The Wisdom of Massachusetts Voters
by Joseph C. PhillipsFollowing the death of Senator Edward Kennedy, Democrats in the Massachusetts state legislature rushed to change a procedural rule thus allowing Democratic Governor Deval Patrick to replace Kennedy with an interim and Democratic Senator. During the 2004 Presidential election this same august body had taken that power away from Republican Governor Mitt Romney fearing he would appoint a Republican should their junior senator, John Kerry, become President. The maneuver displays the arrogance of the left. So significant is their agenda that changing the rules in the middle of game is justified. Arrogance also leads them to dismiss disgruntled Americans as racists and dimwitted “tea baggers.” It is arrogance of the strongest sort that leads them to believe their policy solutions divinely inspired such that they say openly that Americans will take the medicine of the new left and learn to like it.

On Tuesday, Massachusetts voters humbled Democrats by reversing the decision of their state legislators and electing Republican Scott Brown to a U.S. Senate seat that has been held by democrats for all but 6 years since 1926. Tuesdays vote provided definitive proof that “God don’t like ugly. And he ain’t too fond of cute.”
As Republicans anticipate the mid-term elections and what appears like an opportunity to shift the balance of power in the Congress, it is wisdom the GOP would be wise to remember. The special election in Massachusetts was not solely a referendum on the healthcare boondoggle the new left is attempting to force down Americas [clearly unwilling] throat; it was also a clear refutation of the President’s economic policy as well as a refutation on the free spending ways of the previous administration. It would be arrogance of the Democratic sort for Republicans to imagine that Tuesday’s repudiation of democratic over-reaching was an endorsement of Republican congressional governance of the sort America witnessed during the first decade of the 21st century.
To say that voters were not enamored with Republican spending during the Bush administration is an understatement. In a relatively short time the Obama administration, along with a Democratic Congress, has made Bush look like a miser. They have expanded the federal budget by $1 trillion; tripled the deficit; is on track to add $1 trillion per year to the national debt for the foreseeable future; accelerated spending on social entitlement programs and proposed another trillion dollar takeover of the healthcare industry all the while holding a cap and trade tax in its hip pocket. “We are fed up!” is the message voters delivered last November and again in Massachusetts on Tuesday. To put it plainly, Americans are looking for responsible government.
The GOP must take care that they do not become the party of opposition. Rather, over these next months they must seek to define themselves as the party with an alternative plan for America’s future – a plan based on common economic sense.
To whit: money borrowed must be repaid with interest; dollars printed reduce the value of dollars saved and public works projects initiated with the goal of stimulating the economy only succeed in diverting capital from one sector of the economy to another. Further, they are paid for by tax dollars and ultimately become a drag on economic growth. The jobs government creates are government jobs, which are paid for through tax dollars. What government can do through prudent regulation and streamlining of bureaucratic processes is to create a hothouse environment friendly to entrepreneurs and small business owners, who are the true source of job creation and economic stimulus.
For instance, in this country there is an enormous amount of energy in a variety of forms: off our shores lays an estimated 19 billion barrels of oil and substantial natural gas reserves. The hinterlands of Alaska contain another 16 billion barrels of crude. There are another almost 2 trillion barrels available in oil shale. And we have not even mentioned our vast resources of coal, our capacity to produce nuclear energy and the ongoing development of solar and wind power.
An “all of the above” energy policy that would continue to encourage the development of alternative energy while at the same time reducing bureaucratic and activist roadblocks to our abundant natural resources would literally create millions of jobs, add trillions of dollars to our GDP, substantially lower consumer costs and aid in our national security with little or no cost to the American Taxpayer.
Or we could borrow another trillion dollars and pass another “stimulus bill.”
The voters of Massachusetts expressed their dissatisfaction with government over-reaching and fiscal irresponsibility with a loud and courageous voice. They showed great wisdom on Tuesday. With any luck some of that insight will find its way to Nevada and the streets of San Francisco in November.

Can't believe only three comments on this, an excellent piece summing up the MA election. What, not enough 'Hollywood' for y'all?
