that the whole Global Warming meme is being shown to be an outright hoax. Those that embraced the "truth" and crammed it down everyone else's throat are just damn lucky that tar and feathers are not in vogue anymore. The real tragedy is that many nations have embarked on costly economic and political 'green' initiatives which are now utterly foolish in light of the emerging facts of what a hoax AGW is. Instead of developing the most effective, cost effective energy available (aka petroleum and other carbon-based fuels) efforts have been redirected to literally chasing windmills. None, I repeat, none of the 'green' energy solutions are economically viable without governmental props. None of them would be pursued or developed otherwise. As someone who 'does power' for a living, the last thing I would want for my upstream power would be windmill and/or solar power. Both of which require standby carbon-based, hydro or nuclear backup power for when they are not available (which is quite frequent). Hopefully, eyes are being opened and the redirection of our efforts to feasible energy solutions based on science not politics is in offering.
Neighbors spying on neighbors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKinLE4xOGU
Green sure is the new red! Already, in Los Angeles, the Department of Water and Power gave out notices that we should report any neighbors who water their lawns outside of mandated hours we're allotted. Creepy!
That anyone finds this sort of green policing acceptable just tells me they've been thoroughly brainwashed by the Greenies already.
"Anthropogenic global warming" is the leftwings Trojan horse to usher in a suffocating fascism. They've shown their fascistic impulses with nationalization, intimidation and attempts at consolidation of power; with cap & trade and nationalized healthcare they would destroy free market capitalism relegating us to a second rate status under a socialist system where most of our wealth is no longer ours but that of the states. Ultimately we become 21st century slaves.
It's time to lock and load. Hang the new world slave-masters.

What's horrifying is that, when Jeff Jacoby did a column in the Boston fishwrapper on this subject, nearly half the respondents thought the Green Police were a GREAT idea, and applauded the reign of ecofacism! Good God, what has America become?
Big corporations are not known for blowing against the wind. They are far to legalistic and cautious. They will lobby behind closed doors as best they can and comply where they must. This ad was no mockery. This was a serious attempt to improve their image in which they got confused about who their target audience is.
No, the message is: Mein Führer, lead on, our cars will follow!
There is nothing funny about it. I know ad people. They are obsessed with being on top of every "trend". They will jump on any bandwagon, it´s not their job not criticise it. The Audi marketing got sold on all this eco-talk even though the cars they depend on for survival are bigger than the puny A3.
The commercial worked as planned. It straddles the line between satire and mirroring reality. It was perfect in it's jab at the greenies, not too mean or minimizing, and it allows the commercialism to sell a nice car. There's nothing wrong whatsoever in a company providing a product to the public they want to buy – for what ever reason they want to buy the car. The fact that the way they told the "story" creates such buzz is only icing on the cake.
I´m not sure if this ad works for potential Audi buyers. Maybe that is because I find nothing pleasant about it and can´t see the mockery. Audi survives on bigger models than the A3. As a consumer, I don´t need a car company to suggest that I should feel guilty about driving. Put it down to corporate cowardice.
I like the anteater. They are a criminally underrepresented species on t.v., IMHO.
This commercial scared me. When I watched the 'mythical' eco-terrorism in that ad, I waited for my gut to soothe me with the words 'oh, things aren't THAT bad yet!' But unfortunately my gut told me things ARE that bad – at least in California where I live. Salt in the wound was the blaring stupidity of the eco-terrorists who are so clueless they can't see that this Audi commercial was a satire. That's comforting – eco-terrorists have tremendous control, yet they're so brainless they can't realize they're a joke? To the contrary, they're misty-eyed and proud of the terrorism they get to inflict on helpless citizens. Powerful and stupid – that's not funny.
What makes it most galling of all is the fact that the very heart of eco-terrorism – global warming – has already been exposed as damned LIE! The chairman of the IPCC has been outed for his lie about glaciers melting by 2035 and he's fled like a chicken back to India; and the Supreme Liar in Chief of CRU, Professor Jones, has now been forced to admit to the BBC that the whole 'global warming thing' was a scam just to get money for him and his department. Okay, it's a lie – there is no global warming. Yet – the damned eco-terrorists STILL have that noose around my neck. I feel the rope burn every damned time I look up at my ceiling and see that &*)*#@%$ corkscrewed light bulb my apartment manager forced me to install. Every day I wake up, that damned thing is overhead, proof of the brutal control eco-terrorists have in my life. This kind of terrorism is too scary to be soothed simply by a satirical ad by Audi. I'd appreciate the laugh better if I weren't so scared.
Screw that… I'd rather have a Mustang GT with a gasoline burning, tire smoking V8 between the fenders! A four-wheeled giant middle finger to the "Green Police" and Government Motors!
