Harry Reid and Slavery
by Joseph C. PhillipsThe classical poet A.E. Housman wrote, “For nature, heartless, witless nature.” He might have said the same thing about history, which like nature is neither cruel nor kind; right, nor wrong; it is simply indifferent. It has, as they say, no dog in the fight.

If, however, one is looking back and telling history, it might then be said that one is right or wrong about history. One might say as much about Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who was wrong about history in his remarks accusing Republicans opposed to Democratic healthcare reform of using the same stalling tactics as the defenders of slavery and Jim Crow.
In remarks intended to further paint the political right as immoral, racist and evil, Reid offered that, “Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, ’slow down, stop everything, let’s start over.’ If you think you’ve heard these same excuses before, you’re right. When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said ’slow down, it’s too early, things aren’t bad enough.’”
Reid is obviously confused. Republicans have no power to block passage of the senate healthcare reform bill. Nor are Republicans delaying passage of Obamacare. If Healthcare reform is being delayed and/or eventually dies it will be because one or more of Reid’s fellow Democrats decided to do the right thing and kill this Frankenbill where it lays.
Ironically, had Reid been speaking to Democrats he would not only have been currently correct, but historically accurate as well.
It was of course the Democrat Party that was late recognizing the wrongs of slavery; it was Democrats that wrote the Jim Crow laws and enforced them with fire hoses and attack dogs; it was the progressive hero Woodrow Wilson who segregated the federal government and locked Blacks out of jobs; it was the Democrat party that filibustered passage of the civil rights acts of 1964 and ‘65 and in fact has opposed every piece of civil rights legislation written since the end of the civil war.
Reid’s remarks might also be more properly directed at Democrats given that the reasoning used by new liberals of the 21st century and Democrats of the 19th century bear a striking similarity.
What is slavery except the usurping of one mans liberty and private property in service of another man? The defenders of slavery argued that the founding was a lie, that all men were in fact not created equal, that, in fact – to borrow from Thomas Jefferson – some were “born with saddles and others with boots and spurs to ride them.” They pointed to advances in science and philosophy that proved Black people were sub-species of human and thus justified their defense of slavery as a moral good. They further argued that the right to self-determination meant slave owners could transport their chattel into non-slave states thus making slavery the law of the land through the back door. The defenders of slavery declared that it was they who were on the “right side” of history and the fact of slavery was proof.
The argument is almost indistinguishable from the case the left makes in defense of abortion, which they demand be a part of what they call healthcare reform. The right to self-determination is sacred yet does not apply to children in utero as they are not human; the Rights articulated in the Declaration do not apply to them. We are an advanced society and history demands that we recognize that abortion is a moral good.
Similar arguments run through most of the new lefts social agenda.
They will argue that the founders of this great nation never intended that the rights they spoke of applied to all people in all times. For Reid and the rest of his Democratic cohorts some men were in fact born with saddles and others meant to ride them. To the new left a just government – a moral and compassionate government – is one that secures the newly discovered right to healthcare (or housing; or a job; or food) by confiscating the property of some in service to others. The fact that socialist Europe has already moved in that direction is proof enough that they are on the “right side” of history.
Reid invokes the image of America’s original sin in order to preserve the left’s inflated sense of its own virtue. In 2010 who but the most backward of all thinkers would side with the defenders of slavery? Who indeed?
Harry Reid is free to demonize Republicans and turn the past into fiction; it won’t make a bit of difference. It won’t make the healthcare reform bill any less terrible and it won’t make history anymore than an indifferent and no doubt amused observer.

What a pantload….Time for a change Harry!

Marc Lamont Hill needs lecture from Joseph C. Phillips. Marc seems confused on history of racism in this country.
No surprise here that Reid doesn't know his history. It appears the libs have lost this issue anyway thanks to info being leaked (to the horror of the left) that has made the bill the most unpopular legislation of our lifetime.

