Read the Bill!
by Joseph C. PhillipsThe current philosophy of governance – and this includes governance of the democrat and republican variety-is that there is tremendous capacity in government to better the lives of average folks; it is the power of administrative policy that can end poverty, cure disease, and ultimately save the planet. It is, alas, also the promise of happiness written in capital letters that entices “we the people” to grant government ever greater powers with which to work their magic. Can’t find any authority in the constitution for the actions of our government? “Why man, they are engaged in the serious business of saving humanity!”
Woe to those that forget that the church is in the business of virtue; government is in the business of power. To mistake one for the other is to, in the one case risk the loss of your soul, in the other the loss of your liberty.
It all sounds a bit hysterical, I know, but I believe in math and two and two still makes four.
Consider the words of John Conyers (D-Mich). During a speech at a luncheon for the national press club Conyers questioned the point of lawmakers reading the Healthcare bill. There is no point in reading a bill that is 1000 pages long, said Conyers if you don’t “have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?”
Conyers is correct. And I am just cynical enough to believe that the length and legalese is purposeful. The door to interpretation and regulatory enforcement by bureaucrats must be left ajar. What we learn from Conyers is that the big picture is what is important.
And the big picture is always about control and power; it is also at the heart of the current discussion of Healthcare reform. Another example of the purposeful inexactness of language. Why do we not talk about reforming medical care?
Health is the relative condition of the human body and is determined by a variety of factors one of which is medical care. Other factors that influence our health are diet, amount of exercise, heredity; there is even a growing body of evidence demonstrating that prayer, meditation and regular attendance at worship services extends life expectancy, improves the immune system and adds to the overall health of the individual.
It is not hysterical to begin to wonder if the tentacles of a government run “healthcare” system will not find their way into the food services industry, leisure activities and even our spiritual endeavors.
Consider that just last week the Los Angeles Times reported on a new study by the Urban Institute entitled: “Reducing Obesity: Policy Strategies from the Tobacco Wars.” In order to fight the obesity “epidemic” in America the study recommends an excise tax on fattening foods. As sure as night follows day this is the first step down the road to “good food” and “bad food” as defined by bureaucrats in Washington D.C. It is a step the administrative state requires.
The allure of universal healthcare to most Americans is that it sounds an awful lot like “free” healthcare. Protest if you like, but that is really what most Americans want. We want to be able to go to any doctor we choose, for whatever ailment we have, receive the most current and cutting edge treatment available and not have to come out of pocket. Nice work if you can get it.
The crisis in American “healthcare” is and will continue to be who pays for medical services and how much they pay. Because it is at bottom a financial issue, the question of policy will be driven by similar concerns. In order to control costs those in charge will make financial decisions-not medical decisions-and policy makers will be encouraged to use their ever expanding power over our lives to address the crisis.
See if this sounds familiar: one way in which we can control the rising cost of healthcare is to try and make sure people are healthier and so need less medical care. Obese Americans account for more than $40 billion in annual “healthcare” spending. We need to prevent Americans from eating too much sugar, fat, red meat etc. etc. etc.
Have no fear, Government will ride to the rescue with a myriad of laws, taxes and expanded regulatory powers all designed to protect us; make us happier and healthier. The fine print will have been ignored because the details simply don’t matter — at least not when you are engaged in the noble work of saving humanity from itself.

