A New Morning of Race in America
by Joseph C. PhillipsOn the issue of race in America there is something in the air. Shakespeare’s melancholy Dane might say it is the “scent of morning;” our president would call it a “teaching moment.”
A lawsuit filed in the district court of East St. Louis alleges that Mayor Alvin Parks and City manager Robert Becks refused to hire Ronald Grimming, a former top commander of the Illinois State Police and former Director of the Florida Highway Patrol as the city’s police chief because he is white.
Plaintiffs Wyatt Frazer and Della Murphy, former members of the Police, Fire and Civil Service board, allege that shortly after Parks was elected he let his bias be known rejecting their recommendation of Grimming because in his words, “the city was not ready to hire a white police chief.” At Parks’ recommendation the city later hired Michael Braxton, a Black candidate with considerably less experience. Braxton resigned earlier this year following allegations that he has mishandled murder cases and engaged in race based hiring practices.
Frazer and Murphy further claim that for their advocacy of white candidates for other jobs in the municipality they were forced off the board.
The two had better not hold their collective breaths waiting for an invite to the white house for a few brewskies with the President. The Obama administration is decidedly unsympathetic and in fact shares the opinion of the city of East St. Louis that Black interests are best served by Black (and undoubtedly democratic) representation.
Last year voters of Kinston, North Carolina – a city of 23 thousand residents — voted overwhelmingly to remove party affiliations from ballots in their local elections for offices of mayor and city council. In their continuing effort to demonstrate to we cowardly Americans what true racial courage looks like the Obama Justice Department stepped in and over-ruled the voters in mid October.
Registered Black voters in Kinston outnumber whites; however, whites tend to vote in larger numbers. (The Obama election was the exception bringing thousands of Black voters to the polls for the first time.) The justice department therefore argues that blacks must still be viewed as a minority for “analytical purposes.” They further argue that because whites will only vote for Black candidates if they are Democrats the net effect of removing party affiliations is to deny Black voters representation of their choice, which the DOJ believes are only Black and only Democrat.
Irony is apparently a strong suit of this Justice Department. Officials claim to be protecting the free choice of Black voters while tacitly ignoring the choice they made by a 2-1 margin to do away with party affiliations. The decision is more troubling, however, in that it seems to put the United States Government in the position of attempting to guarantee that the “choices” of Black voters win elections. As civil rights commissioner Abigail Thernstrom rightly points out the Civil Rights Act was never intended to be a guarantee that ones choice of candidate would be victorious.
The opinion that only Black Democrats can represent Black people is shared by the Maryland chapter of the NAACP, which has asked that the state legislature strip the Governor of the right to name a successor as Mayor of Baltimore should current Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon be found guilty of any of the nine charges of theft and perjury she faces.
Marvin Cheatham, President of the Baltimore Chapter expressed his concern: “Here you have a predominantly African-American city. What if the governor appointed somebody white? … Would he appoint someone Irish to be the mayor?” Would he indeed?! And will the Obama Justice Department act on behalf of the minority white citizens of Baltimore to ensure that they receive representation of their choice?
The specter of the nations oldest civil rights organization requesting that the state legislature run interference for them so that they might discriminate based on race should give all of us pause to consider if we have not entered into a Ray Bradbury novel.
We might also consider that if America is ever to move beyond race — which is to say if the dream of America is ever to become a reality — we must fully embrace the principle of racial non-discrimination. The way forward does not lie through proportional representation and/or the political use of government power to pick winners and losers.
Yes, there is indeed something in the air. What the new morning brings and whether or not we learn the appropriate lessons remains to be seen.

this phenomenon has been happening for some time…
If a person of color wins a seat in power it now becomes a 'black seat'. Check with the Congressional Black Caucus for details. Same in local races. It's a derivation on the old 'run an Irishman' sop. Inner city blacks took notice of the Irish cronyism and want their due.
It is that way in Chicago. As a matter of fact fathers now appoint their sons before leaving office. Nice, eh?
The problem with institutions like the NAACP is they've been around so long, they've become completely infected with modern liberalism. They are no longer interested in the advancement of African Americans, they only care about the advancement of liberal Americans.
What a shame for an institution with such an illustrious history, reduced to this.

Not that she didn't shoot herself in the foot with that campaign ad about not only not being a Republican, but not even liking Republicans. According to a certain pollster, she would have won the election outright prior to airing that ad. Now I wouldn't be surprised if the other guy wins.

