Mr. President You Are Blocking the Sun
by Joseph C. PhillipsIt is said that when Alexander the Great visited the philosopher Diogenes he asked the wise man if there was anything he could do for him. Diogenes is said to have replied, “Yes. Stand a little less between me and the sun.”
I thought of Diogenes as I read portions of the president’s speech from Cleveland, Ohio. The New York Times reports that the president used the word fight or some version of it more than 20 times.
Mr. Obama vowed to fight for jobs; he promised to fight for quality education; he promised to fight for health care; fight for transparency in government. He promised to fight! Fight! Fight! And never stop fighting. “So long as I have some breath in me,” he said, “so long as I have the privilege of serving as your President, I will not stop fighting for you.”
Such pronouncements of chivalry no doubt came as a surprise to the parents and children of the opportunity scholarship program.
Also known as the D.C. voucher program the OSP was started in 2003 as a program to provide children from low income families scholarships of up to $7500 to attend non-public K-12 schools within the district.
During the 2008-2009 school year, there were over 1,715 D.C. OSP students attending 49 non-public schools of their choice. The average annual income for these families is around $23,000.
The program was a bargain. The D.C. public schools spend $14,400 per pupil on average, among the most in the country. More importantly the program was successful. According to an evaluation conducted by the department of education, “After 3 years, there was a statistically significant positive impact on reading test scores.” as well as a “positive impact overall on parents’ reports of school satisfaction and safety.”
And yet when this program came under attack from the teachers union Obama – the people’s champion – was, along with his white horse, missing in action.
Which begs a few questions: Exactly who is the dragon preventing quality education? Job creation? Transparency in government? This just in: Dragon last seen on Pennsylvania Ave. The dragon is big government!
Is Obama preparing to battle the ever encroaching and expensive hand of paternalistic government? Hardly. Since taking office last year he has expanded government spending, tripled the deficit and added substantially to the national debt. He is ideologically predisposed to believe the solutions to all our social and economic problems lie in an expansion of the administrative state. He continues to believe that money taken from one part of the economy and injected into another part will somehow create jobs. Even after the drubbing Democrats took in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts he is determined to pass a health care reform bill that most Americans do not want.
If we penny stinkers must take what we do not want it is unclear for whom he is doing all this fighting.
It is unlikely that Obama will pass Cap and Trade so instead he will direct the EPA to enact regulations restricting the production of carbon dioxide and other green house gases by private industry. The additional costs to businesses will hinder their ability to create jobs. Don’t take my word for it.
In 2006 California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB-32 “a comprehensive program of regulatory and market mechanisms to achieve real, quantifiable, cost-effective reductions of greenhouse gases.” The bill has mostly succeeded in reducing the population of California as people and jobs have left the State in droves. Unemployment in California is far above the national average and the highest in the states history in more than 40 years.
Who is he fighting for when he brings terrorists to New York to be tried in civilian courts? Undeterred by America’s outcry, the Christmas day bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutalleb, was interviewed by the FBI for less than an hour before he was given his Miranda rights and an attorney, whereupon he promptly stopped talking. I feel safer already.
With such a champion it is difficult to comprehend America’s apprehension or why some might smile pleasantly and ask, “Please Mr. President, can you move a bit to the side; you are blocking the sun.”

Although more Woodrow Wilson cum Jimmy Carter than Roosevelt, he does channel all three of the worst Presidents of not only recent time- but history. Ignore the liberal historian takes. These Progressives push policies that are antithetical to a Constitutional Republic such as ours.
So, while perhaps not traitorous, they were- and are- un American in their philosophies. The Ameican people are getting wise, though. And Obama is a particularly thin gruel that at it's best was pablum anyway, which is why he is so damn ineffective. We are a meat and potatoes country.
That's why the Paul Ryans and Scott Browns all of a sudden seem much more than ordinairy…

Each time I see a photo of O with that look-down-on-you pose it triggered a memory of another leader who had that same posture. I am not saying they are one in the same only they both have the look.

Blame that on the legions of Obama-smitten MSM photographers and editors who compete with each other to feature the most "regal" images possible of our Prez. For them Obama is always on the cover of Vanity Fair. Give your average newspaper editor a choice of presidential pics and he will unerringly choose the one that most makes Obama look like a courtier's portrait of Louis XiV.
If you think trying to have total control over education, health care and pay (re: unemployment) are unexpected consequences of the Presidents policies and legislation, think again.
What happens when the entire population is dependent upon government for their very survival? You have a very docile population, waiting patiently for their next ration.
We're chattel to these people, nothing more.
The fact is that Obama's allegiance is to his tribe: the international intelligentsia. And what does that tribe worship? The State. Of which they are the priest class. So more and more big state "solutions" to everything under the sun is all that comes out of him or will come out of him.

The only explanation for letting the voucher program die is ideology. It´s certainly not the cost. It got results and the people want it. It´s big government ideology and cronyism. If there is a good reason, they haven´t explained it. But remember, meanwhile you´re supposed to hate a couple of bankers and radio hosts or whoever is Obama´s "enemy of the day".

I wish the Rasmussen presidential tracking poll used this question: "Do you think Obama is a good president?", instead of "Do you think Obama is doing a satisfactory job as president?" (or whatever version they use that produced almost a 50% job approval rating). I can't believe almost half of America thinks he is really doing a satisfactory job; I think the available choices to the question don't reflect how they feel. I think if my question were asked, he would get less than 25% saying "yes". (especially if the choices were, "yes", "no", "can't tell".
Since Obama seems to have little to no knowledge of America or its history, someone should tell him about Aaron Burr who was Jefferson's vice-president. Burr was charged with and tried for treason after leaving office. If it can happen to a vice-president then it can happen to a president. By neglecting the security of this country and willfully trying to bankrupt the country as well as numerous other activities that show disdain for the Constitution, Obama is putting himself in a position to either be impeached while in office or charged with treason once out of office.

Do you have any links to places where this connection had been made in more detail? I live in California and had not seen this connection being made before.
If your other posts weren't that inane, I'd assume that was sarcasm. In any case, the people that truly believe this are a case for requiring people to pass some kind of mental competence test in order to vote. If you have to be mentally competent to stand trial, it ought to be required for voting.

This issue irks me more than most. Schools are for the children. This above almost anything else this should be treated as sacred.
And here we are to day with the schools being about teachers unions. Tenure is hogwash. Protect the teachers. Protect the school districts and the boards of education. Protect the standards. Protect the mission – the ideology.
Schools are for the children. Period. Debate over. And since what is needed to revamp the existing education system is a national Hurricane Katrina then the only solution is to TAKE your children AWAY from these people and put them into new schools with teachers who work for you. Not for the teachers union.

Liberals I know want to tax and regulate corporations out of existence, because in their minds corporations = bad, but they get indignant with companies for moving out of the state, or the country, and taking jobs with them. Thank you Joseph for this good piece. No one is in a better position to critique our feckless president than you. It is disgraceful what happened with the D.C. voucher program as Obama threw it under the school bus. Sadly there are many more such examples past, present and to come.
If you are interested, I would love to hear your thoughts about Holders decisions regarding the Michigan voter obstruction "case" (or lack thereof) and how it relates to James O'Keefe's predicament.

Glenn Beck had a mother on his show whose daughter's education was going to be severely hampered by the extinguishing of the voucher program in DC. My first thought was,"Where can I send some money to help provide this girl and others like her with a quality education?" I think we should call this a "man caused disaster".