Who needs facts?
Hell, who needs thought?
Thinkin' ain't American!
Your politicians know what is better for the greater good!
In fact, I'm gonna go turn myself in at whitehouse.gov for all the un-democratic things I do…Like breathing…bad for carbon emissions…
They can have my baby back ribs when they pry them from my cold, dead hands…
"Out of the mouths of babes" has a whole new meaning if you substitute "politicians" for "babes". And that includes the politicians on the Right as well because all politicians take the public to be "Aunt Ruby who just got off the bus to Atlanta with a chicken under her arm". The Left will never be satisfied until it achieves total control over our lives. Obamacare is a big step in that direction and for Mr. Conyers saying it makes no sense to read the bill, I would say I makes even less sense to vote for the damn thing.
Read The Bill . What a Invigorating, Innovative Concept. Most Refreshing.
The ruthless application of political will can never trump the laws of economics, but can surely visit misery on large populations for generations. Witness the Soviet Union, FDR subsidy programs that refuse to die, and European health systems that ration an ever-shrinking pie of Euros to an ever-aging population.
Joseph, please please PLEASE run for office. What you've got to offer is in short supply in both D.C. and Sacramento.
"I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them just to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess." This quote by 0bama our decepticon in chief, can fit so well in many different situations. I guess we conservatives don't have a say in our government any more. And our elected conservative representatives meekly shrug their shoulders and say that they can't do anything about it. 2010 and 2012 can't come soon enough.
Conyers statement about not reading the bill goes against every bit of advice I've ever heard from lawyers: "read the contract before you sign it." The Dems are claiming that this health care bill is sustainable–whatever that means–but in reality it isn't. At least not when playing with real money. We're now playing with Monopoly money and they are the little man with the top hat and tuxedo. ____You mentioned the improvement in health in relation to church attendance: I'll go you one further. There are actually supernatural healings that can be gained from Bible reading and believing. This I know first hand. So everybody out there, get into the word and take it like medicine.
There is nothing hysterical in these comments. The bill calls for the creatation of a comparative care committee. They will be charged with reviewing and deciding on WHAT treatments will be approved, and WHO is to recieve them. What does this mean? This committee does not yet exist, but we can look at where they do exist-England's NICE committee:

Hand me the remote… Most can't even watch a 60 second tv commercial, nevermind read 1000 pages.. I'd like a link to it in pdf if it is available anywhere, although I already know what's in it.. Page two: more money for malpractice lawyers and mandatory health insurance on every individual whether they can afford it or not.

NICE is not so nice.
The most laughable part about Conyers comments about reading the bill and having two lawyers was that he's the Committee on the Judiciary Chairman.
Chairman Fail there.
Read a bill before you vote for it?? What kind of country to you think this is??? Do you really expect Comgresspeople to be competent??
Something I saw the other day:
TERM LIMITS FOR CONGRESS – one term in office! one term in jail!
The stuff that you can read in the bill—Access to your checking account, illegals being covered etc. are some of the obvious reasons why the libs don't want people to read it. But what's really scary is what's not in the bill, that can be added without accountability, such as rationing. Kinda gives the phrase "the devil's in the details "new meaning. Any left wing lawyer will tell you to read any contract before you sign. This bill is naked attempt to exploit the need for some reform by overreaching so they can have even more control over us and to get even more of our money. But they are finding out firsthand the meaning of "Dont tread on me"!

The distinction between health care and medical care is lost on the populace and the proponents of the latest push to 'socialize' the industry work to blur that distinction. By taking care of your own health you ensure your medical cost, if any, will be dramatically reduced and you won't be funding the medical and law industries. People who lobby for socialized health care are stealing from you.
KILL THE BILL!!!
Joseph C. Phillips in 2012…wait a minute. You're much too honorable, and you're strong believe in God would all but crush your chances. The main reason for our society becoming as dysfunctional as it has is the total disregard for any belief in God. Government and the world needs more people like you, Joseph. Thanks for taking the stand you do, especially in an industry that so despises your views, risking your ability to make a living at it. You are the epitome of a true patriot.

Its not that our insurance companies are anymore compassionate, but its typically an individual fight. Begging for care, begging your doctor, asking for arbitration, asking for donations
When NICE makes a decision, entire classes of people are given a death sentence in one fell swoop.-oh, they also BAN paying for supplimentary private care (co-pay) if you don't like what they're giving you, under threat of being ejected from the gov plan.!
Joseph – You hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of folks out there who want, even expect access to the very best health care. They just want somebody else to pay for it. DCase is also on point. They ask us to trust them, and give us zero reason to do so.

It's more than just the politicians not reading the damn bill, the democrats are trying to squash any dissent:

