Health Care Analogies
by Joseph C. PhillipsIt is good that the President has ceased attempting to sell his public option health care initiative on the strength of a comparison to the United States Postal Service. Americans will not soon be convinced of the economic viability of an expansion of public healthcare when it is compared to an entity on track to lose $7 billion this year. This past summer the Government accountability office put the postal service on its high risk list because of its “increasingly shaky financial footing,” and in the spring Post Master General John Potter asked Congress for permission to cut delivery service back to 5 days per week and close 700 offices nation wide. This is not the sort of talk that inspires confidence that a government takeover of the healthcare industry is the answer to our fiscal tribulations.

It is bad that the President, demonstrating what can only be described as intellectual density, has chosen instead to compare his public option to our system of state colleges and universities. This is particularly ironic given the fact that the cost of higher education has been skyrocketing for years and has in fact outpaced that of healthcare. Even more ironic is that according to the College Board’s annual tuition survey, the rate of growth of the price of public 4 year colleges has been faster than at private 4 year colleges; a trend that has persisted for 3 decades.
The Los Angeles Times recently reported that the California State Board of Regents has asked for an increase in fees for undergraduate residents that would be 44% higher than they were in 2008. In addition they are considering “ideas to reduce freshman enrollment by an additional 2,300 students.and to charge extra fees for some upper division undergraduate majors, such as business and engineering.”
A quick Google search reveals similar stories being reported across the country.
Our public institutions of higher learning struggle with rapidly rising costs and they do so for many of the same reasons as their private competitors, which as it happens are similar to those responsible for increases in the cost of healthcare: inflated demand and over reliance on third party payers and subsidies.
In fairness to the President, one of the points he is trying desperately if unsuccessfully to make is that public and private entities can co-exist. The point his detractors are making with increasing success is that if the problem we are attempting to address is the rising cost of healthcare, a “public option” is not a solution. The presence of a state run university system has not curtailed the rising cost of education in general nor has the “public option” slowed the rise in the cost of Public education specifically.
Of course Obama insists that taxpayers will not be subsidizing his public healthcare option; that it will be “self-sufficient” and “financed solely by the premiums it collects.” Revealing a disturbing lack of economic literacy he insists this can be accomplished because the public option will reduce waste and overhead and will not be burdened by the need to make a profit. (As if profit were some arbitrary and evil charge added onto a product or service. In fact it is the engine that drives the efficiency and cost cutting the president claims to be seeking. If it were not so we would have seen over the years non-profit organizations taking away the customers of profit seeking enterprises. Alas the opposite has been true. But I digress.)
Inquiring minds are dying to know A) why no one else has ever thought to reduce waste and inefficiency and B) what will account for the difference between the true cost of health care services and the price his public option will charge in order to make it “affordable.” Raise your hand if you hear Joe Wilsons voice echoing in the background. Rather like how public universities make higher education affordable to the masses the “public healthcare option” will be subsidized by taxpayers!
And like the public university system, when the government, which will be responsible for setting the price of care (as it sets the price of education at public schools), limits its financial commitment the institution must respond by raising its price and/or cutting and rationing its services. As the price is forced to better reflect the true cost of the service it will become less “affordable,” and like in higher education higher prices will increase the demand for financial aid, which according to both education and health care economists is a major driver of price inflation.
It is not fear of a Black Planet (as has been suggested by several new left apologists) that has sparked public opposition to the President’s ideas for health care reform. For an increasing number of Americans “Obamacare” is analogous with a slow-to-respond or unresponsive bureaucracy, suffering cost over-runs and seeking service reductions, and lay-offs in order to shore up its increasingly “shaky financial footing.”