The idiot savant from Nevada can make such historically ignorant remarks and get away with it because the braindead liberals that voted for him are also historically ignorant and the media propagandists will allow any slur towards Republicans to go without rebuke. You’d think democrats would never want to bring up slavery considering their sordid past with the issue, their strong ties with the KKK and the fact that they currently have a senator who was a former proud KKK member. I doubt his feelings have changed. Then there’s Al Gore’s father who was a staunch segregationist.
Republicans should get on the house floor and shame these leftwing degenerates and educate the ignorant masses about the democrats diabolical past.
“I’ll have them ni&&ers voting Democrat for the next two hundred years.”
- Lyndon Baines Johnson (D)
It should also be noted that a Republican president issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
With regard to some of Reid's previous proclamations:
In April, 2007, Harry Reid said: “The war is lost!” It makes one wonder if Harry ever gets tired of being stupid or wrong. Ever since his stroke, Harry has been an embarrassment.
In June, 2008 Harry said: "Coal makes us sick." If that’s true, then let's shut down all the coal-fired power plants in the US and see what happens. A few days with 50% less electrical power in the US might let people see what an ignorant git Harry is.
This clown needs to be voted out.
To paraphrase one of the cops from Ruthless People: "Reid may very well be the dumbest person on the face of the Earth. Perhaps we should shot him."
Educating Harry, …tear into his hide, Joseph! Wouldn’t it be great when a Harry Reid type goes into a spew on the floor of the Senate, for a Republican to stop him, saying “You sure you want to talk about slavery Harry, “ and go through the Democrat litany of racial injustice over the centuries, that’s of coarse assuming the Republicans know their history. But, no we must observe decorum, Senatorial comity. Comity is right, and proper in civilized society, when both side participate. Sometimes you gotta call dumb $hit, dumb $hit, and tear into the matter. Great read Joseph.
MLH is too busy studying hip-hop, for which he received a PhD.
Didn't you read Zinn, History is irrelevant, nothing can be learned from History but just in case, let's rewrite it so we look good now, maybe nobody will notice.
The Democratic Party, as late as November 1864, was running a candidate for president, George McClellan, who vowed to negotiate a peace treaty with the Confederacy that would end the War Between the States and preserve slavery. Add that to your list of slavery/segregation history of the Democratic Party.

Harry Reid is just a mystery to me. He actually said he found Clarence Thomas to be unintelligent. Whaaaa?! I'm still speechless and it's been ages since he made that completely unfounded remark.
I look at Harry Reid's picture and my face goes like this —-> O_o
If they ever put WTF in the dictionary, his image will illustrate it. A complete freak of nature that one.
The stain of slavery is hard on the Dems, and they'll never remove it, and The Dem. party/media is trying to or has tried to adopt Abraham Lincoln into their party. 0beyme references Lincoln, by trying to compare himself to honest Abe. I wonder when or if Dingey Harry will try to invoke the same thing.
It's so convenient, the way the lefties are able to view history through selective perspective goggles. They'll say the same about anyone who disagrees with them, but I know the difference between revisionism and putting a good light on things.
Harry must really be senile if he can't remember that in 1964, when the Senate debated the Civil Rights Act, Southern Democrats voted no. While Northern Democrats voted yes, their votes were not enough. The deciding votes to pass this landmark bill were provided by Sen. Everett Dirksen, R-Ill., and the Republicans.
no shame. and what may be worse, only muted outrage at such bombastic remarks. we've become desensitized – perhaps by design?
There’s that fact thingy Ann, you can’t have that, it messes up a good story.
What's this? A left-wing politician making a false accusation of racism? Who is still surprised by this?
This is almost a non-story. This is the liberal M.O.
Senator Lincoln (D) Arkansas has an important vote on PelosiCare.
Keep the pressure on….we are winning. No surrender….No retreat.
A while ago I came across an excellent article on a blog called Black Republican which I tried to find but couldn't. Instead I found his commentary on the topic of Harry Reid’s stupidity…….