They don't expect our trust. THEY EXPECT OUR OBEDINCE!!!
As of Jan 20th, it's changed. They no longer serve us, we serve them. With the accension of THE ONE, and monitored by his minions at CNN and MSNBC, we must kneel for their glory.
Well, if that's what the expect, they are going to be disapointed.
Republican? Let them die. Democrat? Come on in and have a few valium!
My brain melted watching that video. Get off my Congress, Conyers.
Don't let YoMama's SEIU thugs find out where you live! They will come over and show you how to shut up like Obama has instructed them to by getting in your face!
As part of a new contract with America, the Republicans should guarantee passing a law which mandates all congressional bills of a length and complexity that they can be read and understood by your typical representitive with less than three to four full days of study. The "hide the earmarks/gotchas" game by making bills too long to check has gone on too long.
As a long time car salesman I can speak to the power of the words "trust me". I never, ever uttered those words to a customer because if you do it's OBVIOUSLY CAN'T be trusted….Congress is full of shady, lying would be car salespeople…look at the photo of Conyers…oh, his missus is in a bit of legal trouble__Conyers's Wife Admits to Bribery in Detroit Investigation__
you bet- but one suspects they will not take this rejection lightly, we are supposed to cooperate; that's not happening. So, watch for yet another 'crisis'. Just hope it doesn't contain casualties…
very true…upper level Congressional staffers are running our country…do you think an intellectually lazy pig like Conyers is doing any more than the minimum of daily work? I don't. He runs basically unopposed for office, and he's an institution like the "Grand Cyclops of the KKK" Bobby Byrd or Ted "Where's the Open Bar? What? No, I'll drive!" Kennedy…look at the problems Chris "mansion, what mansion,,,it's a cottage" Dodd is having in Conn….perhaps sanity is on the way…
Too many Americans believe that bureaucrats in Washington are "experts". These people are interchangeable from bureaucracy to bureaucracy; lose you position at the post office, go apply at HHS or DOT or any other federal office. Would you turn your health care decisions over to your neighbor down the street? Why not, he's probably just as competent as some desk jockey in Washington. Scary, isn't it?

Diving and snorkeling at Australia's Great Barrier Reef, watching New Year's fireworks in New Zealand, and sleeping in a luxury Hawaiian hotel is the vacation of a lifetime — unless you're a member of Congress. Then it's a fact-finding mission to study climate change.
Ten lawmakers — six Democrats and four Republicans — spent 11 days on an international junket in some of the most breathtaking spots on Earth. Then they stuck taxpayers with the $500,000-plus bill.

You are correct, once government starts picking up the tab, they fully intend to do what ever they can to lower it. Couple that with an insatiable appetite for controlling the lives of others and it's a disaster just waiting to happen.
There is only one direction this can head, rationing health care. When health care has been regulated to a line item in budget, and the budget needs to be cut, it gets cut. The only possible result is rationing.
If you ask me, that's exactly the reason for all of this. The government is going broke over medicare and medicaid. They are going to have to ration it sooner or later. And since they can't sell rationing it for only a segment of the population, they have to invoke this to ration it for every one.

Of course nobody wants to read these bills! If you don't read them, and the people of your state get pissed about you signing voting for it, you can just say that you didn't know about a particularly unpopular aspect of the legislation. Plausible deniability. "They tricked me!" "I swear I didn't know!" "Trust me!" "It was the other guys!" If our standard of living takes a dive, as a result of these crazy bills passing, the American people are going to want payback, these these rates are going to want cover.
*evil grins* I welcome them to try…
My father-in-law theorizes that in the hearts of many people, the Government takes the place of God. Therefore, they look to Government to right all of the wrongs and injustices in the world while providing for all of their needs.
I don't disagree with him on this. This also sounds to me a very different view of Government than that which the Founding Fathers held.
But all of those other countries weren't doing it right. Just give them a chance and they will.
I guess if you have based your entire political party on not reading the U.S. Constitution, then reading bills probably doesn't make much sense either.
This supposes that Conyer can read.
You get a +1 simply for properly using the word "melange" in a sentence.
If AIG is too big to fail, then all 1,000 word bills should be considered– TOO BIG TO PASS.
Question with boldness
Hold onto the truth
Speak without fear
Somebody should head over to one of their local offices some late night and get all thug-life on their signage. Someone really should…
Outstanding article. However, you wrote:
"Have no fear, Government will ride to the rescue with a myriad of laws, taxes and expanded regulatory powers all designed to protect us; make us happier and healthier."
Please look up the word "myriad" in your dictionary. Buy a Harbrace College Handbook. The words "a" and "of" do NOT belong before and after "myriad," respectively.
Those who would pontificate must make certain that their pieces are devoid of "typos" and poor usage. It deflates the whole idea and point.
they expect our trust…
and, for the love of us we cannot understand why. This is the largest leap of faith ever asked by a government-
and quite likely the least deserving.
They ask you to study the facts. What facts? There is a melange of info out there, much of it either contradictory or just confusing. They claim no rationing but that's the only way they could curtail costs under this approach.
The say they don't have to have 'public option' but the Left goes into apoplexy at hte thought of a clean bill.
Ultimately, they don't want us to 'sweat' the details, just give them the power and they'll do 'what's best' for us…
And, that is what's truly terrifying…