So what you're saying is thatthe Health Care Indusrry as it's presently constituted is as good as the internet?
The fact that a president is still trying to make us think he can reduce costs through eliminating waste is actually laugh out loud funny. I am trying to find a good example of where that has happend with big government. No wonder support for this thing falls daily. He is either the stupidest man to have ever been elected president or the biggest liar.
The healthcare "industry" is one of the most regulated industries in the US. You only have to look at how both the states & the feds have attempted to "fix" it over the last 20 years to see why it's so screwed up. Government can't fix anything, at best they tend to make things more complicated & work for individual special interest groups that muck things up. As someone who's been in the "business" for over 20 years, I can site example after example of how a good product, yes I said product, like health insurance has been ruined by government.
Yes this is such a good plan that it now being proposed that if you don't sign up you get 1 year in jail and a $25,000 fine. I guess they throw in a free proctology exam upon entering the facility. Now this is the change we can believe in. Or we can hope this does not pass.
What Mr. Phillips is trying to point out to the logically impaired, is that historical experience proves that the government is incapable of running any large scale enterprise efficiently and without a tremendous amount of waste and fraud. That is why the Constitution tried to limit the things that the government had the authority to do. Free market capitalism is what made this country the wealthiest in the history of the world and it has been years of government intervention in the free market that has led to higher costs in industries such as health care. The government, in its misguided efforts to enforce "fair and just" outcomes has impeded competition and interfered with the natural regulatory aspects of prices. Essentially unregulated internet commerce is providing millions of people with goods and services at a fair price while government regulated insurance and health care is perpetually leading to higher costs for less.
everything you hear about the 'Health Care Debate' is either a lie, or disinformation…
No matter what. Fraud and waste? THAT's a larf. NOW you tell us. Public option? The whole damn thing is a public option. Do your homework, people. Why the bum's rush to have it THIS year? Could it be the WHO and
Codex Alimentarius? Or the UN and Agenda 21? All of your so-called health care will be administered and controlled by a centralized, world wide consortium. Check it out. Nutritional supplemente will be controlled as of Jan 1st by guess who? If you said Big Pharma you would be correct. And they want to 'police' the internet so you cannot receive what they consider 'bogus' info or 'rumours'…
Wake up America and take your country back. Let the so-called 'representatives of the people' (what a joke!)
know your concerns. Do it now…

Excellent reply. Hospitals and health care workers have to what government will or will not reimburse. They have to pass government approved licensing exams (not necessarily a bad thing on this one point), drug companies have to spend about $1 billion to bring a new drug to market. The local hospital wanted to open up a special cancer treatment center and they had to wait years for state and federal approval.
The feds already control about 75% of the health care industry. The only part they don't have total control over is the private health insurance industry, though they've got their blood sucking fangs sunk in pretty deep already.
And that's the reason they are currently in the modern liberal cross hairs. There is a small glimmer of individual freedom in the middle of this sea of government regulation, and they want it. And they want it real bad.
Health care issue is only a vehicle, the real push is complete control over every individual in the country. And once you have their health care, you have them by the short and curlys.
That's all this is about. Which is why common sense reform is off the table, deregulation is off the table, free markets are off the table. Not even an option with these people. This one gets them everything they really want. Because once "they're" "paying" the bills, then every thing we do becomes a health care issue.
Don't like fast food? Contributes to obesity, health care costs go up, good by Burger King. Don't like suburban sprawl? Leads to increased greenhouse gases, that will cause higher temperatures (sure it does), that will lead to an increase in diseases, health care costs go up, either move back to the inner cities or no health care.
There is nothing in our lives they won't use this as a reason to control. This is the issue.

It's not a race issue.
Rules for Intellectual Lightweights:
Rule #4: If you don't have enough facts to support your position, accuse the other party of having some unprovable character flaw. It deflects the attention away from your ignorance while at the same time giving the audience a reason to side with you. If your opponent is white, accusing him of racism is the best way to do this. Pedophilia, "Christianist", and Witch are also good bets, although the latter is falling out of use.

"The fact that a president is still trying to make us think he can reduce costs"
If that were only the truth, I'd be relieved. I don't think he cares in the least what We The People think. Liberals don't. Trust me on this one. The unwashed masses are idiots in their opinion. We need to be forced to do what's right, to live in approved places, and in approved ways. If we were smart, we'd already be modern liberals.
Liberals despise individuals. Nothing but utter contempt for those who don't agree with them. Don't get me wrong, not all liberals, but the hard core, the ones who are so smart, they know everything, there fore they don't have to listen to anyone, because they are already right.
There is nothing more scary than some one who is so smart they don't even realize how little they no. Put the President firmly in that column.
Oh lookie, a race baiter.
Played out…
Played out…
Do you have an actual point to make?
In my opinion, there is only one type of project government is reasonably competent at, extremely, narrowly defined issues. Force the Nazis to sign this one, single document, a surrender treaty. Place one pair of human boots on the moon, then bring them back safely.
It can't even come close to handling anything as vague as "health care." Look how it's doing with "green jobs."
"Yes, I am your nurse Bubba, please bend over and cough."
BF Huckabee called it. Your moves are played out. Go back to writing articles like "Barack the Magic Negro" and keep your intellectual impotence to yourself.
Your last paragraph opens up another issue. Will companies like Burger King begin to support political candidates with contributions as a way to influence them regarding their products? This healthcare reform is another way to force companies to "pay to play". This flat out angers me to no end.
If they do end up passing these "reforms", there is one thing you can do to protect yourself; become gay! I'm sure that's the one lifestyle that they will not interfere with even if the government is "paying" the bills!
The bottom line is that none of this has anything to do with Health Care at all. There are over two trillion dollars / year currenlty going to Health Insurance companies as premiums. And just like the 3.5 percent of your money (plus the employer match) that goes into your personal SS account(HA HA)…no scratch that …it goes into the general fund, where it is used to buy Treasury Bills, and the cash is then spent by the treausry…..that is what they have planned for all that money. Kiss it goodbye and then you die.
There is a very good reason why this administration labels those that oppose it as racist:
“The art of leadership… consists in consolidating the attention of the people against a single adversary and taking care that nothing will split up that attention”.
Adolf Hitler
Racists = single adversary
Yes. That's exactly what this is about, more power for the government, and money equals power.
The heath care industry in America is huge, it's like 1/6 of all money spent. If they assume the authority to completely regulate it, they get control over all that money.
In my opinion, politics is the extremely ugly art of compromising with people who don't want to compromise, and then forcing them to do it anyway. This is exactly what they are planning on forcing us to toe the line, on that very long list of demands from liberal victim classes they've been preaching to for decades. This is the pay off. This is it.
And they want to make all those decisions for us. That is not good.
all you have to do is know when they will be coming, and do a bank robbery the day before, that way you will dodge the fine, AND get free lodging, healthcare, and a job with ACORN when you get out!
ooooo, see if the troll floats!
Biggest Liar. I have transformed from Right Wing Terrorist to Racist with that statement.
ANSWER: A Constitutional Republic you witless, socialist moron. Apologies for the redundant description of ehrenstein
Just so. If Obama wanted to reduce the cost of medical care he'd work to INCREASE the SUPPLY, that is, lower barriers to entering the business, and stimulate more students opting for medical degrees/training.
But no: he's going to drive up demand by inviting millions more to come to YOUR doctor, then short him on reimbursement.
I'd like to see a 5-year beta test, say in Massachusetts. Let's see what a budget disaster beyond California proportions looks like before the national rollout.

