Racial Schizophrenia
by Joseph C. PhillipsSpeaking to NBC News Anchor Brian Williams, former president Jimmy Carter (who was taking a breather between having tea with dictators and lunatics) proffered that not only was South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson’s inappropriate outburst during President Obama’s speech before a joint session of congress fueled by racism, but the wider opposition to Obama is also based on the fact that Obama is black. Said Carter: “I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he’s African-American.”
During Obama’s 400th speech defending his plans to reform healthcare the president responded to charges that the proposals before congress would provide healthcare for illegal immigrants. The President called the charges false whereupon Wilson forgot his home training (or lost his mind) and called the President a liar.
As it happens, similar words were falling from my own lips at that very same moment. I think most people recognize that a private citizen calling the President a liar in the privacy of their living rooms is rather a different animal from elected officials doing so during a Presidential address. I would also like to believe that most thinking people recognize that boorish is not the same thing as racist.
Lest I get mail accusing me of believing that racism does not exist let me say in no uncertain terms that racism still exists in America. I have no doubt that there are people in this country that can little articulate their dislike for this president beyond the fact that he is black. Similarly, there are many that forgive his failings for the same reason. Yes, race in America is alive and well. (And based on the recent behavior of Kanye West and my sweet darling Serena Williams–so is boorishness. But I digress.)
To hold, as many on the new left do, that the “overwhelming portion of” opposition to this President is based on race is to engage in an egregious act of Venetian hearing; it is to turn ones back to the very legitimate concerns of voters and taxpayers. It is a contrivance that allows the current party in power to dismiss the honest and passionate voices of opposition.
Consider first that Wilson’s assertion was correct: the president was not being entirely truthful.
The administration points to section 246 of the current house bill, which excludes illegal immigrants from receiving “affordability credits” or vouchers with which to purchase health insurance. There is of course no enforcement mechanism in the bill to prevent those in this country illegally from receiving the credits. Democrats have voted down amendments adding such mechanisms.
There is also this quote from a recent report by the Associated Press on the current bill emerging from the Senate Finance committee: “The White House says that Obama does not want illegal immigrants to be able to buy insurance through the new purchasing exchange as they would be allowed to do under Democratic legislation in the House.” Word that illegal immigrants would not be covered under the House plan has apparently not trickled down to the senate finance committee, the Associated Press or Barack H. Obama.
Consider next that eight months into this administration President Obama has quadrupled the national debt, attempted to institute unprecedented control of banking institutions, taken over a major auto manufacturer and is now attempting to force on an unwilling populace a government run health care system. It is just possible that opposition to the President’s policies are based on principled political disagreements and not race.
I am only surprised that it took the left the better part of a year before they began to play the race game in earnest. The new left suffers from schizophrenia as it pertains to race. They claim to want to move past race in this country, but are reluctant to do so. Race provides them with a sense of security; they believe that through race they are able to keep their emotional and moral equilibrium. And because the left is emotionally tied to race it is a potent political weapon the use of which power seekers and power keepers will not soon relinquish.

Look at these 2 idiots… They luxuriate in the midst of our system, and make their living by tearing down that very same system, supported all along by their usefull idiots…

Mr. Phillips wrote a very thought provoking article. It is about race, and they started it. The idiot Jimmy Carter made one last gasp of all he knows; it was his death rattle and hopefully will be the death rattle of racism. With hope, this country can move past the Jimmy Carters, the Jessee Jacksons, the Al Sharptons and the rest of the race baiters. The last hold outs of the 1960's; it was all they know, and they played the game well.
We all nede to move past it, Strom Thurmond is dead, Trent Lott was drummed out of the Senate for racial reasons, Robert Byrd is senile and on his last legs, soon to be wrapped in his Klansman sheets to be buried next to Ted Kennedy in a watery grave. It is a new day and age. With that being duly noted, Joe Wilson was, and still is right. "YOU LIE!" Mr. President. That is not racist, that is truth………….
So anyone opposing Obama or Obamacare or Obama pals is a racist, huh?
*yawn*
The American Left has become a one trick pony.
This is way past ridiculous. It's been old for a while now, but I don't expect the left to give up their favorite gimmick any time soon. After all, “YOU’RE SURELY A RACIST, IF…” at http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...
Keep it up, liberals…keep it up. You're just lynching yourselves with this one.
One trick pony? That pony is foundered and lame. It is ready for the packing house………
And I say we help get it to that packing house.

These charges of racism ring hollow with the vast majority of Americans. Those who witnessed the sordid past have seen the great strides in race relations. Most of us that had black students in our classes, on our athletic teams, as friends and as adversaries couldn’t care less about race. To try and hang this albatross of “racist” around the necks of dissenters will only further decent Americans revulsion of these leftwing smear merchants and showcase these propagandists for the frauds that they are.
They claim to want to move past race in this country, but are reluctant to do so.
There is more to it than that. if Blacks are 13% of the US and pretty close to all democrats, and if the overall population is 40% democrat, than Black Americans are just about 33% of the Democratic party. This forces the Democratic party to be "racialist". There is a hardcore need to keep African-americans as a cohesive voting block. To constantly make race an issue, and to create an external enemy, "the racist", who threatens you, is straight out of Orwell. The Democratic party has not won the White Vote in a Presidential Election since 1968. If they lose their hold over the black voting block before they can legitimize third world peoples as a large enough percentage of the population, their aim of socaialist economic control may be thwarted.