I just loved that commercial, great tune reinvented. The whole time I watched all I could think of was "WOW I think we are headed to revolution". It will be a very cold day in hell when someone arrests me for using up my carbon credits (as suggested for England in the article) especially while the likes of Al Gore and the Speaker of the House what's her name are flying around in private jets and eating and drinking non approved carbon food and alcohol. Audi did it right though people are going to be talking about and using this commercial for month (years?) to come and it will be used on both sides of center, unfortunately once the Lefties find out they are being made fun of, they will probably not be as likely to use it. Really people, do we want this as our future? This is no future, a Green Police telling you when and how you can live and then fining and jailing you if you fail to follow instructions. Come on, even the bed wetters can't be for this kind of government control. England for Goodness Sakes STAND UP FOR YOURSELVES and tell them where they can cram their carbon credits.
AUDI: "Ve have vays of making you green!"
Most ironic to me is what redstatecommentary alluded to: the greatest violators of the Green Police State are the rich liberals promoting the Green Police.
Al Gore's mansion uses 221,000 kw hours… 20 times the American average.
John Edwards built a 28,000 sq ft mansion. Gee, wonder if it uses much energy?
Barbra Streisand's Malibu mansion uses untold amounts of fresh water to keep the acres of grass green.
Obama tells us we can't keep the thermostat where we want it but he keeps the White House balmy: Axelrod: "You could grow orchids in there."
And they all fly around on fleets of private jets burning more fuel than a real person many times over.
These hypocrites talk of conservation but in reality consume the absolute most.
Like all things liberal, come the eco-revolution, they would be the first ones up against the wall.
And if you think it hasn't started, consider the "smart grid" that will control your thermostat from a central government control center, turning your heat down in winter and limiting your AC in summer as our overlords see fit.
Yeah, the 'Green Police' ad was a riot.
Next, they'll do "The Diary of Anne Frank" as a comedy….
And speaking of scary commercials, does it not bother you when you see the Government Motors propaganda commercial touting how On Star can stop your vehicle from Central Command?
Ostensibly killing the engine by remote control is to stop thieves who have stolen your precious SUV. But the practical application is to limit your speed, track your trips and perhaps disable your vehicle if you haven't paid proper tribute to your government.
Late on your car property tax ("license") fees? Turn off the car.
Buy into this system at your own peril.
Loved the commercial — you know the unions were drooling over the green police jobs ! It was their wet dream.
I liked the commercial only because we are so close to this happening. I drive a pickup or mini Van. I think Seattle already has people going through Seattle resisdent's garbage to find out if they are throwing away recycleable material. The people get a extra fine or something. Thats one of the reasons I don't live in Seattle. Plus it isn't kid friendly. Seattle is a pretty wacked out city. They would love the green ppolice there.
On Forensic files, they were outlining a case and a woman had been missing but her car had been found. I can't remember the brand, I want to say Nissan. The car company was able to disable her car after she missed a payment. Now I heard that from Forensic files, I am not sure if it's fact or fiction but I'm going to look that up. I have On Star, pay their $200 a year fee because it has road side assistance and blah blah other stuff, I never thought about them slowing me down or stopping me, but you are right, this is a real possibility, I have had it for 3 years. Thanks for enlightening me.
Isn't Seattle the birth place of Grunge? What I find so ironic (speaking of Seattle and the crowds of youths that it draws) is the willingness of the younger generation to voluntarily give up all their rights. My teenage daughter fought me on everything, she was never willing to give in to me, I assumed children were like that. Now the college students can't give their freedoms away fast enough to the government. Whatever happened to them 'wanting to do what they want to do"? Do they not understand that the Green Police is going to limit their lives more than mom and dad ever did? Glad to know my now 22 year old daughter still has not given up on her freedom and will fight off these whako left nut jobs to retain her freedom
Exactly! Here's a post I did about these eco-hypocrites:
http://aprilbaby.typepad.com/a_california_life/20...
And, speaking of policing our thermostats, isn't it a tad suspicious that Gore, the biggest global warming fear-monger of them all, will make a profit off of carbon trading but with his company Silver Springs? The company makes carbon monitors for homes and businesses and the software for authorities to track our usage.
Who are we plebeians to question the great Gore?
Two questions: What's up with the anteater? And what the heck does "Clean Diesel" really mean?
Great article! I love reading stuff written by someone who knows how to think. Thanks.
I thought Audi did a great job of playing both sides of the fence. Why should they alienate half the population when they can make either side think they are speaking to them?
As a conservative, I found the commercial refreshing since it is so rare our point of view is acknowledged, without being mocked, in popular culture.
I saw it and thought it was pretty funny. Like a spoof on the Greenies but all the same telling you that the TDI diesel is clean (nothing wrong with wanting a clean emitting vehicle as long as one isn't obnoxious or preachy about it!)
Maybe this commercial is like a Rorschach test – with different meanings to different people.
The Europeans have really pioneered good diesels – with the heart being a high pressure injecting system that shots fuel directly into the chamber.