They are statists, they are absolutely convinced they could organize the world and create a perfect Utopia, if only they had the power to force people to do what they say. That's the way the entire left works, and unfortunately, far too many on the right seem to agree, except they want to be the ones pulling the levers.
True peace comes not from forcing people live according to your dictates, it comes from peacefully convincing people that your ideas are better, and then letting them implement them as they see fit.
I can't think of one conflict in human history that was started because some one said "Hey, I'm not going to make you do it my way!"
I think it is so sad, we are moving backwards in race relations since we voted in a half-black president. Damn sad.
My mother in law required nursing care (she died in 1997). Her nurse said that prior to a minority supervisor taking over the nursing care, the private duty jobs were given in sequence; that the person getting off a case went to the bottom of the list. Once a minority supervisor was hired, everything changed. No white nurse got a job until all the minority nurses were hired. I don't know if this is true or not; no one does but the nurses involved; but this came to me straight out of a nurse's mouth. She was pretty p.o.'d about it, too. I have never repeated it until now, but in view of this article, it just might have been true.
Go check back and some blacks were saying on tv that that is a black persons job regardless of of who is better qualified.

Addendum to above. The trolls will ask then HOW my mother in law's nurse go tthe job. The answer is she got the job under the old supervisor and remained taking care of my mother in law until her death (about five years) ergo did not have to go back into the nursing pool during that time. What she told me was repeated from the white nurses who were still in the pool. Again, I wasn't there.

My sister who lives in California says that you cannot get a goverment Job unless your name has a special latino sound to it. And you have to be fluent in Spanish. Non spanish speaking whites need not apply.

It is like Miami…English speakers aren't welcome. Pretty much the only places where English is still the primary language is in strip clubs and colleges that aren't Miami Dade. :p

I used to know someone who would do job interviews over the phone and if that person "sounded" black, they wouldn't hire them. The reason given was that "once you hire a black person, you can never fire them, no matter if you have a legal reason or not because they would turn around and sue you" and this person just didn't want to take that chance.
Remember also, J.C. Watts, former rep. from Oklahoma and a Republican, wanted to join the Congressional Black Caucus and they told him "NO"!

There are some who downplay or deny outright the existence of racism in America. I am here to tell you that Racism is alive and well in America…only it's much different than one might think. In fact, it's probably the opposite of what most people think.

Use affirmative action to guarantee jobs and then outsource the entire economy to third world countries with atrocious human rights records. Government enforced social engineering sucks.
My husband was in banking for many years. A black coworker wrecked a bank car while engaged in personal use. ( personal use was a violation of policy). He was fired, and promptly sued for wrongful termination. He admited to their manager it was on personal time and his fault. Fortunately the lawsuit was laughed out of court.
That being said, another black coworker choose to live in a predominantly black area so his children would "learn" about being black. A year later they moved to a lily white middle-class suburb.
The insanity continues. I loathe liberals; they're a cancer on society.
They're really only interested in perpetuating their organization. It gives them meaning in life, employment and social perks. And of course they have only one home, the big-government, liberal party. The same one that has held blacks down for 150 years, the same one that continues to throw accusations of racism at conservatives.
The left has been pushing us backward in race relations since MLK was murdered. Allowing Jesse Jackson to usurp his position was the start, and everything that has come from the left in the years since has been of the same character.
But after all the left is the Democrats, father of the CSA, father of the KKK, father of Jim Crow laws and enemy of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Obama's victory was a real threat to the "civil rights" industry, but he has managed to keep his peeps employed.

This has been going on for a long time.
Mindless, racist bloc voting by minorities for race hustlers, and reverse discrimination in almost every workplace are undermining the foundations of our Republic.
I'm not sure when it will happen, but at some point, fair-minded people are going to start pushing back, hard and effectively.
A trucking company I worked for had a new driver that did a great deal of damage through reckless driving. When they tried to fire him the NAACP came in and sued for him. This special entitlement trap seems to be widespread and it would discourage me from hiring black people even if they make an initial good impression. Of course I've seen the reverse, a good black driver who was racially harassed out of a small trucking company. He had a good case but too much pride to call the NAACP.
White, sure. Irish, are you kidding? Scots are where it's at.

AFAICR, there as another Congressman who was white but represented a majority-black district. The CBC also rejected him.
My brothers are both contractors. Back in the seventies, they hired anybody who was qualified and kept anybody who worked hard and showed up. When they fired two blacks and an Hispanic, they were sued. Furthermore, the Commonwealth Civil Rights Division fined them 50K. Since then, they have hired no blacks or Hispanics– Racism? Nope, our brother in law is black. We love the guy, even though he is a Democrat. They just can't afford the legal fees, court time, and judgments. They split each company so they weren't covered by the minority hiring. Way to go, libbies.

The Governor of Maryland, Mr. Martin Owe'Malley, is of Irish descent, which is where this phony "concern" comes from, I guess. In any event the statement Doc. Cheatham made is doubly curious because prior to becoming Governor, Marty was the mayor of that same Baltimore City, and he enjoyed wide support from the NAACP. Also, succession laws in the city are crystal clear. If Dixon is removed from office, her successor will be the current city council president, Ms. Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, a black woman like Ms. Dixon, jas as Doixon herself ascended from city council president to mayor upon Mr. Owe'Malley being elected to governor.