“Confident that liberal historians have successfully re-written civil rights history, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid brazenly compared Republican health care reform opponents to supporters of slavery, ignoring the fact that the Democratic Party fought to expand slavery while the Republican Party fought to end it. Not satisfied with just playing the race card on the senate floor, the Nevada Democrat also accused Republicans of opposing women's suffrage, never mind that the Republican Party also championed women's rights.
Democrats sang a different tune when inner-city minister Rev. Wayne Perryman sued the Democratic Party for that party's 150-year history of racism, a case that went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. Democrats came into court and, under oath, admitted their racist past that Sen. Reid is now trying to foist on the shoulders of Republicans. In court, Democrats refused to apologize for their racism and, using an army of lawyers, relied on the legal technicality of "standing" to avoid a court order against them, knowing they can take the black vote for granted.”

Great Article but do not confuse them with facts when they always speak about a greater truth, I.E. Liberal good Conservative bad. This is the mantra they operate under and to a certain extent we conservatives also adopt the very same mantra only in reverse. Right now we see how unchecked power really works. It works badly and always has. For years we had divided government with the executive of one party and the legislative of another and yet the country survived and actually improved. By design or accident the American people understood that a concentration of power was not good. The Republicans lost thier way and spent and spent so they lost the Congress. Now we have a Democrat Congress and a Democrat President and they have wasted no time proving this axiom of concentrated power is no good.

Buy up all the Old History books you can find, the ones before the revisionists got to them. We may one day need them to teach our children truth.
I'm trying to make a Harry Reid joke but I'm drawing a blank.
It is just torture thinking about Harry Reid.
But hey, imagine the torture it is to BE Harry Reid.
Hey, that's a joke. I DID IT!
…some were “born with saddles and others with boots and spurs to ride them.”
Today, I feel the more apt analogy would be "some were born with pockets and others with hands to pick them."
my outrage is not muted. Some of us are keeping score of all the slights against Conservatism and the honor of decent and patriotic Americans.
Frankly, I think the Republicans we have in congress right now have been convinced that the GOP side of the aisle owns slavery. The vast majority of them are without any focus but compromise for the purposes of re-election. They're as much to blame for Harry Reid's comfort in saying such things as anyone else is.
I have been lucky, my father was a History teacher, there are a couple of genealogists in the family & my family are nitrous, let's say, pack rats with records dating back to the late 1500's in North America. One of the family homes in Lancaster Co., PA still stands & is a museum, Hans Herr House, Purdue University's football stadium (Ross-Ade Stadium) is named after a family member, I live in an area named after my my great-great grandfather who came to Indiana in 1826. I have family listed on the Solders & Sailors Monument in the center of the city of Indianapolis so, for me, studying history is not is not a class, it's learning about my family & I have been trying to pass that on to my son & according to his teacher, from the complaints I have received about him correcting her, it seems to be getting through.
Thanks, Mr. Phillips. Well written. Keep it up. You might add Little Rock to your quivver. It was Democrat Gov. Orval Faubus who ordered the Arkansas National Guard to block the enrollment of nine black children at Little Rock Central High School, in defiance of a unanimous Supreme Court decision. And Republican president Dwight Eisenhower, who nationalized the Arkansas Guard, ordered them back to their armories and sent in the 101st Airborne Division to protect the black students.
Please write more, Joseph C. Phillips. Thanks for the article — great content, well executed, thoughtful. Who could ask for anything more.
And it looks like Lieberman, Nelson in Nebraska, and McCaskill in Missouri may be bucking Reid's regime too. This thing may fall apart after all.
Great article.