Another reason I like my 2 24 year old cars. Delightfully low-tech.
When I had my '76 Toyota Corolla, two tools that I used to fix it were a matchbook cover and a rock. Set the points with the matchbook cover – just the right thickness. Because there was some corrosion buildup on the battery terminals, my car wouldn't even turn over. Tap-tap-tap with the rock, and it started right up. I'm almost afraid to pop the hood on my current vehicle for fear that I might inadvertently screw something up.

I read the funniest thing in one of the car mags while waiting at the barbershop. One of the editors is going though the list of all the cars he has had over the years with all their idiosyncrasies. His VW Beetle was so old and rusty that when jacking up the car the frame collapses.
The Peugeot did this, the Chevy did that…
He gets to his 76 Toyota Corolla, and says that "I drove it for 140,000 miles and not a single bad incident. I don't have to take that kind of crap!
Honestly the new complexity of the cars is a dual edge sword, but I am seeing more negative than positive for the complexity over the added performance.
The latest Toyota acceleration problem is just an example. Car's used to have a simple cable or linkage that moved when you moved the accelerator pedal with your foot. You depress the pedal; the linkage opened up the throttle. Take your foot off and the throttle closes. The worst problem was not lubing the linkage.
They were simple.
Now you have a potentiometer which translate your foot movement to electronic impulses which tells the throttle to open or close.
Dependent on software, of course.
You have a 100 sensors which tell the computers how to respond. Which will all go out in the coming years, needing diagnosis and replacement.
You have software that is never written "bug free" the first time it is introduced to consumers.
If that isn't enough all new cars can tell authorities what the car was doing prior to a collision. A tattle-tale black box, if you will.
If they can remotely open your locked doors I see no reason why htey can't disable the car via satellite.
Mine lasted for 7 years and just under 200K mi. Then both the clutch and the transmission went. I had them both fixed, but it was never the same. Luckily, I reported to Ft. Benning, GA in '83 for IOBC, and traded it in for a brand new RX-7. I kind of missed it and felt bad until a couple of months later, when I saw it parked in front of a store. When the new owner came out, I asked him about it. He was cussing about it saying that all he had were problems with the transmission and the drive train – had to have everything replaced. I sympathized and left. Again luckily, I didn't mention to him that I was the previous owner.
Your obviously inhaled too much exhaust fumes, a 1970 Dodge Challenger or similar would be superior, mopar rocked.
Loved it enough that were I in the market for a car, I'd buy an Audi.
If I ever see the Green Police making a sweep of my neighborhood trash cans, I'll be dropping them in the street.
The insane left is pushing so hard these days, oblivious to the people's rising anger.
They are going to get what they want, which will get them what they deserve.
If I could afford an Audi TDI I'd buy one, I love diesel cars, they get phenomenal MPGs but at this moment the Audi is priced out of my market. Oh, look at that, I'm a conservative who doesn't want a government hand out and I still can't afford an Audi.
Some creative conservative needs to make a counterpoint to this ad, splicing the "Green Police" footage with the sight of many, many citizens racking the slides on their shotguns.
Actually I thought it was just some camera crew filming the antics of Boulder CO.
OH YEAH LOL great idea!! I wish I knew more about video editing, I have plenty of 'racking' footage
it means "I can sell anything I want to eco-nitwits at a higher price just by using the words "Clean" and "Green"
The message is……..you can play the green game, and still have the freedom to do whatever you want. The problem for the greenies is that if they really believe the green message, they're really not solving the problem with their green cars. Too many cars on the road and the production of too many cars to feed the "do what I want whenever I want" attitude would really be the problem………if in fact there was a problem.
I was not offended by this commercial, I kind of thought it was a satire, until I realized it was just really a serious an completely out of touch ad created by people who fail to realize how silly they are.
It was a great laugh, I am not offended, I am thrilled that liberals express themselves, it makes it so much easier to be a conservative when the alternative runs their own negative advertising.
A well-known writer on issues of culture stated that "Satire is no longer possible in America because it's been superseded by reality." Says it all.
Maybe England is standing up for themselves; this could be the reason why the British media is so out in front on the hoax that is global warming.
Notice the white, German car was able to pass the facist checkpoint while the colored cars were still in line being sniffed over by leashed animals. Didn't someone say something about inside every leftist is a totalitarian screaming to get out?
Shouldn't it be the grocery store that is carted off to jail and fined for offering the plastic bags in the first place? Also the hardware store that sold the incandescent light bulb for a tenth of the cost of the "eco friendly" bulb?
I am an engineer who has done development work on automobiles. I love the TDI concept. It is an efficient and clean (non CO2 pollutants that are actually poison to plants and animals) power plant. My next purchase will likely be a TDI powered car (although not an AUDI). Just sell the car on its efficiency and its capabilities. That makes sense to me, but then again not everyone is an engineer that appreciates innovations that increase efficiency like I do.