An excellent, well-written no-frills piece of truth.
It is arrogance of the strongest sort that leads them to believe their policy solutions divinely inspired such that they say openly that Americans will take the medicine of the new left and learn to like it. It would be arrogance of the Democratic sort for Republicans to imagine that Tuesday’s repudiation of democratic over-reaching was an endorsement of Republican congressional governance of the sort America witnessed during the first decade of the 21st century.
I've been saying the same thing for months now. Whichever party figures it out first will win. It doesn't matter which wing dips too far, right or left, the result is ALWAYS the same.
Excellent post, Mr. Phillips! Hearing the details from the CBO on the unfunded liabilities and the projected deficit, it becomes clear why the president has all of a sudden "found religion" and is trying to pose as fiscally responsible with his floating of a non-defense spending freeze.
Our fellow citizens need to be helped to understand that what this guy has done IN JUST ONE YEAR to explode the federal budget and deficit is unprecedented and will lead to the eventual demise of our nation.
Wake up!!!
Hope and change is now heading in a wise direction. China may stop lending money. I think he skimmed the Medicare fund.
just goes to show you that if you disrespect the process of the people…
It will bite you in the butt. And that's exactly what happened here. More than a few voters in Mas. were upset with the gamesmanship, and the cavalier attitude the local Dems had for their supposed 'captive' vote.
Guess it wasn't 'captive' at all, do you? And let this be a lesson for politicians of BOTH parties. Either run FOR the people, or prepare to lose…
Finally, some intelligent words about energy. Why do people think we would fight a war over oil, when we've got scads of it we could get much cheaper? And why do the green freaks completely ignore nuclear power? I read somewhere (disclaimer: not a nuclear physicist) that they're experimenting with recycling the nuclear waste as nuclear fuel again. This is very green, no?
2 points:
I would not put such shenanigans beyond republicans in a red state. They are after all, politicians as well.
Also, the Massachusetts voters voted the way they did as a wave of pissed off populism. That does not make them smart or conservative. They kept the progressive perpetrator of chappaquidick(no idea how to spell that) in for many decades. I would wager to say, that the Republicans are moderate, the Independents are left leaning, and the Democrats are as liberal as you can get in Massachusetts. Massachusetts voters deserve a little bit of thanks and a whole lot of scorn.
Good analysis, and the comments are good as well. Republicans also need to learn a lesson here. You must produce Ronald Reagan "80%" Republicans (Brown is not my kind of conservative, but in Massachusetts my kind of conservative would get murdered). And you must listen to the tea party movement without allowing it to push you into supporting candidates who can't win because they can't pass a "purity test." I believe the tea party movement is a fantastic groundswell of common sense, but it still requires strong candidates to win elections, and politicians who understand America's center-right instincts. Massachusetts and California are not Kansas or Louisiana, and that knowledge is critical to deciding just how conservative a winning candidate can actually be. I am supporting Tom Campbell for Senate in the California Republican primary, but I think that since he' is "my kind of fiscal and social conservative," I will not be with the majority. It's sad, but it's a political reality. I just hope the RINO Carly Fiona isn't the winner (if she does, and wins the general election, it's Barbara Boxer only with an R next to her name).
Great read again Joseph. You speak the truth, but the Democrats and their hard left wing will not listen.
As an aside, my grandmother used to say “God don’t like ugly,” just before the switch came out…yikes! LOL!
I'm still excited by this whole thing. Brown's victory feels almost historic in how it's save this country. Thanks God!
Spoken like a wise disciple of the great Reagan!
"Money borrowed must be repaid with interest; dollars printed reduce the value of dollars saved and public works projects initiated with the goal of stimulating the economy only succeed in diverting capital from one sector of the economy to another."
Boiling it down to bare basics like this makes the points very powerful somehow. Real world economics 101.
Joseph, please please PLEASE run for national office.
Excellent article. I want to see the Democrats on the defensive this election year. Which conservative candidates are going to step up? Oh, and by definition, RINOs can't step up.