Good read Joseph, responsibility is someone else’s problem.
here are the details of that little deal…
DETROIT — A Detroit councilwoman married to Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr. pleaded guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to commit bribery, the latest batch of bad news for a city already shaken by scandals and financial peril.
In a plea deal, Monica Conyers admitted to a "pattern of conduct of accepting bribes" from a waste-management company that was seeking a $47 million sludge-disposal contract from the city." Wall Street Journal June 27,2009
When Conyers the Elder says "TRUST ME" we should examine his ties and motives even more closely…of course like Dodd and Conrad, their *friends* in Congress will *let him go*….the inmates have taken over the asylum, they redecorated the offices, bought a new limo and are buying $550 million worth of new luxury jets to tool around in…it's time to hold BOTH PARTIES accountable…
New AP puff piece: "Obama: Canadian health care system works for Canada, wouldn't work for US ."
Nope, what Canada has would not work here. Not at all. So stop using how bad Canada's system is to keep trashing ObamaCare.
And what is so bad about Canada?
Um, not saying.
And how would ObamaCare be different?
Um, not saying.
Well the Canadian system resembles a private/public partnership, with private providers paid by the government for set rates, like the US Medicare and Medicaid systems. However there are no insurance plans for primary care, but there are supplemental plans. Does this mean you want private insurance plans available for primary care? Or that you would not want private providers?
Um, not saying. But our system will be different, so stop comparing!
Yup, when in-depth AP investigative journalism meets the most transparent administration in history. Truly.
LOL! And my Coca-Cola and M&Ms.
Second the motion!
Nah. I'm not plowing through 1000 pages of legalese crap. I'll let Rush's interns do it, then he can tell me what it sez…
Conyers really has no need to read the bill. He's told how to vote and he goes out and does it.
That's also true for the majority of Congress.
Actually, I'd support a 1,000 word limit on bills. 1,000 page bills, on the other hand…
Bravo!
Oh, it is very easy to understand.
Before accessing the health care system, a simple test of basic physical fitness will be done. Try to bend over and grab your ankles. If successful you will get serviced. If you fail you will get shafted.
See, simple.
If the people in congress don't want to read the bills, yet continue to vote on them. Then the people of congress are not doing their jobs. It's time to FIRE THEM!
So, if Obama doesn't want the "folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking," they why does he still listen to Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Maxine Waters? These are the people who were in charge of Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac in 2006 when President Bush and John McCain wanted to put more restrictions on their lending practices.
It is silly to try to distinguish good food from bad food and tax that which the government defines as bad. For one thing, not all bad food is bad for all people. One of my teenaged daughters can eat and eat and eat and never gain a pound. The other one watches what she eats but struggles to keep her weight down. Therefore, it is unfair to tax people who ingest bad food which is not necessarily bad for THEM. So, the only thing to do is tax obesity. Then the people who are actually doing the bad deed are bearing the burden of the results of that bad deed. And what better incentive for people to lose weight than the threat of being taxed? It would definitely work for me! If someone were to say to me, "Coca-Cola is bad for you. It can make you fat. We are going to add a 10% tax onto it," would I listen? Probably not. 10% tax on one soda doesn't seem like a lot at the time of purchase, and who cares? It's bad for me. But if someone were to say to me, "You are fat. We are going to tax you an extra 5% income tax," I would never take a sip of that Coca-Cola again. Of course, I don't think the government has any business knowing what I eat, drink, my height, my weight, or anything about my medical status anyway. It is a stupid argument to make one way or another.
The single worst thing about this bill is that the actual details are left to future political appointees to "work out". So things like rationing don't have to be spelled out in the bill. They'll just happen as a very pragmatic means to an end. "Trust us" my hind foot…
If you live long enough and have a decent memory, you understand the nature of govt and politics. The fact is, this govt is in the manana business. Tomorrow, things will be better, we will fix it.
Yet, 20 yrs later, the problem is now larger and needs another govt fix. Name it: public schools, roads, medical care, war, etc etc.
Why do these birds have ANY credibility left? I guess we all like to believe in Santa Claus and that is OK, if you are 5 yrs old.
As my grandfather used to tell me, "Every so often, you need a good hanging or two (polticians that is). Keeps them in their place!"