Over the yearsI have worked with a number of blacks and found them to be intellegent. I have found some of them to be uneducated, the same as some whites and others. What I have never understood was why so many blacks have chosen to vote for the democrat political party that has so often in the past voted to supress the rights of blacks and some others. It wasn't the democrats that freed the blacks. Lincoln was a Republican and the north freed the blacks, it was not the democrats that freed the blacks. The blacks will probably go ahead and do their best to convince everybody else that they indeed are uneducated and not worth the trouble for educated, intellegent whites to go to bat for them when times are tough, let alone during normal times. The democrats only retort is to call anyone who disagrees with them a raciest, a homophobe, or something more stupid. They do this all the time if you bother to read, or watch the TV news. Bah Humbug to those idiots.
Harry has always been a bit loose with the truth when it comes to history…
Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Harry Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.
On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.'
So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.
Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:
'Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.'
NOW THAT is how it's done folks! That's real SPIN.
"What is slavery except the usurping of one mans liberty and private property in service of another man? "
Amen bruddah! Mr. Phillips speaks truth to power. Word is getting out. You want to be associated with the truth. You want to be associated with what is real. What is honest. And Mr. Phillips nails this down.
Breitbart. Empire Of Truth. Shout out to Jarrett and Axelrod. It ain't COOL being tricked. And TRICKERY is the noose around the DNC neck.
Tricks tricks tricks. Shame shame shame.
I could be wrong here, but in my opinion, he wasn't blaming the republican party for slavery. Keeping an existing system, however broken, is human nature because change in any respect moves away from the known and the secure. Risk frightens people and always will. It's easy to turn a comment like Reid's that addresses slavery (which is very understandably a lightning rod on its own) into a blade it was never intended to be. If Reid had been politically unaffiliated, this comment might have raised eyebrows, but probably wouldn't have ignited the same firestorm that it has, and I think that exemplifies the biggest problem in politics right now. Immediately assuming he meant it as a scathing political attack without for a moment considering another point is an approach sure to kill any concept of compromise. Neither the right nor the left can independently run the country, because they're both halves of a whole. We've seen that time and again, and until both sides at least attempt to turn the other cheek from time to time, the United States will keep vacillating and never progress.
This Bum Reid must have studied history under Zinn… Way under.
Mr. Phillips would hand him his "hip hop" ass.
Agreed……with two halves their has to be compromise. That's the proplem, the dems will not compromise. They want it all. Total social and fisical control is their agenda. You need look no further than the current issues to see that. Unified progress is'nt in their vocabulary, total goverment dependency and control is the end to their means.
Or at least since Hillary's aborted attempt. (The only time I have used the A word favorably in years, Thank you Who's Who)
It was Lester Maddox, Democrat of Georgia that passed out pick handles to a mob going to 'handle the Blacks' in Atlanta.
What we REALLY need is reporters that will stand up on their hind legs and ask the tough questions. But, they don't know any.
The ignorance of the press is reflected in what they ask the public to believe.
That last remark from Lyndon Johnson NEEDS to be READ OUT LOUD by the Republicans!!!!
Where are the Republicans with the b@lls to stand up to this pack of lies coming from the democrats??? Has the criminal element in the democratic party been strong arming the Republicans with threats to their families…??? I can't think of ONE good reason why the democrats are being allowed to get away with this reversal of history!!!!
Bravo Mr. Phillips, bravo!
You're right, but I have an excuse. I'm a conservative and it's in my DNA.
That's one pre-existing condition that won't be covered under the new Healthcare Bill.
Reid was not directly saying the Republicans favored slavery…he was implying it for those who don't know their history (which is apparently anyone under the age of 40). He didn't say "Republicans are doing the same thing they did with slavery." His phrasing is a wily effort to get people to connect the dots out of ignorance. Don't kid yourself. He did this intentionally knowing that most people today, and certainly most blacks, don't know that the Republicans were their early allies in abolition and civil rights. This is what politicians do. It's what makes them good politicians–lousy human beings a lot of times, but good politicians. Here's an example: "I've heard that my opponent has an illegal alien working as a gardener. Now I won't believe it until it's proven, but that's what some people are saying…" "Some people" are his staff, speculating that the gardener might be illegal. See how it works? Harry Reid never says anything unintentionally. That's not to say he hasn't said stupid things (The war is lost!), but they are always said for a particular reason.