"The special election in Massachusetts was not solely a referendum on the healthcare boondoggle the new left is attempting to force down Americas [clearly unwilling] throat; it was also a clear refutation of the President’s economic policy as well as a refutation on the free spending ways of the previous administration."
This campaign was also a clear refutation on something else – the power of party bosses. This win in Massachusetts has shattered that power. Three weeks before election, Brown was desperate for money. He was 30 points behind and could win only win if he got money. Because he wasn't wealthy himself, he went to the RNC for it. And they turned him down flat. Man, if this had been the old days, this would finished Brown for good. But not this time. Brown went to the Net and sent out pleas to all of the conservative blog sites and Tea Baggers all across the nation. Result? Within five days (count them), Brown had raised so much money he was literally drowning in it. Result? He won the election. This is groundbreaking. For the first time, a Senatorial campaign has been won without the party bosses controlling the funds. No longer can they threaten candidates – "do what we say or we won't give you money'. Worse, no longer can they dictate to voters – 'if you want to fund candidates, you have to go through us'. Brown's election didn't just shatter the hold of party bosses in Massachusetts, he kicked it in the teeth throughout America. Now THAT is a refutation!
JESSE JACKSON ANNOUCES HE IS SWITCHING PARTIES. THE FINAL STRAW BEING THE MASSACHUSETTS LOSS.
http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/2010/01/jesse...
"And why do the green freaks completely ignore nuclear power?" I agree and asked the same question–nuclear power is ignored because the left's afraid of it and won't let the truth be released about it, that's why–it's already out there being put to evil use–why not put it to good use??
Another stellar article. Please do not stop. and PLEASE start showing up on some conservative talk shows! I love your lectures/speeches!!!!!!
Now that's funny!

I'm in MA and voted for Brown. Hey! MA is hardly unique for voting into office the same old, same old so back-handed 'Compliments' for the Brown vote by some posters is uncalled for. The political process in DC AWARDS senior politicians with power so Kennedy's ability to get re-elected is no secret: His seniority allowed him to bring home the bacon and be useful for MA business interests. They knew his influence was good for business bottom line. Bible belt states that re-elect same old, same old lame politicians in DC do it for the same reason …. senior politicians are good for their state. This is the way The Game is played…………don't hate the player, hate the game.
Anyway, I am happy to have played a small role in elected Mr. Brown and hopefully he'll bring balance and a shift back to at least the center, which is what most people are, not wingnut bible belt Republicans or moonbat leftie commies.
They don't need to experiment with recycling nuclear waste. They are already doing it… just not in this country. France is efficient at recycling their nuclear waste and they have been doing it for 30 years.
The reason why the U.S. doesn't implement a recycling system is because it produces weapons-grade plutonium that politicians fear may get into the hands of terrorists, etc.
However, France has been recycling for 30 years without any incident, so those fears seem blown out of proportion.
Another reason is that the majority of people are quite uninformed when it comes to nuclear power and have irrational fears concerning it.
Just for fun…

People yell about Three Mile Island because it was a big deal, what no one talks about is that Three Mile Island hurt all of no one. There was a problem – a problem we would not have now – and it did do any damage to anyone. Nothing. Chernobyl was different, it was a big problem, but the problem was not a big as people think it was. Yes it did hurt people, and was bad but nothing close to what they said it was. Plus it was Chernobyl1 It was in the Soviet Union, a place not known for doing a good job at anything other than mass murder. It was shoddy Soviet work and was caused by the fact the people running it didn't care and were not paying attention and playing around. They caused it, even with the shoddy Soviet work it would not have happened if the people at the place were not screwing around.
Good post! My husband was on a business trip to CT and Mass last week during the election. He said the radio ads were brutal. We were non-believers (didn't think Brown would pull it out). But I am happy that I was wrong.