How bizarre is it that it is liberals who can not consider Obama outside of the color of his skin.
They won't grant him the position of President of the United States, he is the black President of the United States.
Garofalo stating minorities who are Republicans have Stockholm Syndrome is OUTRAGEOUS an dehumanizing, yet she gets a pass (and a nod from liberal mouthpiece MSNBC).
Liberals are the most racist people on the planet and though I loathe them for many reasons, it is because of their racism that I loathe them the most.
I still fail to understand how anyone could equate opposition to President Obama's plans as racist. I see the problem as those who are charging racism NOT understanding that to many of us he is not a black man. Since he is half black (from Africa) and half white ( from America) we can choose how we view him racially. I do not have a "Black" President, I have a "White" President! And since I am a predominately "White" hispanic, born in Puerto Rico, my opposition to his socialistic agenda is based only on the merits of his agenda! Had he been a conservative republican I would have voted for him and would support most of his conservative agenda.
What's sad is the libs and dems cannot even look past this to see there will likely not be another multiracial (50white/50black) for quite awhile because of their race games now.The American people have been called every name in the book,by many well known people and hundreds others on nearly every single peep of obama agenda opposition in just 6months.So is there a day that goes by that we don't read some kind of race baiter crying wolf?We have 3 or more years of this folks.
It's healthy for us to question, debate, and interact with our gov and it's various tentacles, yet now anyone says anything about anything and it's racist.TBH I was desensitized before barrys inauguration. The term is so easily tossed around from the lefties and will likely not be forgotten for awhile, especially in the voting booth.
Barry and the dims claim to be uniters yet the base everything on emotion, race, class, etc and try to pit people against each other while they loot the nation.
Obama on Letterman Show: "I Was Black Before the Election" If Letterman was anything except a liberal stooge he would have asked, "But, were you red before the election?"
Joseph,
Excellent Post. Unfortunately it comes down to an old quote: “Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures”.
Its truly sad what they are doing to this country.
why the F do Black people demand the be called African American when 99.999999% never even flew over Africa? They keep beating white people over the head with it to try to say soemthing? Is it for brownie points? Shouldn't they be Americans like other Americans? or would they rather al be sent to Africa because America is so horrible? Tired of al this BS! It's time we say enough of this BS, either you are American or get the F out! no borwnie points for being hyphentated in name only. Get over it, your roots are in the USA, and your relatives moved here like most of us.
Their "relatives moved here like most of us"?
Are you out of your freaking mind?
That's really not helping.
Obama's response sounded good on the surface, but it really didn't address the question. 90%+ of the people who are protesting his policies didn't vote for him in the first place.
So, is their opposition based upon policy or prejudice?
I'm honest enough to recognize that there is some of each. Note "retiredat44's" post below.
What bothers me the most is how racist the Left really is. If you want to find examples, you don't have to go coming through a crowd for people who have signs, you just have to check Google for articles written about Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice or Michael Steele. Liberals believe they have every right to attack these people with racial epithets just because they disagree with them. It's the last refuge of a coward that they'll use racism when it benefits them, but credit themselves for their tolerance because they are supportive towards ethnic people who agree with them (no matter how despicable the individual's acts might be).
I've had conversations with white people who felt they understood what it was to be black far more than black people who didn't believe in the "correct" philosophy.
"and your relatives moved here like most of us"
Dude, did you go to Berkley?
Great piece Mr. Phillips. I've just decided that if disagreeing with this POTUS makes me a racist…okay. I've got too much to do and I don't have time to argue with idiots. They can call me a racist if that makes them feel better, I no longer care. The word doesn't have quite the sting that it used to. I think it's been used more times in the last 2 weeks than the last 2 decades and the left can stick it as far as I'm concerned.
The problem is that for nearly a century after the end of slavery, black people were told that they couldn't just be Americans like other Americans. If fact, it is my opinion that the discrimination of the Jim Crow era was culturally far more detrimental to black Americans than slavery.
When blacks were slaves, they could believe that their second class status was because they were slaves, which was something that could change in the future. But during the Jim Crow era, blacks were given second class status because they were black, even "one drop", which was something that they could never change. It's not surprising to me that many black Americans still do not feel simply American, even though I think it's too their detriment.

Racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism…The liberal playbook is label, divide and conquer, and oppress the groups they claim to be speaking for. I am actually encouraged to see people are finally catching on and losing their guilt. Enough apologies already! We're Americans! Let's lose the labels and hyphens!! We're Americans!
Nice try Jimmy Carter (sort of like your presidency), but Obama is not African-American, he's African and American. He's not a -, he's a &.
That little symbol makes a world of difference in his world view.
"Consider first that Wilson’s assertion was correct: the president was not being entirely truthful."
This statement will go down in history as the understatement of the century.
Good piece, keep them coming.