Don't hold your breath. The few Rebublicans with b@lls weren't born with any. Can you say . . .Sarah?
One of my greatest heroes, Frederick Douglass — and the greatest of all civil rights leaders, IMHO — became a life-long Republican after the Civil War. He never fathomed joining the Democrats, and based on his writings and speeches (check them out if you never have) he wouldn't join TODAY'S Democrats.
The Vegas mob used to call Harry "Mr. Clean". But they meant it in the same way they'd call a fat guy "Tiny".
Reid knows history. He also knows a good portion of the choir he's preaching to doesn't.
That's the point.
According to the recent polls, that looks like just what is going to happen.
Obama may have more in common with Honest Abe than he realizes. Lincoln's people did a good job of creating a legacy for him. But he was a lot more complicated than history remembers.
On the train to the republican national convention, Lincoln's people were passing out drinks to delegates, then finding out who they intended to vote for. Those against were escorted off the train. While it was moving.
I'm not attempting to diminish Lincoln. I'm a student of history, and the real history is always more interesting than the fables. Like other people, Lincoln was human, which means warts and all.
It's a great credit to his character that he entered the White House fully convinced African Americans were inferior to whites, yet over his time in office, by his experiences meeting people like Frederick Douglass, he changed his mind, and believed in freedom for all.
Now that is the sign of a great person. The ability to realize they were wrong, and change because of it.
Reid knows all that. He's preaching to his choir. He can't come out and complain about his democrats, he needs them too much. So he has to bash at some one else.
Enter the GOP.
I'm going to make it a point to come up with a Harry Reid joke.
I know its not going to be easy. Like a horrible car crash, somethings just are not funny. But I'm trying.
Chalk it up to the democrats success in instituting the welfare state.
he wasn't blaming the republican party for slavery
I will grant you that point yes. But he was inferring the hell out of it.
Great comment Joseph! Most of the great tenants of the conservative base are Biblical in nature. Do not lie, steal, commit adultery. Is it possible that liberals lie because they have no internal lie detector. They are morally bankrupt!
The Progressive view of rights is the same as that of Animal Farm: "All are equal; but some are more equal than others.
PLEASE run for national office, Joseph!!!

Sometimes being a 'pack rat' pays.
Congratulations on teaching your son!
Bet you are also better able to teach him in sex.ed, than the schools under Jennings.
Correct. Just associating the ideas "anti-health-care-bill" and "pro-slavery" in people's minds. Not much better than invoking the Holocaust.
And, as usual, the historical facts are more complicated than just "slavery was evil, America tolerated slavery, therefore America is evil." All the compromising, all the "evil" toleration of slavery, was an ongoing attempt by Congress to avoid tearing the country apart. I don't think glib commenters like Reid understand how incredibly hard his predecessors had to work just to keep the United States in existence. Of course, the legislative effort ultimately failed, thanks to extremists on both sides of the debate.
Fortunately for us, the stakes in the health care debate are nowhere near that high despite what the Democrats say. I don't see any Republicans invoking the gag rule, or threatening nullification or secession. Which just goes to show you – Reid's an idiot.
Lester used to hand out little "pickrick drumsticks" – miniature axe handles with his name on them – at his political rallies. My grandfather got hold of one and now it's somewhere in the collection of family junk. I wonder how much it would go for on eBay now?
He's 8 1/2 but he knows some of the basics because of training materials like the CPR dolls & birthing manikins I had from being an EMS instructor. It is simpler for me to explain the absolute basics to him, and along with the Bible let him understand the importance & moral responsibility of sex. Side note, he can trace blood through the circulatory system better than most of his teachers.
I just wonder how/why the tables turned.