Joseph,
This article was well written and well researched. Your points are as logical as they are "spot on".
Better watch out, they might start calling you a "racist".
To hit on the colleges and universities, it is high past time to strip out the meaningless "core requirements." If one really cares about "music appreciation," they can buy a book themselves and download some songs. Even "critical thinking" is suspect, as they teach how to be "open minded" about letting old people and fetuses die, and the benefits of "properly implemented" communism. Just the facts, please, when I am paying for it. Keep the courses focused on the career. "Art appreciation" sounds nice, but when going for a business degree golf lessons are more practical. That could be a phys ed credit too.
Plus they should be forced to disclose what your odds of actual employment are for the degree you are getting, with expected income. Art History majors can have wonderful profitable careers as bank tellers, provided they had good computer and math grades.
You've said it so clearly that liberals might even understand.
"Just so. If Obama wanted to reduce the cost of medical care he'd work to INCREASE the SUPPLY"
Exactly, which indicates this legislation has very little to do with medical costs, and a whole lot to do with who gets to give the orders.

Joe, you hit it referring to ObiWon's public university analogy, worse than his Post Office goof. The worst example one can find of rationing, tax-payer rip off, incompetent work by politically selected hacks. Clearly shows the leftee hypocracy of falsly touting "universal" care when the effect is not to cover any but their own eligibles. ObiWon's use of really bad analogies is, well, odd.
Troll using standard modern liberal talking points. If you don't agree you hate the poor. Nothing new there.
Refuse to accept the premise that if you do not agree with him, you must support slavery and segregation.
That premise is illogical according to Aristotle, and Aristotle actually thought slavery was logical.
Is the public option really out ? Will anyone see the bill before they vote on it ? I'm sorry – I don;t believe a word out of "ANYONE "'s mouth coming from that Big old stinking Dome in dc. I want to know how we can overthrow this bill that has absolutely nothing to do with anyone's health but has everything to do with keeping all the corrupt-o-crats in power and financially imploding this country financially ?
Very well said. The simple fact is there isn't any good argument for a government backed health care system. It will lead to mandatory cost increases of which we will no longer have an option of whether we want to pay or not and it will also lead to a reduction in the quality and quantity of health care. Anyone who wants this type of system is dillusional.
Bingo. And if the money goes into the general fund, and is not specifically set aside for "Health Care" it's just the Social Security scam redux.
Anyoner ever take a gander at the operational costs associated with any Federal agency doing some sort of job? Rock solid retirment plans, an ever growing pool of annual and sick leave for its civil service employees that they can carry over for decades as it accumulates and the inability to fire nonp[roducing civil servants makes the costs to the taxpayer ENORMOUS. Then it seems that most of the government agency work – the real stuff, not only the managment "oversight" – is actually done by armies of private contractors (I've been one for 41 years)…. So, tell me where these operational "efficiencies" will come from that Obama pontificates about?
Tell me, please…..
Well done Joseph, you’ve made far to much sense for our liberal friends. If you follow your logic, liberals may have to quit going to school and get a job.