BTW-in percentage terms, how much of African genetic material does one have to have to be called "African-American?"
And, do I have the right to be called, "Europeon-American?" Does this get me some special status?
Racism
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
I haven't seen any talk about racism yet anywhere so let's talk about it. Above is the definition, but where exactly does racism come from in the first place? Were homosapiens racist against neanderthals and is that why they are extinct now? Are other species racist like one breed of dog vs, another? In psychology it is attributed to fear of the unknown and a fear specifically related to the unknown intentions of another ethnicity. Certainly as we have seen around the world these fears are fairly well founded (not by the way to excuse them, but simply to illustrate reality) in the ethnic cleansing(s) occuring throughout Africa and those that happened in Bosnia, Poland, Germany in WWII, Japan in its invasion of China, rape of Nanking and so forth.. Is it not perhaps the rest of the world that is racist and them wondering why there are no mass graves of blacks here on U.S. soil or of asians or hispanics or middle easterners or even whites for that matter? I think we as Americans should be proud how little real racism actually does exist here.
If Obama leaned heavier to his white rather his black ancestor side, there would still be the protests to try stop his socialism march. The issue is not white, not black but red.

Most Americans hoped that a Barack Obama presidency would change many problems in this nation. The simple fact that he was elected showed that racism was declining.
We wanted a strong economy and were willing to help those who needed health care among other concerns. Unfortunately, Obama saw this as an opportunity for him and a puppet Congress to increase taxes on us and gain government control over our financial institutions, our businesses, our health care and move America toward Socialism.
Then, his own racism showed when, without all the facts, he claimed the Cambridge Police Department had acted stupidly by arresting his pal, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. Now Jimmy Carter, Nancy Pelosi and the liberal media are pouring fuel on the racism fire.
Through all of this Barack Obama continues to mis-represent the facts. To publicly "wee-wee" on Americans and tell them it's raining is stupid. Sure, you can fool all of us some of the time and you can fool some of us all of the time but you will inevitably be exposed.
GOOD JOB OBAMA…

In order to understand the modern left, one needs to understand a crucial fact, the left routinely changes the definition of words, terms and phrases, as they please. This allows them to change the basic premise of debates, there by ensuring, at least in their eyes, they are right and correct.
Racism is no longer some one consumed primarily by the race of others. Racism has been changed to anyone who refuses to blindly accept the left's ideological premises.
By changing the definition, they no longer have debate an issue on it's merits. They simply charge an ideological opponent with racism, then conclude debating with a racist is useless and pointless, they win, and they start on their victory lap.
For example: "I believe federal control over the national health care industry would lead to disastrous rationing of services."
"You are a racist! I won't lower myself to your standards, you suck, I'm cool, all cool non-racists come on with me to Starbucks!"
LOL-Starbucks! classic!

I thought that that new language for checking status has been added to the newest bill?
I think it goes even deeper than that (though that is of course a large part of it). It seems to me that their attitude is a throwback to the Old Left/Marxists and their use of the term "false consciousness" whenever opposition to their ideas arose. Basically, their ideas are so self-evidently rational and superior that they cannot in good faith be opposed. All those who disagree with them are either dependent on or participants in the hopelessly flawed system of the present (i.e., members or tools of the bourgeoisie). This attitude has merely been updated since the civil rights movement to fit a racial, rather than class, paradigm, so that now opposition to the Left can only come from members of a white, racist, imperialist system (Glenn Beck) or its pawns (Clarence Thomas). In short, not only do Jimmy Carter and company say these outrageous things, even scarier, they might actually believe them.
A good start to ending racism would be to end affirmative action. Let each man and woman stand on their own merits and stop providing them with more excuses for failure.
I don't doubt that there are many true-believers. As you say, people so certain in their beliefs that they cannot accept any rational opposition to their viewpoint. But watching the Mainstream media, its easy to see that they do get talking points which they repeat, and by which they attempt to control the paradigms of the debate. I don't believe that most of these people are concerned about the truth or morality of the position, it is just simple method to shape the message to control the masses. And one of those groups that they are controlling is black america. The NEA scandal is a case in point…at the top might be idealogues, but the fucntionaries are also at work, doing their best to simply use propaganda as a means to control the masses.
Shame on me. There I was during 'O's address to the joint session, saying "Lies',, as I listened to what he said., agreeing with Rep.Wilson. There was no other way interpret 'O's remarks. With Obama, and his enablers, RACE and self-promotion will always trump reason, and the national interest.

I grew up in eastern Europe, ex Yugoslavia, Belgrade Serbia, former capitol…and there were 4 or 8 black students from Africa granted to attend schools in Communist country, because they are underprivileged…So I will never get racism and have no problem being white.
Black people in America are lucky, what if they were all those poor students we got to see from a mile away, black and few, living a better life in Communism then on the fields of their native land of exotic animals and tribal fashions….Black Americans are really the most successful of their race in the world, the rest of Africa wishes to be that way.
I do not like black racism and will not take it.
I am free.