America has collectively awaken to the mis-direction of the country. At first we were dismissed as a bunch of rabble upset that there was a Black man in the Whitehouse.(so lame as to be insulting) The playing of the race card at every turn has become the sheperd boy crying wolf. We were then dismissed as mean spirited bigots who didn't want to share. When we attended town hall meeting we were protrayed as a bunch of old geezers who didn't understand what is good for us. With the enableing MSM we have been cast as a bunch of nut jobs who are all white(Chris Matthews). Well, in the words of Toby Keiths country song of a guy turned down…HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW! We are speaking up, and this time we will be heard at ballot boxes across this great nation. The progressive leftist in the Democrat party have distroyed that once great instituion, we will not allow them to distroy America.
Great article, you've nailed the essence, and yes Carolyn, that is exactly how it happened and as a mass voter I'd like to add that we are greatfull for the financial support from citizens around the country to make it happen.
And to those states and counties around the country that have the opportunity to get a Brown like candidate elected and lack the means to do so, to sound the alarm in blogs all over as was done with Scott, we mass voters will be willing to return the favor,
Thanks for a great article, Joseph! Scott Brown was elected because of the grass roots efforts to insure the truth was told about Obama and his cronies by the members of the Tea Party Movement. 1,000's of members of the movement from every State both contributed to Scott Brown's campaign directly and answered the call to come to MA to help him campaign. Tea Parties will rule the election in 2010 for one simple fact: It is a movement made up of a diverse group of concerned voters and is not beholden to any political party. The Tea Party movement has captured the vote and is growing like wildfire. Tea Partiers are everywhere and in both Red and Blue States. The Tea Party Movement is a political militia that contains patriots that have answered the call to arms. Reagan's great silent majority is now the heart of the movement. It also scares the Crap out of the DC establishment and I rather like that. Please use the term 'Tea Partiers" instead of the liberal slander of "Tea Baggers" as a sign of respect for these honorable people.
bahiabob: For Campbell, I refer you to my background article I did on him back in September: Mr. Bland Builds His Dream House. He was just entering the gubernatorial race then, but the basics haven't changed. As for Carly, she just doesn't have the political paper-trail that Campbell has, so I suggest that you might want to Google her, read the most recent articles and check her bio in order to help make up your mind. I'll add that I would vote for her in the general election if for no other reason than that it's one more seat in the R column to strengthen the Republican Congressional caucus numbers. Whether it strengthens the Republican-moderate-conservative wing is still an issue. Sorry I'm not more help on Carly, but she's new to me too.
Michelle Malkin had a piece on her just the other day – sounds like she is a RINO – she was talking about gender politics and an affection for Rev. Jesse Jackson.
I've been looking to get behind someone this time around, to walk the walk and support someone that could rid us of Boxer. I'll check out Campbell. Is there anyone else?
Sounds like CA needs a "Scott Brown" kind of person in order to win.
You left out that we Massachusetts voters are also horrified to find out that the Obama administration has no interest in keeping us safe from foreign or domestic terrorists. Brown stood tall against such idiocy as the idea that there aren't any terrorists in Afghanistan and terror suspects should be arrested and tried in criminal courts. Though the economy was foremost on our minds, and health care at the top of that, none of it will matter if we;re all dead or witnessing one of our major cities aflame.
lady: The Malkin article was one of those that sent me to the internet to check Fiona out. I was particularly concerned with the gender and Jesse Jackson issues. Chuck DeVore is also a serious, conservative candidate, and you can learn plenty about him right here on Big Hollywood and Big Government. They have covered him much more extensively than I have and he is a regular contributor. All the current announced well-known Republicans are within the margin of error of legitimate public polling sites (though they are still behind, and candidate Al Ramirez is trailing badly. I have no real useful information on him). . I could swallow Fiorina in the general election, but there really isn't a Brown-type moderate-conservative in the race that I know of, so my heart's still with Campbell.
Oh wise one. Tell me more about Fiona and contrast with Campbell. I need talking points to sell to my friends who are more gullible than I and may opt to vote for Carly.
Obama's SOTU speech tonight should begin with the following announcement: "Would the owner of the pickup with Massachusetts license plates please move it? It's blocking my health care reform bill!"