Civil War: Republicans for strong central government, Democrats for limited government & states rights
Today: Republicans for limited government & states rights, Democrats for strong central government (to the point of socialism)
When/how did the Democrats embrace Big Government? Or how/when did "progressives" take over the party? Obviously they were there when FDR was president. Where were they before? It happens – party identities and platforms change over time. Sometimes entire parties that can't succeed on their own join a more mainstream one and alter its character.
I think a lot of liberals would tell you that their tenets are the same as those in the Bible. (They're always throwing them in our faces in debates, after all.) But I think the difference is, liberals don't understand that their ability to fulfill those tenets is limited. Conservatives know that people are flawed. Liberals – secular humanists especially – see no end to the human capacity for good. They believe that if we all just make up our minds once and for all, pull together, *believe*, that we can perfect ourselves and society.
This unlimited view of human capacities is what causes them to lie – or worse. They're doing it in the name of a higher cause.
Stergeye : That one's a good slogan, but it's too long for the typical mindless follower.
Keep 'em punchy.
"Four legs good, two legs bad!" : "Hope and Change!" : "Yes, we can!'
I'd never heard of the Lincoln supporters escorting anyone off a moving train before the Republican convention; learn something new every day.
Agree that the real stories are far more interesting than the myths surrounding him especially after the assassination, And that due to the upheavals of the Civil War Lincoln didn't let his ego get in the way of changing his perspectives. Jefferson Davis and many southerners, on the other hand, didn't have the same capacity that Lincoln had.
Time will tell with 0bama. Indications so far show me that his rather large ego, which is necessary to an extent in both running & serving as POTUS, would preclude him of changing his tactics, in the manner that Abraham Lincoln did, 0bama seems to me to be too self-absorbed, holds himself in too high regard, to admit error, of any kind. It's easier for him to blame either obliquely, or directly, his underlings, or his favorite whipping boy, his predecessor. I don't remember reading anything about Lincoln castigating his predecessors the the causes and effects of the Civil War. Again, time will tell.
Never forget it was this same line of "progressive" thinking that led to eguenics. For those who don't know, Eguenics was a belief in the early 1900's that there are desireable and undesireable types of people. For the betterment of society, it was held by its believers that we must do everything to promote the advancement and continuation of the desireable group and prevent/cutoff the repopulation of the undesireables. This undesireables were thus translated to handicapped (mental and physical) and certain races/classes. This was a leading belief among most of the progressive leaders during the 1900's including Pres. Wilson. It is from this philosophy that abortion and Planned Parenthood sprang from. While today's progressives had done a pretty good job of hiding their history, it is still out there for people to find and whenever I hear a progressive make a hideous statement like this I think back to their historical beliefs and laugh.
"To the new left a just government – a moral and compassionate government – is one that secures the newly discovered right to healthcare (or housing; or a job; or food) by confiscating the property of some in service to others."
Superb. I hope you visit my town someday, because I would like to treat you to the finest meal in the finest restaurant around just for that one sentence.
Teddy Roosevelt was the originator, the one who introduced Progressivism into the Executive, but he was a mixed case. Wilson was really the first to give it life. (See the work of Dr. Ronald Pestritto for details.) But that could never have happened – in politics, academia, and major media – without the work and influence of John Dewey, the major destroyer of American education and the American constitutional republic form of government. He, along with heavy doses of Rousseau and Hegel, imported by people like Wilson injected the virus that is now close to killing American culture.
During the Civil War..America needed a strong government to unite the republic, thus, Republicans saw the need for a strong central government to ward off any attacks on unity foreign or domestic.
Now, we don't that kind of power in government since the republic stands strongly on its own.
I'm sorry…are you saying Harry Reid had an Uncle Remus?
Harry needs to do a little more reading. I would recommend "A Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" by Doris Kearns Goodwin, a marvelous work.
Ms. Goodwin clearly documents the birth of the Republican Party as the party of human rights, the party of abolition while explaining that the Democrats sought to perpetuate slavery.
How that lesson was forgotten by so many in our population is a tribute to the power of political manipulators like LBJ and others to "fool some of the people all of the time."
